Safety Information
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this device to rain or moisture. Before operating the DVD/VCR, check that the operating voltage indicated on the typeplate (or the voltage indication beside the voltage selector) is identical with the voltage of your local power supply. If not, please consult your dealer. Place the DVD/VCR on a flat, hard and stable surface. There must be sufficient room in front of the player for the disc tray to be opened. In cabinet, allow about 2.5cm (1 inch) of free space all around the player for adequate ventilation. Do not expose your player to extreme of temperature or humidity. If the DVD/VCR is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lens of the disc unit inside the DVD/VCR player. Should this occur, the DVD/VCR would not operate normally. Leave the player on for about one hour with no disc in the DVD/VCR until normal playback is possible. The mechanical parts of the set contain self-lubricating bearings and must not be oiled or lubricated. Never spill liquid of any kind on this unit. If liquid is spilled into the unit, consult qualified service engineer. When the DVD/VCR is switched to Standby mode, it is still consuming some power. To disconnect the system from the power supply completely, remove the AC power plug from the wall socket.

Inserting batteries into the Remote Control
1 Open the battery cover. 2 Insert batteries (AA size) with the correct polarity as indicated by the + and - symbols inside the battery compartment. 3 Close the cover. CAUTION! Remove batteries if they are exhausted or not to be used for a long time. Do not use old and new or different types of batteries in combination. Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed off properly and kept away from children.

Using the Remote Control
Direct the remote control at the remote sensor of the DVD/VCR. Do not drop the remote control. Do not leave the remote control near extremely hot or humid place. Do not spill water or put anything wet on the remote control.
Notes: If the DVD/VCR has been completed AUTO TUNING at this procedure, this initial menu has never shown even if power failure is occured or inserted AC plug again.)
Video Channel Setting
Video channel setting will be necessary, if your DVD/VCR is connected to the TV via the coaxial cable. Insert a pre-recorded tape into the DVD/VCR.The DVD/VCR will turn on and start playback automatically. If playback does not start, press PLAY B. Select and adjust your TV to channel 36. If the playback picture appears on the TV screen, continue with step 8. If channel 36 is employed for broadcasting, or interference lines appear on the picture, the RF converter must be set to a different channel between CH22 and CH69. Continue with step 3. Press DISC/VCR MENU. Press K/L to select INITIAL SET SELECT K L CHOOSE B UP.Then, press B. Press K/L to select RF OUT.Then, RF OUT CH 36 press B twice. Press K/L to select a channel which is not used for broadcasted between channel 22 and channel 69 SET=0-9 END=EXIT in your area, then press B. You can also see the selecting RF channel in the display Press STATUS/EXIT to exit. Set the TV channel to the RF OUT CHANNEL which was selected on the DVD/VCR. A picture from the VCR will appear on the TV screen. If a picture does not appear, repeat steps 3 to 7 using a different channel which is not used for broadcasted. Press STOP C to stop the tape. Note: You may also access the RF OUT CH menu by pressing and holding DISC/VCR MENU for 3 seconds during power off until the RF OUT CH menu appears.
Playable Video Cassette Tapes
Philips Consume Electronics recommends that only video cassette tapes that have the VHS mark and High Quality (HQ) system is compatible with this DVD/VCR.This DVD/VCR has an Automatic Head Cleaner. Recording Prevention Video cassette tapes have record tabs to ensure recordings are not erased accidentally. 1 To prevent recording, break off the tab with a screw-driver. 2 To allow recording, cover the hole with cellophane tape.
Notes: Use only tapes with VHS mark. Remove any adhesive stick-on notes from the tape before inserting into the DVD/VCR. Periodic maintenance is required to maintain your DVD/VCR performance. Video heads will require replacement after a period of time. Only an authorised service center should perform this service.

