Used my 42 inch Panasonic HDTV plasma for about a year. Then the thing shuts off itself after five seconds of viewing. That means. I am using DirectV receiver with S-Video connect to the plasma tv and progress scan for my DVD. I adjusted the brightness to 10 and picture to 15.

Plasma Television - Features

Plasma Home

*Note: Not all features apply to every model; please confirm each model feature by using the specification charts. Advantages of the Plasma Display How the Plasma Display Work A plasma display works much like a fluorescent lamp. It is constructed of two glass panels only 0.1 mm apart, each with its own electrodes. A gas is injected between the panels. When voltage is applied to the electrodes, the gas becomes charged - resulting in what's called the "plasma phenomenon." This generates ultraviolet rays, which strike the red, green and blue phosphors to create the image you see.
Ultra-Thin Size, Light Weight, Large Screen Unlike conventional CRTs or projection TVs, the plasma display is extraordinarily slim relative to the large screen. It's also extremely lightweight. These factors make it ideal for wall-mounted installation.
Wide Viewing Angle A wide viewing angle of 160? both vertically and horizontally lets you enjoy the same vivid, beautiful images from virtually any angle. Free from Magnetic Interference Because plasma displays are not affected by surrounding magnetic fields or the earth's natural geomagnetism, the images always remain natural and beautiful, with no colour irregularities. New HD (High-Definition) Panel
True High-Definition Images (TH-42PX20/TH-50PX20) Panasonic Plasma Displays set the standard for high-definition viewing. HD panels with approximately 1,050,000 (1366 x 768) pixels and 790,000 (1024 x 768) pixels capture all the beauty of HDTV broadcasts and other HD image sources. They support all major HDTV and EDTV standards, including 1080i, 720p and 480p, and fully reproduce high-definition pictures from 720p HDTV signals.

New Asymmetrical Cell Structure Panel The use of a new front protection glass filter and new phosphors greatly improves the colour purity of blues and reds, a weakness in previous plasma displays. This helps achieve pure, rich, natural colouration that exceeds CRT displays and approaches European EBU standards for high-definition TV. The asymmetrical arrangement of the red, blue and green cells results in a dramatically improved light-emitting balance of the three primary colours. This reproduces purer whites while maintaining a high level of brightness.
Super Real Black Drive System (TH-37PA20/TH-42PA20) Conventional plasma displays tend to illuminate blacks, which lowers the contrast. In Panasonic Plasma Displays, however, the pre-discharge emission intensity is greatly reduced, and the number of emissions per field is cut from the usual 12 to 1. This dramatically reduces black levels and provides deeper, richer blacks. It also achieves the industry's highest contrast, with a 4000:1 contrast ratio.
Plasma Reality Technology Panasonic's ongoing development of "Plasma Reality Technology" is part of our pursuit of ultimate reality in image reproduction. Plasma Reality Technology is a synergetic group of picture-enhancing technologies - including the Real Black Drive System, Advanced Plasma AI, and Real Gamma Correction - that lift plasma display image quality to an entirely new level by dramatically boosting brightness, contrast and gradation.

Real Gamma Correction The new Real Gamma Correction technology has enabled the industry-first reproduction of 1536 shades of gradation in a high-definition plasma display. By optimizing the gradation in each scene, this technology results in far better reproduction of the low-light portions of the image, a weakness in many conventional plasma displays. Advanced Plasma AI (Adaptive Brightness Intensifier) The Advanced Plasma AI increases the discharge cycles for dark scenes, and produces extremely precise control of the brightness level. The result is extremely vivid whites with unprecedented brightness.
XGA Resolution Featuring native XGA resolution, certain models can display personal computer signals ranging from VGA and SVGA to XGA mode. They also support compression display of SXGA and UXGA signals. Progressive Cinema Scan (3:2 Pulldown) Movie film consists of a series of still images viewed at 24 frames-per-second. On TV broadcasts or videotapes, these images are converted to interlaced signals at 30 frames-per-second. The Panasonic Plasma Display detects this conversion and uses still-image processing for each individual image to achieve clear, smooth-flowing images with a level of detail that closely approaches that of the original film. 3-Dimensional Progressive Scan The 3-Dimensional Progressive Scan greatly boosts the precision of the progressive scan conversion. This eliminates flicker in still images and minimizes jagged diagonal edges in moving pictures, resulting in crisp, natural edges and greatly improved resolution. Panasonic Plasma Displays reproduce all input signals in the progressive format, virtually elimination the line flicker that can occur when displaying in the interlace scan format.
