PP V12.1, as is, is unfit for regular productive use. It is worse than a beta version. Like the support to date.

I elected not to upgrade but to perform a clean install of WIN 7 OS. AFter an uneventful install and verification that all was well. I have searched over and over for home document management software. PaperPort beats every program out there in features, interface.

Introduction
This guide provides instructions for installing the software associated with Scan to PC Desktop in a network environment. Targeted users are administrators, Information Technology specialists or programmers who set up or perform network installations. It assumes the reader is familiar with Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Server with Active Directory or with Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS), in addition to program package setup, advertising and distribution. Network installation enables a network administrator to manage and distribute software applications without the need to visit each client system. If you are upgrading and you have any previous versions of the Scan to PC Desktop software components on client systems, make sure you uninstall them first and only then proceed with the installation. In the installation sequence, first administrative images of the applications (the components of Scan to PC Desktop) should be created on the server. Then the server should be configured to automatically "push" the applications onto the client machines.

Scan to PC Desktop software components
Scan to PC Desktop is delivered in two variants: Special Edition and Professional Edition. These two editions of Scan to PC Desktop comprise different software products from Nuance. All the installers of these software components support MSI (Windows Installer-based) distribution. Software components for Special Edition CD-ROM: Software component

PaperPort 11 SE OmniPage SE 16 Image Retriever 9 PaperPort Image Printer
Software components for Professional Edition CD-ROM: Software component
PaperPort Professional 11 OmniPage Professional 16 Image Retriever 9 PaperPort Image Printer RealSpeak Solo SharePoint Link ODMA Link PDF Converter Professional 5
Any combination of the products on the CD-ROMs can be installed under the following limitations: 1.) To install Image Retriever, you must install PaperPort first. 2.) To ensure full functionality of PaperPort Professional 11 and OmniPage Professional 16, PDF Converter Professional 5 must also be installed. 3.) To install SharePoint Link or ODMA link, you must install PaperPort first. 4.) To ensure full functionality of PDF Converter Professional 5, RealSpeak Solo must also be installed. You can create as many administrative images on a network location as many software components Scan to PC Desktop includes.

Windows 2000/2003 Server with Active Directory Support
Active Directory is a feature of Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows 2003 Server. Group Policy, a component of Active Directory, includes a Software Installation snap-in that enables an administrator to create a network installation. The administrator can use this feature to install software to Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista clients only. The snapin cannot be used to install software to clients with older versions of the Windows operating system. In general, Active Directory supports three main installation scenarios: Publish to Users, Assign to Users, and Assign to Computers. The software components of Scan to PC Desktop support the Assign to Computers scenario only. This will successfully install the software on next system reboot.
Installation can be delayed on Windows XP clients when the administrator enables logon optimization for group policy: for this type of installation, an entry can be viewed in the event log after the first reboot. The installation takes place silently, and the software is installed for all users of the given computer. The screenshot above illustrates this case.

Systems Management Server Support
Systems Management Server (SMS) provides a mechanism for pushing application installations out from the server to client systems. SMS supports all versions of Windows 2000, XP and Vista when installing products that use Windows Installer (MSI) technology. SMS requires that a client application be installed on all client machines. PaperPort was tested using SMS version 2.0 with Service Pack 2 and Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4. Be aware that it does not support Windows NT 4.0. The software components of Scan to PC Desktop were tested using SMS Server version 2.0 with Service Pack 4 and SMS Server 2003 with Service Pack 3. SMS enables you to deploy a setup package per User or per System. The software components have been verified to work in the per System configuration only. The per System installation of the components can be configured to run either unattended or attended. Instructions for controlling this process are provided below. All the software components of Scan to PC Desktop use Windows Installer Technology. The official Microsoft document describing the usage of Windows Installer-based applications with SMS (entitled "Deploying Windows Installer Setup Packages with Systems Management Server 2.0"). The document is available at http://www.microsoft.com/smserver/techinfo/deployment/20/

