Glenfield Sewer Action Group
MEMBERS OF GSAG will be aware that there has been a government decision that private sewers will be adopted - this is likely to be in about 2010. During the work with regard to the private sewers on the Calverley Estate, the committee became aware that many residents had been overcharged by thousands of pounds in total, by Severn Trent, for surface water charges. Residents had given permission for this money to be used for the adoption of the foul sewers. However, this is no longer required. As part of the appeal to OFWAT for the adoption, OFWAT stated that Severn Trent Water should backdate some of the overcharging. Hence, Severn Trent Water is now in the process of contacting relevant residents about refunds back to 1990. These refunds are only being given to households who do not put their surface water (i.e. from roofs, drives etc) into the foul sewer. It appears that households seem to be having refunds from 500+ to 700+, depending on the rateable value of the property and depending on when they moved into the property. We do not know how accurate the site surveys were. If any household feels they should have a rebate and is not contacted they can contact Severn Trent: Elissa Dyke, Customer Relations Manager Severn Trent Water 156 -170 New Hall Street, Birmingham. B3 15E Tel (only a mobile - 07818 427587) Email - elissa.dyke@severntrent.co.uk If you know of anyone who has moved from the area, they can write to Severn Trent, as above, to make a claim, giving details of where they lived and the dates. From page 1 - Armed Robbery Stamford Street He put the bag over the counter demanding that the money in the tray be put into it. This was done and he told the other 2 assistants to pick up their trays to show that they were empty. There was one other person in the shop at the time. Mark Jarvis spokesman commented Staff safety is of paramount concern to us and we have taken measures to help those affected. People dont come to work and expect to be held up at gun point. We have reviewed security at all our branches and are now closed in an evening. Det Sgt Simon Preston, who is investigating the incident, said: we would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to contact us. Call police on 2222.

Swatlands Glenfield's Superb New Indian Restaurant

by Amy Russell

AT LAST! Glenfield has a stylish and contemporary Indian cuisine with exceptional quality of food, drink and service. Conveniently situated on Station Road, the restaurant is in walking distance for Glenfield residents, so not only can you indulge in the fabulous menu, but you can also choose from a selection of wines, beers, spirits etc, without the worry of whos going to drive home. Having dined at Swatlands Oadby several times, my expectations of the new restaurant were high from the beginning and I was confident that I could expect the same outstanding quality as I have always experienced. From the moment my family and I walked into the restaurant, the luxurious, modern interior throughout the bar and restaurant area created such a warm, relaxing atmosphere and we were met with a warm welcome from the friendly, pleasant staff, who really went out of their way to make our evening as enjoyable as possible. The impressive menu catered for a variety of tastes, including vegetarian dishes and the staff were more than happy to offer advice on the ingredients and warmth of the dishes, allowing us the space to decide and order at our own pace. We started with papadums with fresh cucumber yoghurt, mango chutney and a range of other pickles to whet our appetites for the following courses, which included a range of delicious appetisers, followed by main dishes including tawa, jalfezi and tikka massala, all served with rice and nan bread. To finish, we ere presented with refreshing icecream infused with mango, coconut and pistachio flavours. The food was perfectly presented and each course was as thoroughly enjoyable as the next. I cant wait to go back and try all of the other tempting dishes on the menu! With attentive staff using the finest ingredients to create contemporary and classic Indian influenced dishes, this is the perfect venue for both groups and couples looking for high quality Indian cuisine served in a stylish and relaxed setting.

A Mothers Gift
MATTHEW PIETRZYK, who lives with his brother and parents in, Glenfield, is 2 years old. At 5 weeks old he was diagnosed with Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome (CNS), which means that both of Matthews kidneys do not function. The condition is very unusual affecting only 1 baby in every 100,000. Unlike Jonah Lomu Matthew was born with CNS. He has had to have medication every day from when he was diagnosed to keep him alive. Only a kidney transplant will let Matthew lead some form of normal life. Last month he was admitted to hospital to have one kidney removed, which was done with keyhole surgery. In the New Year Matthew is due to have a live kidney transplant from his mother, Nicola, who gave up her work as a Fitness Instructor to be Matthews full time carer. Nikki said Matthew is under the care of Professor Watson at the Nottingham City Hospital and without the care of the Professor and his team I am sure that Matthew would not be with us today.

