Stylish but not to good... This VCR looks awesome. The black looks really stylish. The features are alright to. It is made by Panasonic - well sort of... In response to the first review which states that this VCR is not made by Panasonic.

Setting the Remote Control to Operate Your TV
You can operate the TVs of the manufacturers listed below with the remote control after setting it. This setting procedure allows you to operate the TVs of some manufacturers using the supplied remote control. Preparation Set [VCR/TV] switch (22) to [TV]. Operations 1 Find the manufacturer number of your TV while referring to the following table. 2 While holding down [TV-ON/OFF] (1) on the remote control, use [Numeric] (2) to enter the manufacturer number. This completes the settings for the TV manufacturer. Be sure to enter the number in two digits. Example: 1 ) To confirm the correct settings were made, check whether the TV can be operated properly. When a manufacturer has multipled numbers in the following table, try entering other numbers if the TV operations cannot be performed properly, and then select the optimal number. Notes: If you are using a Panasonic TV, this setting has already been made, and so you do not need to perform the above setting procedure. However, this remote control may not work with some Panasonic TVs. Some TV models cannot be operated using this remote control (including all TVs non-remote compatible). To Make Various Indicators Appear On Screen Display

1 Audio Output Mode Indicators At each press of [AUDIO] (18), the selected sound mode is indicated with Left (L) and Right (R). Stereo: Both the Left (L) and Right (R) Indicators appear. Playback
Preparations Confirm that the VCR is on. Confirm that the TV is on and the VCR viewing channel is selected. Insert a recorded video cassette. Set [VCR/TV] switch (22) to [VCR]. For Normal Playback: Press [Play] (25).
Notes: JET SEARCH, cue, review or slow playback will be automatically cancelled after 10 minutes, and still playback after 5 minutes. During playback function other than normal playback, horizontal noise bars may appear in the picture, the colour of the picture may be unstable, or the picture may be otherwise distorted. When you play back a tape recorded in the LP mode, the picture may be in black and white. When you play back a tape recorded in the EP mode, the picture and the sound may be unstable. However, these are not malfunctions.
For Cue or Review Playback: During playback, tap [Fast Forward] (24) or [Rewind] (8). To return to normal playback, press [Play] (25). If you press and hold down [Fast Forward] (24) or [Rewind] (8), cue or review playback continues for as long as you keep the button pressed, and operation returns to normal playback when the button is released. For High speed Cue or Review Playback (JET SEARCH): During playback, tap [Fast Forward] (24) or [Rewind] (8) twice. For Still Playback: During playback, press [Pause/Slow] (28). To return to normal playback, press [Play] (25) or [Pause/Slow] (28). For Slow Playback: During playback, keep [Pause/Slow] (28) pressed for 2 seconds or more. To return to normal playback, press [Play] (25). Fast-forwarding or Rewinding the Tape: Press [Fast Forward] (24) or [Rewind] (8) in the stop mode. To stop fast-forwarding or rewinding, press [Stop] (9). To Obtain a Higher Speed Rewind (Jet Rewind): Press [JET REW] (26). The [J. REW] indication appears on the TV screen and VCR displays channel position (except when the remaining tape time indication appears). Depending on a cassette or an operating condition, the rewind speed may change somewhat. The tape counter is reset to [0:00.00] when the tape is rewound to the beginning. To Stop Playback Press [Stop] (9).

To Play back S-VHS Cassette Tape (SQPB=S-VHS Quasi Playback)
It is also possible to play back tapes recorded in the S-VHS system. Some picture noise may occur depending on the type of tape used. It is not possible to fully obtain the high resolution that SVHS is capable of. It is not possible to record in the S-VHS system with this VCR.
To Play Back a Recorded Part Repeatedly
Press [REPEAT] (34). The [R] indication appears on the VCR display. A recorded part on the tape must be at least 15 minutes long. When recording over the same location on a tape, it may not function correctly. To Cancel the Repeat Playback Mode: Press [Stop] (9).

NTSC Playback

Tapes recorded in the NTSC system can be played back with this VCR via a PAL system TV. Select [NTSC PB SELECT] from the On Screen Display according to the colour TV system of the TV. (See page 11.) NTSC 3.58 recording requires [NTSC INPUT SELECT] to be in the AUTO or 3.58 position (see page 11), however if [NTSC INPUT SELECT] is in this position when recording a NTSC 3.58 signal, no colour is available for the PAL TV. Once the recording is completed, you then need to select [on PAL TV] to view the recording in colour on PAL TV. On some TVs, the playback picture may roll up or down. If your TV has V-HOLD control or equivalent adjustment function, use it to adjust the picture. Note for only NTSC Playback on PAL system TV This function is designed to allow only the playback of tapes recorded by NTSC signals on a PAL system TV. The NTSC signal is not completely converted to a PAL signal. For this reason, images play back by this function cannot be recorded correctly on other VCRs.