Creating administrative images
This section describes how to create administrative images of the software components of Scan to PC Desktop onto the network. Such an administrative installation will extract the necessary files into a network location specified during the installation. This location is also known as a Software Distribution Point. An administrative installation will not install any program files. Administrators can run an administrative installation from the command line by using the /a command line option. Users in a workgroup who have access to this administrative image can then install the product from this source. or SETUP /a MSIEXEC /a <MSI-filename> The following options can be used together with the SETUP executable:
Setup option /a /v /L (followed by the Windows Language Code) Description Administrative installation option. This instructs SETUP.exe to perform an administrative installation instead of a normal installation. Precedes the list of arguments or properties that are passed to the Windows Installer. If applicable, specifies the setup language to use for installation. The following language codes are supported: 1031=German 1033=English 1034=Spanish 1036=French 1040=Italian 1046=Brazilian-Portuguese 1046=Russian
Creating administrative images of the components
To create an administrative image on the network for any application
1. Use the below tables to locate the installer of the application on the CD-ROM. 2. Launch SETUP.exe or MSIEXEC with appropriate command line options including the administrative installation option: SETUP /a or MSIEXEC /a "ScanSoft PaperPort 11.msi" or e.g. for German setup language: SETUP /a /L1031

Deployment - Active Directory
This section describes how to install the software components of Scan to PC Desktop onto clients systems using Active Directory.

Prerequisites

A working Active Directory environment. A Software Distribution Point (with administrative images of the software components) A deployment target computer that is a member of a domain, site, or organizational unit. MSI 3.1 installed on the target computer.
Note: Windows 2000 clients may not have MSI 3.1 installed. In such cases make sure you install it first. Download it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/89380. This website also provides comprehensive information on MSI 3.1. You can also find this installer in the folder of the PaperPort component (PP11PRO\PaperPort\Utilities\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) on the CD-ROM.
On 32-bit systems, you also need to use vcredist_x86.exe; whereas on 64-bit systems, both vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe. You can download these components from Microsofts website. You can also find them on the CD-ROM in the following folders: vcredist_x86.exe is in the PREREQ folder in the CD root vcredist_x64.exe is in the PREREQ\System64 folder in the CD root To install them, proceed as follows: 32-bit systems: Run vcredist_x86.exe /t:<full path>32 /c. This self-extracting executable will create a folder at the path you specified with the suffix 32 added to its name. Use the vcredist.msi file unpacked to this folder for product installation. 64-bit systems: Do the above step, then repeat it for vcredist_x64.exe as well to unpack the.msi file needed for installation on 64-bit systems. To do this, use the following command line: vcredist_x64.exe /t:<full path>64 /c.

Installation order

Before starting to install any component of Scan to PC Desktop, please ensure that InstallShield's Installscript engines and the redistributable vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe packages are installed on the target computer. Note that software components on the CD-ROM require Installscript v10 engine installer (ISSCRIPT10.msi) to be installed. You can find the Installscript v10 engine installer in the folder of the PaperPort component (in PP11PRO\PaperPort) on the CD-ROM.

Microsoft introduced a new feature in Windows XP called Fast Logon Optimization. This feature will typically log the user in quickly even off the network. 14 of 19
This causes software installation via group policy to sometimes take many reboots to actually install managed software (you must reboot at least once after the group policy change just to refresh the policy on the local machine plus once to install the software. If Windows Vista is not installed; Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 is required in order to save to DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX file formats (Microsoft Office 2007 formats) The Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 can be installed on Windows XP but cannot be installed on Windows 2000. Sound card is optionally required for using the functionality of the supplied Text-To-Speech Engine. Microsoft Office 2007 (SP 1) is required to leverage the complete functionality included for XPS files. Notes on Using Image Retriever with a Xerox Phaser 8560 MFP Device
To ensure proper functioning between Image Retriever and this device, follow the steps below: First, install your device driver. Launch the Xerox Scan Utility application. Use this to create one or more user templates. Each will contain a folder that you can set as the watched one for Image Retriever. Then install Image Retriever. Finally, set the Image Retriever watch folder to the one specified by the user template you wish to use. Image Retriever can watch only one user template-specified folder at a time. To change this, select a folder specified by another user template.
Image Retriever setup Folder polling
Enable this setting to monitor a specified folder on a networked file server or local drive for incoming scanned images generated by a Xerox device. Click this checkbox in the Image Retriever Settings dialog to enable Image Retriever to monitor the folder of your choice. Click the Browse. button to display the Browse for Folder dialog box. This dialog box lets you locate and select the folder you want Image Retriever to monitor: After you identify the directory to be monitored and click OK, the Browse for Folder dialog box closes. Image Retriever can periodically monitor this folder to see if any scanned images are placed there by the Xerox system.

