4. Outdoor antenna groundingIf you connect an outdoor antenna, ground the antenna system to protect against voltage surges and built-up static charges. Section 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70-1990, provides information about grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode. Refer to this diagram.

Installation
Placement
1. VentilationSituate the unit so that it receives proper ventilation. Do not install in a confined space such as a bookcase or cabinet. Allow at least 10 cm (4 inches) clearance from the rear of the unit. To prevent the risk of electric shock or fire due to overheating ensure curtains and other materials do not obstruct the units ventilation. 2. Foreign materialEnsure objects and liquids do not get into the unit. Avoid exposing the unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, and shock. 3. MagnetismSituate the unit away from equipment and devices that generate strong magnetic fields. 4. StackingDo not place heavy objects on top of this unit. 5. SurfacePlace the unit on a flat, level surface. 6. Carts and standsUse the unit only with carts and stands recommended by the manufacturer. Move carts with care. Sudden stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces can cause carts to overturn. 7. Wall and ceiling mountingDo not mount the unit on walls or ceilings unless specified in the instructions.
Maintenance
(See page 36 for details.) Unplug the unit from the household AC outlet before cleaning. Clean with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring powders, or solvents.
Service
1. Damage requiring service The unit should be serviced by qualified service personnel if: (a) The AC power supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or (b) Objects or liquids have gotten into the unit; or (c) The unit has been exposed to rain; or (d) The unit does not operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; or (e) The unit has been dropped or the cabinet damaged. 2. Servicing Do not attempt to service the unit beyond that described in these operating instructions. Refer all other servicing to authorized servicing personnel. 3. Replacement parts When parts need replacing ensure the servicer uses parts specified by the manufacturer or parts that have the same characteristics as the original parts. Unauthorized substitutes may result in fire, electric shock, or other hazards. 4. Safety check After repairs or service, ask the servicer to perform safety checks to confirm that the unit is in proper working condition.
The front and center speakers are designed to be used close to a television, but the picture may be affected with some televisions and set-up combinations. If this occurs, turn the television off for about 30 minutes. The televisions demagnetizing function should correct the problem. If it persists, move the speakers further away from the television. Note Surround speakers do not have magnetic shielding. Do not place them near televisions, personal computers or other devices easily influenced by magnetism.

Basic connections (for supplied accessories)
Optional antenna connections
You may need an outdoor antenna if you use this system in a mountainous region or inside a reinforced-concrete building, etc.
Plug the AC power cord into a household AC outlet only after all other connections have been made. To prepare the antenna wires and speaker cords, twist the vinyl cover tip and pull off.
FM outdoor antenna
Connect the FM indoor antenna.
Tape the antenna to a wall or column, in a position where radio signals are received with the least amount of interference. Note For best reception sound quality: An FM outdoor antenna is recommended.

Presetting radio broadcasts
There are two methods of presetting stations. Automatic presetting : All the stations the tuner can receive are preset. Manual presetting : You can select the stations to preset and the order they are preset in. Up to 12 stations each can be set in the FM and AM bands.
Automatic presetting
Do the following once each for FM and AM. Preparation: Tune to the frequency where presetting is to begin (A page 14).

Manual presetting
Preset the stations one at a time.
1 Press [TUNER, BAND] to select the FM or AM. 2 Press [MEMORY )/f ] then press [TUNE/TIME ADJ (3) or (4)] to tune to the required station. 3 Press [MEMORY )/f ] then press [TUNE/TIME ADJ (3) or (4)] to tune to select a channel. 4 Press [MEMORY )/f ]. The station occupying a channel is erased if another station is preset in that channel.

Release the button when frequency begins to change. The tuner presets all the stations it can receive into the channels in ascending order. When finished, the last station memorized is tuned in.

Do not touch the recorded surface.
Compact disc operations
How to clean CDs Be sure to store discs in their cases to protect them from dust, scratches, and warping. Do not place or store discs in the following places Locations exposed to direct sunlight Humid or dusty locations Locations directly exposed to a heat vent or heating appliance In the glove compartment or on the rear deck of an automobile Wipe from inside outward.
Press [c OPEN/CLOSE] button.
The unit will come on automatically and the tray opens.
Set CD in the tray.
To continue loading CDs in the other trays Press another [(CD 1) ~ (CD 5)] to select the required tray and press [c OPEN/CLOSE] to open the tray. The current tray closes and the selected tray automatically opens. Press [c OPEN/CLOSE] to close the tray.
Press [(CD 1) ~ (CD 5)] to play your desired disc.
(If the desired CD is indicated on the display panel, the same operation can be accomplished by pressing [-].) Play will start from the first track on the disc and will continue until the last track of the final disc is played (see below).

