Getting started
1. Open the rear cover
Remove the rear cover by placing the phone in one hand with the keypad facing down in the palm of your hand. Press down on the back cover with your other hand and slide it open in the direction of the arrow.
2. Insert your SIM card
Open the SIM card door on the lower right. Insert the SIM card into the door with its gold-plated contacts facing down. Close the door and press down to lock it. Please be careful not to force any of the SIM reader components, as this may cause damage. It doesnt take much pressure to insert the SIM correctly.
3. Insert the battery and replace the cover
Carefully connect the battery so the gold contacts connect with the row of connectors on the top left hand side of the Xda IQ (just below the camera lens). You can only t the battery one way and you shouldnt need to use force. Gently press the battery down to secure it (therell be a small click as its locked into place). Slide the battery cover towards the camera lens then lightly snap into place.
Smart IQ: its a good idea to charge the battery for at least eight hours before you use your Xda IQ for the rst time.
4. Charge the battery
You need to charge the battery fully before using your Xda IQ for the rst time. Connect the AC charger to your Xda IQ and plug it into the wall. We recommend you use the AC adaptor the rst time you charge your Xda IQ, and not the PC synchronisation cable. A solid amber light shows your Xda IQ is being charged. This light will turn green when the battery is fully charged.
5. Turn on and set up for the rst time
Turn on your Xda IQ by pressing the power button on the top left-hand edge. Your Xda IQ will start to set itself up and add settings supplied by O2.
Smart IQ: youll block your SIM card if you enter the wrong PIN three times. This means you wont be able to make or receive any calls, texts or picture messages. Dont worry you can easily sort this out by contacting your service provider. Theyll unblock it for you right away.
6. Enter your PIN
When your Xda IQ restarts, it may ask you to enter the PIN for your SIM. All new connections to O2 have a PIN on their SIM. Tap in your PIN and select Enter. If youre an O2 Ireland customer, please enter the PUK code supplied with your SIM or call Customer Service on 1909.
7. Synchronise with your PC
Because your Xda IQ is designed to complement your PC as a smartphone, you can work with the same information in both places. You can synchronise your Xda IQ with Microsoft Outlook on your PC. This will let you keep a copy of your address book, appointments and emails on both your Xda IQ and computer. Whenever you add appointments or write emails on your phone, you can copy them across to your PC each time you connect. This way, youll always have a back up copy of your information.
To synchronise your Xda IQ with your Windows PC, you need to install Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1. Youll nd ActiveSync on the Getting Started CD in your Xda IQ box, along with a copy of Microsoft Outlook 2002 and a single PC licence. After youve installed ActiveSync, connect the USB cable to your PC and Xda IQ, then follow the on-screen instructions to get synchronised.
Now youre set up, lets get going.

2s Xda series covers all the business smartphone bases. From the giant PDA-type Argon, through to the more compact sat nav savvy Orbit and onto the phone-orientated Graphite. Whatever your smartphone tastes, O2 will no doubt hit the spot with one of its devices. The networks latest member, the Xda Graphite, is aimed at suits that demand a phone form factor without the feature compromise. Its manufactured by Asus and arrives packed with a Windows Mobile OS, built-in Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities. You can tell from its sober design and two-tone battleship grey finish thats its boardroom material. The Graphite may have a solid construction, but it remains lightweight and will easily slip into the inside suit pocket. Look at the Sony Ericsson K810i the nearest vital stats comparison. The keypad sports bold sizeable buttons to aid text typing or more lengthy email writing, while elsewhere, the joystick has a domed top that occasionally proves slippery to grip. Its not a major gripe because the nub is lucid to thumb. Unfortunately, the Graphite isnt powered by the latest Windows Mobile 6 version, rather the previous 5.0 platform. Even so, youre still

privy to the integrated push-email capabilities and you can seamlessly synch your contacts, calendar, tasks and notes from the Outlook on your PC with your handset. You can also view and edit your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents through the Microsoft Office suite and send them as email attachments. The Graphite has built-in Wi-Fi to hook up with W-LAN hotspots for broadband speeds when internet browsing, checking your emails or downloading on the fly. Its easy to get connected and web pages load quickly via the Pocket Internet Explorer browser. Move out of range, and you still have a brisk 3G connection to fall back on. The bright and detailed 2.2-inch display is spacious enough to view websites, emails and messages. A front-loaded VGA camera is on hand if you dabble in one-on-one video conferencing over a 3G connection. The quality is juddery and pixelated,
but good enough to see the whites of callers eyes. The Graphite may be built for business, but its not all about spreadsheets and PIM functionality. The device harbours a two-megapixel camera with a crude LED flashlight that shoots in a 1600x1200-pixel resolution. Picture quality is sufficient for the casual snapper, but some suits may find this a hindrance with business practices banning camera phones from their premises for security reasons. The Windows Media Player also spins your MP3 and WMA music files and a microSD card slot sits alongside 64MB of internal memory for storage. The Xda Graphite wont make the style mile, but for the hard-nosed business bod, this handset is a nononsense and efficient smartphone without the bulk of a PDA-type device. Nick Renshaw
