Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 Compact Digital Camera Review
A perfect compact digicam for mainstream photographers
Although DSLRs are the more "glamorous" digital cameras available out there (at least from the point of view of most photographers), the truth of the matter is that compact digicams, designed specifically for mainstream photographers, represent the bulk of sales for a big number of manufacturers. After all, there are a lot more people out there looking for a small, affordable and ultra-portable camera that can take good-quality photos and shoot videos for later uploading to YouTube rather than aspiring photographers in search of a device that will allow them to unleash the artist within. Given this situation, it's no wonder that pretty much every major name in the field of digital photography is also actively involved in the compact digital camera market, with touchscreen models representing the latest trend in this segment. This is exactly the subject of our review, namely the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 digital camera, which was announced back in early 2009, and since then has really managed to make a pretty good name for itself, given the photography-related features it can provide, but also to some other details you'll be able to come across in our review. While we won't go into too many details in this introductory section, we will mention the fact that we're talking about a 12.1-megapixel compact shooter, which comes equipped with a complete and comprehensive set of features (yeah, including the already way too common Face Recognition feature, but also a very well-developed iA system), as well as what we might call a dual control system. We call it dual because, although the main control system of the DMC-FX550 is represented by its 3-inch touchscreen, the device also packs quite a few classic control options (plainly speaking, buttons), placed on the right hand side and the top part. Also, the camera offers a wide range of options most mainstream photographers will love, including a host of preset shooting modes that will allow even inexperienced users to get the most of pretty much any situation, as well as 720p video recording for all those YouTube lovers out there. But I guess this is enough information for the time being, so let's move on to the review itself, starting with the design. [[BREAK=Aesthetics and Design]] Overall design features First and foremost, it's very important to mention the fact that users who decide to go for the DMC-FX550 are offered two options, as far as the colors are concerned, namely either silver or black. As you can plainly see from the photos, the model we tested was the all-black version, which, if you ask me, is a lot more elegant than the silver one, no to mention dirt resistant. In any case, the color combo of the black version is also very well chosen, the FX550 featuring some very attractive metallic inserts that match its black body in a very interesting manner. Also, the quality of the materials the digital camera is built from (including here the

quality of the finishing) is top-notch, the camera looking very elegant, despite the more classic form factor. Actually, this is something we'll also have to point out, namely that, as far as the overall design is concerned, the Panasonic DMC-FX550 has somewhat of a "classic" feel to it, compared to other similar devices existing on the market, with less curves and more straight, strong lines, as well as a host of manual controls very few touchscreen-equipped digicams still feature. Plus, the fact that it's a bit "overweight" will create a feeling of "solidness" and "resilience" in spite of the fact that this is not rated as a "tough" or "rugged" camera. Size and portability Despite being a tad larger than some of its competitors at 94.9 x 57.1 x 21.9 mm (3.74 x 2.25 x 0.86 in) and weighing around 167 grams (including the battery and an SD card), the Panasonic DMC-FX550 can be carried around very easily. For example, one can carry it even in his/her pocket (if the pocket is a bit larger, of course), not to mention a backpack or a purse. Plus, the camera is equipped with a small wrist strap, which, quite obviously, comes in handy for carrying the gadget around and making sure one doesn't accidentally drop it (something that might ultimately prove fatal for the device, in spite of its sturdy construction). Button and slot placement As mentioned above, one of the features that really make the DMC-FX550 stand out from the crowd is the fact that, although featuring a 3-inch touchscreen display providing fast and easy access to pretty much all of the features and settings, the digicam also features a fairly comprehensive set of analog control buttons, placed on its right and top sides. Practically, if you're not really used to touchscreens, don't worry, because you'll be able to easily access all of the camera's settings and features equally easy by using the control buttons. So, without further ado, let's see what we can find on the FX550, starting with its top side. There, besides the On/Off switch, we can also pinpoint the famous zoom wheel found on oh so many digital cameras out there, which encircles the shutter button. Plus, there's an E.Zoom button, whose purpose is to zoom to the full telephoto focal length at a much faster speed than normal (and then back to wide-angle with a second push). And since we're "on top" of the FX550, we'll also mention the fact that this is where the camera's built-in speakers and microphone are located, as visible from the photo as well. Now, moving to the right side. Here, we can find a large assortment of control buttons, all of which, however, can be very easily pressed by using just the user's thumb. First (from the top), we can find a switch that changes between Playback (or Review) mode and the shooting mode. Next, there's a mode button for choosing one of the available shooting modes (something that we'll detail a bit later in our review), as well as a display button, which enables photographers to choose exactly what information will be displayed on the screen during the shooting or reviewing processes. Underneath the display button, we encounter a very familiar group of four control buttons,

Page 2 Copyright (c) 2001-2011 Softpedia. All rights reserved. Softpedia and Softpedia logo are registered trademarks of SoftNews NET SRL.
