"We needed to record a laboratory experiment for possible inclusion in a distance learning package. The duration of the experiment was just over 12 min and would be compressed to a QuickTime file"
1. Objective It was important that this particular lab experiment should be recorded and made available to distance learning students and home students via a CD. The experiment was a measure of the oxygen equivalent of the organic content of a sample that is susceptible to oxidation by Potassium Dichromate in Sulphuric Acid under reflux. 2. Planning the content / gathering the content The experiment only takes about 12min provided some pre-prepared samples are available. The experiment is conducted on a lab bench with a minimal of equipment. Extreme care is needed during the experiment as many of the chemicals are highly corrosive and can cause serious burns. For health and Safety reasons we were required to wear protective clothing during the experiment. 3. Choosing equipment / borrowing equipment The equipment used was a Panasonic NV DS11 camcorder, a tripod and the cameras built in mike. 4. Shooting the movie The lab proved a good place to shoot, there was enough ambient light so as not to worry about deep shadows. There was enough space to set up the camera and tripod and see all the action. But like all the best laid plans there was a hitch. Builders were doing work in a nearby room which involved drilling and hammering a camera mans nightmare. This prevented using the sound form the cameras mike so it was decided to capture what we could, transcribe afterwards and do a voiceover. 5. Converting / downloading to PC Capturing was relatively easy, straight into Pinnacles Studio 7 editing software. 6. Choosing or using editing software
A fair amount of editing was necessary even though the whole experiment took only 12 minutes. It was evident there were many scenes of relative inaction while waiting for something to happen so it was decided to cut out sections and glue the rest with simple fade in transitions. A sample of royalty free music provided the background to the opening title. The hardest element of the editing was transcribing the lab technicians voice and creating a script for the voice over. Once that was done, Studio 7 provided a simple way to add voiceover. 7. Compressing / saving the movie into a file format The finished sequence was just over 6min and this was compressed to a QuickTime file from a whooping 4GB to a shade over 300MB, easily published on a CD. 8. Integrating movie into other teaching resources The video, published on a CD was made available to the distance learning module. 9. Delivery integrated movies into teaching The movie will be shown to colleagues and students other than those on the distance learning modules as an example of alternative learning and teaching methods. 10. Aftercare and maintenance Some funding has been allocated for the development of a streaming server so sequence will be used to trial the streaming development.
