The Philips 740 DVDVR is a lemon, it worked for us for 9 months, then,out of the blue... it just stoped working,like nothing...

My hard disc recorder has been in the shop 4 times in 6 months, and now it is not working again. I will never buy a philips product again. The Philips 740 DVDVR is a lemon, it worked for us for 9 months, then,out of the blue... it just stoped working,like nothing...

Basic Connections

G Please refer to the instruction books of your TV,VCR, Stereo System or other devices as necessary to make the best connections. G Make one of the following connections, depending on the capabilities of your existing equipment. The following guidelines are options for the best picture and sound quality available on your DVD/VCR. Picture
Connecting to a TV 1 Connect the antenna or cable to the AERIAL

of your DVD/VCR.

2 Connect the DVD/VCR (AV1 TV) on the
DVD/VCR to the corresponding connector on the TV. Note: Ensure that the TV indication on SCART cable is connected to the TV set and DVD indication on SCART cable is connected to the DVD/VCR. If your TV is not equipped with a SCART input, you can select the following connection: If your TV has a S-Video input connector, Connect the antenna or cable to the AERIAL of your DVD/VCR. Connect the S-Video out on the DVD/VCR to the S-Video in on the TV. Connect the ANALOG AUDIO OUT on the DVD/VCR to the Left and Right audio in on the TV.

AUDIO RECEIVER

External Input Mode (for VCR features)
To receive the signal from an external input (decoder, video camera, another VCR etc.), connect to the AV2 (DECODER) socket, and enter 002 with numerical key pads button to appear AV2 on the TV screen. If you use the AV1 (TV) socket, enter 001 with numerical key pads button to appear AV1 on the TV screen. If you use the front AUDIO/VIDEO input jacks, enter 003 with numerical key pads button to appear AV3 on the TV screen.
Inserting batteries into the Remote Control 1 Open the battery cover. 2 Insert batteries (AA size) with the correct 3
polarity as indicated by the + and - symbols inside the battery compartment. Close the cover.
COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO IN OPTICAL DIGITAL AUDIO IN
CAUTION! Remove batteries if they are exhausted or not to be used for a long time. Do not use old and new or different types of batteries in combination. Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed off properly and kept away from children.

Using the Remote Control

G Direct the remote control at the remote sensor of the DVD/VCR. G Do not drop the remote control. G Do not leave the remote control near extremely hot or humid place. G Do not spill water or put anything wet on the remote control.
Playable Video Cassette Tapes
Philips Consume Electronics recommends that only video cassette tapes that have the VHS mark and High Quality (HQ) system is compatible with this DVD/VCR.This DVD/VCR has an Automatic Head Cleaner. Recording Prevention Video cassette tapes have record tabs to ensure recordings are not erased accidentally. To prevent recording, break off the tab with a screw-driver.

Video Channel Setting

Video channel setting will be necessary, if your DVD/VCR is connected to the TV via the coaxial cable. 1 Insert a pre-recorded tape into the DVD/VCR.The DVD/VCR will turn on and start playback automatically. If playback does not start, press the PLAY B button. 2 Select and adjust your TV to channel 36. G If the playback picture appears on the TV screen, continue with step 8. G If channel 36 is employed for broadcasting, or interference lines appear on the picture, the RF converter must be set to a different channel between CH22 and CH69. Continue with step 3. 3 Press the MENU button. 4 Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select INITIAL.Then, press the FF g button. 5 Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select RF OUT.Then, press the FF g button. 6 Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select a channel which is not used for broadcasted between channel 22 and channel 69 in your area, then press the FF g button.

2 To allow recording, cover the hole with
cellophane tape. Notes: Use only tapes with VHS mark. Remove any adhesive stick-on notes from the tape before inserting into the DVD/VCR. Periodic maintenance is required to maintain your DVD/VCR performance. Video heads will require replacement after a period of time. Only an authorised service center should perform this service.