surrounding a central, larger button for accessing the menu. The top button is used for quickly adjusting the exposure compensation, while the left button is used for accessing the various available flash settings. The right button is used for selecting the self timer options, while the bottom one bears the universal symbol for macro shooting (the small flower). The last control button found on the DMC-FX550 is located under the aforementioned five-button group and is simply labeled Q.Menu. However, this button is extremely important, since it can be used both for accessing the Quick Menu when shooting or for deleting photos. Now that we're done talking about the control buttons, let's take a look at the various slots this thing incorporates. In fact, there aren't that many to start with, since we're only talking about those used for inserting the memory card (SDHC cards supported) and the battery, both of which are located on the camera's bottom side, underneath a protective cap. We might also include in this chapter the tripod mounting socket, found exactly to the right of the aforementioned battery/SDHC card protective cap, whose purpose is, quite obviously, self-explanatory. Connectivity options Probably in order to follow the digital camera's overall design trend, Panasonic decided to keep the connectivity side of the DMC-FX550 as simple as possible, and managed to do so by only integrating two interfaces, namely a USB one (quite obviously, used for connecting to a computer and downloading the photos stored within the camera, but also for hooking up the device to a TV set via a suitable component cable) and a mini HDMI interface, whose purpose is also pretty obvious, namely that of playing back videos directly on one's HDTV, at top-notch quality. Both of these interfaces are to be found on the camera's right side, behind a metallic protective cap, underneath the small groove used for attaching the wrist strap. Display The display of the Panasonic DMC-FX550 represents one of the camera's most important assets. First of all, it's large, featuring a 3-inch diagonal size, as well as a 230.000-dot resolution, which enables users to see quite clearly what they are shooting, as well as review photos/videos they have taken. We tested the display even in strong sunlight, and the results were pretty impressive, given the fact that one will have very little problems when taking photos and reviewing them even in such conditions, typically known as the most adverse. In fact, overall, the display of the FX550 is very good, while its sensitivity levels are also impressive, since we didn't encounter any serious problems while touching away on this thing. [[BREAK=Tech Facts]] Now that we've seen what the DMC-FX550 has to offer from the design point of view, it's time to move to something a little different, namely its tech specs. In this chapter, we'll detail just how the digital camera behaves in a couple of real-life conditions, and what one should expect from it in several situations. However, we won't go into deep technical details (which most people really don't are about), but rather those features a mainstream photographer might be interested in. Setup and general operation One of the first things anyone does after purchasing a digital camera and taking it out of the package is attaching the wrist strap, in order to prevent accidents from occurring. In the case of the FX550 (and unlike other cameras), doing so is fairly quick and easy. Now, as far as the setup process and operation are concerned, users can choose to either go the "classic" path and employ the analog controls or the touchscreen at its full potential.

Page 6 Copyright (c) 2001-2011 Softpedia. All rights reserved. Softpedia and Softpedia logo are registered trademarks of SoftNews NET SRL.