Automatic Channel Setup
You can programme the tuner to scan only the channels that you can receive in your area. Turn on the TV and select the video out channel on your TV. Press VCR, then DISC/VCR MENU. Press K/L to select TUNER SET UP, then press B. Press K/L to select AUTO TUNING, then press B. PLEASE WAIT The tuner scans and memorizes all the active channels in your START FINISH area. After scanning, the tuner stops on the lowest memorized channel. Press P +/ or numerical key pads to scan through channels you have received.
I cannot switch my TV set to programme number '1' * If you have connected additional devices to socket AV2(DECODER), please disconnect these devices. Because of other connected devices, the TV set could switch to the programme number of the scart socket. 'NO TV SIGNAL' will appear in the TV screen.The DVD/VCR is not receiving a video signal from the TV. Check the plug on the scart cable. Check your TV's operating instructions to see which scart socket is used for video signals. If this does not help, it's not possible to use this function. Please read the section 'Sorting TV channels manually'. 5 Select programme number '1' on the TV. 6 Confirm with B on the DVD/VCR remote control.The DVD/VCR compares the TV channels on the TV and the DVD/VCR. If the DVD/VCR finds the same TV channel as on the TV, then it stores it at 'P01'. 7 Wait until the next number, e.g. 'P:02' appears in the display. 8 Select the next programme number on the TV, e.g. '2'. 9 Confirm with B. 10 Repeat steps 7 to 9 until you have assigned a programme number to all TV channels. 11 To end, press STATUS/EXIT.

You can select programme number 01-99. 6 Press K/L to select CHANNEL, then press B. 7 Press K/L.The DVD/VCR tuner will begin to search up or down automatically.When a channel is found, the DVD/VCR will stop searching and the picture will appear on the TV Screen. You can select desired channel number by using numerical key pads.You must refer to the channel plan and press three digits to select the channel number. (To select channel 24, first press 0 button then press 2 and 4). If this is the channel you want, press B. If you want to remove scrambled signals, press K/L to select DECODER.Then, press B to select [ON]. 8 Press STATUS/EXIT to exit. Note: To confirm that a channel has been added, press the P +/ buttons. You should select the satellite channels to be received by the satellite receiver directly on the receiver itself.
1 Insert a DVD without copyright protection in the tray. 2 Insert a video cassette tape with its erase prevention tab in place. 3 Select the recording speed. Details are at Selecting the recording speed (SP or LP). 4 Enter 004 with numerical key pads to appear DISC on the TV screen. 5 Press RECORD I. 6 Change to DVD operation mode. 7 Press DVD, then PLAY B to begin the playback of a DVD. 8 Press VCR, then STOP C to stop recording.
Programming a Recording (TIMER)
Use a TIMER programming to automatically start and stop a recording at a later time or date.The DVD/VCR will switch to the right programme number and begin recording at the correct time.With this DVD/VCR, you can pre-programme up to eight recordings within a period of one year.To make a programmed recording, your DVD/VCR needs to know: * the date you want to make the recording * the programme number of the TV channel * the start and stop time of the recording * VPS or PDC on or off This information is saved in a TIMER block. What is 'VPS/PDC'? 'VPS' (Video Programming System)/ 'PDC' (Programme Delivery Control) are used to control the start and duration of TV channel recordings. If a TV programme starts earlier or ends later than scheduled, the DVD/VCR will turn on and off at the correct time. What do I need to know about 'VPS/PDC'? Usually the VPS or PDC time is the same than the start time. But if your TV guide shows a VPS or PDC time which is different from the programmes scheduled start time, e.g. 20.10 (VPS/PDC 20.14), you must enter the VPS/PDC time exact to the minute. If you want a start time different from the VPS/PDC time, you must switch VPS/PDC off. 5 The decoded data appears after confirmation.You can go back to change the data. Select the corresponding input field using B or CLEAR. Change the data with numerical key pad. 6 When all inputs are correct, press STATUS/EXIT.The programming information is stored in a Timer block. Switching on 'VPS/PDC' in the 'START' input field Select 'VPS/PDC' using B or CLEAR. Press '1' to switch off 'VPS/PDC' or press '2' to switch on 'VPS/PDC'. 7 Insert a cassette with an intact security tab (unprotected). 8 Press TIMER SET. 'RECORD TIMER' will light up on the DVD/VCR display. English 3 4
Programming a recording (without the SHOWVIEW system)

