For your safety, please read the following text carefully. This appliance is supplied with a moulded three pin mains plug for your safety and convenience. A 5-ampere fuse is tted in this plug. Disconnect the FM indoor antenna. The antenna should be installed by a competent technician.
Run a piece of vinyl wire horizontally across a window or other convenient location. Leave the loop antenna connected.
Preparing the remote control
Do not: mix old and new batteries. use different types of batteries at the same time. take apart or short circuit the batteries. attempt to recharge alkaline or manganese batteries. use batteries if the covering has been peeled off. Mishandling of batteries in the remote control can cause electrolyte leakage, which may cause a re. Remove the batteries if the remote control is not going to be used for a long period of time. DEMO function

When the unit is rst plugged in, a demonstration of its functions may be shown on the display. If the demo setting is off, you can show a demonstration by selecting DEMO ON. Press and hold [-7 STOP, DEMO] on the main unit. The display changes each time you press and hold the button. Handling of the disc trays and discs

This auto off function allows you to turn off the unit in disc, tape or USB mode only after left unused for 10 minutes. Press and hold [-SLEEP, AUTO OFF] to activate the function. Press and hold [-SLEEP, AUTO OFF] again to cancel. The setting is maintained even if the unit is turned off.
To dim the display panel. Press the button to activate. Press the button again to cancel.

Basic play

You can listen to specic discs and tracks. Press [0, OPEN/CLOSE] on the main unit to open the tray. The unit turns on, load a disc in the current tray with the label facing up. Press [0, OPEN/CLOSE] to close the tray. Press [6, CD] to start play. You can also press [DISC] and then [1] ~ [5] to select and play the other loaded discs. Preparation Select and play your desired disc. Press [ 7, CLEAR]. Press [PLAY MODE] to select the desired mode.

NO TAG is displayed if titles with tags have not been entered. Maximum number of displayable characters: approximately 30 This unit can display album, track and artist name with MP3 ID3 tags (version 1.0 and 1.1). ID3 is a tag embedded in MP3 track to provide information about the track. Titles containing text data that the unit does not support cannot be displayed. Titles entered with 2-byte code cannot be displayed correctly on this unit.

Advanced play

Program play
Clear the last track This function allows you to program up to 24 tracks. Clear all programmed tracks
Press [DEL] in the stop mode. Press [7, CLEAR] in the stop mode. CLEAR ALL is displayed.
Press [6, CD] and then [7, CLEAR]. Press [PROGRAM]. PGM appears. Press [DISC] and then [1] ~ [5] to select the disc. Press the numeric buttons to select your desired track. Repeat steps 3 to 4 to program other tracks. Press [6, CD] to start play.
Note: You cannot program CD-DA together with MP3 tracks. The program memory is cleared when you change a disc or open the disc tray. You cannot program more than one disc.

Repeat play

You can repeat program play or other selected play mode. Press [REPEAT]. is displayed. To cancel Press [REPEAT] again. is cleared. Note: You can use repeat mode with Program play (\ see left) and Play Mode function (\ page 10).
Press [DISC] and then [1] ~ [5] to select the disc. Press [7, CLEAR]. Press [PROGRAM]. Press [5/, ALBUM] to select your desired album.

The program order is displayed followed by the album number and track number.
Press [OK]. Repeat steps 4 to 6 to program other tracks.
Cassette tape Play and record
The buttons described for Cassette tape Play and record are mainly using the main unit unless indicated otherwise.
Use normal position tapes. High position and metal position tapes can be played, but the unit will not be able to identify the characteristics of these tapes.

Select the source to be recorded. Radio recording: Tune in the station. (\ page 13) Disc recording: Insert the disc(s) you want to record. Press [6, CD] and then [-7 STOP, DEMO]. Prepare the desired disc recording mode. To Record programmed tracks Action Perform steps 2 to 4 in Program play (\ page 11). Perform steps 3 to 6 in Program play (\ page 11). By remote control only Record specic discs or tracks 1) Press [DISC] and then [1] ~ [5] to select the disc. Ensure disc is stopped. 2) Press [PLAY MODE] to select the desired mode (\ page 10). 3) For 1-ALBUM mode and 1-TRACK mode: Press [5/, ALBUM] to select the album. For 1-TRACK mode: Press [4, / REW] or [, select the track.
Press [3, TAPE]. The unit turns on. If a cassette was loaded, play starts automatically (One touch play). Press [0, OPEN] and insert the cassette. Insert with the side to be played facing towards you and the exposed tape facing down. Close the holder by hand. Press [3, TAPE] to start play. Action Press [-7 STOP, DEMO].

