| battery works just as good as the more expensive one tmobile sells....great price and works perfectly I got this battery because my original battery was really drained out and died within a couple hours. Fit my phone perfectly, good replacement for the back door. Battery life is great, no problems, would buy again if needed. | |

ON TEST: PANASONIC SC-ST1
DVD-Audio home cinema system
Style guru
Panasonics latest home cinema system, the SC-ST1, has got real chic, but is it a case of style over substance? Shaun Marin puts it to the test
This Panasonic system is the latest in a long line of surround sound systems to ape the styling of Band & Olufsen at a price most people can afford. It offers DVD-Audio, which is all well and good but we think any high-resolution audio system worth its salt should play Super Audio CD discs as well. The lack of SACD is due to political reasons, but how many consumers care about that? send power from the sub to the main unit you only need to plug the sub in to the mains. The subwoofer itself features spring clip terminals for all five speakers, but is sleek enough to tuck out of sight once youve set it up. The set-up procedure is once again accessed using the remote. Unfortunately, the level setting is a matter of set gradients rather than a more flexible controller dial. The slim speakers sit atop equally svelte pillars, which in turn are placed on round plinths. Its up to you to put them together. The only exception is the centre speaker youre left to your own devices to site this somewhere on top or below the TV. A rather clever cable management system is built into the pillars: the cable goes up through the bottom of the plinth and then is carried up to a set of connecting wires into the speakers. However, this does provide room for error, and one of the connecting links of cable on our review sample was a touch too short to meet the connections, so we had to run the main cable up to the speaker anyway. Also, this does mean you cant upgrade the cable, but then most people wont even bother to consider this.
Nicely styled and thoughtfully laid out
DESCRIPTION
Relatively affordable the SC-ST1 may be, but it still sits atop the price pinnacle of Panasonics current system line-up, and looks worth every penny of its 900 price tag. The SC-ST1 comprises the SA-ST1 main unit and SB-STP1 5.1 surround sound speaker system. The SA-ST1 main unit is straight out of hi-fis hi-style catalogue: a tall, vertical column, with plenty of plastic to give it a lustrous sheen, and a vertically-mounted disc tray that pops out at the touch of a button. The latter feels a bit odd, just sitting the disc in there when loading, but you soon get used to it. The action is pretty smooth, too, and just below it sits a reasonablysized LCD display. Monitor connections consist of RGB Scart, S-video, composite and component video obviously part of Panasonics plan to make this a high-end solution. There are also two sets of analogue inputs, one of which is assigned for your TV, allowing you to listen to off-air broadcasts in Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound. Most importantly, a cable connects the main unit to the chunky subwoofer. This is vital to get right, as its the sub that contains the amplification and not the main unit. The connection looks rather like a computers serial port and is used to send the decoded analogue signal from the processor to the subwoofer. It is also used to
Playback controls are on the top
OPERATION
In use, the SC-ST1 is a dream of a system. There are no controls on the front of the unit, and indeed, only a smattering of basic transport options on the top of the unit, out of sight. The remote control may be less stylish, but its very easy to get to grips with. Just as well, because with the lack of on-board controls, most of the set up and day-to-day usage will be accessed from here. When using the remote, the main unit is responsive and theres just enough in the way of onscreen help to stop you getting too confused.
Most of the trick play options and surround features are accessed quickly and simply using the remote. There are six DSP modes, plus a couple of surround sound options depending on whether you are playing music or movies. But most of the time we left these set to off and just let the Panasonic do its thing.

PERFORMANCE
Generally, this turned out to be a good move, as the Panasonic put in a performance that most surround sound systems of its ilk would be proud of. The highlight is the picture quality, particularly when linked up using the component connections to a suitable monitor. With Toy Story, the system proved itself adept at presenting the vivid colour palette and fast moving action without a blip. Switch to the more natural fare of Donnie Darko and skin tones win out even those of our pallid titular hero. Contrast levels are also impressive for a system of this type, although in absolute terms theres not quite the information wed demand from a stand-alone DVD player. The DTS soundtrack of Minority Report proves that this system is capable of impressive subtleties of
sound. The difference between it and what is in this case an inferior Dolby Digital track on the same disc shine through, and really engage you in the movie. Its not just the big thumping bass notes that are occasionally called for, but the impressive way the speech is delivered in the tense but low-key chance scene in the shopping mall. The long centre speaker makes use of the extra amplifier power to do a particularly good job of keeping the action focused and providing depth and weight to the characters. All well and good for movies then, but musically this system is no star. There may well be DVDAudio capability on board, but the high-resolution surround sound is lost through these speakers. Led Zeppelins How the West Was Won Audio disc sounds no better than the recent live DVD-Video release,
while the admittedly eccentric mix of the Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots sounds even more confused than normal. The subwoofer just doesnt offer the dexterity to keep a rhythm going. Its fine for the odd crash bang and even the occasional wallop, but ask it to keep time with a stereo recording and it gives up the ghost all to easily.
CONCLUSION
While not quite a case of style winning out over substance, theres no denying that this system looks better than it performs, particularly with music. However, with movies the Panasonic is highly impressive and puts on a storming performance, even at pretty high volumes. At this price, though, we expect more including that vital Super Audio CD compatibility and a more refined musical performance

Notes on speaker use You can damage your speakers and shorten their useful life if you play sound at high levels over extended pedods. Reduce the volume in the following cases to avoid damage. -- When playing distorted sound. --When the speakers are receiving howling from a record player, noise from FM broadcasts, or continuous signals from an oscillator, test disc, or electronic instrument. -- When adjusting the sound quality. -- When turning the unit on or off. If irregular coloring occurs on your television These speakers are designed to be used close to a television, but the picture may be affected with some televisions and set-up combinations. If this occurs, turn the television off for about 30 minutes. The television's demagnetizing function should correct the problem. If it persists, move the speakers further away from the television.
Caution Use the speakers only with the recommended system. Failure to do so may lead to damage to the amplifier and/or the speakers, and may result in the risk of fire. Consult a qualified service person if damage has occurred or if you experience a sudden change in performance. Do not attach these speakers to walls or ceilings.

Frames are the still pictures that go together to make a moving picture. There are about 30 frames shown each second. One frame is made up of two fields. A regular television shows these fields one after the other to create frames. A still is shown when you pause a moving picture. A frame still is made up of two alternating fields, so the picture may appear blurred, but overall quality is high. A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of a frame still so picture quality is lower. Interlace and progressive output NTSC, the video signal standard, has 480 interlaced (I) scan lines, whereas progressive scanning uses twice the number of scan lines. I:: This is called 480P. The video signals output from this unit's COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminals (Y, PB, PR) allow you to enjoy higher quality pictures than if the signals were output from the VIDEO OUT terminal or S VIDEO OUT terminal. I/P/B MPEG 2, the video compression standard adopted DVD-Video, codes frames using these 3 picture types. for use with