TIMER LIST If all Timer blocks are in use, FULL will appear on the OSD. 4 Select the desired Timer block with END=EXIT numerical key pads. (The flashing number indicates an empty TIMER block.)
REC (Normal recording) Recording stops when 0:00 is reached. To check time remaining during an OTR Press DISPLAY. To change the recording length during an OTR Press RECORD until the desired length appears. To stop an OTR before recording is finished Press STOP. To cancel the OTR but continue recording Press RECORD repeatedly until REC appears in the upper left corner of the TV screen.
Other Functions
If you want the TV screen to be solid blue when a weak signal is received, set BLUE BACKGROUND to ON.The screen will be blue and the sound will be muted. Or, if you want to receive the weak signal, set BLUE BACKGROUND to OFF. 1 Press VCR, then DISC/VCR MENU. 2 Press K/L to select 'VCR SET UP' , then press B. 3 Press K/L to select 'BLUE BACKSELECT K L CHOOSE B GROUND' , then press B. How to change a programmed recording (TIMER)

Clock Display
This function allows you to switch the VCR display off. It is useful in case you feel disturbed by the display-brightness while watching TV in a dark room. It also reduces the power consumption. 1 Press VCR, then DISC/VCR MENU. 2 Press K/L to select 'VCR SET UP' , then press B. 3 Press K/L to select 'CLOCK DISPLAY' , then press B. 4 Select 'OFF' (no clock display) or 'ON' (clock display on) with B. 5 To end, press STATUS/EXIT.

Hint for Timer Recording
If there is a power failure or the DVD/VCR is unplugged for more than 1 minute, the clock setting and all timer settings will be lost. If a tape ends during TIMER RECORDING, the DVD/VCR will stop, eject the tape, and switch to the DVD mode automatically as the TIMER light blinks. (If the DVD power is off, the DVD/VCR will become the STANDBY status). If a tape is not in the DVD/VCR or does not have a record tab, the TIMER light flashes and timer recording will not operate. Please insert a recordable tape. When timer recordings are set, the TIMER light will come on.To use the DVD/VCR as usual until the time for the recording, press TIMER SET so that the TIMER light disappears. Press DVD/VCR to choose VCR or DVD modes, then continue with the other features as described in this manual. 'PRESS TIMER SET BUTTON FOR TIMER RECORDING' appears on the screen * Press TIMER SET on several minutes before the start of a programmed recording. Error message: 'FULL' If this error message appears after you select 'ONCE', 'DAILY', or 'WEEKLY' on TIMER menu and press B, then all TIMER blocks are already programmed. No more recordings can be programmed. If you want to clear or check a programmed recording (TIMER block),select the programme number on TIMER LIST menu and press CLEAR.
POW ER ON/O FF
1 Press DVD, then TITLE. The title menu will appear. 2 If the feature is not available, symbol may appear on the TV screen. 3 Press Arrow ( L / K / B / s ) to select an item, and OK to confirm selection. Playback will begin at the selected Title.

Calling Up a Menu During Playback
Press DISC/VCR MENU to call up the DVD main menu. Press TITLE to call up the title menu. Note: - Contents of menus and corresponding menu operations may vary between discs. Refer to the manual accompanying the disc for details.
Step by Step Playback
1 During playback, press PAUSE k. Playback will pause and sound will be muted. 2 The disc goes forward by one frame each time PAUSE is pressed. 3 To exit step by step playback, press PLAY B.

Press the appropriate numerical key pads or use Arrow ( L / K / B / s ) to highlight your selection in the DVD main menu and press OK to confirm. Note: - Unless stated, all operations described are based on remote control use. Some operations can be carried out using the menu bar on the TV screen.
Resume
1 During playback, press STOP C. Resume message will appear on the TV screen. 2 Press PLAY B, playback will resume from the point at which playback was stopped. To cancel resume, press STOP C twice. Note: - If you turn the DVD/VCR off, Resume function will be cancelled. - Some Video CDs with PBC function resume playback from the beginning of the track.