Disc indicators The disc indicators light whenever the tray is in the playing position whether it is loaded or not. What is meant by final disc? To listen to special CDs and tracks (CD Manager function)
This function makes it easier for you to select special CDs and tracks from amongst those loaded in the player. You can use this function to make recordings as well.
There are 3 CD/track selection modes.
For playing back 1 track only from all loaded CDs 1-Track mode (1-TRACK) For playing back 1 CD only from all loaded CDs 1-Disc mode (1-DISC) For playing back 1 track on all loaded CDs 1-Track All-Disc mode (1-ALL)
Press [CD MANAGER] to select the desired mode.

Only one particular track is played. The tracks on only one particular disc are played. The same track numbers on each of the CDs are played in succession. (NORMAL: The original display is restored in about 3 seconds.)

Note This step is not required if 1-ALL was selected in step 2.

The selected track will start. To stop play Press [L]. When playback ends NORMAL will appear on the display for about 3 seconds, then the CD MANAGER function will turn OFF automatically.
Specified track number
During play in the 1-ALL mode:
It is not possible to skip back to a CD whose track has already been played. If a CD does not have the designated track number, it is skipped and play continues.
You can use the CD Manager function together with repeat play. CD Manager function will be canceled when you press the [RANDOM] button.

Listening to tapes
You can use either deck 1 or deck 2 for tape playback.
SC-AK77 -AK44
The unit can play normal, high and metal position tapes. It identifies the type automatically.
Use normal position tapes. High position and metal position tapes can be played, but the unit will not be able to do full justice to the characteristics of these tapes.
Press [TAPE, DECK 1/2].
The unit will come on automatically. If the unit was off and a cassette was loaded, play will start automatically (One touch play function).
Press [c DECK 1 OPEN] or [c DECK 2 OPEN] and insert the tape.
Front side
Insert the tape with the exposed tape facing down. Close the holder by hand.
Press [REV MODE] to select the reverse mode.

To record special CDs and tracks (CD Manager function)
This function makes it easier for you to select special CDs and tracks from amongst those loaded in the player. Preparation Press [cDECK 2 OPEN] and insert the tape. Wind up the leader tape so recording can begin immediately.
1-TRACK 1-DISC NORMAL (OFF) 1-ALL
Only one particular track is recorded. The tracks on only one particular disc are recorded. The same track numbers on each of the CDs are recorded in succession. (NORMAL: The original display is restored in about 3 seconds.)

A While recording, if a track is cut off in the middle at the end of the front side, it is re-recorded from the beginning, on the reverse side. At the end of the reverse side, recording stops and the current track will be interrupted.

Using the built-in sound quality/ sound field settings
Dial [SOUND EQ] to select the sound quality or sound field.
When it is turned clockwise, the settings are selected in the following sequence. 1 HEAVY (sound quality) Select this when playing rock or other kinds of music that sound better with an added punch. 2 CLEAR (sound quality) Select this for jazz or other kinds of music for which clarity in the treble range is desired. 3 SOFT (sound quality) Select this when listening to background music. 4 DISCO (sound field) Select this to produce sound with the same kind of lengthy reverberations heard at a disco. 5 LIVE (sound field) Select this to make vocals more alive. 6 HALL (sound field) Select this to add an expansiveness to the sound to produce the atmosphere of a great concert hall. 7 SC-AK77 only MANUAL (see page 28) 8 SC-AK77 only AI-EQ (see page 28) The original display is restored on the display panel in about 5 seconds. Enhancing the sound quality
This feature enhances the bass and treble effect of the sound.
Varying the sound quality with the manual equalizer

Adjust the sound quality.

The Al equalizer uses the SOFT, SHARP, HEAVY and LIGHT sound quality coordinates to achieve subtle sound quality settings with ease.

Select the surround mode appropriate to the source you are using. Read the following explanations to aid your selection. You may experience a reduction in sound quality when these surround systems and effects are used with some sources. If this occurs, either turn the surround system or effect off or reduce the level of the effect.

Recognizing the sound sources and software that can be used
6CH DISCRETE INPUT (Dolby Digital / DTS)
You will need a DVD player that has a built in decoder to enjoy DVDs with this unit. Dolby Digital and DTS are discrete 6 (5.1) channel surround systems developed for cinema use. Not all Dolby Digital sources are recorded with 6 channels. Some sources marked Dolby Digital may be recorded in Dolby Surround, a 2 channel system. Connect a subwoofer (not included) to the SUBWOOFER OUT terminal on the rear panel of this system to increase the effect.
Software encoded with Dolby Digital can be identified with this mark. DVD
Software encoded with DTS can be identified with this mark. DVD Laser discs CDs
DTS and DTS Digital Surround are trademarks of Digital Theater Systems, Inc. Note All the features are only effective if speakers are used. No discernible effect will be heard through headphones.
DOLBY PRO LOGIC
This mode cannot be used with the radio, 6CH DISCRETE INPUT mode, or if headphones are connected.
This mode adds surround effects to normal music sources.

This system was developed to get a better sense of presence from sources encoded with Dolby Surround. The feeling of position has been improved by the addition of a separate center speaker channel. This unit has built-in Dolby Pro Logic circuit so you can enjoy Dolby Surround by connecting the speakers.