Turning on your DVD/VCR

The following steps should only be performed if a power failure occurs or the DVD/VCR is unplugged for more than 30 minutes. Turn on the TV and select the video channel on the TV. Press the VCR button and then the STANDBY-ON button. Press the PLAY B or STOP C button repeatedly to select your desired language.

Set the TV channel to the RF OUT CHANNEL which was selected on the DVD/VCR. A picture from the VCR will appear on the TV screen. If a picture does not appear, repeat steps 3 to 7 using a different channel which is not used for broadcasted. Press the STOP C button to stop the tape. Note: You may also access the RF OUT CH menu by pressing and holding MENU for 3 seconds during power off until the RF OUT CH menu appears.

Automatic Channel Setup

You can programme the tuner to scan only the channels that you can receive in your area. Turn on the TV and select the TV channel to the video channel on the TV. Press the VCR button, then the MENU button. Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select INITIAL, then press the FF g button. Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select CH TUNING, then press the FF g button. Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select AUTO, then press the FF g button.

Setting the Clock
This DVD/VCR incorporates a 24-hour clock. The clock must be set for the Automatic Timer Recording function to operate correctly. If your DVD/VCR is fitted out with PDC and the PDC signal is available in your area, your DVD/VCR can get the current time from your local PDC broadcast. It keeps track of the time constantly referring to the time broadcasted by your PDC broadcast. If you want to use this feature, refer to AUTO CLOCK SETTING in the next section. Manual Clock Setting
Notes: In the steps 5 and 6, you can go back to the item you want to correct by pressing the REW h button. Although seconds are not displayed, they begin counting from 00 when you exit by pressing the MENU button. Use this feature to synchronise the clock with the correct time. When unplugging the power-cord or if there is a power failure for more than 30 minutes, you may have to reset the clock. Auto Clock Setting

3 Turn off the DVD/VCR once by pressing the
STANDBY-ON button. G The clock will appear on the TV screen when you turn on the DVD/VCR again. Notes: Channel Presetting must be set before the Auto Clock is set. The DVD/VCR refers to the channel which was memorised into position 01. The PDC channel must therefore be set to position 01. The clock cannot be set automatically if you are not receiving a channel that carries a time signal in your area. In this case, set the clock manually. Once the auto clock setting is performed, the DVD/VCR will correct the current time by receiving PDC broadcasts whenever you turn off the DVD/VCR. The DVD/VCR will correct the current time automatically at 8:00. Between 23:00~1:00, the AUTO CLOCK function does not work even if the DVD/VCR power is turned off.

Changing the Language 5

If you want to change the language used on the TV screen menus, follow the steps below. Press the VCR button, then the MENU button. Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select INITIAL, then press the FF g button. Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select LANGUAGE, then press the FF g button. Press the PLAY B or STOP C button to select your desired language. Press the MENU button.

Note: When playing a S-VHS format, you cant get the high resolution picture and noise lines may appear on the picture. A Status Display

To check the Counter, or Clock & Channel number, press the DISPLAY button. If the display shows an abnormal reading; When power is off, press the RESET button on the bottom of the DVD/VCR with the tip of a pen etc.The DVD/VCR will reset the all setting for VCR features including timer recordings, the clock and the language settings. G For weekly recording :To record a TV programme at the same time on the same channel every week.While the month digit is flashing, press the PLAY B or STOP C button repeatedly to select W-MO (Example: every monday). 5 For once-only recording only : Press the PLAY B or STOP C button repeatedly until your desired day appears. 6 Press the PLAY B or STOP C button repeatedly until the relevant start hour appears. Next, enter the minute digit. 7 Press the PLAY B or STOP C button repeatedly until the relevant end hour appears. Next, enter the minute digit. 8 Press the PLAY B or STOP C button repeatedly until the relevant channel number appears. 9 Press the PLAY B or STOP C button repeatedly until your the desired tape speed appears. 10Press the FF g button Programme 1 is now completed. 11Press the MENU button to exit. 12Press the TIMER button to activate the timer.