1 Press DVD, then DISC/VCR MENU. The DVD main menu will appear. 2 If the feature is not available, symbol may appear on the TV screen. 3 If disc menu is available on the disc, audio language, subtitle options, chapters for the title and other options will appear for selection. 4 Press Arrow ( L / K / B / s ) to select an item, and OK to confirm selection.
1 During playback, press FWDg or REVh repeatedly to select the required forward or reverse speed: x2, x8, x50, x100. For video CDs, the speed is fixed at x2, x8, x30. For audio CDs, the speed is fixed at x16. For MP3, the speed is fixed at x8. 2 To return to normal playback, press PLAY B.
Slow Forward / Slow Reverse
1 During playback, press PAUSE k. 2 Press g or h. Slow motion playback will begin and sound will be muted. 3 Press g or h repeatedly to select the required speed: 1/16, 1/8, 1/2 of the normal playback. 4 To return to normal playback, press PLAY B. Note: - Slow Reverse is not available on video CDs.
The Zoom function allows you to enlarge the video image and to pan through the enlarged image. 1 Press ZOOM during playback. Playback will continue. 2 Press ZOOM repeatedly to select the required zoom factor: x2, x4 or OFF. 3 Use Arrow ( L / K / B / s )to move the zoomed picture across the screen. 4 To exit zoom mode, press ZOOM to OFF. Notes: - Zooming function does not work while disc menu is shown. - x4 zoom is not available on some discs. - only x2 zoom is available on video CDs. REPEAT are available only during playback. Repeat Title / Chapter DVD-V To activate the repeat function, press REPEAT during playback. The repeat mode changes as described below every time you press the button. OFF (repeat off) CHAPTER (current chapter repeat) TITLE (current title repeat) English ALL (entire disc repeat)
1 During playback, press SEARCH MODE three times (CD/VCD: twice) to display the Time Search on the TV screen. 2 Within 30 seconds, enter a desired disc time using numerical key pads. Playback will start at the specified time. 3 Press CLEAR to erase the incorrect input.

You may determine the order in which tracks will play. 1 In stop mode press MODE. The PROGRAM screen will appear. 2 Press L or M to select a track, then press OK. Notes: - While the program is being played back, the STOP C works as follows. - Press STOP C once and then PLAY B again, playback will restart from the point where STOP C was pressed. You can check the MP3 files during playback. 1 Press DISPLAY. The name of the file currently in play will be displayed. 2 Press DISPLAY again to show the track number, the elapsed time, the repeat status, and the playback status at the top of the screen. will be displayed when the repeat play has been selected. T - indicates Track repeat G - indicates Group (folder) repeat A - indicates Disc repeat 3 Press DISPLAY again to exit.
Track Selection
1 Press SEARCH MODE during playback. The FILE LIST will appear. 2 Select a desired track using Arrow (L/K/B/s). Press B when you want to go to the next hierarchy. Press s when you want to go back to the previous hierarchy. 3 Press PLAY B to start playing Notes: - Press SEARCH MODE to EXIT. - Some selections may take a while to be recognized.
Random Playback
This shuffles the playing order of tracks instead of playback in RANDOM the sequence. CD [AUDIO] TOTAL 0:45:In stop mode, press MODE RANDOM PROGRAM twice. -- no indication - RANDOM screen appears. 2 Press PLAY B to start random playback. Notes: - If you like to repeat the current track in the random selection, press REPEAT repeatedly until TRACK appears during playback. If you like to repeat the entire random selection press REPEAT repeatedly until ALL appears during playback.
1 Press MODE twice while playback is stopped. 2 Press PLAY B to play the tracks in random order.
This feature allows you to program a mp3 disc to play in a desired sequence. 1 Press MODE during playback is stopped. The PROGRAM screen will appear. 2 Press K or L to select a track, then press OK, to save it in a program. Press CLEAR to erase the incorrect input. 3 Press PLAY B to start programmed playback.
MP3/JPEG Playback
When a CD with MP3 or JPEG files is inserted in the DVD/VCR, the MP3 or JPEG menu will appear on the TV screen, and number of tracks is displayed on the front panel. 1 In stop mode, press K or L to select the desired group, MP3 track or JPEG file. If a group is selected, press PLAY B or OK to go on to the track selection screen. Press K or L to choose a track, then press PLAY B or OK. If a track is selected, press PLAY B or OK to start playing tracks. Starting from the one youve just chosen the subsequent tracks will be played. Choose FIRST PLAY to start playback from the beginning of the listed tracks. Press TITLE to return to the first item. 2 Press STOP C to stop playback. Notes: - Folders are known as Groups; files are known as Tracks. - MP3 files are accompanied by 3 icon. - JPEG files are accompanied by icon. - Maximum of 255 folders can be recognized. - Maximum of 256 files can be recognized. - Up to 8 hierarchies can be created. This player recommends the use of files recorded at the below specifications: Sampling frequency: 44.1kHz or 48kHz Constant bit rate: 112kbps ~ 320kbps.