St. PETERS CHURCH GLENFIED
n Sunday November 11th we had two special services: the Remembrance Sunday Parade Service and a Sparkenhoe East Deanery service of Baptism and Confirmation. After three people, all from Glenfield, were baptized, all the others who were being confirmed were invited to dip their hand in the water in the font and make the sign of the cross on their forehead as a reminder of their own baptism. Bishop Colin prayed for God to strengthen each one of them N, God has called you by name and made you his own. Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit. Amen. The coincidence with Remembrance Sunday was a powerful reminder Christian faith is lived out in a real world. Will you strive for all that makes for peace? We will. Will you seek to heal the wounds of war? We will. Will you work for a just future for all humanity? We will. I invited people to think of all the ways they might complete the sentence God wants Glenfield to be a place where. including every aspect of our communitys life. Remembering is fruitful when it transforms how we look at the present and future. John Sharpe

The Scattered Scruffs!

WHAT AN INTRIGUING title for a talk! Were we in for a tale about missing pedigree dogs? No the tale was much more interesting and true! The Scattered Homes were places where children were sent when their parents couldn't look after them. In this case, Hazel Jacques. with her brothers and sisters, were taken from their parents when, in 1940, they got T. B. Hazel was the only family member not to get tuberculosis, in those days a dread disease. She told her own story of her separation from parents and siblings. Put into the Scattered Home in Leicester she experienced many ups and downs, including the slaps because of her "Cheek!" ,which led to her trying to run away. All this was set against a background of wartime and Anderson Shelters. which brought back memories for many of us. We listened to her story and were glad we had not the misfortune to be ,like Hazel. a child in care!

Chris Brown Marketing Limited have recently taken up the entire first floor of Linford House, in the Square - the ground floor of which is better known for accommodating the village Post Office, KR Hair and Edmonds & Slatter Optometrists. The company, co-owned by husband and wife team Chris & Carolyn Brown, is engaged in the design, sourcing, importation and distribution of ladies and men's fashion accessories, throughout the UK with the main customers being High Street fashion retailers such as New Look,Jane Norman and Bay Trading. Products include hats, gloves scarves belts, jewellery, handbags and socks as well as certain types of fashionable knitwear. Many of the items are designed in-house by the company's designer Charlotte Bourner and then sourced from several locations in both the south and north of China as well as India by Chris and Carolyn who between them have visited the Far East in excess of 70 times over the past 10 years and have as such, built up some excellent relationships with suppliers in those parts. In tandem with the move to Glenfield comes the opening of the company's first outlet for sales to the general public. As all creations require the making of many samples before production commences, many are accumulated and are often far more valuable than the items that are ultimately sold by the various store groups. For the first time these will be available to the public from the 10th December from the Linford House premises. All items will be at cost price or below and would make ideal Christmas gifts.
Why not go along and have a look for yourselves and pick up a bargain at the same time.

Bomb Hero Funeral

by Nichola Pell THE FUNERAL of bomb disposal expert Craig Appleby was held in Sussex. He died on October 11, just a day after his 36th birthday, while clearing cluster bombs dropped by Israeli forces during last year's war with Hezbollah. One of the devices exploded, and he suffered fatal injuries. Craig, a soldier with the Royal Engineers for more than 17 years, came from Leicestershire and attended Glenfield County Primary School, Anstey Martin High School, and Birstall Community College, before joining the Army. After leaving the Army he worked as an instructor in bomb disposal. Tony Withers, the scout group leader of 42nd Leicester which Craig attended in the mid-1980s. said: "Craig was a smashing lad who stood out a bit. I knew him between the ages of 11 and 16, and he was really enthusiastic and cheerful. "He was always willing, and wanted to be involved in everything. The last time I saw him was when he came back from a tour of duty in Kuwait, after the first Gulf War. He was a quite a changed guy. He'd seen thing most of us hope never to see. I know he was happy in the Army. We had our cubs writing to him for a long time. Craig had been in Lebanon for a month, working for ArmorGroup Mine Action, a British company, clearing landmines and unexploded bombs. He was working on a clearance programme funded by the United Arab Emirates in support of the UN's Mine Action Co-ordination Centre South Lebanon, based in Tyre. He wrote on the Friends Reunited website that his approach to life was to: "Live a long and prosperous life and enjoy each and every day. After all, it's not a dress rehearsal." ArmorGroup spokesman said: "Craig was a shining example of those who work in this highly dangerous field, without whom local communities are unable to rebuild their lives safely following armed conflict More than 150 of Craigs friends attended his funeral. A service was held in Essex before a military burial in Saffron Walden. Craigs father David said Craig lost a friend in Bosnia and wanted to be buried in the same cemetery.

