Padded and stylish, but DP2 owners take note This case fits my DP1 snugly, offering a secure and padded environment for my compact camera. Totally Disappointed I ordered Sigma Dp1 because I did read so many good reviews but at the same time I bought it. Sun Worshiper The Sigma DP1 is a sun worshiper and can take the most amazing pictures if you know some basics. It loves iso 100 in bright daylight.

The Sigma DP1 is a highly specialized tool for the artist/photographer and has a very sharp 28mm (35mm equiv.)non-interchangeable wide angle lens.

Capable of excellent image quality. Requires careful use and post-processing with SPP. Not a camera for the casual user.

Even better than I expected The DP-1 met and exceeded my expectations as a camera. It has indeed improved my approach to photography.

Hi all.....I had own a canon g10, leica dlux-3, panny lx3....& canon 400d...if compare to the dp1.

Sigma DP1 Ahhh....the DP1! This cam has had some awful things said about it. I agree with many but....the images are the best.
Larsen 3:33pm on Sunday, March 21st, 2010
Great, great quality. No compromise. Incredible color and tone extension and dynamic range. The B&N and color is similar film. Not perfect camera.

DTS (Digital Theater Systems)
This surround system is used in many movie theaters around the world. There is good separation between the channels, so realistic sound effects are possible.

Dynamic range

Dynamic range is the difference between the lowest level of sound that can be heard above the noise of the equipment and the highest level of sound before distortion occurs.

Film and video

DVD-Videos are recorded using either film or video. Usually, film is recorded at 24 frames per second, the rate movies are filmed at, while video is recorded at 30 frames per second.
Frame still and field still
Frames are the still pictures that go together to make a moving picture. There are about 30 frames shown each second. One frame is made up of two fields. A regular television shows these fields one after the other to create frames. A still is shown when you pause a moving picture. A frame still is made up of two alternating fields, so the picture may appear blurred, but overall quality is high. A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of a frame still so picture quality is lower.

I: Intra coded picture This picture has the best quality and is the best to use when adjusting the picture. P: Predictive coded picture This picture is calculated based on past I or P-pictures. B: Bidirectionally-predictive coded picture This picture is calculated by comparing past and future I and P-pictures so it has the lowest volume of information.

Cannot select alternative languages. No menu play. No subtitles. The position of the subtitles is incorrect. Soundtrack and/or subtitle language is not the one selected with the SETUP menus. Cannot change angle. The SETUP menu cannot be accessed. Cannot add markers. There are already markers. [RAM] Marker numbers I added are different when I call them up. [RAM] Cannot select random or program play. Folders deeper than the eighth layer on a data CD are not displayed correctly. You have forgotten your ratings password. Reset all the SETUP settings to Factory Preset. The unit doesnt play the data type (WMA/MP3 or JPEG) selected in the Mixed Disc Audio & Stills in the SETUP menu.
This function is dependent on software availability. Even if a disc has a number of angles recorded, these angles may be recorded for specific scenes only. Select DVD/CD as the source. Cancel all group, program and random play. You cannot add markers while playing a play list or if the discs play time doesnt appear on the units display. The unit reads and displays the markers added with a DVD video recorder. You can clear them but reappear when you switch the unit to standby, change the source, or open the disc tray. The unit numbers markers by time so they change when you add and delete them.
You cannot select random or program play with some DVD-Video. Folders deeper than the eighth layer are displayed as the eighth layer.
While stopped and DVD/CD is the source, press and hold [] on the unit and [S10] on the remote control for about 3 seconds until Initialized disappears from the television. Turn the unit off and on again. All settings will return to the default values. Reload the disc for the setting to be effective. Press [< OPEN/CLOSE] to open the tray, then press [1 DVD/CD] to start play.
No sound. Distorted sound. Check the connections. Turn the volume up. Turn muting off. Turn Advanced surround off if it causes distortion. Switch off the unit, determine and correct the cause, then switch the unit on. Causes include: Shorting (bare wires touching) of positive and negative speaker wires. Using speakers with an impedance lower than that rated for this unit. Straining of the speakers through excessive volume or power. Using the unit in a hot environment without proper ventilation. If you have connected this unit to other equipment through the OPTICAL OUT terminal, ensure you have selected the correct settings for Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround in the SETUP menus Audio menu. Dialogue enhancer and Advanced surround do not work when the unit is outputting bitstream signals. Advanced surround does not work if you have changed the play speed. Some distortion is normal during SEARCH. Check the connection. Make sure the television is on. Ensure the televisions video input setting (e.g., VIDEO 1) is correct. Go to Video in the SETUP menus, and change TV Aspect to suit your television. Use the television to change the aspect to the correct one. If your television cannot change the aspect when input is progressive, try changing 4:3 Aspect with the on-screen menu icons. Ensure that the unit is connected directly to the television, and is not connected through a video cassette recorder. Connect to the component video (480P) input terminals on a television compatible with this units copy guard system. You cannot view progressive video if your television is not compatible. Change the size with the variable zoom function. The images on PAL system DVD-Audio are compressed for display. They may also appear vertically stretched. Change Video output mode to 480I so PROGRESSIVE on the display goes out. This problem is caused by the editing method or material used on DVD-Video, but should be corrected if you use interlace output. Check the settings in the On-Screen Menu Icons Picture Menu. Mobile telephone chargers can cause some disturbance. The location and orientation of the antenna are incorrect. If you are using an indoor antenna, change to an outdoor antenna. The television antenna wire is too close to the unit. Separate the antenna wire of the television from the unit. Change the zoom ratio to k1.00. With the on-screen icon menus, change Subtitle Position to 0 or change 4:3 Aspect to Normal. 19