Audio Language
The DVD/VCR allows you to select a language during DVD disc (if multi language available) playback. 1 Press AUDIO during playback. 2 Press AUDIO repeatedly to select your desired language. Notes: - Pressing AUDIO may not work on some DVDs with multiple audio languages (e.g. DVDs which allow audio language setting on the disc menu). - Some discs allow audio language setting on the disc menu. (Operation varies between discs, so refer to the manual accompanying the disc.)
Stereo Sound Mode
1 Press AUDIO repeatedly during playback to select between STEREO, L-CH or R-CH. STEREO - both right and left channels are active (stereo) L-CH - only left channel is active R-CH - only right channel is active Note: - If the Virtual Surround setting is ON, the sound mode will be fixed to STEREO, and can not be changed.
The DVD/VCR allows you to select a language for subtitle during DVD disc (if available) playback. 1 Press DVD, then SUBTITLE during playback. 2 Press SUBTITLE repeatedly to select your desired subtitle language. The selected language will be displayed on the display bar at the top of the screen. 3 To turn off subtitles, press SUBTITLE repeatedly until OFF appears. Notes: - Some discs allow subtitle language setting on the disc menu. (Operation varies between discs, so refer to the manual accompanying the disc.) - If the desired language is not shown after pressing SUBTITLE several times, the disc does not have subtitles in that language. - If you choose a Language that has a 3 letter language code, the code will be displayed every time you change the Subtitle language setting. If you choose any other languages,--- will be displayed instead. (Refer to back insidecover.) Parental Control limits the disc viewing that exceed your settings. (with a password or playback will stop.) This feature allows you to prevent discs with alternative scenes from being played by your children. Parental Level Parental Level allows you to set the rating level of your DVD discs. Playback will stop if the discs ratings exceed the level you set. Press SYSTEM MENU in STOP mode. Press B to select CUSTOM, then press OK. Press s or B to select PARENTAL, then press OK. Enter your four-digit password then press OK. Press K or L to select PARENTAL LEVEL, then press OK. Press K or L to select the desired level, then press OK. Press SYSTEM MENU to exit. Notes: - When doing this for the first time, enter any 4 digits. (except for 4737) That number will be used as the password from the second time onward. - To change the password, press K or L to select CHANGE, then press OK. Enter the four-digit pass-word, then press OK. - With some DVDs, it may be difficult to find if they are compatible with parental lock. Be sure to check if the parental lock function operates in the way that you have set. - Record the password in case you forget it. If You Forget the Password Press 4, 7, 3, 7 at step 4. Password will be cleared and parental level will be set to ALL. Proceed the above steps 4-5 again. Control Levels ALL All parental lock is cancelled. Level 8 DVD software of any grade (adult/general/children) can be played back. Levels 7 to 2 Only DVD software intended for general use and children can be played back. Level 1 Only DVD software intended for children can be played back, with those intended for adult and general use prohibited.