Note: Tapes exceeding 100 minutes are thin and can break or get caught in the mechanism. Tape slack can get caught up in the mechanism and should be wound up before the tape is played.
TPS (Tape Program Sensor)
This function enables you to search the beginning of up to a maximum of 9 tracks. Record on the other side of the tape Turn the cassette over and press [ REC, TAPE].
Press [ / REW / 4] or [ / FF / ] during play. Play resumes from the track found. Note: TPS may not operate correctly in the following situations: If the interval between tracks is less than 4 seconds. If there is noise between tracks. If there are silent parts within tracks. Erase a recorded sound 1) Press [3, TAPE] and then [-7 STOP, DEMO]. 2) Insert the recorded cassette. 3) Press [ REC, TAPE].
Your attention is drawn to the fact that recording pre-recorded tapes or discs or other published or broadcast material may infringe copyright laws.

Recording

Selection of tapes for recording Use normal position tapes. High position and metal position tapes can be used, but this unit will not be able to record or erase them correctly. Note: Changes to volume and sound quality do not affect recording. This function does not work during any RANDOM mode selection. Preparation Wind up the source tape so recording can begin immediately.

Using the timers

To activate the timer

Setting the clock

This is a 24-hour clock.

Press [ PLAY/REC] repeatedly to turn on your desired timer. REC PLAY no display (off)

Displaying the clock Press [CLOCK / TIMER] once when the unit is on or in standby mode. The time is displayed for a few seconds. Note: Reset the clock regularly to maintain accuracy.
Using the play or record timer
You can set the timer to come on at a certain time to wake you up (play timer) or to record from the radio or the portable audio equipment (record timer). Play timer and record timer cannot be used together. Turn the unit on and set the clock. Check the cassettes erasure prevention tabs (\ page 12), insert the cassette and tune to the radio station (\ page 13) or select the music port source (\ page 16).

By main unit only

Press [MANUAL EQ] repeatedly to select your desired setting. TREBLE MID Press [ / REW / 4] or [ / FF / ] to adjust the level.

Boosting the subwoofer

Press [SUBWOOFER] repeatedly to select your desired setting. MID (medium) MAX (high) OFF (off)
Note: The level of the pitch is between -3 to +3. The changes you make are stored and automatically recalled the next time you activate Manual EQ.
Note: This function is not applicable when a headphone is connected.

Connecting the Universal Dock for iPod
You can charge and play your iPod by connecting a Universal Dock for iPod (SH-PD10, sold separately) to this unit.
Avoid interfering with other Panasonic equipment
Other Panasonic audio or video equipment may start functioning when you operate the unit using the supplied remote control. You can operate this unit in another mode by setting the remote control operating mode to REMOTE 2. The main unit and remote control must be set to the same mode.
Connecting and charging the iPod
Connect the Universal Dock for iPod into the OPTION port.

iPod (not included)

Press [MUSIC P.] (main unit: [FM/AM/MUSIC P.]) to select MUSIC PORT. Press and hold [FM/AM/MUSIC P.] on the main unit. Then press [2] on the remote control until REMOTE 2 is displayed. Press and hold [OK] on the remote control followed by numeric button [2]. Rear panel of this main unit SH-PD10 (not included)
Insert the appropriate adapter and place your iPod into the Universal Dock. (See the SH-PD10s instruction manual.)
To change the mode back to REMOTE 1, repeat the steps above by replacing [2] with [1].
Note: Hold the dock when disconnecting the iPod. iPod will be recharged regardless of whether this unit is on or off.

Connecting to a portable audio equipment

Playing the iPod

This feature enables you to enjoy music from a portable audio equipment.
Connect the iPod as described above. Press [6, OPTION] to start play. Action Press [6, OPTION] or [7, CLEAR]. Press [6, OPTION] to resume play.

Playing or recording from a portable audio equipment
Switch off the equaliser function (if there is any) of the portable audio equipment before you plug into the MUSIC PORT jack. Otherwise, sound from the speaker may be distorted.

Use as iPod menu cursor

Press [5/, ALBUM].
Plug the audio cord into the MUSIC PORT jack. Press [MUSIC P.] (main unit: [FM/AM/MUSIC P.]) to select MUSIC PORT. For listening : Proceed to step 3. For recording : Press [ REC, TAPE] on the main unit to start recording. Play the portable audio equipment. (See the portable audio equipments instruction manual.)
Conrm iPod menu selection

Press [OK].

Note: Refer to the SH-PD10s instruction manual for the compatible iPod models. iPod is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.

Connecting and playing a Bluetooth device
For the United Kingdom and Continental Europe By connecting a Bluetooth Receiver (example: SH-FX570R, sold separately), you can receive and play the audio stored in your Bluetooth audio source device (personal computer, etc).
Reduce the volume and connect the USB mass storage device. Press [6, USB] to start play. Action Press [6, USB]. Press again to resume play.

