A Paranormal Investigation Of

KRQE Channel 13

13 Broadcast Plaza SW, Albuquerque, NM 87104 By the
Paranormal Society of Albuquerque
Saturday October 18, 2008

Introduction:

KRQE Channel 13 is a local Albuquerque New Mexico television news station. The station began operation at the current location in October, 1953 as KGGM-TV. In 1991 KGGM was sold and renamed KRQE. KRQE is located inside a large commercial building of brick, concrete and metal frame. It is located on the southwest side of Albuquerque, on the corners of Lead and Broadcast Plaza. Over the years it has been remodeled an undetermined number of times changing the original floor plan of the building. Over the years one death was known to transpire in the building and other deaths had ties to the building. Employees have reported experiences in the building from cold spots, being touched, uneasy feelings, sounds, and reflections. Witnessed experiences: A female employee stated hearing a sigh coming from the spiral stair case when was no one was there. Another female employee reports while in the employee lounge area, seeing a reflection of a bald man in a glass door behind her, when she turned to see who was there, she discovered she was alone. She had another experience of the sensation of a breath down her neck, while she was in the employee lounge, again discovering there was no one there. There are employee reports of uneasiness in the uppermost video storage room behind the equipment room. A previous employee working late nights/early mornings reported when she was in the film room off the catwalk she would hear footsteps on the catwalk, even though no one else was in the area, and most of the time no one else was in the building.
Non-witnessed experiences: None reported. It is possible due to the number of employees and shifts worked in the building that if something was out of place it would be thought to have been done by a previous shift.

Location:

KRQE Channel 13 is located in southwestern Albuquerque, at the corner of Lead and Broadcast Plaza.

Building Description:

KRQE Channel 13 is located inside a large commercial building of brick, concrete and steel frame. It is believed to have been built to serve as a film studio in the early to mid 1900s. After being remodeled an indeterminate number of times, the building now facilitates a broadcast studio, electrical equipment, multiple equipment rooms, film storage rooms, restrooms, employee lounges, advertising department, business offices and conference rooms, spread over three floors. It should be noted a small unused helicopter pad is on the roof. There is a large fenced yard adjacent to the North side of the building which holds large satellite dishes, and parking for company vehicles.

History:
During the early to mid 1900s the 13 Broadcast Plaza building, was constructed and used as a film studio. Based on research Channell Grahm was one of the architects responsible for the design or remodeling. The building became KGGM in the mid 1900s and renamed KRQE in 1991, after being sold. The building was known to be remodeled in the 1990s and in 2008, with the remodeling of the advertising/(NW ground floor) area being completed in the last couple of months before this investigation. There have been 4 deaths associated with the building. The first being Captain Billy of local childrens TV fame, who was an actor named Stretch Scherer. On an October day in the 1960s, was shot in the reception lobby of KGGM by an incensed husband. He died in the hospital over a month later from the wounds. Leonard Cooper collapsed of a heart attack in the NE hallway outside the N ground floor conference room. He was rushed to the hospital and died several days later. Jack Mahoney expired from a massive heart attack in a stall in the mens restroom just south of the receptionist area. A handy man while working at Channel 13 doing odd jobs was responsible for taking his own life, off site. It is the belief of those interviewed, that these may be the ghosts or the reason for the unexplained experiences employees have at Channel 13.

Previous Paranormal Investigations:
No official ghost investigations have been conducted in the building before. No known psychics or mediums have been invited into the building to contact the spirits.

Investigation Procedure

At 8:00 PM on October 18th, 2008, Tim Maestas gave an interview and tour of the active areas of the Channel 13 building, to the entire team. Baseline EMF, temperature, and photographic data were collected. Throughout the evening these measurements were retaken. A 15 minute evocation and six EVP sessions were conducted in the following rooms/areas. On the ground floor the NE conference room and North hallway, office/copy room to the northeast of the conference room, reception area, break room 3rd floor conference room and film closet.

Interview Records:

Glen Sanchez, one of the production department directors reports seeing the reflection of someone walking behind him in a T.V. monitor years ago. When he turned around no one was there. He says it was in the same area where an engineer had a heart attack and died. Gina Galindo, the production manager reports seeing someone punch a black curtain she was hanging for a special T.V. production. When she looked behind the curtain no one was there. She also reports hearing a sigh while working in her upstairs office. She looked around and saw no one. Mary Ann Hatchitt, the weekend producer , reports seeing a ghostly reflection just last weekend.

