1.0 Fact or y Re se t
Method 1 (For MA1.2 and above)
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Pull the power plug out. Push and hold the Standby key on the front of the 9800 and plug the power plug back in. Don't release the Standby key and wait until four lines "----" appear in the 9800 display. Now additionally press the arrow-up key and keep it pressed. Release the Standby key now. Now at the same time as still pressing the arrow-up button, press the arrow-down button. After a few seconds you should see Cust appear in the 9800 display and then "Pull the Cord" will scroll across the display. Now pull the power plug out again, wait 5 seconds and plug it in.
Method 2 (For software before MA 1.2)
1. 2. Put the receiver info standby mode (Press the Standby key on the 9800). As soon as it is in Standby mode, press and hold the arrow down button on the front of the 9800. (Keep it held down) Then press the arrow up button. Release both buttons and pull the power plug out, wait 5 seconds and plug it back in again.
In each case this should do a factory reset on the machine and the device will start with the Welcome installation screen. All settings will be wiped as if you had just purchased the box. This will wipe all your channel settings but will not change the software version

Unfortunately only a reset helps in 99% of cases. You can however try adjusting the display duration for the volume bar in the User Settings menu from 3 to 2 seconds, but usually this does not help.
3.0 Hidden Ser vice menu
On the remote press the menu button. Select the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION menu option using the arrow button on the remote control but do not press ok to select the option. Instead, press the green (option) key on the remote control. Enter the PIN number (The factory setting is: 1234) You will now see the hidden Service menu.

4.0 Conditional Access Monitoring Menu
The pin for the Monitoring menu (under the Conditional Access menu) is: 6962.

5.0 Extended info in the Sy stem Infor mation Menu
Select the System Information option in the Main Menu. A window with information such as Hardware version, Software version and Boot Software version appears.
In this menu the following buttons produce other information: The green (option) button on the remote shows the exact version of the software. The red button shows the date that the software was compiled.
(Press the green button to get back to the normal information)
6.0 Open TV applications
The option to switch off the automatic loading of Open TV applications is unfortunately hidden in a menu where you would not expect it to be In the Parental Guidance menu under the User Settings menu.
7.0 C-band LNB Setup
Despite what it looks like, C-band LNB setup does work. Simply set the LNB type to C-band and enter the correct IF. Once this is done the 9800 will scan for C-band channels but the antenna signal strength does not indicate any signal.

8.0 Copying settings from one 9800 to another
1. 2. 3.
Unplug both 9800 units from the power. Connect a Null-Modem cable between both units serial ports. While holding the arrow-up button on the front of the 9800, plug in the power cord of the host (the 9800s whos settings are to be copied from). Once the word "host" appears in the display release the arrow-up button. The 9800 will then boot still saying "host" in the display. Then while holding the arrow-down button on the front of the second 9800, plug in the power cord of the slave (the 9800s who the settings are to be copied to). Once the word slave has appeared in the display release the arrow-down button. Now the data should be transmitted from the Host to the Slave. Once the copying has completed the host will show DONE in the display. The SLAVE will also show done in its display a little later. Then and only then unplug the power from both devices, wait 5 seconds and plug them in again. Do NOT turn the power off using the "Standby button or the settings will not be saved!

Upgrade your Nokia 9800s to Software version MA 1.2 via RS232 Cable
To do this you will need: 1) A serial (RS232) null-modem cable. 2) Nokia Serial Server program and MA 1.2 binary file (sysSW.dl) to upload to the receiver. You can get a null-modem cable (sometimes called a laplink cable) from most electronics stores. ie Tandy or Dick Smith Electronics. You will need one with a female DB9 connector on one end and either a female DB9 or DB25 on the other.
(The cable I use is catalogue number X-2662 from Dick Smith, which has both DB9 and DB25 connectors)
See http://www.cip.com.au/sat for instructions on how to obtain the MA 1.2 software.
OK once you have got these: 1) Unzip the SerialServer/MA 1.2 binary file into a folder on your PC. 2) Make sure that the 9800s is in standby mode and if you have a CAM installed that it and any smartcards are removed from the 9800s. 3) Plug the null-modem cable into your COM port on the PC and the other end into the port marked Serial on the back of the 9800s. 4) Make sure no other program on the PC uses the COM port you wish to use for the download. 5) Run SerialServer.exe on the PC 6) Decide if you have plugged the cable into port COM1 or COM2 on the PC and press Options to set the right port. Also make sure that the following communication parameters are set in the control panel port settings in Windows: bits/second: 19200 data bits: 8 stop bits: 1 parity: none flow control: hardware (or maybe none)
7) Press Open Image and select sysSW.dl to be downloaded to the box. 8) Press Start Download.
10) The PC may ask you to turn power off to the 9800s and then back on again to start the download. 9) Wait about 15 minutes until the download is complete. The front display of the 9800s will indicate what percentage of the download is still remaining. (ie 100 down to 0) 11) Turn the 9800s on and Check the software version. It should now report: Hardware Version: Software Version: Boot Software version: 1.2 MA1.2 104
12) If everything is ok you now have MA 1.2 installed. 13) Now that you have MA 1.2 installed you will need to add satellites in the Asia-Pacific area to the list. For instructions on how to do this see the sats.pdf file.
PLEASE NOTE: By following these instructions you agree that you do so of your own free will and understand that I take no responsibility if it does not work or your box will not work afterwards. You agree that I shall not be held liable for any damage whatsoever as a result of following the instructions contained in this file. No portion of this file is endorsed by Nokia and I am unable to help you with other problems you may have with your Nokia receiver or associated equipment.
