DM-2 / DM-4 Supported File Formats Overview The Olympus DM-2 and DM-4 digital audio recorders are Mass Storage Class devices. Therefore, when either recorder is connected to a computer via its bundled USB cable, the operating system treats the recorder as an external hard drive. Files of any type and format may be transferred to the recorder for storage. However, files in unsupported formats cannot be played by the recorder, and the files may not be displayed on its LCD monitor. Supported file formats The following table illustrates which types of audio files the DM-2 and DM-4 support in each mode:
File Format WAV5 MP36 Sampling Frequency Bit Rate Recorder Mode Yes Yes Music Mode1,2 Yes Yes Podcast Mode1,3 No Yes Audio Book Mode1,4 No Yes
48 kHz, 44.1 kHz MPEG1 Layer 3: 48 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 32 kHz MPEG2 Layer 3: 24 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 16 kHz
16 bit 8 kbps to 320 kbps
48 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 5 kbps to 32 kHz, 22 kHz, 320 kbps 16 kHz, 11 kHz, 8 kHz
This recorder does not support the Digital Rights Management (DRM) system of Microsoft Corporation. Music, podcast and audio book files protected by DRM cannot be played even if they were recorded using a supported sampling frequency and bit rate. Music files must be stored in the recorders Music folder. Podcast files must be stored in the recorders Podcast folder.
Audio books in the MP3 or WMA format must be stored in the Audio Book folder, a subfolder of the Audiobooks folder. Audio content, including audio books, purchased from Audible.com has a file extension of.AA; this recorder can play.AA files if they are stored in the Audible folder, also a subfolder of the Audiobooks folder. This recorder can play WAV files if they were recorded in the Linear PCM format. Variable bit rate MP3 files (in which conversion bit rates can vary) may not play properly.

DM-4 and DM-2 Firmware Update 1.1 Purpose Olympus has released updated firmware for the DM-4 and DM-2 digital recorders. After updating the firmware, the following enhancements will become available: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------v1.1
The start-up speed from the time the power is turned on to the time the recorder is ready to record is improved. In the Audio Diary, the Voice Guide can read the date and month of dates selected from the Calendar view as well as the date and time of scheduled settings. When moving forward or backward through the Audio Diary dates, press the [OK] button to hear the Voice Guide announce the new date and month. The volume level of each Voice Guide setting (Volume1 to Volume5) and Beep setting (05 to 01) is louder. The recorder can resume playback of DAISY files from the last position at which playback was stopped (DM-4 only). Additional playback options are available in the DM-4, as described below. The options are activated from the Book Menu (Fig. A), which can be accessed by pressing the Menu button while the recorder is in Audiobooks mode. (Playback must be stopped.) o The Skip Mode function (Fig. B) sets the interval by which the recorder navigates through DAISY content. The 0 and 9 buttons can now be configured to jump backward or forward in the file by Section, Group, Page, Phrase or Bookmark. (Fig. C) (DM-4 only). o The Character function (Fig. D) specifies which character encoding scheme the Text Speech function will use when reading a text file. The choices are ANSI, UTF-8 or UTF-16. (DM-4 only).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------v1.01 The [STOP] button becomes a shortcut button to exit any menu. Press and hold [STOP] to return to the Home screen. The Schedule Settings function of the Audio Diary has a new sound cue to distinguish the base values of date and time variables from all other possible values. This will assist blind and visually impaired users with configuring the Date, Start Time and Stop Time settings. The base values are 12AM (hour), 00 (minute), 2010 (year), 01 (month), and 01 (day). An alarm sound is played when the battery charge is completed. The Voice Guide can read and say the titles of files in the Audio Book and Text Speech folders. The recorder complies with PC Machine-dependent characters. This expands the number and variety of DAISY books that can be played on the recorder. Audible Chapter Compliance is added. Content purchased or downloaded from Audible.com may include pre-set Chapters. The chapter in Audible.com content is similar to the index mark in voice recordings made by Olympus digital recorders. Both are used to bookmark points in the recording for quick reference. When playing audible.com content that includes chapters, the user can move through the file by chapter.
Who should use this update? The performance enhancements benefit all users. The ability to choose a character encoding scheme benefits users of the Text to Speech function, particularly those who use it to read nonEnglish text. The enhanced support for DAISY content will primarily benefit blind and visually impaired users who purchase DAISY-compliant content, such as books or magazines.
How can I check the recorders firmware version? To check the firmware version of the DM-4 or DM-2, do the following: 1. From the Home display, press the [+] button to select Preferences, and then press the [OK] button. 2. Press [+] to select System Menu, and then press [OK]. 3. Press [+] to select System Info, and then press [OK]. This screen will display the model number, firmware version and serial number of the recorder.