Sit in the normal listening position and make the adjustments with the remote control. 1 Output the test signal from the DVD player (not included). Set the channel level to 0 dB on the DVD player, and adjust the channel level on this system. 2 Press [VOLUME ( or +)]. Set the volume to the normal listening level.

by remote control only This timer turns your system OFF at the set time (Max. 2 hours, settable at 30-minute intervals). It lets you fall asleep listening to music. Preparation
PLAY/ REC
Switch on the power. The figure shows how to set the system to standby mode after 30 minutes.
To change the timer Press [rPLAY/rREC] to select the desired timer. Every time the button is pressed the setting changes as follows.
PLAY REC
(OFF) (OFF) To check settings While the unit is on and the rPLAY (or rREC) indicator is on, press [CLOCK/TIMER] so rPLAY (or rREC) appears on the display. Two seconds after rPLAY (or rREC) appear, the settings are displayed in the following order: For play timer For record timer 1 Play start time 1 Recording start time 2 Play finish time 2 Recording finish time 3 Play source 3 Recording source 4 Playback volume You can check the settings even when the system is OFF by pressing [CLOCK/TIMER] twice. To enjoy the desired source after the timer setting is completed The volume level (for play timer) and music source are stored in the timer memory and the timer will start in these preset conditions. However, the Disc numbers and reverse mode (for SC-AK77) do not get stored in the timer memory. 1. After step 4, start playing the desired source. 2. Reset the Disc numbers and reverse mode (for SC-AK77) if you have changed any of them, confirm that a Disc or cassette is inserted, then press [f/7, POWER] to put the unit on standby. Notes If you switch the system to the standby mode while the play/record timer is functioning, the OFF time setting will not be activated. If AUX 1/2 (SC-AK66 and SC-AK62: AUX) or 6CH INPUT is selected as the source, when the timer comes ON, the system will turn ON and will engage AUX 1/2 (SC-AK66 and SC-AK62: AUX) or 6CH INPUT as the source. If you want to playback or record from a connected component, set the components timer to the same time. (See the instruction manual that came with the component.) While enjoying the desired source:
Press [SLEEP] to select the desired time.

SLEEP OFF
The system is turned off after the set time has elapsed. To cancel the sleep timer: Press [SLEEP] to select SLEEP OFF. To confirm the remaining time: (only while system is ON) Press [SLEEP]. To change the time remaining during operation: Press [SLEEP] to show the remaining time then press [SLEEP] to select the desired time.
Notes The sleep timer turns OFF automatically the moment you attempt to edit-record a CD using CD Manager function. The sleep timer can be used in combination with the play/record timer. The sleep timer always has priority. Be sure not to overlap timer settings.

Common Problems
No sound. Turn the volume up. The speaker cables may be shorted. Turn the unit off, check and correct the connections and turn the unit on. 6, 7 Check the speaker connections. 6, 7
Sound is unfixed, reversed or comes from one speaker only. Humming heard during play. ERROR is displayed. : appears on the display. F61 is displayed.
An AC power supply cord or fluorescent light is near the cables. Keep other appliances and cords away from this units cables. Incorrect operation performed. Read the instructions and try again. You plugged the power supply cord in for the first time or there was a power failure recently. Set the time. $ Check and correct the speaker cords connection. 6 , 7 If this does not fix the problem, there is a power supply problem. Consult the dealer.
Listening to the radio
Noise is heard. The stereo indicator flickers or doesnt light. Sound is distorted. A beat sound is heard. A low hum is heard during AM broadcasts. Use an outdoor antenna. 7
Turn the TV off or separate it from the unit. Separate the antenna from other cables and cords.
When there is a television set nearby
The picture on the TV disappears or stripes appear on the screen. The location and orientation of the antenna are incorrect. If you are using an indoor antenna, change to an outdoor antenna. The TV antenna wire is too close to the unit. Separate the antenna wire of the TV set from the unit.
Using the cassette deck
Poor quality sound. Recording is not possible. Clean the heads. { If the erasure prevention tabs have been removed, cover the holes with adhesive tape.
Playing discs
The display is wrong or play wont start. The disc may be upside down. ) Wipe the disc. Replace the disc if it is scratched, warped, or non-standard. Condensation may have formed inside the unit due to a sudden change in temperature. Wait about an hour for it to clear and try again. There is a problem with the disc mechanism. (A power failure may have occurred.) The tray will open automatically. Remove the disc from the tray, and after ensuring there is no disc in the tray, close it. The unit will make the disc changing noises for a few moments and then it should operate normally.
TAKE OUT/DISC appears on the display.
Remote control doesnt work. Check the batteries are inserted correctly. 9 Replace the batteries if they are worn.

If the surfaces are dirty
To clean this unit, wipe with a soft, dry cloth. If the surfaces are extremely dirty, use a soft cloth dipped in a soapand-water solution or a weak detergent solution. Never use alcohol, paint thinner or benzine to clean this unit. Before using a chemically treated cloth, carefully read the instructions that came with the cloth.
