At the heart of any true sports car is a willing and responsive engine. One which assures the driver of exhilaration on the command of the right foot. Free-revving and free-running. The 206 CC is blessed with two such engines. Twin overhead camshafts, 16-valves, cross-flow aluminium heads, hydraulic tappets these are performance items. Both engines effortlessly scale the rev range while also producing an abundance of useful torque sheer pulling power throughout their operating range. A delight to drive. The 1.6-litre produces an eager 80 kW of power at 5,750 rpm and a maximum 147 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The GTi-spec 2.0-litre is simply awe-inspiring in its willingness 100 kW at 6,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque at 4,100 rpm get you from A to B very, very enthusiastically. Because of their clever air intake, exhaust system and camshaft design, both engines meet the strict Euro 3 anti-pollution standards without having to resort to add-on mechanical devices. Constant monitoring of that environmental performance (against European On-Board Diagnostic criteria) is carried out by the injection computer utilising information provided by two oxygen probes situated on either side of the catalytic converter.