To set how often the watched folder or monitored inbox will be checked, select a setting from the Interval for checking list box. The following choices are available from the list box: 1, 2, 5, 10, or 30 seconds 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes In addition to the above values, you could also select Never. In this case Image Retriever will continue running but watching is suspended. One option is to select Never for the interval and only press the Get Now button when you know that there are scanned images to be retrieved from your network folder. For additional info, see the Image Retriever setup Get Now button section of this document.
One suggestion is to set the watch interval at about half the time it takes you to walk from the devices location in your company to your office. If it takes you 60 seconds to walk this distance, set the interval to 30 seconds. This way the document that you scanned can be ready and waiting for you on your PaperPort desktop!
Image Retriever setup Get Now button
Click the Get Now button if you wish to scan the folder or inbox of your choice immediately. Image Retriever does the monitoring on whichever component is checked. That is, if Watch Document Repository Folder is checked, Image Retriever will immediately scan the selected folder; whereas if Watch for scanned files in your e-mail inbox is checked, your Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes inbox will be polled for new PDF, TIFF, or XPS e-mail attachments generated by a Xerox device. In either case, the relevant signal of the Image Retriever icon on the system tray will change to Processing state (light green). Image Retriever will place the new items appearing in the watched folder or inbox on the PaperPort desktop and will launch the PaperPort application - unless you have specified Dont run PaperPort in the Image Retriever Settings dialog.
Image Retriever setup Transfer documents setting
To specify where Image Retriever is to place the retrieved files, click Browse and choose a PaperPort folder.
Image Retriever setup When documents are retrieved setting
Specify the behavior you prefer for document retrieval. The When documents are retrieved setting offers three choices : Run PaperPort in a window Run PaperPort minimized Dont run PaperPort Click OK in the Image Retriever Settings dialog box to confirm Image Retriever settings.
Personalized MFP Scanning
Personalized MFP Scanning is the ability to change the control panel on supported Multifunction Printers/Copiers so that it becomes customized with your own destination folders and scanning preferences. Image Retriever displays PaperPort folders and scanning profiles as well as the document conversion workflows of OmniPage stored on your local computer and allows you to "push" these settings to the control panel of the Multifunction Printer/Copier through the PaperPort PSP Server. When you identify yourself to the MFP through a log-in screen it will automatically change the control panel to reflect your personal folder destinations and scanning preferences. The PaperPort PSP Server requires Image Retriever on your local machine and the ability to control the MFP through a specially designed software interface. On select Xerox machines this ability is referred to as the Xerox Extensible Interface Platform (EIP) Advanced Development Software for Xerox Multifunction Printers. The following devices currently support the Xerox Extensible Interface Platform (EIP) and PaperPort PSP Personalized MFP Scanning: WorkCentre 56xx WorkCentre 76xx WorkCentre Pro 2xx WorkCentre 73xx WorkCentre 52xx WorkCentre 72xx WorkCentre 74xx

Full description

PaperPort Professional 10 makes it easier than ever to work with files on a PC or a network. In the most significant design enhancement since PaperPort's inception, PaperPort Professional 10 implements a Split Desktop and Workspace, allowing users to work in multiple folder locations at the same time. Users can set their PaperPort desktop to show folders on their own local PC, and across a standard Microsoft network. Files can be copied or moved between remote folders, printed, faxed or sent by email with a simple drag and drop, while new Bookmarks allow specific folder locations to be accessed in the future with a single click. Users also have the option of using PaperPort in its original, classic single desktop mode.