To Playback in the Desired Picture Quality (Picture Mode)
This function reproduces optimum playback picture from various kind of recorded tapes and contents. Press [PICTURE MODE] (29) and select the corresponding Picture Mode as follows. Example:

Recording

Preparations Confirm that the VCR is on. Confirm that the TV is on and the VCR viewing channel is selected. Set [VCR/TV] switch (22) to [VCR]. Operations 1 Insert a video cassette with an intact erasure prevention tab. If it has already been inserted, press [VCR-ON/OFF] (1) to turn the VCR on. 2 Select the TV station using [Channel] (32). It is also possible to select by pressing [Numeric] (2). 3 Press [REC] (27) ([REC/OTR] (41)) to start recording. 4 Press [Stop] (9) to stop recording.
Pressing [PICTURE MODE] (29) once makes the On Screen Display appears. After that, pressing it repeatedly changes the indication in the following order: STANDARD (Initial Setting) # DYNAMIC # SOFT # CARTOON # STANDARD (Initial Setting)

Convenient Automatic Functions
VCR Auto Power On When you insert a video cassette, the VCR switches on automatically. Auto Playback Start When you insert a video cassette with a broken erasure prevention tab, playback starts automatically without press [Play] (25). VCR-off Playback When the VCR is off, the inserted cassette can be played back by pressing [Play] (25). Auto Rewind When the tape reaches the end, the VCR automatically rewinds it to the beginning. This function does not work during timer recording, OTR recording and fast-forwarding. Automatic Switching Off and Ejection When the VCR is switched off, the inserted cassette can be ejected simply by pressing [EJECT] (40). The VCR will eject the cassette and automatically turn itself off again.
To Select the Desired Tape Speed
Press [SPEED] (20) before recording. SP provides standard recording time, optimum picture and sound quality. LP provides double recording time with slightly reduced picture and sound quality. EP provides triple recording time with slightly reduced picture and sound quality. When you play back a tape recorded in the EP mode, the monaural sound may be unstable. When you start the recording in the EP mode, [EP] indication on the VCR display flashes for about 8 seconds. EP mode means Super Long Play (SLP).

To Pause Recording

Press [Pause/Slow] (28) during recording. Press it again to continue recording.
To Eject Video Cassette Using the Remote Control
Keep pressing [Stop] (9) for at least 3 seconds.
To View One TV Programme while Recording Another TV Programme
After pressing [REC] (27) to start recording, select on your TV the programme position of the TV programme that you want to view.
To Prevent Accidental Erasure of Recorded Contents
Break out the erasure prevention tab after recording. If you insert a video cassette with a broken out erasure prevention tab and press [REC] (27) ([REC/OTR] (41)), the indication flashes on the VCR display to indicate that recording is not possible. In this case, cover the tab hole with two layers of adhesive tape.

To Display the Approximate Remaining Tape Time

The remaining tape time can be displayed in the VCR display. 1 Select [TAPE SELECT] from the On Screen Display and select the corresponding video cassette tape length. See page 11. 2 Press [DISPLAY] (16) repeatedly until the Remaining Tape Time appears on the VCR display. Clock # Counter # Remaining Tape Time # Clock
Important Note for the NICAM System When NV-HV60GN is switched on, the tuner will automatically switch to a NICAM broadcast, if NICAM is being transmitted. At this time the NICAM signal is transmitted on stereo channels only, since the M1 and M2 formats are not yet available. Even if the sound track is MONO, the stereo indicator will appear.
To Record the Present Date and Time (OSD Recording) on the same screen as the picture
This function allows you to record the present date and time on the same screen as the picture being recorded.
For certain cassettes, the remaining tape time may not be displayed correctly.
Operations 1 Set [OSD REC] to [ON]. (See page 11.) 2 Press [REC] (27) ([REC/OTR] (41)). 3 Press [Stop] (9) to stop recording.

