Important information

General L Use only the AC adaptor supplied with this product, noted on page 2. L Do not connect the AC adaptor to any AC outlet other than a standard 220240 V AC outlet. L This product is unable to make calls when: the portable handset battery(ies) need recharging or have failed. there is a power failure. the key lock feature is turned on. the call bar feature is turned on (only phone numbers stored in the unit as emergency numbers can be called). L Do not open the base unit, charger, or handset other than to replace the battery(ies). L Consult the manufacturer of any personal medical devices, such as pacemakers or hearing aids, to determine if they are adequately shielded from external RF (radio frequency) energy. (The product operates in the frequency range of 1.88 GHz to 1.90 GHz, and the RF transmission power is 250 mW (max.).) Do not use the product in health care facilities if any regulations posted in the area instruct you not to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy. L Care should be taken that objects do not fall onto, and liquids are not spilled into, the product. Do not subject this product to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration or shock. L Only the supplied handset can be used with the base unit. No other handsets can be registered or used. Environment L Do not use this product near water.

L This product should be kept away from heat sources such as radiators, cookers, etc. It should also not be placed in rooms where the temperature is less than 5 C or greater than 40 C. Warning: L To prevent the risk of electrical shock, do not expose this product to rain or any other type of moisture. L Unplug this product from power outlets if it emits smoke, an abnormal smell, or makes unusual noise. These conditions can cause fire or electric shock. Confirm that smoke has stopped emitting and contact an authorised service centre. L Do not spill liquids (detergents, cleansers, etc.) onto the telephone line cord plug, or allow it to become wet at all. This may cause a fire. If the telephone line cord plug becomes wet, immediately pull it from the telephone wall jack, and do not use. L Do not place or use this product near automatically controlled devices such as automatic doors and fire alarms. Radio waves emitted from this product may cause such devices to malfunction resulting in an accident. L Regularly remove any dust, etc. from the AC adaptor/power plug by pulling it from the power outlet, then wiping with a dry cloth. Accumulated dust may cause an insulation defect from moisture, etc. resulting in a fire. L Do not damage the power cord/plug. This may cause a short circuit, electric shock, and/or fire. L Do not touch the plug with wet hands. L The AC adaptor is used as the main disconnect device. Ensure that the AC outlet is installed near the product and is easily accessible. L Charge the battery(ies) provided with or identified for use with this product only in accordance with the instructions and limitations specified in this manual. L Only use a compatible base unit (or charger) to charge the battery(ies). Do not tamper with the base unit (or charger). Failure to follow these instructions may cause the battery(ies) to swell or explode. General notices L This equipment will be inoperable when mains power fails. L When a failure occurs which results in the internal parts becoming accessible, disconnect the power supply cord immediately and return this unit to an authorised service centre. L Disconnect the telecom connection before disconnecting the power connection prior to relocating the equipment, and reconnect the power first. L No 111 or other calls can be made from this device during a mains power failure. L This equipment shall not be set to make automatic calls to the Telecom 111 Emergency Service. L Not all telephones will respond to incoming ringing when connected to the extension socket. Battery installation

Important: L Use the supplied rechargeable batteries (Part No. HHR-55AAAB). L When installing the batteries: Wipe the battery ends (S, T) with a dry cloth. Avoid touching the battery ends (S, T) or the unit contacts. Confirm correct polarities (S, T). L If the handset does not automatically turn on after installing batteries, press {ih} for about 1 second, or place the handset on the base unit or charger. Insert the batteries negative (T) end first. Close the handset cover.

Turning the power on/off

Power on Press {ih} for about 1 second. Power off Press {ih} for about 2 seconds.

Note: L It is normal for batteries not to reach full capacity at the initial charge. Maximum battery performance is reached after a few complete cycles of charge/discharge (use). L Actual battery performance depends on a combination of how often the handset is in use and how often it is not in use (standby). L Even after the handset is fully charged, the handset can be left on the base unit or charger without any ill effect on the batteries. L The battery level may not be displayed correctly after you replace the batteries. In this case, place the handset on the base unit or charger and let it charge for at least 7 hours.

A pause is sometimes required when making calls using a PBX or long distance service. Pressing {R} 1 time creates a 3 second pause. Press {R} repeatedly to create longer pauses.

Recall/flash

{R} allows you to use the special features of your host PBX such as transferring an extension call, or accessing optional telephone services. Note: L To change the recall/flash time, see page 16.

Phonebook

For call waiting or Call Waiting Caller ID service users
To use call waiting, you must first subscribe to the call waiting service of your service provider/telephone company. This feature allows you to receive calls while you are already talking on the phone. If you receive a call while on the phone, you will hear a call waiting tone. If you subscribe to both Caller ID and Call Waiting with Caller ID services, the 2nd callers information is displayed after you hear the call waiting tone on the handset. To switch between calls, press {R}. Note: L Please contact your service provider/telephone company for details and availability of this service in your area.
Adding entries to the phonebook
The phonebook allows you to make calls without having to dial manually. You can add 50 names and phone numbers.
Press {R} to answer the 2nd call.
{ih} Note: L When caller information is received and it matches a phone number stored in the units phonebook, the stored name is displayed. Using Caller ID service

Important: L This unit is Caller ID compatible. To use Caller ID features, you must subscribe to a Caller ID service. Contact your service provider/telephone company for details. L For all local and national incoming calls, your display will show the area code (e.g. 09 for Auckland) or the cellular prefix (e.g. 0274 for Telecom Cellular) followed by the callers telephone number. An Auckland callers number will be displayed as 09XXXXXXX. The seven Xs represent the seven digits of the callers telephone number. A caller from a 6-digit Telecom Cellular number will be displayed as 0274XXXXXX. For incoming international calls, your display may only show 0000. For business users on a Centrex line, your display will show Centrex extension numbers in the shorter extension number format used within your company. L The Caller ID information will not be presented on incoming fax calls if Telecom FaxAbility is used. Using toll services from Telecom or another company Your telephone company may charge you for a local call if the number dialled has the area code prefix included. If this is unacceptable, dial only the 7-digit local number. Do not dial the {0} prefix or the area code.

