By Pam Wilson A FASCINATING DEMONSTRATION in the art of stained glass was given by our speaker Ellen Barsby. She showed us examples of glass ranging from clear to opaque with red being the most expensive. Cutting glass is easy we were told. Just take a diamond cutter, guide and press and there you have it - a butterfly wing. Mmmm , we were not convinced. She then proceeded to make the butterfly using copper foil and solder. Beautiful! For her second demonstration she showed us how she put together a stained glass window. Using thicker glass, lead and solder she assembled it on a board. We all held our breath when she picked up a hammer and nail. Whatever for? The nails hold the glass in place on the board until it is soldered. To conclude she showed us amazing examples from her portfolio showing her versatility in this art form.

THE MEMBERS OF Glenfield Institute were joined by ladies of the Astill Lodge Institute for an interesting talk by Karren Ashley the officer at Blaby Council responsible for the Recycling of Waste. A number of ladies were unaware that tinfoil and batteries are now regularly collected. She also informed the meeting that it is hoped that much more food packaging will be collectable in the near future. Each year the National Federation of Womens Institute campaign for a public affairs topic which on some occasions leads to the Federation lobbying the Government to take action. Institutes are invited to suggest topics and the national chosen resolution is discussed in the May meetings of each institute. This years resolution was:SOS for Honey Bees- Honey Bees play a vital role in the pollination of food crops and air environment. In view of concerns about the accelerating decline in the UK, this meeting urges the H M Government to increase funding for research into Bee Health. Since this resolution was nominated, the Government have pledged a total of 14,500,000 to address the development. For this reason, the members discussed in groups, the possibility of increasing this amount if necessary to address the problem. At the vote 20 ladies wanted the government to increase the allowance to INTERIOR/EXTERIOR meet the need, but 21 members felt that only the CONTACT PAUL FOR amount presently identified FREE WRITTEN should be used. EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD Charlotte Walsh, who was a passenger in a silver Ford Ka, was killed when it collided with a lamp post in Station Road Glenfield just in front of the Glenfield Social Club on Sunday 14th June at around 6pm. The driver of a white Renault Clio, who was arrested at the scene and taken to Beaumont Leys Police Station, was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Station Road from The Square to opposite Morningside Pharmacy was closed for over four hours. Emergency services attempted to free Charlotte, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary and later discharged. The night before the accident the teenager who was 18 on June 8, had been celebrating her birthday with family and friends at her home in Leicester Forest East. Days before she had passed her driving test. Charlottes Facebook Profile shows her as studying childcare at Coalvilles Stephenson College. Tributes from friends have inundated the site. Emma Speight wrote Just cant believe it,(RIP Charlotte youll never be forgotten). Friend Nicky Wales said Charlotte you are a beautiful intelligent young woman who made all your family very proud. Carol Brewards message says Sleep tight beautiful lady its a very sad day, heaven has got itself one stunning angel. Charlottes brother Sam posted a message on Facebook thanking all those who had posted tributes. Dick Chester, landlord of The Nags Head, told me Cars come speeding over the hill. There are no speed bumps. I was in my office when I heard a loud roaring noise followed by a crash. Several local residents who asked not to be named said that the small roundabout at the junction with the Glenfield Co-op Superstore is dangerous. The road to the Co-op at the side of the Glenfield Social Club allows traffic in both directions and there have been other crashes. One suggestion is that lights are needed at the junction.

This will enlarge the current Speech and Language provision at the school by the addition of ten Key Stage One children to the present 20 Key Stage Two pupils. The build will take place in the grounds of the current school in Stamford Street. It is anticipated that the school will continue to operate normally in its existing building while construction work is carried out. The scheme includes making sure every class has access to the outdoors so children can take their learning outside the classroom setting whenever the curriculum allows.

BRADGATE LIONS CLUB have had a very successful charity fund raising period, raising a total of 5122.00. They toured around areas of Groby, Ratby, Kirby Muxloe and Leicester Forest East, with their Santa Float, held bucket collections at the Glenfield Coop Superstore and at Sainsburys Superstore, Fosse Park with Santa in attendance, and held Prize draw raffles in 20 local pubs, restaurants and shops. Members of the Club also visited Glenfield General Hospital with Santa, and supported by Groby Church Choir, they entertained the patients with Christmas carols and gave small gifts and greeting cards as to many of the patients as was possible. Bradgate Lions Club would like to thank the very generous customers of the Glenfield Coop Superstore for their generous donations during their Santa collections held there over the weekend December 16-17th. The Club raised 745.00 during their time there and this together with funds raised elsewhere will be donated to Local Cancer Charities. Bradgate Lions are looking to recruit new members, who would enjoy helping with their charity fund raising efforts and partaking in social functions. Keeping a secret is usually either a temporary measure so as not to spoil a surprise, or an attempt to hide something we are really ashamed of. For Jesus however our charitable giving is to be such a spontaneous but hidden occurrence that even our left hand doesnt know what the right hand is doing. In Jesus day much of the charitable giving was done with trumpet fanfares to draw it to the attention of others that was the reward they wanted, and that is all they would get. But for Jesus followers, secrecy was to be part of the key to truly loving giving. That way God alone knows what we have done, and He will do everything justly and fairly and never leave us without His abundant blessings. By Stephen Wadsworth Eleven members of my family travelled to Brazil for the occasion when my second son, Paul Wadsworth married Ana Paula de Oliveira e Perreira Ramos (they seem to love long names!). The ceremony, held at the Anglican Cathedral in Sao Paulo, was conducted in both Portuguese and English. It was a wonderful occasion, a grand celebration of their love, and a reminder to us all of Gods gift and love for all us. Paul teaches Mathematics at St. Pauls School in Sao Paulo a job he has done for the past 4 and a half years.
