Upgrading the Firmware for the COOLWALKER MSV-01 Photo Storage Viewer

Thank you for choosing a Nikon product. This guide describes how to upgrade the firmware for the COOLWALKER MSV-01. Before performing the upgrade, read this manual thoroughly to be sure that you understand all the instructions. If you are not confident that you can perform the update successfully, the update can be performed by a Nikon service representative. Important Do not turn the COOLWALKER off, operate the controls, or insert or remove memory cards while the update is in progress. Failure to observe this precaution could result in product malfunction. To ensure that the battery does not fail while the update is in progress, use the supplied DSA-0151F-05 AC adapter. If the COOLWALKER stops functioning normally as the result of an unsuccessful update, take the device to a Nikon-authorized service representative for inspection.

Get ready

To upgrade the COOLWALKER firmware, you will need: A COOLWALKER MSV-01 photo storage viewer A UC-E9 USB cable A DSA-0151F-05 AC adapter A CompactFlash memory card that has been formatted using a Nikon digital camera or Windows computer A COOLWALKER MSV-01 instruction manual
Check the current firmware version for the COOLWALKER

Connect the DSA-0151F-05 AC adapter and turn the COOLWALKER on. A menu will be displayed in the monitor.
Press INFO (the right function button) to display product information in the monitor.
Check the current firmware version. No update is required if the current firmware is version 1.30

Turn the COOLWALKER off.

Download and extract the new firmware
Create a new folder on the hard disk and name it as desired.
Position the mouse cursor over an empty space on the desktop and click the right mouse button. Select New > Folder to create a new folder on the desktop. Name the folder as desired.
Download the file "CWfw130.zip" to the new folder. Click the "Click Here to Download" link above and save the file to the new folder. Extract the firmware update. In Windows XP, right click on the "CWfw130.zip" folder and choose "Extract All." Other versions of Windows - for general instructions on downloading and installing. If extraction is completed successfully, the folder "firmware" will be created in the new folder. The folder "firmware" will contain the following files and folders: firmware: Folder containing firmware ncwfl: The new firmware release.Details the changes made with the release of firmware version 1.30 txt:

Copy the firmware to the memory card
To copy the firmware to a memory card:
Turn the COOLWALKER off and insert a formatted memory card. Be sure the memory card is inserted before turning the COOLWALKER on. After confirming that the COOLWALKER is off and that the computer is on, connect the COOLWALKER to the computer using the UC-E9 USB cable.

Turn the COOLWALKER on.

If Nikon View is installed Nikon Transfer will start automatically and display the message, "Camera or card contains no images. Nikon View will now terminate." Click OK to exit Nikon Transfer. If PictureProject is installed PictureProject Transfer will start automatically. Click Cancel. * Under Windows XP, a Removable Disk dialog similar to that shown at right may be displayed. Select Take no action and click OK.
Copy the firmware to the memory card. Important Be sure to copy the entire "firmware" folder to the root directory of the memory card. The COOLWALKER will not recognize the new firmware if it is copied to an existing folder on the memory card; similarly, the update will not succeed if only the "ncwfl" file is copied. 4-1. When the COOLWALKER is connected and turned on, a new "Removable Disk" icon will be displayed in My Computer. Copy the entire "firmware" folder to the removable disk. Important Be sure to copy the entire "firmware" folder to the root directory of the memory card. The COOLWALKER will not recognize the new firmware if it is copied to an existing folder on the memory card; similarly, the update will not succeed if only the "ncwfl" file is copied. 4-2. When copying is complete, open the "firmware" folder on the removable disk and confirm that it contains the file "ncwfl."
Disconnect the COOLWALKER as described in the COOLWALKER instruction manual.

Update the firmware

During the update, do not: Remove the memory card Turn the COOLWALKER off Unplug or disconnect the AC adapter Operate any of the COOLWALKERs controls Subject the COOLWALKER to powerful electromagnetic noise Any of the above actions could cause the COOLWALKER to become inoperable.
Insert the memory card containing the firmware into the COOLWALKER. Turn the COOLWALKER on. A menu will be displayed in the monitor.
Press INFO. (the right function button) to display product information in the monitor.
Press UPDATE (the left function button). A confirmation dialog will be displayed.

Highlight Yes and press the

button.

The message shown right will be displayed while the update is in progress. The update takes about one minute to complete.
The following message will be displayed when the update is complete. Press any button to turn the COOLWALKER off.

Remove the memory card.

Check the firmware version as described in Step 2 , "Check the current firmware version." The update was successful if the current firmware is version 1.30.
This completes the firmware update.
