As with most Panasonic products I have came across, this Plasma Television proved another great addition to Panasonics visual range of products. This was the first plasma television i had purchased. Great Picture - Sharp Colours No Internal Tuner

4,000 Are higher contrast levels better for watching football?

Panasonic TH-42PA20

F YOURE LOOKING FOR A PICTURE WITH STRONG, CRT-LIKE LEVELS OF contrast, then Panasonics flagship plasma television might be just the thing for you. This elegantly designed screen, featuring an integrated tuner and stereo speakers, boasts an insanely high (for a plasma, at least) contrast ratio of 4000:1. In simple terms, the high contrast ratio makes the blacks look blacker and the whites look whiter, and creates an image with far more depth and definition in dark, gloomy areas of the picture. While aptitude in this particular area might seem more important for DVD watching than viewing a football match, its worth noting that the high contrast levels do make a positive difference to the picture in general as well. Plasmas have a tendency to make areas of the picture that should look deep, dark black more of a dim grey colour, but not the Panasonic. Colour reproduction is also strong, and there are few problems with colour banding. The TH-42PA20 doesnt possess any showy picture processing technology in the manner of Pixel Plus or DIST, but it does have a built-in image de-interlacer. This changes the way each frame of an image is scanned on to the screen: while most TVs create each frame using two interlaced fields one for odd and one for even lines this scans each frame whole, from top to bottom, in one continuous pass. So what, you might say. Well, interlaced scanning has several side effects that can prove extremely annoying, and football matches tend to bring them out. The main one is the appearance
of jagged artefacts during movement; these materialize around diagonal lines, resembling little steps. The Panasonics de-interlacer reduces this effect. If youre planning on upgrading to HDTV when it becomes available on these shores in the very near future, then this screen isnt exactly the ideal candidate. Its native display resolution is 852 x 480 pixels, meaning it isnt really designed for a 1080-line image unlike the new Hitachi and Philips 42in screens. You also dont get DVI or HDMI inputs, so theres no scope for an all-digital DVD hook-up. Basic connectivity is decent, though, with a trio of Scarts (two of which are compatible with RGB video) and a component video input providing plenty of sockets for hooking up digital boxes, games consoles, DVD decks and VCRs. PC users can utilise a VGA input. All these sockets are located at the back of the screen itself, as Panasonic has eschewed the separate tuner box route taken by many manufacturers. Home cinema enthusiasts might like to consider opting for Panasonics TH-42PW6, which is the same screen but has no TV tuner and sells for 500 less. It can be customised with optional input boards for composite video, an RGB Scart and a tuner box. It also offers more home cinema-friendly picture tweaks. Overall though, the 42PA20 is one of the better performing plasmas available at the moment. Its easy to use, beautifully designed and image quality is very high, but the lack of connectivity and the low resolution stops us from awarding it the full five stars.
Front AV sockets just like a CRT!
A fine example of a good remote control

What we like about this screen Superb picture quality Compact, stylish design Simple user interface What we dont like about this screen Lack of a DVI or HDMI input Slightly low resolution

We say: Not too bad on the socketry front, but the lack of a DVI input is a bit disappointing.
We say: An onboard Scart input would have been useful, but you can buy an adaptor for the DVI port.
We say: From the ever useful Scart to the high-def compatible component and DVI ports, its a great selection.

Features Looks Picture Sound Value We say: An impressive picture provider that brings cinema-sized visuals into the home. The sound system is not up to the task of movie soundtracks, however. We say: An extraordinarily high contrast ratio and smooth image are the strongest weapons in this nicely designed TVs arsenal; it lacks connectivity flexibility though. We say: It's expensive, but then you get your money's worth in terms of sheer picture brilliance and future-proofed spec. We say: A classy LCD projector at a temptingly low price. It doesnt have the all-round picture quality of the Panasonic, but is a great, slightly cheaper, alternative. We say: A top-notch LCD projector: easy to use, packed with features, well priced and, above all, a great performer. Youd do well to find better for the price.