Group Test # Pseudo Surround Systems

Panasonic

ooking more like a micro hi-fi system than a home cinema system, the Panasonic SC-DP1 is an affordable and stylish two-speaker setup. We are constantly amazed by what manufactures manage to cram into the tiniest of components, and the SC-DP1 incorporates both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding along with Panasonics Advanced Surround Sound technology to create surround sound from two speakers. The systems styling follows typical micro hi-fi conventions, with two bookshelf speakers housed in wood-effect cabinets partnering the compact main unit (theres no subwoofer). On closer inspection the speakers look a bit plasticky, and the silver trims around the drivers are reminiscent of clumsy 1990s speakers, which youll either love or hate. The system is certainly well-equipped. DVD-Audio playback is of particular interest but its important to note that the Panny only plays discs in their non-high-resolution two-channel mode. JPEG files downloaded from a computer stored on CD-R and CD-RWs are also playable a bonus for anyone who wants to view their holiday snaps on a TV screen. Setup is a doddle, and on-screen menus make it easy to tailor settings to your TV. Picture connections are also respectable, with RGB Scart, S-video and composite video on board. Audio connections,

however, are less impressive, and theres just one analogue audio input for connection to an external source, plus an output for an add-on subwoofer. Panasonic has a reputation for strong DVD images and the SC-DP1 delivers colours and details that are up to these high standards. The colour balance is particularly impressive, and images are vibrant without being over-exaggerated. They also have a good sense of depth, and the inky darkness during the hidden palace sequences of Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life boasts plenty of detail. But its not all good news. Picture resolution seems below par as the Panny struggles to define intricate details in the trees, and the water-bike sequence shows some digitisation as the system struggles to cope with splashes and ripples on the sea. TEST SCENE

TOMB RAIDER 2

WEAK AS WATER
The splashes of water generated by Laras water-bike show up some picture digitisation, and surround effects sound weak and unrealistic

Lost in action

Sadly, the SC-PD1s pseudo surround sound effect is almost nonexistent, and theres little in the way of action effects creeping up the side of the room. The Advanced Surround Sound technology does make some attempt at broadening the stereo soundstage, however, and ambient effects like echoes inside the hidden palace and the lapping of the sea in Tomb Raider 2 fill the room with sound that stretches beyond the speakers. Dialogue, meanwhile, has a tendency to get lost in the action, but selecting Dialogue Enhance makes voices easier to decipher. Strangely, Panasonics Advanced Surround Sound mode is more effective with stereo music, and The Darkness rocky anthem I Believe in a Thing Called Love somehow manages to sound like it is coming from speakers placed all around the room. Theres plenty to like about the Panasonic SC-DP1, and its mini looks and price are bound to appeal. But its disappointing pseudo surround sound with movies means it falls short of the mark here, and there are more convincing two-speaker surround models to be had for a little extra cash. WHC

GOOD POINTS

Micro-sized home cinema system with respectable stereo sound and an ambient surround effect at best

BAD POINTS

Virtual surround is disappointing and picture resolution is flawed

OVERALL

Attractive system with DVD-Audio, but with virtual surround sound its one of the weakest in this test
