Active Light Control

Active Light Control is circuitry, which automatically detects the brightness levels of the input signal and adju backlight accordingly in real-time. The screen provides maximum brightness that's up to 1.2 times greater than conventional systems, while it's minimum brightness during dark scenes is about one half of conventional level result is a greatly expanded dynamic range from black to white peak, with crisp, natural pictures that assure dy viewing.

Active System Control

Active System Control dynamically adjusts the video signal according to the image contrast. Working in tande Active Light Control, it adds greater brightness to bright scenes and brings more depth to dark ones.

he TX-22LT2 LCD actually formed part of Panasonics 2002 product range. Such is the popularity of this 22in TV that it has been continued and, because its getting on a bit, the price has plummeted to a bargainous 1,500 (from robertsons-online.co.uk, as we went to press). The Pannys looks have stood the test of time. Its a jaw-dropping piece of kit, with a super-sexy frame surrounding the 16:9 screen and a slightly separated speaker section. Underneath is a circular stand that completes the stylish look. The screen swivels on this, and also tilts back 15. On the back, youll find an enticing selection of connections. There are two Scart sockets, one of which accepts RGB video, alongside S-video, composite and stereo audio in/out. There are no PC or component inputs, however. Our only moan is that the connections are downward-facing, and quite tricky to access. Such awkwardness doesnt permeate the onscreen menus, which are tremendously easy to use. The ultra-efficient auto tuning mode takes away the hassle of manual tuning, while setup menus are

very attractive and logically sequenced. Plenty of picture adjustments are on hand, including presets, a comb filter, and AI which optimises the picture by detecting the light conditions of the room. Sound features include a wholly unnecessary concert hall effect and individual bass and treble settings. 4:3 and 16:9 material can be correctly displayed by using the various aspect ratio settings. The best picture results are achieved using the RGB Scart input. DVDs look magnificent. Impressive colour and black level reproduction combines to create deep and satisfying pictures. Peak whites are dazzling, but dont flare untidily at the edges. Pictures are also precise, and dont suffer from smudging on fast movement. TEST SCENE

While clean sources look fabulous on the TX-22LT2, it does have a knack of exposing flaws. For example, digital picture blocking (like you get on digital TV pictures) is exaggerated, and you shouldnt even think about watching VHS tapes on this screen. Pictures from the analogue tuner are acceptable, with strong colours and detail, but again the they expose the shortcomings of this noisy source. Sonically, this TV is an absolute treat, despite only having a 2x9W power output. Audio is smooth and fluid and theres more bass than youd expect to hear from a 22in LCD TV yet it doesnt quite live up to the standards set by Sharps sets. While Sharps LC-22HV2E has claimed top spot in the 22in LCD league, Panasonics set isnt far behind. Its arguably better-looking, and there isnt much between them in terms of performance except perhaps that Sharp is better at hiding shortcomings on lower quality sources. But in terms of looks, connectivity and FURTHER INFO features, the TX-22LT2 is a must-have. WHC
