nstead of getting mad about the fact that high-definition TV is not available in the UK, get even or rather, get PixelPlus. With this feature, some Philips TVs can effectively quadruple the resolution of any picture from any source. You really do see more. But are you, in reality, simply seeing more rubbish? Aesthetically, the 32PW9527 is the least overtly stylish TV in this test, with only the unusual smallness of its footprint to recommend it. Another commendable touch is a slot where you are able to attach the broadcasting section of an optional FM surround sound kit. This delivers a proper rear soundstage but without the need for cables. The effects of PixelPlus on Mulholland Drive are absolutely awesome. Faces seem to have more pores, the scary bloke behind Winkies seems to have extra bits of grime on him, the womans corpse seems so defined you could almost reach out and touch it. er, which is all good news, we assure you!
hy do PC obsessives have such poor hygiene and social skills? Because they have to satisfy their net-surfing, chat-rooming and gaming urges by couping themselves up in a bedroom morning, noon and night. Which makes you wonder if they shouldnt make Samsungs PC-compatible 32Z48D which lets you use your PC in the more communal environment of the living room available on the NHS. As well as being PC-friendly, the 32Z48D is distinguished by Pro-Logic surround sound complete with its own rear speakers. If you already own a DVD player and are happy to miss out on true 5.1 digital surround in favour of analogue Pro-Logic, this is a viable alternative to a home cinema system. The 32Z48D is pretty easy on the eye, sporting a tidy two-tone silver finish on a fashionably minimalistic chassis. Its a pig to use, though. The remote and onscreen menus suck, and the instruction manual makes Mulholland Drives impenetrable anti-narrative look like a Beatrix Potter story.
Cheap and cheerful True colours
Other traditional Philips strengths such as stunningly vibrant colours, awesome contrast and cunning digital processing are also on full show. The only grievance concerns the motion-smoothing processing, which occasionally makes rapid movements seem twitchier than Mulhollands contract killers trigger finger. But the 32PW9527s good picture points far outweigh its bad ones. It boxes above its weight sonically, too, coming in second only to the Loewe in its handling of the infamous Silencio Club scene. Theres power, definition and bass in spades and the situation only gets better if you add the rear speakers. The 32PW9527 isnt the prettiest TV here but what beauty it lacks on the outside, it more than compensates Ratings Picture #########$ for on the inside, making it a bona fide Style #######$$$ TV megastar. Theres plenty of vibrancy to the way it presents Mulhollands colours, plus an abundance of fine detail perfect during the corpse discovery scene! Contrast levels are good, too, though, occasionally, digital processing artefacts dampen the impact worse when youre not using progressive scan mode. PC pictures look sharp even though the screen only gives you 640 x 480 resolution. The negatives give a slightly unauthentic look to colours, sporadic dotty and moiring interference, and haloing around stark edge contrasts. The 32Z48Ds surround sound capabilities work well with the Mulholland soundtrack. The TVs five speakers share the load much better than an ordinary Nicam set, leaving breathing space for bass and dialogue even when Lynch turns his rumbleometer up to 11.