To reset the tape counter
Press [RESET] (17) to reset the tape counter (elapsed time) to [0:00.00]. The tape counter is automatically reset to [0:00.00] when a video cassette is inserted. The tape counter is reset to [0:00.00] when you operate the Jet Rewind function and the tape is rewound to the beginning. Notes: When playing back a cassette recorded in the LP or EP mode, some pictures and sound distortion may occur. However, this is not a malfunction. The recording pause mode will be automatically cancelled after 5 minutes and return to the stop mode. The tape recorded in the EP mode on this VCR cannot be played back on the other VCR without EP mode function. On the other VCR (even with EP mode function), when you play back the tape recorded in the EP mode, the picture and the sound may be distorted. However, this is not a malfunction. When a video cassette with a broken off erasure prevention tab is inserted, the indication will flash to indicate that recording is not possible even if [REC] (27) ([REC/OTR] (41)) is pressed.
Note: This function is also activated for OTR recording and Timer recording.
To Select the Recording Duration and Perform Timer Recording (OTR Recording)
OTR means One-Touch Recording and is called this way, because you can start recording and select the recording duration by repeatedly pressing a single button. This is very convenient, for example when you want to start recording immediately but need to go out or want to go to bed. After the selected recording duration has elapsed, recording stops and the VCR automatically switches off. To Perform an OTR Recording: 1 Display the VCR picture on the TV. 2 Insert a video cassette with an intact erasure prevention tab. 3 Press [Channel] (32) to select the programme position on which the TV programme to be recorded will be broadcast. 4 Press [REC/OTR] (41) to start recording. 5 Press [REC/OTR] (41) repeatedly to select the desired recording duration. Every time you press this button, the recording duration indicated in the VCR display changes in the following order. For example, if you select [30], the VCR records a programme from that moment for 30 minutes. Counter display (normal recording mode) # 30 (min.) # 60 (min.) # 90 (min.) # 120 (min.) # 180 (min.) # 240 (min.) # Counter display (normal recording mode) To Stop the OTR Recording Before the End: Press [Stop] (9). Notes: The OTR function works during normal recording. When the tape reaches its end during OTR recording, the VCR will turn itself off.

To Delete all of a Cassettes Contents (Tape Refresh Function)
You can delete a cassette contents (the picture, the sound and the Jet Navigator data) all at once. Operations 1 Be sure to set [JET NAVIGATOR] to [ON] when you want to delete all contents of a cassette that is recorded while setting [JET NAVIGATOR] to [ON]. Be sure to set [JET NAVIGATOR] to [OFF] when you want to delete all contents of a cassette that is recorded while setting [JET NAVIGATOR] to [OFF] or is recorded on another VCR. (See page 11.) 2 Insert a cassette that you want to delete the cassette contents. 3 Press [TAPE REFRESH] (38) for 5 seconds or more to put the VCR in tape refresh standby mode.
Use the L and R connectors for operations in the normal (monaural) mode.

The tape is rewound to the beginning, and it is fast-forwarded with the tape refresh function. When the tape reaches the end, the VCR automatically rewinds it to the beginning. Note: When a video cassette with a broken off erasure prevention tab is inserted, this function is not activated.

Timer Recording

4-Key Programming

Up to 16 timer programmes, including weekly and daily programmes, can be recorded up to one month in advance by setting the timer. For guidance on doing 4-Key Programming, refer to procedure of timer programming (Easy Programming Guide) on OSD on page 17. Preparations Confirm that the VCR is on. Confirm that the TV is on and the VCR viewing channel is selected. Insert a video cassette with an intact erasure prevention tab. Check that the clock is set to the correct time. If it has not been set, refer to page 9. Set [VCR/TV] switch (22) to [VCR]. Example (In case of [JET NAVIGATOR] is set to [ON].): Programme position (channel); Date; Starting time; Ending time; Tape speed; Category; (Present date; 16 October) Operations 1 Press [PROG/CHECK] (14) to display the menu for timer programme on the TV screen. 2 Press [DATE] (12) to set the date on which the TV programme will be broadcast. 6 Press [SPEED] (20) to set the desired tape speed. SP provides standard recording time, optimum picture and sound quality. LP provides double recording time with slightly reduced picture and sound quality. EP provides triple recording time with slightly reduced picture and sound quality. Regarding the [A] indication, refer to page 17. When you play back a tape recorded in the EP mode, the monaural sound may be unstable.

The next item will flash after about 2 seconds. 3 Press [CH] (11) to select the programme position of the desired TV station. Every time you select the programme position, the background changes. 4 Press [ON] (10) to set the starting time. When it is kept pressed, the indication changes in 30 minute intervals. 5 Press [OFF] (21) to set the ending time.
9 Press [TIMER (REC)] (19) to switch the VCR over to the timer recording standby mode. When [JET NAVIGATOR] is set to [ON] (see page 11), the [PROGRAMME IS COMPLETE. REMAINING PROGRAMME 49.]* message appears. When [JET NAVIGATOR] is set to [OFF] (see page 11), the [PROGRAMME IS COMPLETE.]* message appears. The VCR will be set to the timer recording standby mode after about 1 minute if [TIMER (REC)] (19) is not pressed. * These messages will not appear if timer recording is started immediately after [TIMER (REC)] (19) is pressed.

