TX-SR803
THX SELECT2 CERTIFIED 7.1-CHANNEL A/V SURROUND HOME THEATER RECEIVER
Available in Gold or Black

Remote Control

Driving Home Theater with Pinpoint Accuracy, Potent Power and Multi-Entertainment Options
To create an A/V home theater receiver of exceptional quality, the challenge lies in incorporating the delicate processing circuits and amplifier components into the same chassis. When they both draw on the same power source, the amplifier dominates at peak moments. In a good design, it all works smoothlyas with the THX Select2 Certified TX-SR803 7.1-channel A/V surround home theater receiver. You have a wealth of connectivity options, including HDMI (version 1.1) and component video for an effortless, high-bandwidth transfer of video and audio signals to the latest HDTV displays. Also, the inclusion of a TBC (Time Base Corrector) will effectively prevent any picture deterioration caused by timing inaccuracies. With numerous other features that help the TX-SR803 to stamp its classAuto Speaker Set-up with Microphone, multizone playback, VLSC (Vector Liner Shaping Circuitry) and 192 kHz/24-bit DACs on all channels, an RS232 port for control, and iPod playback capabilitiesthis receiver stands out as a powerful blend of superb engineering design and functionality.
2 HDMI Video/Audio Inputs and 1 Output With the TX-SR803s HDMI inputs and output, you have the ability to send unparalleled amounts (5 Gbps) of uncompressed digital data, both audio and video, to compatible digital devices through a single cable. Compared to the previous HDMI version 1.0, the TX-SR803s onboard HDMI version 1.1 is capable of handling up to 8 channels of audio with a sampling rate of 192 kHz (24-bit samples) and transmitting uncompressed audio from a DVD-Audio disc. THX Select2 Certified and THX Surround EX With THX Select2 certification, the TX-SR803 demonstrates that it has met the rigorous design and performance standards set by THX. For the end user, it enhances the overall systems ability to accurately present movies the way they were mixed by the filmmaker on the dubbing stage and its additional THX listening modes enhance playback performance of music, movies and video games. Furthermore, its ASA (Adaptive Speaker Array) technology optimizes playback of multi-channel movies, music and video games. THX Select2 also includes the THX Surround EX decoder, which enables sound mixers to encircle the audience with 360-degree pans and more realistic fly-over and ambient sound effects. VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) for All Channels The TX-SR803 incorporates Onkyos VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry), which employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to mitigate the effect of signal noise. As noise is magnified during the conversion process, even minimal amounts of noise can adversely affect audio quality. With VLSC, data is converted between the sampling points and these discrete sampling points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The resulta noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source. Independent Crossover Adjustment for Bass Management With the TX-SR803s crossover adjustment for bass management, you can independently set the frequency of your front, center, surround and surround back speakers at 40/60/70/80/90/100/120/150/200 Hz. Previously, crossover adjustment was limited to 40/60/80/100/120/150 Hz, so you will find that the TX-SR803 gives you greater scope to match different speakers and subwoofers to your system. Auto Speaker Set-up with Microphone The TX-SR803 uses a high-sensitivity microphone to pick up test tones from your favorite listening spot, and then uses an acoustic analyzer to adjust the sound pressure level and time delay of each channel. Test tones are output by each speaker, detected by the microphone and shown through an onscreen display. This ensures that each channels delivered synchronously, so you get the most accurate frequency response from your favorite listening spot. Easily calibrated using the TX-SR803s onscreen display and quickly completed in minutes, this function is also useful if you decide to switch rooms, or even move to another home. Multiroom Playback Capabilities through Powered Zone 2 Powered Zone 2 gives you the option of different sources throughout your home. With the Powered Zone 2 function, you can enjoy one input source in the main room and a different source in another room through two different connection methods: using a receiver/integrated amp in Zone 2 or using only a pair of speakers in Zone 2. In the former method, you can enjoy 7.1 surround sound in the main room and play a different AV source in Zone 2 (with the Zone 2 amplifier automatically switched on by a 12 V trigger). With the latter method, you can use 5.1 surround sound in the main room and play a different AV source (stereo) in Zone 2. Integrating the iPod into your System The TX-SR803s RI (Remote Interactive) capability enables you to integrate different Onkyo components for control through one remote. Also, you can simply connect the iPod to the TX-SR803 through the RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Whats more, the DS-A1 is one of the more versatile interfaces between the iPod and audio-video systems available offering you hands-free control, recharging capacity and even iPhoto playback. With Powered Zone 2, you can effectively send your digital music via the iPod to another room or outdoors, even if youre playing back multichannel music and movies in the main room.

Warning Messages In the warning messages, abbreviations are used to identify the speakers (e.g., L for left, R for right, and so on). Not Detect: The speaker was not detected. Make sure that its connected properly. Distance Error: The speaker is either too close or too far away, or the distance could not be measured. Reposition the speaker. Changing the Speaker Settings Manually: In some situations, the measurements taken by the automatic speaker setup may not provide usable results. If running the speaker setup a second time still doesnt provide usable results, youll have to set the speaker settings yourself (see pages 7075). Please note that any THX main speakers should be set to 80 Hz (THX). If you set up your speakers using Automatic Speaker Setup, please make sure manually that any THX speakers are set to 80 Hz (THX) in the Speaker Conguration setting (see pages 70, 71). Sometimes due to the electrical complexities of subwoofers and the interaction with the room, THX recommends setting the level and the distance of the subwoofer manually. Using a Powered Subwoofer: If youre using a powered subwoofer, because its positioned low down on the oor and outputting very low frequency sounds, its output may not be detected properly. If the subwoofer (abbreviation SW) appears on the Warning screen under Not Detect, turn up the subwoofers volume and run the automatic speaker setup again. If the subwoofer has a built-in crossover, set it to the highest crossover frequency. If it has an LPF lter switch, set it to off or direct. Refer to your subwoofers instruction manual for details.

