1-8 Safety Seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system
Head restraints should be adjusted properly as they may provide significant protection against injury in an accident. Check the adjustment after someone else uses the seat. Do not remove the head restraints except when folding down the rear seat or using certain child restraints. Always replace and adjust them properly if they have been removed for any reason. If the head restraints are removed for any reason, they should be securely stored to prevent them from causing injury to passengers or damage to the vehicle in case of sudden braking or an accident.

HEAD RESTRAINT ADJUSTMENT (for front seats)
To raise the head restraint, just pull it up. To 1 lower, push the lock knob k and push the head restraint down. When removing the rear head restraint for seat folding etc., push the lock knob and pull up the head restraint. The removed head restraint should be securely stored.
Adjust the head restraints so the center is level with the center of your ears.
Active head restraints are designed to supplement other safety systems. Always wear seat belts. No system can prevent all injuries in any accident. Do not attach anything to the head restraint stalks. Doing so could impair active head restraint function. The head restraint moves forward utilizing the force that the seatback receives from the occupant in a rear-end collision. The movement of the head restraint helps support the occupants head by reducing its backward movement and helping absorb some of the forces that may lead to whiplash type injuries. Active head restraints are effective for collisions at low to medium speeds in which it is said that whiplash injury occurs most. Active head restraints operate only in certain rear-end collisions. After the collision, the head restraints return to their original positions. Properly adjust the active head restraints as described in the previous section.

Vehicle security system activation
The security system will give the following alarm: The hazard indicators flash and the horn sounds intermittently. The alarm automatically turns off after approximately 25 seconds, and this will be repeated three times. However, the alarm reactivates if the vehicle is tampered with again. The alarm can be shut off by unlocking a door with the key, or by pushing the UNLOCK button on the keyfob. The alarm is activated by: Opening the door (including the back door) without using the key or keyfob.

DOOR LOCKS

Always have the doors locked while driving. Along with the use of seat belts, this provides greater safety in the event of an accident by helping to prevent persons from being thrown from the vehicle. This also helps keep children and others from unintentionally opening the doors, and will help keep out intruders. Before opening any door, always look for and avoid oncoming traffic. Do not leave children unattended inside the vehicle. They could unknowingly activate switches or controls. Unattended children could become involved in serious accidents.

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM
It is possible to lock/unlock all doors (including the back door) and activate the panic alarm by using the keyfob from outside the vehicle. Before locking the doors, make sure the key is not left in the vehicle. The keyfob can operate at a distance of approximately 10 m (33 ft) from the vehicle. (The effective distance depends upon the conditions around the vehicle.) As many as five keyfobs can be used with one vehicle. For information concerning the purchase and use of additional keyfobs, contact a NISSAN dealer. The keyfob will not function when: the battery is discharged, the distance between the vehicle and the keyfob is over 10 m (33 ft). The panic alarm will not activate when the key is in the ignition switch. Do not drop the keyfob. Do not strike the keyfob sharply against another object. Do not place the keyfob for an extended period in an area where temperatures exceed 60C (140F). If a keyfob is lost or stolen, NISSAN recommends erasing the ID code of that keyfob. This will prevent the keyfob from unauthorized use to unlock the vehicle. For information regarding the erasing procedure, please contact a NISSAN dealer.

decreases significantly or if windows fog up easily when operating the heater or air conditioning system. The air conditioning system in your NISSAN vehicle is charged with a refrigerant designed with the environment in mind. This refrigerant will not harm the earths ozone layer. However, special charging equipment and lubricants are required when servicing your NISSAN air conditioner. Using improper refrigerants or lubricants will cause severe damage to your air conditioning system. See Capacities and recommended fuel/lubricants in the 9. Technical and consumer information section for air conditioning system refrigerant and lubricant recommendations. A NISSAN dealer will be able to service your environmentally friendly air conditioning system.
AUDIO SYSTEM AUDIO OPERATION PRECAUTIONS Cassette player
To maintain good quality sound, NISSAN recommends using cassette tapes of 60 minutes or shorter in length. Cassette tapes should be removed from the player when not in use. Store cassettes in their protective cases and away from direct sunlight, heat, dust, moisture and magnetic sources. Direct sunlight can cause the cassette to become deformed. The use of deformed cassettes may cause the cassette to jam in the player. Do not use cassettes with labels which are peeling and loose. If used, the label could jam in the player. If a cassette has loose tape, insert a pencil through one of the cassette hubs and rewind the tape firmly around the hubs. Loose tape may cause tape jamming and wavering sound quality. Over a period of time, the playback head, capstan and pinch roller may collect a tape coating residue as the tape is played. This residue accumulation can cause weak or wavering sound, and