Of course, either variants will work, albeit the touchscreen is a much more modern and intuitive one. Going through the menus of the FX550 is actually a pretty easy task, since there aren't that many of them to start with, and most of the options are arranged in a pretty logical order. One of the things I really did not appreciate about this camera's menus, however, was the fact that they don't really sport an attractive design. I mean sure, nobody should expect a compact digital camera's menus to be visually attractive, but, as far as the looks of the menus is concerned, Panasonic's engineers should have taken some cues from some of their competitors (Sony's the first name that comes to mind, of course). On the other hand, unlike Sony cameras, whose menus are a bit. stuffy, let's say, and more difficult to work with, handling the Lumix DMC-FX550 is a very fast and easy task, which even complete beginners to digital photography will be able to carry out. Photo shooting and image quality The first thing one has to do after switching on the camera is to choose the photo shooting mode that best suits his/her needs, and here, they'll be able to choose among Intelligent AUTO, MySCN, SCN, Motion Picture, Program mode, AperturePriority mode, Shutter Priority mode and Manual mode. Of course, the shooting modes can also be easily changed while shooting, either via the touchscreen or, in a much simpler and easier manner, via the Mode button we've mentioned in a previous chapter of this review. [IMG=61][IMG=62][IMG=63][IMG=64] The intelligent auto (iA) mode is most likely the one many users will employ, at least at first, before starting to experiment more with the camera and discovering its more advanced features. The iA behaves quite well and produces good quality photos, regardless of the lighting conditions (with some limits, of course), overall setting, etc. One interesting detail worth mentioning about the iA is the fact that it's the only shooting mode to provide automatic backlighting compensation, which, as most photographers know only too well, can really come in handy during nighttime or indoor shooting. Another issue worth talking about here is the IE/AF feature, which allows photographers to choose the exact focus point of the scene (and consequently, the necessary exposure) by simply tapping on the screen. This feature is available through several of the shooting modes, and although it's a bit trickier than simply letting the camera take complete control, it does provide some pretty interesting results in terms of image quality. [IMG=65][IMG=66][IMG=67] We won't go into further details regarding the various scene modes available, simply because there are way too many of them, probably designed in order to fit as many real-life situations as possible. What's mention-worthy, however, is the fact that, similar to the Olympus E-620 DSLR we reviewed a while back, the Panasonic camera also provides a couple of in-camera effects, such as Pinhole or Film Grain, as well as the always useful self-portrait (just think bathroom mirrors, teenagers and Hi5, MySpace or Facebook). All of these customized scene modes are available either through the "My SCN Mode" (which saves the user's preferred scene mode) or the "SCN Scene Mode"options. Next in line comes the Program AE shooting mode, which increases the level of customization. Hence, photographers can adjust the white balance and metering modes, as well as choose intelligent exposure and face recognition mode. This face recognition mode is indeed quite an interesting issue, since it allows users to register a particular face with the camera for future recognition. Moreover, contrast, sharpness, saturation and the degree of noise reduction can be adjusted in the Program AE mode.

Page 7 Copyright (c) 2001-2011 Softpedia. All rights reserved. Softpedia and Softpedia logo are registered trademarks of SoftNews NET SRL.
