With the handset

If an alarm tone sounds when you press TALK ; move towards the main unit, or place the handset on the main unit. Then try again. If the TALK button on the handset is pressed while using the main unit, the call will be switched to the handset and the main unit is disconnected. The dialing mode is set to TONE as the default setting. If you cannot dial, change to PULSE with feature #13 (p. 83).
To redial the last number

Remote fax activation You can also receive a fax from an extension phone. If you answer a call with an extension phone and hear the fax calling tone, press 9 (pre-selected fax activation code) to receive a fax (p. 64).
When the fax machine detects a call matching the selected Distinctive Ring pattern: The fax machine will activate the fax function. When the fax machine detects other ring patterns: The fax machine will operate based on the AUTO ANSWER setting.
When receiving calls: You have to answer all calls manually. To receive a fax document, press FAX START for each fax call.

Ring count in the TAD/FAX mode
You can choose from 1, 2, 3, 4, TOLL SAVER and RINGER OFF. TOLL SAVER: When you call the unit from a remote location, the number of rings will tell you if there are any new voice messages. If the unit answers on the second ring, there is at least one new recorded message. If the unit answers on the fourth ring, there are no new recorded messages. To save the toll charges for the call, hang up immediately when you hear the third ring. The third ring indicates that there are no new recorded messages. RINGER OFF: The unit will answer without ringing. q If you subscribe to a Caller ID service, set to 2 or more rings. q You can also select the setting with programming feature #06 (p. 83).

Greeting

Pre-recorded greeting messages!
The unit has pre-recorded greeting messages. Depending on the situation, one of the following messages will be played to the caller. For your own greeting message, see page 70. s When the unit is ready to receive voice and fax calls: Hello! We are unable to answer right now. To send a fax, please start transmission. To leave a voice message, please speak after the beep. Thank you.

Recording your own greeting messages!
You can record your own greeting messages for the TAD/FAX and TEL/FAX modes. When receiving a call, your own greeting message will be played instead of the pre-recorded message. The recording time will be limited to 16 seconds. We recommend you record your message within 12 seconds to make it easier to receive faxes. Suggested messages This is (your name, business and/or telephone number). We are unable to answer right now. To send a fax, start transmission. To leave a message, speak after the beep. Thank you. This is (your name, business and/or telephone number). We are unable to answer right now. Please try again later. Thank you.

Programming by entering the program code number directly
You can select a feature by directly entering the program code (# and 2-digit number) instead of using JOG DIAL. 1. Press MENU. 2. Press and the 2-digit code number. 3. Follow steps 3 to 6 above.

Code Display & Feature AUTO1JOURNAL #22 To print the journal report automatically for fax communications OVERSEAS1MODE If you have difficulty sending an overseas fax, activate this feature before starting transmission. This feature makes sending documents easier as the transmission speed is slowed down. Settings ON OFF NEXT FAX: For the next attempted fax transmission. After transmission, the unit will return to the previous setting. ERROR: When previous fax transmission fails and you redial the same number. q This feature is not available for broadcast transmission. q The calling charge may be higher. To send a document: 1. Insert the document. 2. Follow steps 13 above. 3. Rotate JOG DIAL to select ON. 4. Press SET. 5. Enter the fax number. 6. Press SET. 7. Enter the transmission start time. Press to select AM or PM. 8. Press SET. 9. Press MENU. q To cancel after programming, press STOP then SET. How the unit operates ON: The unit will print the journal report automatically after every 30 new fax communications (p. 52).

The covers are open. Close them.

The ink film is empty. Replace the ink film with a new one (p. 100, 101). q The ink film is not installed. Install it (p. 100, 101). q The ink film is slack. Tighten it (see step 6 on page 101).

1CHECK1DOCUMENT

The document is not fed into the unit properly. Reinsert the document. If misfeeding occurs frequently, clean the document feeder rollers (p. 103) and try again. If the problem remains, adjust the feeder pressure (p. 99). Memory (telephone numbers, parameters, etc.) has been erased. Re-program.

11CHECK1PAPER
The recording paper is not installed or the unit has run out of paper. Install paper and press SET to clear the message. q The recording paper is not fed into the unit properly. Reinstall paper (p. 13) and press SET to clear the message. q The recording paper has jammed near the recording paper entrance. Clear the jammed paper (p. 98) and press SET to clear the message. Do not install folded or heavily curled paper.

FAX1IN1MEMORY

The unit has a document in memory. See the other displayed message instructions to print out the document.
Memory is full of received documents due to a lack of recording paper or a recording paper jam etc. Install paper or clear the jammed paper. q When performing memory transmission, the document being stored exceeds the memory capacity of the unit. Transmit the entire document manually.

JOG-DIAL1FULL

There is no space to store new stations in the JOG DIAL directory. Erase unnecessary stations (p. 38). When making a copy, the document being stored exceeds the memory capacity of the unit. Press STOP to clear the message. Divide the document and try again.

MEMORY1FULL

Display message MESSAGE1FULL
Cause & Remedy There is no room left in memory to record a voice message. Erase unnecessary messages (p. 73). There is something wrong with the modem circuit. Contact our service personnel. The other partys fax machine is busy or has run out of recording paper. Try again. A recording paper jam occurred. Clear the jammed paper (p. 98). The unit is checking that there is no slack on the ink film. Wait for a while. The other partys fax machine is busy or has run out of recording paper. Try again. The document is jammed. Remove the jammed document (p. 99). Attempted to transmit a document longer than 600 mm (2358" ). Press STOP to remove the document. Divide the document into two or more sheets and try again. A transmission error occurred. Try again. The unit is too hot. Let the unit cool down.

To stop printing, press STOP. After printing, the printed item will be displayed.

Press MENU.