Do not operate the starter for more than 15 seconds at a time. If the engine does not start, turn the key off and wait 10 seconds before cranking again, otherwise the starter could be damaged. 4. Warm-up Allow the engine to idle for at least 30 seconds after starting. Do not race the engine while warming it up. Drive at moderate speed for a short distance first, especially in cold weather. In cold weather, keep the engine running for a minimum of 2 - 3 minutes before shutting it off. Starting and stopping the engine over a

DRIVING THE VEHICLE

short period of time may make the vehicle more difficult to start.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The automatic transmission in your vehicle is electronically controlled by a transmission control module to produce maximum efficiency and smooth operation. Shown on the following pages are the recommended operating procedures for this transmission. Follow these procedures for maximum vehicle performance and driving enjoyment.
1. Keep the foot brake pedal depressed and push the selector lever button to shift into a driving gear. 2. Release the parking brake and foot brake, then gradually start the vehicle in motion.
Do not depress the accelerator pedal while shifting from P (Park) or N (Neutral) to R (Reverse) or D (Drive). Always depress the brake pedal until shifting is complete. Failure to do so could cause you to lose control and have an accident. Cold engine idle speed is high, so use caution when shifting into a forward or reverse gear before the engine has warmed up. On slippery roads, do not downshift. This may cause a loss of control. Never shift to P (Park) or R (Reverse) while vehicle is moving forward. Never shift to P (Park) or D (Drive) while vehicle is moving rearward.

Starting the vehicle

After starting the engine, fully depress the foot brake pedal and push the selector lever button before shifting the selector lever to the R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive), 2 (Second) or 1 (Low) position. Be sure the vehicle is fully stopped before attempting to shift the selector lever. This automatic transmission model is designed so that the foot brake pedal must be depressed before shifting from P (Park) to any drive position while the ignition switch is ON. The selector lever cannot be moved out of the P (Park) position and into any of the other gear positions if the ignition key is turned to the LOCK, OFF or ACC position or if the key is removed from the switch.
5-10 Starting and driving
These could cause you to lose control and have an accident.
Apply the parking brake if the selector lever is in any position while the engine is not running. Failure to do so could cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly or roll away and result in serious personal injury and/or property damage. If the key is turned to OFF or ACC for any reason while the vehicle is in R (Reverse), N (Neutral), or any D (Drive) position, the key cannot be turned to LOCK and be removed from the ignition switch. Move the selector lever to P (Park) position, then the key can be turned to LOCK. P (Park): Use this selector position when the vehicle is parked or when starting the engine. Make sure the vehicle is completely stopped. The brake pedal must be depressed to move the selector lever from N (Neutral) or any drive position to P (Park). Apply the parking brake. When parking on a hill, apply the parking brake first, then move the lever to the P (Park) position.

DRAINING OF COOLANT WATER
If the vehicle is to be left outside without antifreeze, drain the cooling system by opening the drain plug located under the radiator. Refill before operating the vehicle. See Engine cooling system in the 8. Maintenance and do-ityourself section for changing engine coolant.
5-28 Starting and driving
to meet the SAE standard minimum clearances between the tire and the closest vehicle suspension or body component required to accommodate the use of a winter traction device (tire chains or cables). The minimum clearances are determined using the factory equipped tire size. Other types may damage your vehicle. Use chain tensioners when recommended by the tire chain manufacturer to ensure a tight fit. Loose end links of the tire chain must be secured or removed to prevent the possibility of whipping action damage to the fenders or underbody. If possible, avoid fully loading your vehicle when using tire chains. In addition, drive at a reduced speed. Otherwise, your vehicle may be damaged and/or vehicle handling and performance may be adversely affected. Do not use tire chains on dry roads. Tire chains must be installed only on the front wheels and not on the rear wheels. Do not drive with tire chains on paved roads which are clear of snow. Driving with chains in such conditions can cause damage to the various mechanisms of the vehicle due to some overstress. 4. For all wheel drive: If you install snow tires, they must also be the
same size, brand, construction and tread pattern on all four wheels.