Recording Audio and Video from Separate Sources
You can overdub audio onto your video recordings by simultaneously recording audio and video from two separate sources. This is possible because only the audio source is switched when an audio-only input source, such as TAPE, TUNER, or CD, is selected, the video source remains the same. In the following example, audio from the CD player connected to the CD IN and video from the camcorder connected to the VIDEO 4 INPUT VIDEO jack are recorded by the VCR connected to the VIDEO 1 OUT jacks.
Camcorder video signal audio signal
Recording the Input Source
Audio sources can be recorded to a recorder (e.g., cassette deck, CDR, MD) connected to the TAPE OUT or DIGITAL OPTICAL OUT jacks. Video sources can be recorded to a video recorder (e.g., VCR, DVD recorder) connected to the to VIDEO 1 OUT or VIDEO 2 OUT jacks. See pages 25 to 38 for hookup information.

Use the input selector buttons to select the source that you want to record. See Which Connections Should I Use? on page 25 to see which signals can be output and recorded. You can watch the source while recording. The AV receivers VOLUME control has no effect on recording.
Prepare the camcorder and CD player for playback. Prepare the VCR for recording. Press the [VIDEO 4] input selector button. Press the [CD] input selector button. This selects the CD player as the audio source but leaves the camcorder as the video source. Start recording on the VCR, then start playback on the camcorder and CD player. Video from the camcorder and audio from the CD player are recorded by the VCR.

CD TAPE

On your recorder, start recording. On the source component, start playback.
Note: If you select another input source during recording, that input source will be recorded.

Onscreen Setup Menus

About the Onscreen Setup Menus
The onscreen setup menus are displayed on the connected TV (not via the HDMI OUT) and provide a convenient way to change the AV receivers settings, which are arranged into two groups: First Time Setup and Advanced Setup. To get your system up and running, you must complete the First Time Setup settings. The Advanced Setup settings are more detailed and allow you to tailor the AV receiver to suit your requirements.

Learning Commands from Other Remote Controllers
The AV receivers remote controller can receive and learn commands from other remote controllers. By transmitting, for example, the Play command from your CD players remote controller, the remote controller can learn it and then transmit the exact same command when its Play [ ] button is pressed in the CD remote mode. You can also use this function to learn individual commands after entering a remote control code (page 86).
Point the remote controllers at each other, about 2 to 6 inches (515 cm) apart, and then press and hold the button whose command you want to learn until the Remote indicator ashes. If the command is learned successfully, the Remote indicator ashes twice.

Troubleshooting

If you have any trouble using the AV receiver, look for a solution in this section. If you cant resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer. On the TX-SR803/803E, if theres no sound from a DVD player connected to an HDMI IN, check the DVD players output settings, and be sure to select a supported audio format. Only the front speakers produce sound When the Stereo listening mode is selected, only the front speakers and subwoofer produce sound. In the Mono listening mode, only the front speakers output sound when the Output Sp setting is set to Front (page 68). Make sure the speakers are congured correctly (pages 70, 71). Only the center speaker produces sound If you use the Pro Logic IIx Movie or Pro Logic IIx Music listening mode with a mono source, such as an AM radio station or mono TV program, the sound is concentrated in the center speaker. In the Mono listening mode, only the center speaker outputs sound when the Output Sp setting is set to Center (page 68). Make sure the speakers are congured correctly (pages 70, 71). The surround speakers produce no sound When the Stereo or Mono listening mode is selected, the surround speakers produce no sound. Depending on the source and current listening mode, not much sound may be produced by the surround speakers. Try selecting another listening mode. Make sure the speakers are congured correctly (pages 70, 71). The center speaker produces no sound When the Stereo listening mode is selected, the center speaker produces no sound. In the Mono listening mode, only the front speakers output sound when the Output Sp setting is set to Front (page 68). Make sure the speakers are congured correctly (pages 70, 71). The surround back speakers produce no sound The surround back speakers are not used with all listening modes. Select another listening mode (page 60). Not much sound may be produced by the surround back speakers with some sources. Make sure the speakers are congured correctly (pages 70, 71). When the ZONE 2 SPEAKERS terminals are used, playback in the main room is reduced to 5.1-channels, and the surround back speakers produce no sound (page 82).

The AV receiver contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare situations, severe interference, noise from an external source, or static electricity may cause it to lockup. In the unlikely event that this happens, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait at least ve seconds, and then plug it back in again. Onkyo is not responsible for damages (such as CD rental fees) due to unsuccessful recordings caused by the units malfunction. Before you record important data, make sure that the material will be recorded correctly. To reset the AV receiver to its factory defaults, turn it on and, while holding down the [VIDEO 1] button, press the [STANDBY/ON] button. Clear will appear on the display and the AV receiver will enter Standby mode. For North American and Australian models, set the AV receiver to Standby before disconnecting the power cord from the wall outlet. For other models, set the AV receiver to Standby and the POWER switch to OFF before disconnect the power cord.