To Suspend the Timer Recording Standby Mode
When you want to use the VCR for playback, normal recording or some other operation before the programmed timer recording perform, you can temporarily suspend the timer recording standby mode by pressing the [TIMER (REC)] (19) so that the [ ] indication on the VCR display disappears. However, after you have finished using the VCR, be sure to reactivate the timer recording standby mode by pressing the [TIMER (REC)] (19) again otherwise the programmed timer recording will not be performed.
Timer Recording from an External Signal Source
If timer recording is performed by a unit connected to the Audio/Video input sockets, select the A1 or A2 indicator in step 3 of 4-Key Programming for the programme position.

Programming a Timer Recording of a TV Programme Until its End (Tape Speed Auto Change Function)

Note: If timer recording is not completed (due to insufficient tape or cancellation by the user), the programmed timer recording data will be cancelled from the memory by 4 A.M two days later. However, if the timer recording function is activated at that time, the programmed timer recording data will not be cancelled. After you cancel the programmed timer recording data, the current tape speed is displayed during the stop mode.

Search Functions

Jet Navigator

This VCR can display a list of the recorded programmes on the inserted video cassette on the TV screen. You can then select the desired programme, and the VCR will quickly locate its beginning and start playback. Conditions for correct operation of the Jet Navigator function: The tape length of the inserted cassette must be set correctly. (See page 11.) The VCR must not be in the timer recording standby mode. A programme at least 15 minutes must be recorded on the tape. Preparations Display the VCR picture on the TV. Be sure to set [JET NAVIGATOR] to [ON] (see page 11) and perform recording. Operations JET NAVIGATOR 1 Press [NAVI] (4) to display the DATE CH ON CATEGORY /0 :MU S IC Jet Navigator list. /:S P OR T /:/A :Up to 14 programme data that /9 :E D U C A /0 :have been recorded are /20 :SELECT : NAVI, END : MENU displayed on the Jet Navigator list. (7 programme data for each page) When more than 15 programs have been recorded in one cassette, the programme data are deleted from the first one. When pressing [NAVI] (4) during playback, playback stops and the Jet Navigator list appears. 2 Press [NAVI] (4) several times to select the programme that you want to locate and play back. After more than 3 seconds, the VCR starts to search for the beginning of the selected programme and playback starts automatically. Every time you press [NAVI] (4), JET NAVIGATOR the programme shifts above. Crystal View Control

]. The crystal view control function ensures that you always obtain the optimum picture quality so that you get the best picture automatically.
[The picture is noisy or is not in colour. Horizontal bars or lines run down the screen.] Tracking is not correct. #Adjust the tracking. See the right column. The TV has not been tuned to the VCR. #Tune the TV to the VCR. See page 6. The video heads are clogged or worn. #Consult Panasonic Customer Care Centre for advice on 132600. (NV-HV60GL only) #Consult your dealer for further advice. The playback picture is distorted when using an E300 type video cassette that was recorded in the LP or EP mode. #We recommend that you use video cassettes other than type E300. Adjusting the Playback Picture
Under normal conditions, the VCR automatically adjusts the playback picture for optimum quality. However, in some cases it may be necessary to adjust it manually. If the Picture Contains Noise Bars and It Is Not Clear to See (Tracking adjustment): If noise bars appear during normal playback, slow playback or still playback, follow the operations below. During normal or slow playback, press [TRACKING/V-LOCK] (32) _ or ` until the bars noise disappear. If the noise bars appear during still playback, switch the VCR over to the slow playback mode and then adjust the tracking as explained above.

TV screen

[The indication flashes whenever recording is attempted.] The erasure prevention tab on the video cassette has been broken off. #Use a tape with an intact erasure prevention tab, or cover the tab hole with adhesive tape, if the original recording is no longer required. [The picture is recorded with noise or a blank screen.] The aerial or aerial cable is defective. #Check the aerial connection to the VCR. See page 5. #Check your normal TV picture. If there is no picture, check your aerial. The VCR is not correctly tuned. #Retune the VCR. See pages 7-8. A1 or A2 has been selected. #Select the required TV programme. [Timer recording cannot be performed.] The clock or calendar has been incorrectly set. #Check the clock and calendar. Set them to the present time. (Note that this is a 24-hour clock.) See page 9. The recording starting or ending time setting is incorrect. #Set the recording starting and ending time correctly. The VCR has not been set for timer recording. #Press [TIMER (REC)] (19) after programming for timer recording. Playback picture containing noise bars
To Return to Auto Tracking: Press both [TRACKING/V-LOCK] (32) _ and ` simultaneously. If the Still Picture Scrolls Up or Down (V-Lock Adjustment): If the still picture scrolls up or down, perform the following operation. During still playback, keep [TRACKING/V-LOCK] (32) _ or ` pressed until the picture stops scrolling. Precautions: With certain TV models and tapes, it may not be possible to adjust the tracking. If you play back a cassette that was recorded on another VCR, the picture quality may be inferior and it may be necessary to adjust the tracking. Also, on some TVs, the picture may scroll up and down in the special playback functions. However, these are not malfunctions.