*1 Only the emergency number setting is not reset. *2 If you forget your PIN, contact your nearest Panasonic service centre. *3 The recall/flash time depends on your telephone exchange or host PBX. Contact your PBX supplier if necessary. *4 If you change the PIN, please write down your new PIN as the unit will not reveal it to you again. *5 Call restriction feature restricts the handset from dialling certain phone numbers. You can assign up to 10 phone numbers (memory locations 09) to be restricted. *6 Emergency number feature determines which phone numbers may be dialled while the call bar feature is turned on. A total of 4 emergency numbers (memory locations 14) can be stored. The default setting for emergency numbers are stored in the first 3 memory locations. It is recommended that you do not overwrite these numbers.

Caller ID features

Display indications L When new calls have been received, the display shows the number of new calls. Example: 4 new calls have been received.
Editing: The callers telephone number, which is sent to your telephone from your local telephone exchange, includes 0 and an area code prefix. Voice mail service

To receive Call Minder or Message Mailbox messages, please note the following: Call Minder and Message Mailbox are automatic answering services offered by your service provider/telephone company. After you subscribe to this service, your service provider/telephone companys Voice Mail system will answer calls for you when you are unavailable to answer the phone or when your line is busy. Messages are recorded by your service provider/ telephone company, not your telephone. Your service provider/telephone company uses a Stutter dial tone (special dial tone) to indicate that you have new messages. When you have new messages, 0 will be displayed on the handset. Please contact your service provider/telephone company for details of this service. Important: L If 0 still remains on the display even after you have listened to new messages, turn it off by pressing {<} for 1 second.
*1 Shown when this call has already been viewed or answered. Press {C} to call back. L If the unit cannot receive caller information, the following is displayed: OUT OF AREA: The caller dials from an area which does not provide a Caller ID service. PRIVATE: The caller requests not to send caller information.

Multi-unit Operation

Intercom
Available for: KX-TG1312/KX-TG1313 Intercom calls can be made between handsets. Example: When handset 1 calls handset Handset 1: {INT} i Press {2} (desired handset number).
Transferring calls, conference calls
Available for: KX-TG1312/KX-TG1313 Outside calls can be transferred between 2 handsets. 2 handsets can have a conference call with an outside party. Example: When handset 1 transfers a call to handset Handset 1: During an outside call, press {INT}. i Press {2} (desired handset number). L The outside call is put on hold. L If there is no answer, press {INT} to return to the outside call.
Handset 2: {C} When you finish talking, press {ih}.
Handset 2: Press {C} to answer the page. L Handset 2 can talk with handset 1. Handset 1: To complete the call transfer, press {ih}. To establish a conference call, press {3}.
Transferring a call without speaking to the other handset user
During an outside call, press {INT}. i Enter the desired handset number. L k flashes to indicate the outside call is on hold.
{ih} L The outside call rings at the other handset. Note: L If the other handset user does not answer the call within 30 seconds, the call rings at your handset again.

Useful Information

Troubleshooting
If you still have difficulties after following the instructions in this section, disconnect the base units AC adaptor and turn off the handset, then reconnect the base units AC adaptor and turn on the handset. Problem w is flashing. Cause/solution L The handset is too far from the base unit. Move closer. L The base units AC adaptor is not connected. Check the connections (page 5). L You are using the handset or base unit in an area with high electrical interference. Re-position the base unit and use the handset away from sources of interference. L The handset registration is cancelled. Register the handset to the base unit (page 22).
Problem I cannot make or receive calls.
Cause/solution L The base units AC adaptor or telephone line cord is not connected. Check the connections. L If you are using a BT double adaptor to connect the unit, remove the adaptor and connect the unit to the phone wall socket directly. If the unit operates properly, check or replace the adaptor. L The call bar feature is turned on. Turn it off (page 15). L You dialled a call restricted number (page 16). L The key lock feature is turned on. Turn it off (page 11). L The unit is not designed to be used with rotary/pulse dialling services. L The ringer volume is turned off. Adjust the ringer volume (page 14). L The handset is not turned on. Turn the power on (page 7). L Make sure that the batteries are installed correctly (page 7). L Fully charge the batteries (page 7). L Change the display language (page 10). L The handset is too far from the base unit. Move closer and try again.

The unit does not ring. The handset display is blank. The handset will not turn on. I have changed the display language to a language I cannot read. A busy tone is heard when {C} is pressed.

I fully charged the batteries, but 7 still flashes. I fully charged the batteries, but the operating time seems to be shorter.

Liquid damage Problem Liquid or other form of moisture has entered the handset/base unit. Cause/solution L Disconnect the AC adaptor and telephone line cord from the base unit. Remove the batteries from the handset and leave to dry for at least 3 days. After the handset/base unit are completely dry, reconnect the AC adaptor and telephone line cord. Insert the batteries and charge fully before use. If the unit does not work properly, contact your nearest Panasonic service centre. L If you forget your PIN, contact your nearest Panasonic service centre. L When the handset has been registered successfully, w stops flashing. L If w is still flashing, start again from step 1.