One-Touch Recording

G This feature allows you to set an immediate time recording between 30 minutes to eight hours long. 1 Place the DVD/VCR in VCR mode and VCR position. 2 Select a recording speed (SP, LP) with the SPEED button. 3 Put a recordable tape in the cassette compartment. 4 Press the VCR button, then the P +/ or numerical key pad buttons to select the channel to be recorded. 5 Press the REC button repeatedly until the desired recording length appears on the screen. a Recording starts immediately.
6 To stop an OTR at any time, press STOP C
button. G To cancel the OTR but continue recording, press the REC button repeatedly until G mark appears in the TV screen. 7 When the OTR finishes, the DVD/VCR will switch to DVD mode automatically.

Hint for Timer Recording

G If there is a power failure or the DVD/VCR is unplugged for more than 30 minutes, the clock setting and all timer settings will be lost. G If a tape ends during TIMER RECORDING, the DVD/VCR will stop, eject the tape, and switch to the DVD mode automatically as the TIMER light blinks. (If the DVD power is off, the DVD/VCR will become the STANDBY status). G If a tape is not in the DVD/VCR or does not have a record tab, the TIMER light flashes and timer recording will not operate. Please insert a recordable tape. G When timer recordings are set, the TIMER light will come on.To use the DVD/VCR as usual until the time for the recording, press the TIMER SET button so that the TIMER light disappears. Press the DVD/VCR Button to choose VCR or DVD modes, then continue with the other features as described in this manual.
SHOWVIEW Guide Channel Set
First, fill in the boxes below: Write your local channel numbers in "VCR Channel" column, corresponding "TV-Station" and "GUIDE Channel" columns, using see your TV guide magazine or the TV listings of your local newspaper.
Now, compare the channel numbers you have written in the GUIDE Channel and VCR Channel columns.You must set all of these channel numbers that don't match using the following procedure before you programme the automatic timer recording using the SHOWVIEW system. G This setting only needs to be set once, but must be done again if you use this DVD/VCR in another area by moving it.

Timer Recording using the SHOWVIEW System
You can programme the timer using the SHOWVIEW numbers that are printed in TV guide magazine.You can set seven programmes to record. Notes: If the SHOWVIEW number is not available, it will be cleared automatically when you press the SHOWVIEW button. Enter the correct SHOWVIEW number and press the SHOWVIEW button again. If the SHOWVIEW number flashes when you press the SHOWVIEW button, this means that the SHOWVIEW number you entered was incorrect or the timer recording you just programmed and another timer recording overlap. The DVD/VCR allows you to select a language during DVD disc (if multi language available) playback. Press the DVD button, then press the AUDIO button during playback. Press the AUDIO button repeatedly to select your desired language.

The DVD/VCR allows you to select a language for subtitle during DVD disc (if available) playback. Press the DVD button, then press the SUBTITLE button during playback. To turn off subtitles, press the { / B or SUBTITLE button repeated until OFF appears.

Some DVD discs contain scenes which have been shot simultaneously from various angles. Press the DVD button, then press the ANGLE button during playback. Press the ANGLE button repeatedly to select your desired different angle appears on the right of the angle display.
Changing the On-Screen Display
Password Parental Control limits the disc viewing that exceed your settings with a password or playback will stop. The Parental Control feature allows you to prevent discs from being played by you children or to have certain discs played that alternative scenes. Press the DVD button, then press the SETUP button during playback is stopped.

Parental Level Parental Level allows you to set the rating level of your DVD discs. Playback will stop if the discs ratings exceed the level you set. Press the DVD button, then press the SETUP button during playback is stopped. Press the K or L button to select PARENTAL, then press the OK button. Enter your four-digit password. Press number 1 button to select PARENTAL LEVEL.