Dirt on the video heads

If the video heads get dirty, pictures will not be recorded or played back clearly. (See the following conditions.)

[The remote control does not operate correctly.] The remote control transmitter beam is not reaching the VCR. #Ensure that the remote control is being pointed at the VCR and that the transmitter beam is not obstructed. The distance is too far. #Use the remote control within 7 m of the VCR. The batteries are exhausted. #Replace the batteries. See the precautions for replacement on page 2. The batteries are incorrectly fitted with (+/-) reversed. #Fit the batteries correctly as shown on page 2.
If this happens, insert and eject a cassette 5-10 times successively to remove the dirt from the video heads. If the problem still persists after performing above, contact a service personnel to request assistance. Head cleaning by service agents is not covered by warranty.

1. Introduction

1.1 Watch TVPurpose
The purpose of this document is to explain setup, performance and common usage of the Tevion DVR TSD-DR40HD Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The DVR was purchased from Aldi, Brandon Park Shopping Centre, Glen Waverley, Victoria, on the 20th March 2008 for inclusion in our home entertainment system.

1.4 The Tevion TSD-DR40HD Digital Video Recorder (DVR)
The DVR is capable of processing and recording various video signals into high quality DVD disc and HDD, such as the input signals of TV stations, ordinary disc players and Digital Video cameras.
In addition, the machine has all the functions of an ordinary DVD player. It can record on hard disk and DVD and it can copy from hard disk to DVD.

1.5 Some Technical Terms

TERM BRC Button MEA8I8G Beomaster Remote Control (s). Small one in bedroom and large one in lounge room. A button on a Remote Control (shown in Bold Face, e.g. HDD) or displayed on screen.
Chapter Each title can contain one or more Chapters or Tracks and Track DRC DVD DVR Remote Control Digital Versatile Disk. A removable storage device for video and data files. We make a distinction between: DVD-R or DVD+R, disks that can be recorded once only. DVD-RW or DVD+RW, disks that are rewritable. Recordings on rewritable DVD disks can be done in several sessions (prior to disk finalisation). DVDs recorded can always be played back on this device, but to make a recorded DVD playable on a computer and other DVD players a process of Disk Finalisation needs to be performed. DVB DVR Digital Video Broadcast. A button on the DRC. Digital Video Recorder. A machine that can record video using digital (rather than analogue) technology. This term is perhaps not used as much as PVR, but is probably the better term. Hard Disk Drive. A storage device for large amounts of data. The Tevion DVR has an HDD capacity of 400Gb, A key on a Remote Control (shown in Bold Face, e.g. HDD) Personal Video Recorder. A machine that can record video not just for you but for anyone else who is around.

1.6 Front Panel

The Front Panel of the DVR allows basic operation without the use of the Remote Control. On the left is a door leading to some further connection sockets:

1.7 Rear Panel

The Rear Panel of the DVR contains a number of sockets allowing connection to other television and hi-fi equipment.

1.8 Power/Mode Indicator

A large circular Power Indicator is located at the right corner on the front of the unit. When the unit is plugged in and powered on, the power indicator will be lit in one of three different colours, depending on the current mode of operation: Red Blue Purple Unit is in stand by mode, meaning the unit is currently not in use. Press STA8D BY/O8 button to place it into playback mode. Unit is in playback mode, meaning the unit is ready for normal operation, such as watching a TV program or playing a DVD. Unit is in recording mode, meaning the unit is currently recording a program on HDD or DVD. The unit cannot be used for any other purpose (except watching the program being recorded) until the current recording task has been completed.

On DRC press SETUP button to exit Setup menu.