The other available modes are Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual Exposure, which allow users to adjust the aperture and shutter speed manually, via on-screen sliders. [IMG=68][IMG=69][IMG=70][IMG=71] Given this camera's positioning on the market, it was to be expected for the FX550 to feature an advanced optical image stabilization system, which helps in preventing the blurring of images either when shaking the camera or when shooting photos in low light/at high zoom values. There are actually three different stabilization settings (Auto/Mode 1/Mode 2), but it's very likely that most people using the FX550 will simply set the OIS system to auto and forget about it. Also, the camera offers a fairly comprehensive ISO range, between ISO 80 and ISO 1600, while featuring a High-Sensitivity mode, which sends the value flying up to ISO 6400. Plus, one of the things we'll have to mention here is that users can easily add audio comments to their photos, which really comes in handy when they want to remember something specific regarding a place they visited, for example. [IMG=72][IMG=73][IMG=74] Now that we've gone through some of the most important photo shooting-related features (although, be advised, these are only a few settings and features, so, if you decide to get this camera, you'll have a lot of exploring to do), let's talk a bit about the quality of the photos. Remembering that this is a compact camera designed for mainstream photographers, we can really say that the Lumix DMC-FX550 behaves absolutely beautifully, being able to create clear, crisp images, with good color reproduction in almost all situations. Exposure, in auto mode as well, is quite even, but, as expected, some issues appear in terms of lighting. Hence, the noise is barely noticeable until going as high as ISO 400, but even at that value, we're only talking about noise in large zooms, and really shadowy areas. Of course, it only goes down from here, with the images at ISO 1600 being. well, simply bad, to put it plainly. [IMG=75][IMG=76][IMG=77] The camera supports the night shooting modes pretty well, although don't expect to see some great, crisp and crystal clear details for these night photos. Video shooting and quality Video shooting has been implemented in video cameras since. like forever, and recent compact cameras even provide Full HD video recording. However, that's not the case with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550, whose maximum supported resolution is of 1280x720 pixels (or 720p, if you prefer), at 30 fps, the videos being, strange enough, saved in MOV format in the camera's memory (not exactly sure why they haven't gone with the AVCHD or AVI formats).

While most of you might believe that this is not enough, the truth of the matter is that the videos shot with Panasonic's compact camcorder are quite good and smooth, especially those taken outside, in good lighting conditions, with good contrast and crisp details, as well as great audio. Of course, one shouldn't expect the same level of quality as that provided by Panasonic's camcorders, but the DMC-FX550 does manage to get the job done, especially if you're just
Page 8 Copyright (c) 2001-2011 Softpedia. All rights reserved. Softpedia and Softpedia logo are registered trademarks of SoftNews NET SRL.
looking for something that will record videos that you'll be able to then share with others via one of the many video sharing services available out there. Photo and video playback The DMC-FX550 has quite a few useful playback options. For example, users can easily zoom in the photos they've just taken (up to 16x), view photo in normal mode, but also go for the "dual play" option, which displays two images on the screen in a sequence, allowing users to actually compare them.
Of course, there's also a slideshow feature, which can be refined to a pretty high degree, even allowing users to add some music during the "presentation" (albeit the music isn't exactly the greatest you've heard). Plus, several indexing methods are available, probably the most impressive being the possibility of viewing available clips in some sort of calendar-like index. Another interesting feature, one rarely found in other digital cameras, is the possibility of writing texts on the image using a virtual keyboard. Plus, some in-camera editing options are also available, including here the tilting and leveling of images. Since the camera is also capable of recording video clips, a basic video player has been implemented in the software, although you shouldn't really expect anything particularly impressive from it, apart from its standard function. [[BREAK=Conclusions]] The Good The Lumix DMC-FX550 represents a pleasant surprise in the field of compact digital cameras, since it's able to provide a very large number of features and customization options, despite looking just like an ordinary "point-and-shooter." Hence, photographers, even beginners, won't have any problems taking good quality photos with this device, especially since the Intelligent Auto function can take care of business in a very OK manner (albeit choosing the right scene mode is highly recommended, especially since there are so many options). Moreover, it is able to record videos at 720p resolution, allows users to attach a voice comment to photos and provides extensive playback options, as well as some in-camera editing features, albeit nothing really fancy. The Bad To tell you the truth, we haven't been able to find anything really "bad" to say about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550, apart from the usual shortcomings offered by most compact cameras, such as noise at higher ISO values and in low lighting. Yes, some might find the design a little "edgy," while the relative small amount of internal memory is also somewhat of a minus. Other minuses include the relatively poorly finished software menus, as well as the lack of 1080p recording capabilities, which has become somewhat of a must in most modern camcorders.

Overall Impressions [IMG=78]After going through the main features the Lumix DMC-FX550 has to provide, we can say that this all-rounder is a great tool to have around for those people who want to be able to take quick, good quality photos wherever they might go and then share them with friends online. Moreover, it also provides quite an extensive range of customization features for the available shooting options, thus having an even greater value on the long run (especially for those photographers curious enough to fiddle with its various settings).
