Mini powerhouse

anasonics Lumix DMC-FX520, current 10 Megapixel flagship of their compact range, is certainly a camera for the serious photographer. This is the only compact, of which I am aware, that offers Manual exposure control, aperture control, shutter speed control, face detection, processing fine-tuning options and a touch interface LCD. Sleek and fairly compact (Approximately 95 x 57 x 23 mm ), solidly built thus comparatively heavy (175 g with battery and card) this camera sports a five times zoom Leica 4.mm DC Vario-Elmarit lens, (35 mm equivalent being mm) and a 3-inch touch interface LCD plus stylus for those with large fingers. The touch screen makes choosing required selections without going through the menu a pleasure, and the screen size, clarity and brightness make viewing, even in fairly bright light, easy.The High Angle option even makes it a breeze to hold the camera high overhead and view the screen from below. The FX520 has seven basic shooting modes: iA (Intelligent Auto, a setting for those who require minimum hassle photography. The camera selects the most appropriate settings for subject and conditions, automatically selecting scene detection, stabiliser, intelligent ISO, face detection, intelligent exposure and digital red eye correction.), Program mode, Aperture priority, Shutter priority, Manual, Scene (permits selection of any of 22 settings for specific scenes), and Motion Picture. The FX520 has all the bells and whistles one would require from a compact, and then some.Too much in fact to deal with in the space allocated to this review.

ISO sensitivity ranges from 100 to 1600 and 1600 to 6400 in High Sensivity mode, shutter speeds from 60 seconds to 1/2000 seconds with a selection of six white balance settings and three metering modes: Multiple, Centre Weighted or Spot.Apertures range from f2.8 to f8. Picture proportions may be varied, the aspects available being 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9.Video proportions are 4:3 or 16:9.

Recording media are approximately 50 MB of built-in memory / SD or SDHC memory cards or MultiMedia card (still pictures only). The camera is well-designed and comfortable to use, with the built-in flash positioned where it is unlikely to be obscured by a finger. The buttons on the back were precise in action but the little toggle joystick was pernickety when attempting to select menu/set. In use, metering was not easily fooled, pleasing exposures being achieved time after time. Focus, even in dingy conditions was good and better than many cameras I have used. Colour tended to warm, being vibrant with pleasing saturation. So much so in fact that I found it almost unnecessary to tweak saturation in downloaded pictures. Lag (the time lapse between pressing the shutter release and the
picture being taken), was negligible. Noise became evident at ISO 400, was still fairly acceptable at ISO 800 and then, as expected, was high at ISO 1600. The heart of the camera is the Vario-Elmarit lens.The f2.8 4.4 mm (25 mm) setting opens creative doors unavailable on most other compact cameras, which in the main can only achieve an equivalent 28 mm setting with a supplementary lens.This is excellent for picture taking in cramped interiors and creating dramatic views, striking skyscapes and adding impact. The macro setting produced impressively crisp results, especially when used with the stabiliser when hand-held. As is to be expected from any lens from the Leica stable, this one performs well with only slight barrel distortion at the extreme

wide end. Maximum aperture at the tele setting is a little slow but the quality across the range is beautifully crisp. For those who tend to shake a little, the stabiliser, when employed, is a boon. The built-in flash has six settings plus off. In use it was a tad puny but fine for party groups, baby pictures and the like. The FX520 is also equipped with a multi exposure facility.This can run at 2.5 frames per sec (Normal) or two frames per sec on the Unlimited setting. At High Speed burst, six frames per second may be achieved. It has a limited video function with monaural microphone and speaker. In summation, Panasonics FX520 is a little powerhouse with a multiplicity of options, and equally importantly, it can deliver the goods.