3.3 Deleting a TV Channel from List
The complete list of digital TV channels could be reduced to a list of useful channels by deleting those deemed unnecessary. However, because all TV stations are currently experimenting and preparing for the full-scale introduction of Australian digital TV in 2010 it is probably best to just leave the list as it comes. However, if you wish to go get down to just the list of useful channels, do the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. On SRC, press POWER button and wait 10 seconds for TV to turn on. On SRC press SOURCE button and select PVR/STB. On DRC press STA8DBY/O8 button to turn on the DVR and wait until No disc message is shown. On DRC press DVB button. On DRC press SETUP button to enter Setup menus and display the Setup Menu Recording. On DRC press Up Arrow button to display the Setup Menu DVB. On DRC press Right Arrow button to actually enter Setup Menu DVB. On DRC press SELECT to enter Digital Channel Management menu and display the current list of available programs and channels. On DRC press SELECT to enter Digital Channel Management menu. Use CH+ or CH- button to highlight a channel to be deleted. Press GREE8 button to mark the highlighted channel for deletion. Repeat from Step 10 until all channels deemed unnecessary have been marked for deletion, leaving only the useful ones. Press SELECT button twice to confirm deletion and save the updated list.

3.4 Reassigning Program Numbers for TV Channels in List
The TV channels found by scanning are assigned consecutive program numbers (0001-0021). Enables a given recording to be divided into time periods or Chapters of equal length, so you can skip a certain amount of time forwards or backwards using the 8EXT or PREV buttons on the DRC. This would probably not be relevant for recordings that already have a natural division into Chapters, such as classical music videos; for such a recording the feature should be turned Off. 5 Options: 5/10(default)/20/30/Off Set to 5 mins

Record Quality

Enables the quality of a recording to be reduced so as to take up less space on the recording media. Choosing the highest quality setting (HQ) would only be of interest for classical music videos, but for ordinary videos the lowest quality setting (SLP) may not be quite good enough (EP will probably be an adequate choice). Set to EP = Extended Play

Auto Scan Channel
Enables the initiation of a search for analogue TV channels. Press SELECT button to start the SCAN. This makes the unit perform a scan for Analogue TV programs. Each program found is identified by a program number (Pxxx) and a channel number (CHzzz). The following Australian Analogue programs and channel numbers were found by this scan: P003 CH002 (should be renamed ABC01) P009 CH007 P011 CH009 P013 CH010 P025 CH028 (should be renamed SBS28) P028 CH031 Only do this once. If you do it again any editing done via Modify Channel will be lost.

Modify Channel

Enables the editing of channel attributes, e.g. channel name. Press SELECT button to begin the EDIT. This makes it possible to change channel attributes to other values than those found by the auto scan.

4.7 Setup Menu Time Shifting and Hard Disk Management
This menu deals with settings to do with time shifting and hard disk management.
Time Shift Buffer Mode Hard Disk Info Space Management
Enables selection of time-shift mode (Refresh or Preserve) Press SELECT to choose between REFRESH or PRESERVE Enables display of information about hard disk size. Press SELECT to display information. Enables selection of hard disk space management (manual or automatic) if or when hard disk space is exhausted. Manual space management means that if no more space is available on the hard disk a message will be displayed The hard disk drive is full. Please erase some programs to perform further recording. Automatic space management means that if no more space is available on the hard disk will delete oldest recording too make more space available. Set to Manual

Empty Hard Disk

Enables the hard disk to be emptied. All hard disk recordings will be erased. Press SELECT to start the process. Enables a disk in optical disk drive to be erased. All recordings on the disk will be erased. Press SELECT to start the process.

4.8 Setup Menu DVB

This menu deals with settings to do with Digital TV Channels.
Digital Channel Management Auto Scan Digital Channels
Enables access to Digital Channel Management menu. Enables the initiation of a search for digital TV channels. This makes the unit perform a scan for digital TV programs. Each program found is identified by a number and a channel name. In Australia a total of 21 programs may be found, some of which are duplicates or irrelevant. Press SELECT button to start the SCAN
Manual Scan Digital Channels
Enables manual scanning for a particular digital channel according to name or frequency. Press SELECT to enter Manual Scan of Digital Channels menu.
Favourite Digital Channels
Enables the creation and maintenance of a list of favourite programs. Press SELECT to enter Favourite Digital Channels menu.

5. Using the DVR
The Tevion DVR provides a number of useful facilities, including the following: Viewing television programs on our favourite channels in good video and audio quality. Good quality playback of CDs and DVDs. Easy recording of television programs onto hard disk or DVD for later viewing. Transfer of recorded programs from Hard Disk to DVDs. A function called time-shifting allowing the viewing of a television program to be paused, while the continuation of the program is being recorded on hard disk (useful if the phone rings in the middle of viewing).

If you are already watching the program you now wish to record, do the following: 6. 7. 8. 9.

