| The job, she borrowed my Pentax MZ-5N. The results were breathtaking. I would certainly recommend a Pentax as a good brand to go for especially their digital ranges which are extremely well built. | |

The New Flagship of Pentax 35mm SLR Cameras Offers the Perfect Harmony of Performance and Maneuverability
The Pentax MZ-S is designed to ensure optimum performance in a wide variety of photographic situations, so its users can produce images exactly the way they intended. Its hybrid control system combines the benefits of swift, multi-functional digital operation with the advantages of user-friendly, easy-to-maneuver analog operation. It incorporates a host of advanced features which are designed to simplify complicated photographic techniques, including a sophisticated autofocus system and a versatile flash system. All these features are packed into an innovatively designed, highly maneuverable body. The Pentax MZ-S is today s most technologically advanced 35mm SLR camera, offering unmatched maneuverability.
Auto flash
Stored in the pentaprism section, the built-in auto flash offers reliable TTL (Through-TheLens) operation and a variety of user-friendly features, including red-eye reduction function, as well as programmed flash mode in which both aperture and shutter speed are automatically selected.
Film winding
Select dial Exposure mode button LCD panel
The built-in film winder automatically advances the film by a single frame or consecutively at the speed of approximately 2.5 frames per second, then rewinds it at the end. It also provides a film loading error warning and an end-of-film warning. The electronic self-timer can delay shutter release by two or 12 seconds. The two-second mode can be used like a cable switch since the mirror is automatically locked at the top for a vibration-free shutter release. The photographer can also take advantage of the creative multi-exposure function to produce eye-catching images.
A drastically slanted control panel
The MZ-Ss top panel is slanted 30 degrees toward the photographer, so that all the settings can be confirmed at a quick glance with a slight shift of the eye from the viewfinder.

On-the-film data imprinting
In addition to data imprinting of date or day and time in the image area using an optional data back, the MZ-S allows the photographer to imprint important photographic data such as total number of film rolls, ISO film speed, information of imprinting density, exposure mode, metering mode, shutter speed, aperture value, and exposure compensation value, directly onto the films blank area.
An instant shift of exposure modes
The photographer can select the desired exposure mode (Programmed AE, Aperture-Priority AE, Shutter-Priority AE and Metered Manual) using the select dial for shutter-speed control and the lens aperture ring for aperture setting. The manually selected shutter speed can be quickly shifted back to computer-selected speed with a single press of the exposure mode button. Vital photographic data is displayed in the LCD panel (with an EL illuminator), which is conveniently positioned inside the select dial.

Rigid magnesium-diecast body
The major components of the MZ-Ss body housing, such as top, bottom and front panels and flash section, are made of magnesium diecast material. As a result, the MZ-S offers outstanding reliability and durability even under most demanding conditions.
More distinguished features
AE lock button
Interchangeable Natural-Bright-Matte focusing screens for a clear, bright viewfinder image. The MZ-S comes with the standard GF-60 AF Frame Matte screen. The optional GG-60 Cross-Lined Matte screen is also available. Electronic depth-of-field preview. Illuminated lens mount index for easy lens changes in the dark. Diopter adjuster to match the viewfinder image to the photographers eyesight.
Simple-to-use exposure compensation and auto bracketing
The exposure compensation dial on the left shoulder offers the benefits of simple analog operation. This dial allows the photographer to easily couple exposure compensation with auto bracketing and to confirm the resulting auto bracketing values at a quick glance.
In combination with the Auto Bracketing function, you can take pictures at 0EV, -1EV and -2EV automatically.

Pentax Functions
These 19 custom-adjustable functions allow the users to customize the MZ-S to their liking:
Activation or termination of audible PCV signals. Selection of four different program lines. Number of auto bracketing frames (two, three or five frames). Order of auto bracketing frames (0 basis, ascending order or descending order). Selection of autoexposure and autofocus correlation (priority of metered values in multi-pattern metering). Activation or termination of a link between autofocus lock and exposure lock functions. A sensitivity level of the film. Selection of focus point follow-up function (adjacent focus point is activated or not when the middle point cannot confirm in-focus). Permission or prevention of shutter release before the built-in flash is fully recharged. Selection of the built-in flashs function in the wireless remote control mode (use as a main flash or controller when combined with the optional AF360FGZ flash unit). Selection of the LCD illuminator buttons function in the wireless remote control mode (no pre-emission, use for test emission or use for modeling emission when combined with the optional AF360FGZ flash unit). Selection of the film leaders handling during film rewind (complete rolling into the cartridge, or leaving the leader out of the cartridge when the film is rewound at the end or in mid-roll). Selection of rewind operation at film end (rewind is started automatically or manually). Selection of the self-timers operation time (two or 12 seconds). Selection of an imprinting density for on-the-film data recording (from four levels). Selection of the functions with a half press on the shutter release button (both the metering and autofocus systems are activated, or only the metering system). Selection of the Select dials turning direction. Selection of the lens mount indexs illuminator (turned on or off). Setting of the delay time of a shutter release and the signal reception stand-by time when using an infrared remote controller. (These functions are available only when the optional BG-10 battery grip is mounted on the MZ-S).
-1EV exposure compensation
Acclaimed six-segment multi-pattern metering
SAFOX VII with wide focus frame
The MZ-Ss new six-point autofocus system offers a wide focus frame, so the photographer can capture subjects in crisp focus even when positioned far away from the center of the image field. It offers a choice of AF Single, AF Continuous and Manual focusing. In addition to a conventional half press of the shutter release button, the photographer can also use the AF lock button to activate or lock the focus system. The MZ-Ss advanced six-segment multi-pattern metering system ensures accurate exposure control even under complicated lighting conditions. Using the metering mode switch on the top panel, the photographer can also select the center-weighted or spot metering mode with great ease. The AE lock button on the back panel locks the exposure settings instantly, while the exposure compensation dial on the left shoulder offers quick, easy exposure compensation.
Full-information viewfinder display
The viewfinder display offers primary photographic data at the bottom, and exposure-compensation data and a manual exposure pointer along the right side. As a result, the photographer can concentrate on framing and shutter opportunities without taking the eye from the viewfinder. The display even comes equipped with an illuminator for shooting at night or in the dark.
Manually selectable focus point
In the autofocus mode, the camera pinpoints the focus on the closest subject. For special applications, however, the photographer can select one of the six focus points using the AF point selector and the select dial. The selected focus point is indicated at the bottom of the viewfinder.
Electronic shutter with a top speed of 1/6000 second
The electronically controlled focal-plane shutter offers shutter speeds from 1/6000 to 30 seconds with a flash synchronization at 1/180 second. Its wide shutter-speed range and reliable operation are especially useful in specialized applications.