SPECIAL WINTER EQUIPMENT

It is recommended that the following items be carried in the vehicle during winter: a scraper and stiff-bristled brush to remove ice and snow from the windows and wiper blades. a sturdy, flat board to be placed under the jack to give it firm support. a shovel to dig the vehicle out of snow-drifts. extra window washer fluid to refill the reservoir tank.
Whatever the condition, drive with caution. Accelerate and slow down with care. If accelerating or downshifting too fast, the drive wheels will lose even more traction. Allow more stopping distance under these conditions. Braking should be started sooner than on dry pavement. Allow greater following distances on slippery roads. Watch for slippery spots (glare ice). These may appear on an otherwise clear road in shaded areas. If a patch of ice is seen ahead, brake before reaching it. Try not to brake while actually on the ice, and avoid any sudden steering maneuvers. Do not use cruise control on slippery roads. Snow can trap dangerous exhaust gases under your vehicle. Keep snow clear of the exhaust pipe and from around your vehicle.

HEADLIGHT AIM

The aim of the headlights may require adjustment when replacing the headlight assembly or when the vehicles front body has been repaired. When the adjustment is required, follow these procedures, or have them adjusted by a NISSAN dealer. Before performing the headlight aim adjustment: Check the pressure of all tires for the correct inflation pressure. Check that the tools and spare tire are stowed securely.
Check that the fuel and lubricants levels are filled to correct capacities. Unload all luggage and other items, which may influence the vehicles height level. Load a weight on the drivers seat that is equivalent to the weight of a driver.
The point P must be: H is the distance between the headlight center point to the level surface. WL is the distance between the left and right headlight centers. 3. Mark point P on the wall or screen. 4. Back up the vehicle 5,000 mm (197.0 in, 16.4 ft) straight away from the wall or screen. L is the distance between the wall or screen to the vehicles front bumper. 5. Apply the parking brake.

Stopping the vehicle

adversely affect the safety and handling of your vehicle. Generally, snow tires will have lower speed ratings than factory equipped tires and may not match the potential maximum vehicle speed. Never exceed the maximum speed rating of the tire. If you operate your vehicle in snowy or icy conditions, NISSAN recommends the use of snow or all season tires on all four wheels. For additional traction on icy roads, studded tires may be used. However, some provinces and states prohibit their use. Check local, state and provincial laws before installing studded tires. Skid and traction capabilities of studded snow tires on wet or dry surfaces may be poorer than that of non-studded snow tires.

All season tires

NISSAN specifies All Season tires on some models to provide good performance for use all year, including snowy and icy road conditions. All Season tires are identified by ALL SEASON and/or M&S on the tire sidewall. Snow tires have better snow traction than All Season tires and may be more appropriate in some areas.

TYPES OF TIRES

When changing or replacing tires, be sure all four tires are of the same type (for example, Summer, All Season or Snow) and construction. A NISSAN dealer may be able to help you with information about tire type, size, speed rating and availability. Replacement tires may have a lower speed rating than the factory equipped tires, and may not match the potential maximum vehicle speed. Never exceed the maximum speed rating of the tire. For additional information regarding tires, refer to Tire Safety Information in the Warranty Information

Summer tires

NISSAN specifies summer tires on some models to provide superior performance on dry roads. Summer tire performance is substantially reduced in snow and ice. Summer tires do not have the tire traction rating M&S on the tire sidewall. If you plan to operate your vehicle in snowy or icy conditions, NISSAN recommends the use of SNOW tires or ALL SEASON tires on all four wheels.

Four-wheel drive models

Always drive the vehicle in a safe and prudent manner according to traffic conditions, and obey all traffic laws. 1. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle until the engine coolant temperature gauge needle points between the C and H (normal operating temperature). 2. Accelerate the vehicle to 88 km/h (55 MPH),