5.3.3 Scheduling the Recording of a TV Program on HDD Instead of using the One Touch Recording feature as explained above you may prefer to use Timer Recording, whereby you can schedule a program to be recorded at a particular point in time so that you can watch it latervia the HDD. Warning: This will only work if the unit has the correct Date and Time (can and should be checked from time to time via Setup Menu Date/Time). In particular, after a power failure, or after disconnecting the power cord from the DVR, the stored date resets itself to 01/01/08, which is most annoying and plays havoc with the recording schedule. Since the DVR is not connected to the Internet (and no proper Electronic Program Guides are likely to be available anyway for the foreseeable future) we are forced to do the scheduling the long-winded way (entering the data manually). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. On SRC press POWER button and wait 10 seconds for TV to turn on. On SRC press SOURCE button and select PVR/STB. On DRC press STA8DBY/O8 button to turn on the DVR and wait until No disc message is shown. On DRC press the DVB button (once or twice) to show TV programs from digital channels. On DRC press the TIMER button to enter the Timer Recording menu:
Use the Down Arrow button to move to the first blank line in the Timer Recording menu, then press the SELECT button and wait a few seconds for the Timer Recording Setup menu to appear:

Use the Down Arrow button and the SELECT button to select the TV channel you wish to record from. Use the Down Arrow button to move Record to, press the Right Arrow button and select HDD. Use the Down Arrow button to move to Quality. You can either leave it set at the default quality (EP) or you can change to a higher or lower quality as required. Use the Down Arrow button to move to Mode. For Mode you can select between several options: - Once sets up the recording to be done at a particular time but once only - Daily sets up the recording to be repeated every day at a particular time - Weekly sets up the recording to be repeated once a week at a particular time - Monthly sets up the recording to be repeated once a month at a particular time:
Use the navigation and numeric buttons to set up Date, Start time and End time. Warning: The Date is in American Date Format (mm/dd/yyyy). Dont forget to put your glasses on when you double-check the date and times you have entered (I am prone to enter 6s instead of 0s, and suffer the consequences). For Title it is a good idea to enter an abbreviated title (up to 8 characters) to identify the program being recorded. You can change it later (refer the section on Changing the Title of a TV Program Recorded on HDD). When you are ready, move down to OK and press the SELECT button. To modify a scheduled recording, select it in the list, press SELECT button and make the change(s). To schedule another recording, repeat Steps 6-13. To delete a scheduled recording, select it and press the ADD/CLEAR button. To exit, press the TIMER button.

The DVR can now be used for other things or be placed in Stand By mode. It will be reactivated at the time the scheduled recording is due to start. During recording the Power Indicator will change from red to purple. When recording has finished the Power Indicator will change from purple to blue and/or red. During the recording it will not be possible to use the DVR for anything else other than watching the program being recorded. Once the recording has been accomplished, the program can be viewed any time from the HDD.

5.3.4 Deleting a TV Program Recorded on HDD After successfully recording and perhaps viewing a TV program on hard disk you will usually want to delete it to make room for new recordings. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 5.3.5 Changing the Title of a TV Program Recorded on HDD After successfully recording and probably before viewing a TV program on hard disk you may want to edit the title of the recording to make it easier to find it. Unfortunately only a 12-character field is available in which to come up with a good name for the program, albeit abbreviated. However, within those 12 characters you can make use of all uppercase letters, all lowercase letters, all digits and the space character. Entering the new name of the program is done on an on-screen keyboard. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. On SRC press POWER button and wait 10 seconds for TV to turn on. On DRC press the Down Arrow button 3 times and Right Arrow button twice to Backspace button. Press Backspace button several times to delete the old title. Use the navigation keys to move around the Title name keyboard and change the title to something more meaningful (the Aa button toggles between the upper and lower case alphabets. Move to OK and press SELECT button to confirm the new title. To exit, press the HDD button one or more times.

If you want the DVD also to be viewable on a computer or another DVD player, the DVD must be finalised.