Use markers to memorise your favourite places on a disc. Press the DVD button, then press the SEARCH MODE button three times during playback. a The display screen and Markers will appear on the TV screen. Press the { or B button to select 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 and ensure that NOT SET appears in the display. When reaches the desired point, press the OK button. a The Title or Track and elapsed playing time will appear in the TV screen. To return to the Marker later, press the SEARCH MODE button three times during playback and the { or B button to choose the desired marker, then press the OK button. Audio Setting

Choose the appropriate Audio settings for your equipment as it only affect during the playback of DVD discs of the DVD/VCR. Press the DVD button, then press the SETUP button during playback is stopped. Press the K or L button to select AUDIO, then press the OK button. Press the K or L button to choose the below items and press the OK button repeatedly to turn the setting ON or OFF. Dynamic Range Control (DRC): To compress the range of sound volume. Dolby Digital: If you connected the DVD/VCR to a stereo with Dolby Digital compatible. MPEG: If you connected the DVD/VCR to an MPEG-compatible stereo. DOWN SAMPLING: Press OK, then K or L to select AUTO, 48kHz or 96kHz. Press OK again to confirm selection. Select 96kHz if the disc was recorded in PCM 96kHz, otherwise select 48kHz. Press the SETUP button to exit.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Cabinet G Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives. Cleaning Discs G When a disc becomes dirty, clean it with a cleaning cloth.Wipe the disc from the centre out. Do not wipe in a circular motion. G Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or antistatic spray intended for analogue records. Cleaning the disc lens G After prolonged use, dirt or dust may accumulate at the disc lens.To ensure good playback quality, clean the disc lens with Philips CD Lens Cleaner or any commercially available cleaner. Follow the instructions supplied with the cleaner.

Troubleshooting

WARNING Under no circumstances should you try to repair the system yourself, as this will invalidate the warranty. Do not open the system as there is a risk of electric shock. If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the system for repair. English

Problem

Solution

Check if the AC power cord is properly connected. Check if the TV is switched on. Check the video connection. Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear.This is not a malfunction. Connect DVD/VCR directly to the TV. Make sure the disc is compatible with the DVD/VCR. Adjust the volume. Check that the speakers are connected correctly. Check the digital connections. Check if the audio format of the selected audio language matches your receiver capabilities. Use a DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack when outputting the DTS audio. Check that the SCART cable is connected to the correct device (See Connecting to a TV) Check the disc for fingerprints/scratches and clean with a soft cloth wiping from centre edge. This may happen when you use the disc recorded in the non-seamless manner.This is not a malfunction. Ensure the disc label is facing up. Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc. Reset the unit by switching the player off, then on again. Aim the remote control directly at the sensor on the front of the player. Reduce the distance to the player. Replace the batteries in the remote control. Re-insert the batteries with their polarities (+/ signs) as indicated. To completely reset the player, unplug the AC cord from the AC outlet for 5-10 seconds. Operations may not be permitted by the disc. Refer to the instructions of the disc. Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD to clean the lens before sending the DVD/VCR for repair.

Playback will stop for more than 35 minutes and no button is pressed. Make sure the tape has a record tab. Make sure the DVD/VCR is in VCR position. Check the TV and the DVD/VCR channel are similar. Make sure the recording start and stop times are set correctly. Make sure the tape has a record tab. Make sure the clock is set. The DVD/VCR may not perform or continue a timer recording if the power fails for more than 30 minutes. To enable quick play mechanism, the cylinder will rotate for about five minutes.This is normal. Insert a tape, window side up with the record tab facing you. Gently push on the center of the tape when putting into the DVD/VCR. Make sure the power plug is completely connected to a power outlet. Make sure the tape has a record tab.
The DVD/VCR do not perform a timer
The motor (cylinder) rotates even when tape playback is stopped You cannot insert a tape
You cannot remove a tape DVD/VCR ejects the tape when you press the REC or TIMER button for a timer recording.
