Pentax Unveiling the smc Pentax-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR

Hoya Corporation Pentax Imaging Systems Division is finally launching another weather-sealed lens for their cameras, the smc Pentax-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR that is capable of covering both sensors, namely the digital format and the analog Pentax cameras. One more release like this and I am willing to take into account the weather-sealing of Pentax cameras as a relevant feature. Now, let's get back to the lens itself, and see that it has a high-grade chipped aluminum barrel design, while the exterior has been noticeably improved, as compared to the existing D FA-series in order to provide a more elegant and exclusive appearance (well, Pentax is always about showing off features, not necessarily taking pictures, if I am to be mean a little). Leaving the design aside, the internals were also improved, namely the whole mechanism of the focusing ring, that was upgraded for a better and seamless manual-focus operation. Sadly, digital cropped cameras are not so good at manual focusing unless the ambient light is more than sufficient, even if Pentax has the largest viewfinders in this class. As I said, this is also weather sealed, as to complete the Pentax K20d, K7 and others, with a simplified weather-resistant construction that minimizes (oops?! minimizes instead of stops?) the intrusion of water and dust into the lens barrel. That makes this ideal for shooting in the rain, as well as in scenarios when a spray or splash is imminent, when mounted on a weather sealed Pentax body. The diaphragm was not forgotten either, receiving a rounded shape for a smoother bokeh and, come to think about it, the very first Pentax lens with a completely rounded diaphragm blade. Optical formula is nine elements arranged in eight groups, with an eight-blade diaphragm, a 30cm minimum focusing distance and 1:1 magnification. Pricing is accordingly with the other Pentax FA lenses, namely at $1,109.18.