Jewish Folk Song Tipped Shaun the Sheep heads To Be Christmas Number 1 for the Xmas charts with baa-rilliant single
SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD Lauren Roses recording of Hava Nagila set
to take on might of X Factor When pretty pop singer Lauren Rose recorded a song as a Hanukkah present for her Grandfather she had no idea that bookmakers would soon be offering odds on her beating X Factor to the Christmas number 1 spot. William Hill are currently quoting 66/1 for the petite singer to take the Christmas top spot with her recording of Hava Nagila arguably the most recognisable Jewish folk song.

Lifes A Treat

SHAUN AND HIS farmyard friends Bitzer, the dog, The Naughty Pigs, The Flock, Timmy, Shirley and, of course, The Farmer are starring in a fabulous animated video to be released on December 10th created by Aardman, creators of Wallace & Gromit, Creature Comforts and Shaun the Sheep Lifes A Treat when ewe are with Shaun the Sheep and now the resourceful and charismatic fella is bringing his fun and frolics to the charts with the release of his debut single named appropriately Lifes A Treat. Shaun the Sheep made his TV debut on Christmas Eve 1995 in the Oscar winning short film, Wallace and Gromits A Close Shave. Ten years later he went on to star in his own television show on CBBC and now, loved by millions around the world, he is turning his hoof to the Christmas charts with the release of his theme tune. Vic Reeves, who sings Shauns theme, has encouraged Shaun in his musical mission I wish Shaun all the best with his song and I think he has a very good chance of beating the X Factor winner. But the TV star, who himself topped the charts with Dizzy has some wise words for his wooly friend I have warned Shaun that if he gets to the top of the charts he needs to keep his hooves on the ground Lifes A Treat will be available as an enhanced CD as well as via digital outlets: See the website www.shaunthesheep.com

May I take this opportunity to wish all of our residents a Happy Christmas. Lee Breckon, Chairman

Congratulations

Peter Chapman, Glenfield's PCSO, has been given an APEX award. The award is for Achieving Performance EXcellence and was presented by Chief Constable Matt Baggott at the Leicestershire Constabulary Headquarters on 4 October 2007. When making the award CC Matt Baggott described Peter's work within the community. He had helped Glenfield's new Beat Officer, Mike Cawley, to achieve a smooth transition into Glenfield and had worked closely, often in his own time, with the Parish Council to set up the police office on Ellis Park. Peter's work with Glenwatch was also highlighted. When asked about the award Peter thanked all those that had supported him and in particular the Parish Council and PC Mike Cawley. Peter added that he would continue to stress the team working whenever the APEX award is mentioned and that he was "only doing his job". The Parish Council congratulates Peter on his award. It is understood that Peter was also put forward as PCSO of the Year.
The helmet camera will allow the officers to record on the spot information in real time. As one contributor said, We should be buying two of these cameras. So if you are a local business and would like to contribute please contact the Parish Council. Further information will be in our next issue.

And a Police Warning

As the cold and frosty mornings start beware if you are leaving you car running to demist windows. Whilst your windows must be clear for safe driving leaving your car with its keys in and the engine running is an easy target for car thieves. If you do this whilst your car is on the highway you are committing an offence and, in the event of theft, the odds are extremely high that your insurance will be invalidated, whether you are on the highway or on your own driveway.