Camera Angle
Some DVD discs contain scenes which have been shot simultaneously from various angles.You can change the camera angle when the ( ) icon appears on the screen. 1 Press DVD, then ANGLE during playback. The selected angle will be displayed on the display bar at the top of the screen. 2 Press ANGLE repeatedly to select your desired angle.
Changing the On-Screen Display
You can check information about the current disc by pressing DISPLAY on the remote control. Press DISPLAY during playback to show current Chapter. a The elapsed and remaining playing time of the current chapter will be displayed. Press DISPLAY again to show current Title. a The elapsed and remaining playing time of the current title will be displayed. Press DISPLAY the third time. a The BIT RATE, layer number (if available) and the current repeat setting will be displayed. Press DISPLAY the fourth time to remove the display.
Marker Setup Screen
1 Press DISPLAY during playback, the current Track will be displayed on the TV screen. a The elapsed and remaining playing time of the current total track will be displayed. 2 Press DISPLAY again to show current Total Track. a The elapsed and remaining playing time of the current total track will be displayed. 3 Press DISPLAY the third time to remove the display.
Use markers to memorise your favourite places on a disc. 1 Press SEARCH MODE four times (CD: three times) during playback. The display screen and Markers will appear on the TV screen. 2 Press s or B to select 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 and ensure that - - - - : - - appears in the display. 3 When reaches the desired point, press OK. The Title or Track and elapsed playing time will appear in the TV screen. 4 To return to the Marker later, press SEARCH MODE four times (CD/VCD: three times) during playback and s or B to choose the desired marker, then press OK. Notes: - Opening the disc tray or turning off the power or select AC at step 2 and press OK will erase all Markers. - To clear a marker, using s or B, position the cursor on to the marker number to be cleared and press CLEAR. - You can mark up to 10 points. 5 Press SEARCH MODE or RETURN to exit.

Audio Setting
Choose the appropriate Audio settings for your equipment as it only affect during the playback of DVD discs of the DVD/VCR. 1 Press SYSTEM MENU in STOP mode. 2 Press B to select CUSTOM, then press OK. CUSTOM mode will appear. 3 Press s or B to select AUDIO, then OK to confirm. 4 Press K or L to select the below items, then press OK. DRC (Dynamic Range Control) : To compress the range of sound volume. The default setting is OFF. Dolby Digital : QUICK Set to ON when the player is connected to Dolby Digital Decoder. (ON : Output by Dolby Digital) (OFF : Convert the Dolby Digital to PCM) The default setting is ON. DOWN SAMPLING : Set to ON when outputting in 48kHz. The default setting is ON. When playing disc with copyright Protection If you select OFF, copyright protection will be activated and sound will be down sampled at 48kHz. MPEG : Set to ON when the player is connected MPEG Decoder. (ON: Output by MPEG) (OFF: Convert the MPEG to PCM) The default setting is OFF. 5 Press SYSTEM MENU to exit.

5 Press K or L to select a setting, then press OK. If OTHER is selected in the AUDIO, SUBTITLE or DISC MENU screen, press four-digit number to enter the code for the desired language. (Refer to the language code list on back inside cover). Only the languages supported by the disc can be selected. 6 Press SYSTEM MENU to exit. Note: - Language Setting for Audio and Subtitle is not available with some discs.Then use AUDIO and SUBTITLE. Details are on pages 16-17.
Display Setting
Virtual Surround
You can enjoy stereophonic visual space on your existing stereo system. 1 Press MODE during playback. 2 Press OK to set it 1(Natural effect), 2(Emphasized effect) or OFF. OFF 3 Press MODE or RETURN to exit. Note (for CD play only): - Virtual Surround will not be effective if the sound mode is set to something other than STEREO.
Use markers to memorise your favourite places on a disc. 1 Press SYSTEM MENU in STOP mode. 2 Press B to select CUSTOM, then press OK. CUSTOM mode will appear. 3 Press s or B to select DISPLAY, then OK to confirm. 4 Press K or L to select the below items, then press OK. TV Aspect : QUICK Press K or L for an item selection, then press OK. Select 4:3 LETTER BOX for a black bars appears on top and bottom of the screen. Select 4:3 PAN & SCAN for a full height picture with both sides trimmed. Select 16:9 WIDE if a wide-screen TV is connected to the DVD/VCR. The default setting is 4:3 LETTER BOX. Angle Icon : Press OK repeatedly to turn Angle icon ON or OFF. The default setting is ON. Auto Power Off : Press OK repeatedly to turn Auto Power off ON or OFF. The default setting is ON and it will turn the DVD/VCR to off automatically after 35 minutes of no use. 5 Press SYSTEM MENU to exit. Notes: - Be sure to press SYSTEM MENU, or the setting will not work. - You can also choose the item by pressing the numbers.
