1. Introduction
The Nokia Wireless Stereo Headset (HS-12W) allows you to make and receive phone calls, and listen to FM radio and music tracks. Read this user guide carefully before using the headset. Read also the user guide for your phone, which provides important safety and maintenance information. Keep the headset out of reach of small children.
Radio data system (RDS)
The FM radio of the headset supports the RDS technology. RDS allows you to view the name of the selected radio channel on the headset display. RDS also keeps the headset automatically tuned into the selected radio channel as long as the channel is available in your location. RDS may not work with all radio channels or in all countries.
Bluetooth wireless technology
Bluetooth wireless technology makes it possible to connect compatible communication devices without using cables. A Bluetooth connection does not require that the phone and the headset be in line of sight, but both devices should be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other. Connections can be subject to interference from obstructions, such as walls, or other electronic devices. The wireless headset is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 2.0 supporting the following profiles: Headset Profile 1.1, Hands-free Profile 1.0, Advanced Audio Copyright 2005 Nokia. Distribution Profile (A2DP) 1.0, Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.0, and General Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP) 1.0. Check with the manufacturers of other devices to determine their compatibility with this device. There may be restrictions on using Bluetooth technology in some locations. Check with your local authorities or service provider.
2. Get started
The headset contains the following parts: Display (1) Call/play key Volume down key Volume up key Power key Stop key (5) (6) (4) (2) (3)
Neck strap clip (7) ties up the strap laces. Headset clip (8) attaches the headset to your clothing. Key lock switch Music key Rewind key (10) (11) (12) Fast forward key (9)
Strap lock (13) fastens the neck strap. Microphone (14) picks up your voice. You can press the key on the microphone to answer or end a call, or to play a music track.
Earpieces (15) relay the caller's voice and the sounds from the radio or audio player. Before you can start using the headset, you must charge the battery and pair the headset with a compatible phone.
Note: Parts of the headset are magnetic. Metallic materials may be attracted to the headset, and persons with a hearing aid should not hold the headset to the ear with the hearing aid. Do not place credit cards or other magnetic storage media near the headset, because information stored on them may be erased.
Chargers and batteries
Check the model number of any charger before using it with this device. The Nokia Wireless Stereo Headset (HS-12W) is intended for use with the AC-1, ACP-12, and LCH-12 chargers. Warning: Use only batteries and chargers approved by Nokia for use with this particular enhancement. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be dangerous. For availability of approved enhancements, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord.
Charge the battery
This device has an internal, non-removable, rechargeable battery. Do not attempt to remove the battery from the device as you may damage the headset.
1. Connect the charger cable to the headset. 2. Connect the charger to a wall outlet. The battery indicator scrolls on the display during charging. Charging the battery fully may take up to 2 hours depending on the charger. 3. When the battery is fully charged, the battery indicator stops scrolling, and and a note are displayed. Disconnect the charger from the wall outlet and the headset. The fully charged battery has power for up to 8 hours of talk-time or up to 200 hours of standby time. However, the talk and standby times may vary when used with different mobile phones, products that use a Bluetooth connection, usage settings, usage styles, and environments. Switch the headset on or off
To switch the headset on, press and hold the power key. The headset beeps and displays the Nokia text. To switch the headset off, press and hold the power key. The headset beeps.
Pair the headset with a compatible phone
1. Switch on your phone and the headset. 2. Activate the Bluetooth feature on the phone, and set the phone to search for Bluetooth devices. See the user guide of your phone for instructions.
3. Select the headset (HS-12W) from the list of found devices. 4. Enter the passcode 0000 to pair and connect the headset to your phone. You can set your phone to connect with the headset automatically when the headset is switched on. To do this in Nokia phones, change your paired device settings in the Bluetooth menu.
Disconnect the headset from the phone
To disconnect the headset from your phone (for example, to connect the phone to another Bluetooth device), do one of the following: Switch off the headset. Disconnect the headset in the Bluetooth menu of your phone. Move the headset more than 10 meters (30 feet) away from the phone. You do not need to delete the pairing with the headset to disconnect it.
Reconnect the paired headset to your phone

3. Basic use
Wear the earpieces
For a better fit of the earpieces, you can remove the rubber rings around the earpieces or replace them with soft ear pads for enhanced audio quality. The headset comes with three pairs of soft ear pads.
Warning: When using the stereo headset your ability to hear outside sounds may be affected. Do not use the stereo headset where it can endanger your safety.
Adjust the earpiece volume
Press the volume up or volume down key to adjust the earpiece volume. To adjust the volume quickly, press and hold either key. The volume level is shown on the display.
Call handling
Make a call
To make a call, use your phone in the normal way when the headset is connected to your phone. If your phone supports redialing, press the call/play key twice.
If your phone supports voice dialing, press and hold the call/play key until appears on the display. Say the voice tag. The phone dials the related phone number. Voice dialing and redialing are not available during a call or when you are listening to the radio or music.
