2. Getting started
Installing the SIM card and the battery
Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small children.
The SIM card and its contacts can easily be damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting or removing the card. Before installing the SIM card, always make sure that the phone is switched off and disconnected from any enhancement and then remove the battery. 1. To remove the back cover from the phone: With the back of the phone facing you, push the back cover release button (1) and remove the cover from the phone (2).
Getting started
2. Remove the battery by lifting it from the end from the finger grip (3).
3. To release the SIM card holder, slide the card holder backwards (4) and open it by lifting (5).
4. Insert the SIM card into the SIM card holder (6). Make sure that the SIM card is properly inserted and that the golden contact area on the card is facing downwards.
5. Close the SIM card holder (7) and slide it forwards to lock it (8).
6. Replace the battery (9).
7. To replace the back cover: First place the top of the back cover over the locking catch on the top of the phone (10). Direct the back cover towards the locking catches on both sides of the phone and press to lock the cover into place (11).
Charging the battery
1. Connect the lead from the charger to the socket on the bottom of your phone. 2. Connect the charger to an AC wall socket. The text Charging is displayed briefly if the phone is switched on. If the battery is completely flat, it may take a few minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made. You can use the phone while the charger is connected. The charging time depends on the charger and the battery used. For example, charging a BLD-3 battery with the ACP-12 charger takes up to one hour and 30 minutes while the phone is in standby mode.
Switching the phone on and off
Warning: Do not switch the phone on when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger.
Press and hold the power key
Note that if the phone displays Insert SIM card even though the SIM card is properly inserted, or SIM card not supported, contact your network operator or service provider. Your phone does not support 5-Volt SIM cards and the card may need to be changed. If the phone asks for a PIN code, key in the PIN code (displayed as ****), and press OK. See also PIN code request in Security settings on page 93 and Access codes on page 16. If the phone asks for a security code, key in the security code (displayed as *****), and press OK. TIPS ON EFFICIENT OPERATION: Your phone has a built-in antenna. As with any other radio- transmitting device, do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the phone is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed. Not touching the antenna area during a phone call optimises the antenna performance and the talktime of your phone.

Note: When Keyguard is on, calls may be possible to the emergency number programmed into your phone (e.g. 112, 911 or other official emergency number). Key in the emergency number and press. The number is displayed only after you have keyed in its last digit.
Changing the covers
Before changing the cover, always switch off the power and disconnect the phone from the charger or any other device. Avoid touching electronic components while changing the covers. Always store and use the phone with the covers attached.
1. Remove the back cover from the phone. See step 1 in Installing the SIM card and the battery on page 29. 2. To remove the front cover, gently pull the locking catch on the top of the front cover from the locking hole in the phone (1) and remove the cover starting from the top.

GPRS, HSCSD and CSD
With your phone you can use GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) and CSD (Circuit Switched Data, GSM data) data services. For availability and subscription to data services, contact your network operator or service provider.
Note that the use of the HSCSD service consumes the phones battery faster than normal voice or data calls. You may need to connect the phone to a charger for the duration of data transfer. See GPRS modem settings on page 124.
Using data communication applications
For information on using a data communication application, refer to the documentation provided with it. Note that making or answering phone calls during a computer connection is not recommended as it might disrupt the operation. For better performance during data calls, place the phone on a stationary surface with the keypad facing downward. Do not move the phone or hold it in your hand during a data call.
8. Battery information
Charging and Discharging
Your phone is powered by a rechargeable battery. Note that a new battery's full performance is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles! The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out. When the operating time (talk-time and standby time) is noticeably shorter than normal, it is time to buy a new battery. Use only batteries approved by the phone manufacturer and recharge your battery only with the chargers approved by the manufacturer. Unplug the charger when not in use. Do not leave the battery connected to a charger for longer than a week, since overcharging may shorten its lifetime. If left unused a fully charged battery will discharge itself over time. Temperature extremes can affect the ability of your battery to charge. Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use any charger or battery which is damaged. Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short-circuiting can occur when a metallic object (coin, clip or pen) causes direct connection of the + and - terminals of the battery (metal strips on the battery) for example when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Short-circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the connecting object. Leaving the battery in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditions, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. Always try to keep the battery between 15C and 25C (59F and 77F). A phone with a hot or cold battery may
Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from radio frequency (RF) signals. However, certain electronic equipment may not be shielded against the RF signals from your wireless phone.
Pacemakers
Pacemaker manufacturers recommend that a minimum separation of 20 cm (6 inches) be maintained between a handheld wireless phone and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with the independent research by and recommendations of Wireless Technology Research. Persons with pacemakers: Should always keep the phone more than 20 cm (6 inches) from their pacemaker when the phone is switched on; Should not carry the phone in a breast pocket; Should use the ear opposite the pacemaker to minimise the potential for interference. If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, switch off your phone immediately.
Hearing aids
Some digital wireless phones may interfere with some hearing aids. In the event of such interference, you may want to consult your service provider.
Other medical devices
Operation of any radio transmitting equipment, including cellular phones, may interfere with the functionality of inadequately protected medical devices. Consult a physician or the manufacturer of the medical device to determine if they are adequately shielded from external RF energy or if you have any questions. Switch off your phone in health care facilities when any regulations posted in these areas instruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy.
Vehicles
RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles (e.g. electronic fuel injection systems, electronic anti-skid (anti-lock) braking systems, electronic speed control systems, air-bag systems). Check with the manufacturer or its representative regarding your vehicle. You should also consult the manufacturer of any equipment that has been added to your vehicle.
Posted facilities
Switch your phone off in any facility where posted notices so require.
Potentially explosive atmospheres
Switch off your phone when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere and obey all signs and instructions. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death. Users are advised to switch off the phone when at a refuelling point (service station). Users are reminded of the need to observe restrictions on the use of radio equipment in fuel depots (fuel storage and distribution areas), chemical plants or where blasting operations are in progress. Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often but not always clearly marked. They include below deck on boats; chemical transfer or storage facilities; vehicles using liquified petroleum gas (such as propane or butane); areas where the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust or metal powders; and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.

CONFIGURE PC SYNC
The first time you run Nokia PC Sync, you must configure PC Sync to work with your PIM application. Once you have customized PC Sync, you can proceed with synchronizing your PIM data with your phone. Establish a connection between your phone and PC using IR or cable. Launch Nokia PC Sync by clicking Start, point to Programs, point to Nokia PC Suite 5, then click Nokia PC Sync. Select your PIM application from the drop-down list, then click OK. Click the More button to view a summary of current or default settings.
Set General synchronization properties
3 Click the General tab, then select the information you want to synchronize. Click the desired Automatic Synchronization option (for example, Every connection). Click the Advanced button to specify additional options, including resolving synchronization conflicts.
Synchronization conflicts
A synchronization conflict occurs when you change or edit a contact, calendar, or to-do list note in both your phone and PIM between synchronization sessions. By default, PC Sync resolves the conflict by treating your phone as the correct information source. To change conflict resolution properties, click the option associated with your PIM application.
Set Calendar and Contacts properties
Your PIM application storage capabilities are much more extensive than those of your phone. Use the Calendar/To-do and Contacts tabs to define the kinds and amount of information synchronized.
