I researched home theater systems for about 3 weeks before I finally decided to go with the Onkyo 590. When I started looking at systems. Good sound, nice feature set, nice value. Cheap speaker wire, clicking noise when changing input sources

Doubt you could do better for the price I very much enjoy mine. It is hard to find a system for this price that sounds good and is reliable. Best BANG for your Buck ~~Please keep in mind this is not a $5000 BOSE system" I got this brand new for $150 in December 2006.

Packing Everything You NeedVersatility, Simplicity and Quality
Displaying every quality youd want from a home theater receiver packageversatility, user friendliness, and quality soundthe HT-S590 should be given serious consideration. Versatile in its ability to take all your components for output to HDTV; user friendly in its ease of set-up and operation; and quality in sound from its balanced blend of controlled power and competent digital signal processing. With a combined 720 watts power output, this package packs the drive and power to make your home entertainment a memorable experience. The HT-R340 5.1-channel receiver shares a similar amplification design as Onkyos separate home theater receivers. Also, the accompanying HTP-340 speaker packages compactness enables you to bring this package to a range of different room sizes.
Component Video Switching (50 MHz) with Single Connection to HDTV With three component video inputs, you can have up to three of todays latest A/V componentsthink DVD/universal players, cable/set-top boxes, DVRs and the latest gaming consoles like the Xboxconnected simultaneously for output to the latest high-definition displays. With a frequency range out to 50 MHz, you have more than enough bandwidth to pass a progressive scan DVD signal (at least 12 MHz needed) and a 720p signal (at least 37 MHz needed) to high-definition displays with no deterioration on the video signal. Also, the convenience and simplicity of one component video output fit well with the HT-S590s focus on ease-of-setup. Bringing DTS Neo:6 5.1 Decoding for Matrix Surround Sound DTS Neo:6 is an advanced matrix decoder that takes any two-channel source (including VHS tapes, television broadcasts, CDs and DVDs) and expands it into five or six channels. It also provides separate, optimized modes for stereo music materials and matrix surround motion picture soundtracks. Previously, DTS Neo:6 was only available as part of DTS-ES (6.1 and above systems), and no DTS system existed for 5.1-channel systems. DTS have introduced DTS Neo:6 5.1, which like Dolby Digitals Pro Logic II, brings you a more revealing sound from ordinary stereo and a more expansive home cinema experience. Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry Conventional volume attenuation methods must initially drop a signal close to the noise floor at low volumes. Even though the signal is only tainted with a little noise, the amount increases when the signal is amplified. Onkyos Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is necessary. This signal never comes close to the noise floor, and thereby eliminates the possibility of noise contamination that plagues conventional volume-attenuation designs.
192 kHz/24-Bit Digital-to-Analog Convertors (DACs) for All Channels The HT-R340 receiver incorporates 192 kHz/24-bit DACs on every channel. With a much higher resolution than the incoming signal, these DACs enable the HT-S590 to generate more accurate audio playback. Also, the DACs 128x oversampling rate optimizes the signal-to-noise ratio and increases clock jitter tolerance. With Onkyos emphasis on audio processing with minimal signal noise, the inclusion of quality parts is a definite plus at the entry level. CinemaFILTER and OR-EQ Equalizer The tonal balance of a film soundtrack will be edgy and bright when played back over audio equipment in your home. This is because film soundtracks are designed to be played back in large theaters using different equipment. CinemaFILTER restores the correct tonal balance for watching a movie soundtrack in your smaller home theater. CinemaFILTER can be used with DTS and Dolby listening modes, and is easily activated from your remote control. Also, if you use the OR-EQ equalizer button, youll get a more powerful direct sound from movie sources. Rear Panel with Color-Coded Connections for Ease-of-Setup To get up and running quickly, coded connections for ease-the receivers rear panel is designed so that you can simply connect to your A/V components and speakers. Youll probably be making use of your component video inputs/output, which are conveniently located on the top left of the rear panel (as are the digital inputs for Dolby and DTS surround signals). You may also use the color-coded 5.1-multichannel inputs (perhaps to experience the splendor of Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio formats) to transfer a 5.1-multichannel signal. Connecting the HTP-340 speaker package is a straightforward exercise with the HT-R340s color-coded speaker terminals.