Answer a call
When you receive a call, the ringing tone selected on your phone sounds, and and the callers name are shown on the display if your Nokia phone supports the transfer of this information into the headset. If the callers name is unknown, the callers number or Call is shown instead. To answer a call, press the call/play key, press the key on the microphone, or use the phone keys. If the automatic answer function is set on in your phone, the phone automatically answers the call after one ring. To reject an incoming call, press the call/play key twice. If you receive another call during a call, is shown on the display. To end the ongoing call and answer the new call, press the call/play key twice.
End a call
To end a call, press the call/play key, press the key on the microphone, or use the phone keys.
Mute or unmute the microphone
To mute or unmute the microphone during a call, press the power key briefly.
Switch the call between phone and headset
To switch the call between the headset and a compatible Nokia phone, press and hold the call/play key of the headset, or use the respective function in your phone.
Listen to the audio player
You can listen to the audio player of your phone or a compatible music playing device. If you receive a call when listening to the player, the player is paused until the call ends.
Warning: Listen to music at a moderate level. Continuous exposure to high volume may damage your hearing.
To use the stop key, music key, fast forward and rewind keys of the headset, your phone must support the Audio Video Remote Control Profile, see Bluetooth wireless technology on page 6. If your phone does not support this profile, start the audio player on your phone. When the audio player is on, is shown on the display. To start the audio player, press the music key, or go to the audio player function in your phone. See the user guide of your phone for details. To play a specific track, select it in the audio player of your phone.
To select the next track, press the fast forward key. To select the previous track, press the rewind key. To pause the audio player, press the stop key. To restart it, press the call/play key. To stop the audio player, press the stop key twice.
Listen to the radio
You can use the FM radio of the headset also without connecting the headset to a phone. If you receive a call while listening to the radio, the radio is muted until the call ends. To switch on the radio, press the music key twice. If the headset is not connected to your phone or you are listening to the audio player, press the music key once. When the radio is on, is shown on the display. To search for radio channels, press and hold the fast forward or rewind key for a few seconds. To stop searching for new channels, press the stop key. To fine tune a found channel, press the fast forward or rewind key while the channel number is blinking on the display. To save a found channel in the headset memory, press the call/play key. You can save up to 20 channels. The memory location of the current channel is shown after the indicator. If you save a channel when all the memory locations are occupied, the new channel replaces the old one in the first memory location. To select a saved channel and listen to it, press the fast forward or rewind key. To switch off the radio, press the music key, or press and hold the stop key.
To delete a channel, you need to reset the headset to its original settings. All the saved channels are cleared. To change from the FM radio frequency default range (87.5 to 108 MHz) to the range used in Japan (76 to 90 MHz), press and hold the fast forward and rewind keys until the new frequency range is shown. Changing the range resets all the saved channels.
Lock or unlock the keys
Slide the key lock switch towards the top of the headset to lock or towards the music key to unlock the headset keys. A note and are displayed. When the keys are locked, all key presses are ignored. If you receive a call, the keys are unlocked until you end the call.
View the time
When the headset is connected to a compatible phone, the headset shows the current time in the standby mode if your phone supports the transfer of this information into the headset. (In the standby mode, the headset is switched on but not used.) To adjust the time, use the clock function in your phone.
Missed calls and received messages
When you miss a call, is shown on the display. shows that you have at least one unread text or multimedia message that you can view on the phone.
You are notified of new messages and missed calls only if your Nokia phone supports the transfer of this information into the headset.
Reset the headset
To reset the headset to its original settings, press and hold the power key and the volume up key for 10 seconds. The display indicates when the headset is reset. After the reset, you need to pair the headset with your phone to use the headset.
4. Battery information
Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The full performance of a new battery is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. Recharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers designated for this device. Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and the device when not in use. Do not leave a fully charged battery connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge over time. Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use any charger or battery that is damaged. Leaving the device in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditions, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. Always try to keep the battery between 15C and 25C (59F and 77F). A device with a hot or cold battery may not work temporarily, even when the battery is fully charged. Battery performance is particularly limited in temperatures well below freezing. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle when possible. Do not dispose as household waste.
Care and maintenance
Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggestions below will help you protect your warranty coverage. Keep all accessories and enhancements out of the reach of small children. Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. If your device does get wet, allow the device to dry completely before replacing it. Do not attempt to remove the battery from the device. Do not use or store the device in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts and electronic components can be damaged. Do not store the device in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics. Do not store the device in cold areas. When the device returns to its normal temperature, moisture can form inside the device and damage electronic circuit boards. Do not attempt to open the device. Do not drop, knock, or shake the device. Rough handling can break internal circuit boards and fine mechanics. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the device. Do not paint the device. Paint can clog the moving parts and prevent proper operation. All of the above suggestions apply equally to your device, battery, charger, or any enhancement. If any device is not working properly, take it to the nearest authorized service facility for service.