Press [7, CLEAR]. The current track will be memorised. Press [6, USB] to resume play. OR Press [7, CLEAR] again to clear the memory. Press [4, / REW] or [, OR Press the numeric buttons. Press [5/, ALBUM]. / FF].

You are able to check the USB devices remaining recording time before or during recording. Press [DISPLAY]. Note: For ALBUM DEL, only 999 tracks in albums which contain more than 1000 tracks will be erased. To erase the selected album, repeat steps 2 to 6.
Note: During recording, the remaining time displayed is an estimation of the current recording mode.

This function allows you to erase unwanted tracks quickly and easily.

Troubleshooting guide

Before requesting service, make the following checks. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the solutions indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, consult your dealer for instructions.

Common problems

When the unit is in standby mode, the display lights up and changes continuously. No response from the unit even though it has been turned on. No response when remote control buttons are pressed. Distorted sound or no sound. Turn off the demo function. If you set the clock, demo function will be turned off automatically. Press [y/l] for more than 10 seconds to turn off the unit. Alternatively, unplug the AC mains lead and plug it in after a lapse of a few seconds. Turn the unit on again. Check that the batteries are installed correctly. Turn the volume up. Turn off the unit, determine and correct the cause, then turn the unit on again. It may be caused by straining of the speakers through excessive volume or power, and using the unit in a hot environment. An AC mains lead or uorescent light is near the unit. Keep other appliances and cords away from the unit. Check the content. Only MP3 format les can be played. Incorrect operation performed. Read the instructions and try again. You are not able to select other playback source (example: radio, USB and etc.) or press [4, 4 / REW] or [, 3 / FF] during recording. Stop the recording function. You plugged the AC mains lead in for the rst time or there was a power failure recently. Set the time. Check and correct the speaker cords connection. If this does not x the problem, consult the dealer. There is a power supply problem. Consult the dealer.

A humming sound can be heard during play. NO PLAY ERROR is displayed. ERROR is displayed during recording. : appears on the display during standby mode. F61 is displayed.

F76 is displayed.

Playing the discs
Incorrect display or play will not start. You have not inserted the disc correctly; insert it correctly. Disc may be dirty. Wipe it clean. Replace the disc if it is scratched, warped, or non-standard. Condensation has formed: Wait 1 to 2 hours for it to evaporate. 7
The total number of tracks displayed is incorrect. The disc cannot be read. Distorted sound is heard.
You have inserted a disc the unit cannot play; insert one it can. You have inserted a disc that has not been nalized or completely formatted.
VBR is displayed instead of the remaining play time.
The unit cannot display the remaining play time for variable bit rate (VBR) tracks.

Using the cassette deck

Poor sound quality. Recording cannot be performed. Clean the heads. If the erasure prevention tabs have been removed, cover the holes with adhesive tape. 23 12

Listening to the radio

Distorted sound or noise is heard. The stereo indicator ickers or does not light. A beat sound is heard.

Use an outdoor antenna.

Turn the television off or move it away from the unit. Switch to either BP 1 or BP 2 when in AM tuner mode. Separate the antenna from other cables and cords.
A low hum is heard during AM broadcast.

Using the USB device

No response when [ REC, TAPE] button is pressed. USB recording stops suddenly. REC ERROR The USB drive or its contents cannot be read. Disconnect the USB device and then reconnect it back. Alternatively, turn the unit off and then back on. Select a suitable recording mode (128 KBPS or 192 KBPS) and resume recording.
The USB drive format or its contents is/are not compatible with the system, NO PLAY is displayed. Unplug the USB device and insert it again. Alternatively, format the USB device and record the desired tracks again and playback the device. The USB host function of this product may not work with some USB devices. USB devices with storage capacity of more than 8 gigabytes may not work in some instances. Large le size or high memory USB ash drive takes longer time to read. The USB device is drawing too much power. Disconnect the USB device. Turn the unit off and then back on. You cannot use high-speed recording while using analogue mode. Change to digital mode or use normal recording. You cannot perform a second high-speed recording. You have to wait until the displayed XX minutes have lapsed prior to performing the next high-speed recording. You cannot perform high-speed recording because the total USB remaining REC (recording) time of the USB device is less than the total time of the music source. Change to a USB device which has the appropriate recording time and perform the highspeed recording again.

Disc trays

Disc tray(s) cannot open. CHGR ERR is displayed. Press [y/I] to release the jammed tray(s) as the unit will switch off. Turn it on again and the tray(s) will initialise to the previous tray(s) condition. If this still does not x the problem, please consult the dealer.