5.4.2 Compiling a DVD by Copying from HDD to DVD Instead of recording straight to a DVD it is much more flexible to compile the contents of a DVD from recordings on the hard disk. Consequently, it makes sense to always record on the hard disk rather than on DVD (except in special circumstances). The process of copying from HDD to DVD (sometimes called dubbing) allows you to put together a series of programs in a particular sequence, provided there is enough space on the DVD. Before you do the copying you may wish to edit the data about one or more of the HDD recordings, for instance, changing titles or index pictures. You may even want to clean up the contents using the procedure described in Hiding Unwanted Segments from a TV Program Recorded on HDD). To copy one or more programs from HDD to DVD, do the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. On SRC press POWER button and wait 10 seconds for TV to turn on. On SRC press SOURCE button and select PVR/STB. On DRC press STA8DBY/O8 button to turn on the DVR and wait until No disc message is shown. On DRC press OPE8/CLOSE button to open the tray. Insert a blank or at least a non-finalised DVD in tray. The type of DVD will be displayed in the left bottom corner of the screen (e.g. DVD+RW). On DRC press OPE8/CLOSE button again to close the tray and wait for disk to load. A small Loading icon will show in the bottom right corner, eventually to be replaced by a blue Ready icon. Once this has been achieved you can proceed with Step 7. On DRC press HDD button to display list of programs on hard disk. You can now select one or more programs for dubbing (copying) to DVD. The order in which you do the selection (by carrying out Steps 9-10) will determine the order in which the programs are added to the DVD. On DRC use Down Arrow or Up Arrow button to highlight a program to be copied to DVD. On DRC press ADD/CLEAR button to actually select the highlighted program for dubbing. A red dubbing icon will appear on the left next to a selected program. As you select (or de-select) a program, the percentage of disk capacity used will be displayed in top right corner. If a selected program wont fit, an error message of DVD is full will be displayed and you may then need to de-select one or more programs to make more space available. Repeat Steps 9-10 until all required programs have been selected for dubbing. On DRC press HDD button to start the copy process. Percentage progress is indicated in the left top corner of a screen next to a flashing icon. Dont get confused by the program displayed on screen not being the one you are in the process of copying. Instead it will be the current program on the selected TV channel. Just look at the percentage display. Wait until the copy process has completed 100% and the percentage display has disappeared before you do anything else. On DRC press HDD button to return to viewing. Consider finalising the DVD (refer section Finalising a DVD for External Use).

5.4.3 Transferring a Video Tape Cassette Recording to DVD Some video cassette tape recordings may be worth preserving on a more durable medium, such as DVD. This can be done by connecting the VCR directly to the DVR via the connections available on the front of the unit, and transferring the contents of the video cassette to DVD. 1. 2. Connect the VCR output terminals on the back of the VCR to the Video IN/Audio IN sockets (Red/Yellow/White) on the front of the DVR using a 3-lead RCA cable. Insert the video tape cassette into VCR and determine the start time (or counter) and stop time (or counter) of the program you wish to transfer. Calculate and write down the actual length of the program in minutes. Rewind the tape, and position it about 10 seconds before the program starts. On SRC press POWER button and wait 10 seconds for TV to turn on. On SRC press SOURCE button and select PVR/STB. On DRC press STA8DBY/O8 button to turn on the DVR and wait until No disc message is shown. On DRC press OPE8/CLOSE button to open the tray. Insert a blank recordable DVD in tray. On DRC press OPE8/CLOSE button again to close the tray and wait for disk to load. A small Loading icon will show in the bottom right corner, eventually to be replaced by a blue Ready icon. Once this has been achieved you can proceed with Step 10. On DRC press TIMER button to enter Timer Recording menu. On DRC move to first empty row. On DRC press SELECT button to enter Timer Recording Setup menu. On DRC press Right Arrow button and select Source Front CVBS. On DRC press SELECT button and then Down Arrow button. On DRC press Right Arrow button and select Recording To DVD On DRC press SELECT button and then Down Arrow button On DRC press Right Arrow button and select Quality, e.g. HQ for 1 hour of recording On DRC press SELECT button and then Down Arrow button twice to select recording to start at a convenient time (for example in 10 minutes time). On DRC press SELECT button and then Down Arrow button to select recording to end at a time to allow for the entire program to be recorded (according to the length of the program as determined in Step 2). On DRC press SELECT button and then Down Arrow button twice. On DRC press OK button to actually schedule the recording to occur. On DRC press TIMER button to exit Timer Recording Setup menu. Watch the TV screen. As the time for recording approaches you will see: 8otice: A timer recording task is preparing to be executed. Please wait. Only STOP key can terminate this.

At this stage the recording has been completed. You might like to check that the DVD can be played back on the DVR. If you intend to play the DVD on other devices than the DVR you should now finalise the DVD.
After performing the above procedure a couple of times with video tapes of mine, I discovered to my surprise that sometimes the resulting DVD could not successfully be played back on either of my two computers. The DVD simply stops after a few minutes. No such problems occurred when playing it back on the DVR. The reason for this is unclear at this point in time.

5.4.4 Finalising a DVD for External Use After you have recorded or copied one or more TV programs onto a DVD the DVD can be played straight away on the DVR, but it cannot be played on a computer or on another DVD player until it has gone through a process known as Disk Finalisation. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. After finalisation the DVD can be played on most stand-alone DVD players. After finalisation the DVD can also be played on a computer. It will contain folders and files similar to the following:

To play the DVD on a computer you may need to double-click one of the VOB files, e.g. VIDEO_TS.VOB. To play the DVD on a stand-alone DVD player follow procedures for that device.