Baseline Data

Temperature Data The outside temperate was approximately 71 degrees F at 8:00 PM. The inside temperatures at 8:30 PM were: Conference room: 72 degrees F Reception lobby: 72 degrees F Break room: 71 degrees F Office/copier Room: 71 degrees F rd 3 floor conference room 67 degrees F 74 degrees F 3rd floor film closet
EMF Data The Tri Field natural EMF meter detected some disturbance in the hallway E of the ground floor conference room with no other reportable disturbances during the investigation. Cell Sensor EMF Data The baseline Cell Sensor data showed significant EMF energy throughout the building and throughout the investigation. In the 3rd floor film room it appeared to respond in rapid flashes to questions asked, for a period of 10 minutes. K 2 Meter detected significant EMF energy throughout the building during the baseline with no reported changes during the investigation.
Photographic Data Photos were taken throughout the building, both with and without flash. Some questionable photos were obtained and have been emailed to Tim. Video Data Video recordings were made by Louis of Channel 13.

Investigation Results

Temperature Data Temperatures were consistent with baseline temperature readings through out the investigation.
EMF Data The Trifield meter showed some disturbances during baseline outside the ground floor -12-
conference room in the E hallway. There were unexplained spikes on the Cell Meter that occurred in the 3rd floor film closet during the EVP session. They appeared to be coinciding with the questions being asked. Kay asked if the spirit would make the meter flash once for yes and no flash for no. The meter then flashed multiple times in rapid session. When asked to flash fast for yes it appeared to respond to questions. It is noted that there were large satellite dishes, scanner radios, multiple filming equipment and monitors in close proximity which could interfere with the meter, causing it to spike. EVP Data EVP samples were gathered by Kay, Traci, Sherri, Rob, Jason and Doreen. Due to news broadcasts being given throughout the night there was substantial background noise interference with our observations for anything unusual. Kay and Jason reported recorded sounds of static, indistinguishable from the background noise. The Audacity time mark was 22:11 for Kay. Doreen reported N hallway 18 minute mark on recorder a voice saying get out of here Sherri reported the following EVPs: A05050101232710 -Evocation 5:35 5:37 a whisper A06050101141148 -N hallway 3:40 3:45 unusual voice (same time as Doreens) A16050101202653 -copier area/back office 3:4 3:7 faint voice/question Photographic Data More than 200 photographs were taken during the evening, both with and without flash. Kay and Doreen had orbs taken with flash which are not submitted for evidence due to the easy recreation of them. Taylor and Traci reported one photo of an unexplained shadow. Rob submitted one photo with an orb. Video Data Channel 13 Louis, recorded the 3rd floor film room, EMF session and responses.

Personal Experiences During EVPs in the ground floor office/copy room, Vince (from Ch 13) reported being poked in the back after getting a tingle or itch sensation. He was visibly disturbed by this. Several investigators reported sensations in the same room, and also on the stairs (by the elevator). There were also reports of a reflective shadow on the TV screen in the ground floor conference room during the evocation.
Kays (sensitive) information. This information came to her during the days before the investigation and before we had interviewed the staff. The following were her impressions:
During the week leading up to the Channel 13 investigation the following comes to me. There are three men: The first came to me as Traci was giving me the name of Capt Billy over the phone. A tall thin man with an oblong face and long thin pointed nose. He had dark hair with a handlebar mustache. (he resembled Snidely Whiplasha cartoon character) He wore a top hat. (maybe a magicians hat) I saw a woman shooting him (I know it was said to be a man) She wore a trench coat style jacket that was tan and her hair curled on the ends and hung almost to her shoulders. The second man was a big man and looked like he was from the 80s-90s. Over 6 feet tall wide at the shoulders and probably weighed over 250lbs. I saw him holding his chest. (maybe died of a heart attack) He also had some attachment to flying.(maybe something to do with the helicopter) The third man I saw as being in his 30s medium build, fair complexion, light brown/dark blond hair and clean shaven. He had something to do with electricity or was electrocuted.

Conclusions

KRQE Channel 13 has potential for paranormal activity as evidenced by the numerous and continuing personal experiences of the employees. Some of our investigators also had personal experiences. However, during the investigation we were able to capture only some data with our instruments. It could be that the paranormal activity was quiet that night. Or it could be that we were in the wrong place at the wrong time. A follow-up visit is recommended during a time after broadcasts are completed for the night, and there is less human movement in the building.
There were a few questionable photographs and a few EVPs that were obtained during the investigation that were turned in for review.
