DVD/HDD/VHS recorder Approx price: 650

Panasonic DMR-EX95

Plenty of functionality is crammed into this three way recorder - and fairly successfully too, reckons Martin Pipe
xpensive it may be, but Panasonics top-of-the-range DMR-EX95 is a bridge between the analogue and digital worlds. Nodding to yesteryears analogue formats is the VHS deck, while digital benets include 250GB of hard-disk (HDD) capacity, a Freeview tuner, SD card slot, HDMI and multiformat DVD recording. It goes without saying that with three types of
effectively jukeboxing your favourite TV programmes. To ensure they look their best, the EX95 has an upscaling (720p/1080i) HDMI output for compatible displays; theres also a interlaced/progressive component output. Including a digital-terrestrial tuner is a denite plus, but the absence of a CI slot or CAM denies you a TopUpTV upgrade. The SD card slot, meanwhile, will appeal to

looks and features

Compared to its DMR-EH80 predecessor, the front-panel is pleasantly uncluttered. Dominated by a multi-function uorescent display, the EH80s collection of controls seems to have disappeared. The only ones visible are DVD/VHS eject buttons, standby and a copywheel that engages dubbing between video media. Theres a good reason for this the rest are hidden. Half of the fascia lowers to reveal front-panel AV inputs (composite/S-video, stereo audio and i.Link), SD card slot, basic transport controls and channelchange buttons. The remote is necessary, though. You cant even select recording modes without it! That mammoth 250GB HDD has a maximum 443hrs capacity,
owners of compatible digitalcameras wishing to view their photos on a TV screen. Photos can be copied between SD cards and the HDD or DVD-RAM. Were pleased to see that the EX95 is completely multiformat. It supports DVD-RWs (compatible video-mode only in record), DVD+RWs, DVD-RAMs, DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs (both single and dual-layer). Four recording presets offer 1-8hrs per single-layer disc. Full editing is available when using DVDRAM or the HDD.You can partiallyerase and divide recordings, or create playlists for sequenced random-access playback and dubbing. Chasing playback is possible with HDD and DVD-RAM; indeed, you can start playing the current recording or an existing one. Dubbing is of course a strength you can move between VHS, HDD and DVD in any combination. First up is direct, invoked by the
aforementioned copy-wheel. This copies the current HDD title to DVD/VHS, all (self-recorded) DVD contents to VHS/HDD, or an entire VHS to HDD or DVD. Then theres advanced copy, which will for example let you create a list of recordings for transfer from HDD to DVD. Here, you can choose a lossless high-speed mode; changing the recording mode is a real-time alternative. Relevant here is a FR dubbing mode, which automatically optimises the recording bitrate so that your entire selection will t onto the DVD. As far as were concerned, the only y in the dubbing ointment is the VCR. It may have hi- sound, SP/ LP/EP modes and indexing facilities that (among other things) enable the EX95 to automatically split a dub into individual recordings but its VHS-only. Supporting the noticeablysuperior S-VHS would have added very little cost. The EX95 will play or dub S-VHS tapes, albeit with VHS quality. Those with S-VHS libraries will have to hook up their existing VCRs, which rather defeats the purpose of integration.

ease of use

Installing the EX95 is a doddle, thanks to awless auto set-up. Usage is also remarkably intuitive. Insert a blank disc, for example, and the machine will automatically initialise it if necessary. If you dub from the HDD or try to eject a potentiallycompatible disc, the recorder will ask you whether nalisation is required. Much hidden power lurks in the functions menu. Lesser-used options, such as recorder conguration and disc management (initialisation/ nalisation), are located within an others submenu. Scheduling digital recordings from the EPG activated by the remotes guide button is a cinch. You can call up details of a programme from the EPG with the i button before scheduling a DVD, HDD or VHS recording with the 32-event, 1-month timer. Also programmable manually or via VideoPlus, the timer makes provision for serials. But why no automatic (series-link) recording, based on EPG data? Note that red button interactivity is unavailable when a channel is being recorded from the EX95s own tuner. Subtitles can be permanently burnt into recordings. These are automatically-chaptered on DVDs, but not the HDD.
HDD or DVD recordings are itemised, in list or thumbnail form, by the disc navigator. Highlight the desired item, and pressing enter will initiate playback. What a pity theres no means of sorting through a potentially-huge HDD library! Better thought-out are the partialerase and divide functions, which are accessed from the navigator by pressing the sub-menu button. From here, titles and thumbnails can be quickly-changed too. The latter are retained when your DVD is nalised, with a choice of nine no-nonsense menu designs.

performance

Courtesy of the HDMI port, owners of projectors or at-panel displays will be able to escape from the pitfalls of analogue degradation. Digital recordings, from a digital source, fed to a digitally-driven display digitally! We hooked up the EX95 to our Hitachi PJ-TX100 projector via 720p HDMI. Off-air digital pictures astound, the only drawbacks being a slight (and correctable) softness, plus a series of dots at the top of the picture.

These dots disappear altogether on DVD/DVD recordings which, in keeping with Panasonics track record, are superb. The XP mode (1hr per singlelayer DVD) is best reserved for camcorders or rate-conversion DVD dubs; SP (2hrs) is just as good, as far as TV is concerned, and demonstrates no discernable difference from the broadcast. The machines LP mode (4hrs) is fullres, thereby retaining the original broadcasts impact. However, movement and ne detail can be spoilt by artefacting. For this reason, purists should stick to SP when dubbing from VHS. Both 6hrs and 8hrs variants of the DVD/HDD are acceptable if longer recording times take precedence over quality. VHS is disappointing in visual terms. Images, even in SP are rather , at and lack detail even by the poor standards of the format which are perhaps exacerbated by the EX95s vastly-superior digital recording. More positively, saturated colours are remarkably clean for VHS. In all cases, sound quality raises no cause for concern. Even VHS hi- is commendably free of breathing. Commercial DVDs look fantastic via HDMI, and thankfully little worse if youre stuck with component or RGB.
With DVD, HDD and VHS recording, this could be the ultimate recording machine

conclusion

Were pleased with the levels of integration and how Panasonic has made a complex and stronglyperforming product so easy to use. Only the VHS deck really lets the side down, with its lacklustre pictures. S-VHS devotees are instead steered towards the new HDD/DVD EX85 and a separate S-VHS. The combined total roughly equals the EX95s asking price!
