Preventive Measures Should Not Be Abandoned
A PROBLEM concerning the control of infectious diseases arises rl. frequently through the introduction of new methods. These have a tendency to displace old tried methods of control. The owner is looking always for something easy to apply and inexpensive, and too often is influenced to abandon methods which have been applied formerly. Bang's disease has been controlled with a considerable degree of success through the application of serological tests and the elimination or segregation of reactors. This method is somewhat cumbersome and when many infected animals are found in a herd considerable economic loss results. There is a tendency among owners to believe that calfhood vaccination will control and eliminate infection and requires only widespread application to eradicate the disease from the country. Veterinarians know, however, that vaccination is of value principally as a supplement to'older tried methods and should in no way replace them. Streptococcal mastitis is controlled relatively easily if the infected animals are discovered and placed at the end of the milking row. The introduction of chemotherapeutic measures has unfortunately caught the fancy of owners and they are inclined to believe that mastitis would no longer be a problem if these substances were administered. Veterinarians, however, are aware that these new measures are but supplemental to older tried ones and that the elimination of this infection from dairy herds cannot be brought about by the widespread application of these drugs. These two examples indicate a serious problem which a veterinarian must face, and because of this he must conduct a campaign of educati'on among his clients in addition to giving professional service. Practitioners, veterinary inspectors and laboratory workers should do everything in their power to bring about a better understanding of the practical use of newer methods, pointing out that they do not replace preventive measures but rather are supplemental to them.

Ontario Research Foundation
THE FOLLOWING excerpts are taken from the 1943 report of the Ontario Research Foundation: "Research in the pathology laboratory was continued during 1943 on problems associated with Ascaris lumbricoides infection (the large round worm of hogs). The experimental work, as in previous years, was carried out with guinea pigs. Further information was obtained relative to an understanding of the resistance produced in these animals by infection with this parasite. Additional work is being carried out to confirm some of these results and the evidence obtained thus far points to the following tentative conclusions: Guinea pigs remain partially resistant in to infection for several weeks. The liver to such animals appears to act as a barrier the migration of the parasites through the body. "There was limited time to continue the investigations begun a year ago on the blood parasites of ruffed grouse. Dr. Fallis was granted leave of absence to enable him to take advantage of the opportunity of spending three months studying Tropical Medicine at Tulane University and in the field in Guatemala. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the assistance of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Markle Foundation which made this study possible. It proved a rich experience, particularly with regard to a knowledge of parasitic diseases. That experience emphasized the importance of parasitic diseases of man, and other animals, in global economy. No further justification for a study of these is needed than a knowledge of the fact that millions die annually from malaria alone, and several hundred times this number are sick with the disease.
