Beautiful, huge, LOTS of inputs, low profile. Some posterization, darks off-color, no discrete inputs on remote.Avoid E-box.

Ambient temperature Plasma Display characteristics
Caution: A video source (such as a video game, DVD, or information channel) which shows a constant non-moving pattern on the monitor, can cause damage to the screen. When your Flat-Monitor is continuously used with such a source, the pattern of the non-moving portion of the game (DVD, etc.) could leave an image permanently on the screen. When not in use, turn the video source off. To prevent or to reduce burn-in of the screen, select a LONG LIFE setting in the OPTION 2 menu. See p. 14. Very incidentally and after a longer period of unuse (approx. 1 year) the screen may display some strange colour deficiencies. This is quite normal for plasma displays and these effects will disappear after the set has been turned on for some time. A plasma display consists of more than 1,2 Million color pixels. It is within industry standards that very few pixels (< 0.001%) may be defective, even for a new set. There is however no reason to doubt about the quality of the set. The plasma display technology operates with rare gases which are being influenced by air pressure. Up to an altitude of 6526ft above sea-level (local air pressure equal or above 800 hPa), the display is functioning fine. Operating the set at a higher altitude (lower air pressure), the picture becomes unstable and the picture performance is deteriorating. The plasma display might then also produce a humming sound. After bringing the set below 6526 ft (local air pressure equal or above 800 hPa) it works fine again. Transportation has no influence. The infrared radiation of the screen may influence the reception sensitivity of other peripherals. Solution: replace the batteries of the remote control or change position of other equipment. E.g. keep away a wireless headphone from within a radius of 4.92 ft. Check if you have selected the correct display mode in your PC. See Table of Signals Supported. Are the supplied cables connected properly? (The power cable to the display, the VGA cables,.) Is your PC switched on? Do you see a black screen and the indicator in front of the monitor lights up green, this means that the display mode is not supported. Switch your VGA source to a correct mode. If your monitor no longer responds to the remote control, the batteries may be exhausted. Switch your monitor off and then on again. Never attempt to repair a defective monitor yourself. Check with your dealer or call a technician. Keep the original packaging to transport the monitor if needed.

If you are unable to view material via the DVI input, this does not necessarily mean the PDP is not functioning properly. With the implementation of HDCP, there may be cases in which certain content is protected with HDCP and might not be displayed due to the decision/intention of the HDCP community (Digital Protection, LLC). Note: While the input signals comply with the resolution listed in the table above, you may have to adjust the position and size of the picture or the fine picture because of errors in synchronization of your computer. When a 1280 dot x 1024 line signal or 1600 dot x 1200 line signal is input to the monitor, the picture will be compressed. This monitor has a resolution of 1365 dot x 768 line. It is recommended that the input signal should be XGA, wide XGA, or equivalent. With digital input some signals are not accepted. The sync may be disturbed when a nonstandard signal other than the aforementioned is input. If you are connecting a composite sync signal, use the HD terminal. *IBM PC/AT and VGA are registered trademarks of IBM, Inc. of the United States.

Technology

Flat TV Technology
Our new Philips Flat TVs have incredible advantages. The biggest one is that they are super slim and offer installation in places that conventional TVs cant go. Two technologies make these thin TVs possible. They are Plasma and LCD. Philips is using both of these exciting technologies in our award winning Flat TV line. Lets look at each in turn.

Plasma

If we were to remove the plasma gas from this illustration, the process you are viewing is not much different from the conventional television picture we have been viewing for over 60 years. The following is how a single red cell inside a Plasma TV makes a red pixel. A surface discharge of an electron passes through the Neon/Xenon gas and strikes the phosphor. The glowing phosphor reflects off the rear glass plate and out the front glass plate creating a red pixel on the screen.
LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
In contrast, the LCD illustration is very different. LCD pictures are based on transmissive technology. The way an LCD panel works is a back light shines through TFTs (Thin Film Transistors) into the Liquid Crystals. In order to make the color red, an electrical charge is applied to the TFT. This causes the Liquid Crystal to twist and shine light from the Backlight into the Color Filter Array creating a red pixel. Now that we understand the basics of these two incredible technologies, lets look at each system more closely to discover the complete benefits of each.

Picture

(Alternate Lighting of Surfaces) Virtually Flicker Free An additional benefit of ALiS technology is that is has significantly less flicker compared with conventional CRT technology. To produce an amazingly sharp and detailed picture on the Philips 32-inch and 42-inch Plasma TVs, Philips utilizes ALiS display technology. ALiS has the ability to reproduce the full 1080i resolution on screen. With the larger 50-inch Plasma display set, Philips will use the more traditional progressive scan display technology.
The 2002 line of Philips Plasma TVs are available with or without speakers. The 42-inch and 50-inch size Plasma displays that include speakers have six total, which output 30 total watts.

What is it?

ALiS is a new method of producing a picture on a Plasma Display Panel or PDP. The Philips 32-inch and 42-inch Plasma monitors are based on the ALiS method of Plasma Display Panels (PDP).

How does it work?

ALiS is based on 3 principles: 1. Odd and Even lines are displayed separately (Interlaced) 2.The non-lighting area between the pixels is used. 3. Odd and Even scan lines are controlled by one pair of display electrodes (Previously done with 3 pairs of electrodes). In the conventional Plasma Display Panel, the space between a pair of display electrodes, being non-light emitting area, was not utilized, but in this new ALiS technology, each display electrode is efficiently utilized, considerably improving brightness and resolution.

Convenience

(FTR9964)

E-Box FTR9964

Basically a Plasma Display Panel is just a giant computer monitor. It must have sources connected to it in order to display a picture. When you sit down in front of a Philips Plasma Display Panel, you expect to see an excellent picture from any source. Well, when connected to the FTR9964, or E-Box, you get just that!
The FTR9964 or E-Box is a separate set top box that connects directly to the Philips Plasma panel with a very high quality shielded true 15-pin VGA type cable.

Odd Lines

Even Lines

Complete Lines

What does it do?
The E-box provides many advantages for picture viewing. They are: 1. Advanced analog picture processing 2.Two Tuner split window PIP 3. Flexible installation

What are the benefits?

Digital Natural Motion No more Smearing of the picture. Natural 3D look. Reproduces smooth movement which makes entire viewing experience more natural. This advanced analog picture processing is great for DVD and broadcast TV.

High resolution By utilizing the non-light emitting area of conventional system as display area, the Plasma Display Panel can display more than 1,000 scanning lines and be classified as High Definition according to the CEA definitions. High brightness By utilizing the non-light emitting area of the conventional system for display area, the brightness with ALiS technology is almost doubled compared to previous models.
Seven (7) Viewing Modes This allows the user the choice of how they want to view the material. The format modes are as follows: 4:3, Movie Expand 14:9, Movie Expand 16:9, Movie Expand 16:9 with subtitling, Super Wide, Widescreen, and Auto Format. Dual Tuner Dual Window PIP Inside the E-Box, is an NTSC (analog) TV tuner. This allows the viewer to watch two shows at the same time with Split Window PIP. Additional A/V Inputs Allows for connection of up to six additional A/V components (including an HD set top box and a progressive scan DVD player).

E-Box Connections

Installation The E-Box may be installed up to 33 feet away from the Plasma display panel. A specially designed VGA type cable connects the E-Box to the Plasma panel. The picture, sound, and infrared control of the E-Box is achieved through the IR port on the Plasma panel. This freedom of control allows the E-Box to be hidden away with the rest of the A/V equipment.

Plasma TV Myths!

What are they?
Of course, with any new technology there are going to be some questions and misunderstandings. Well, here are a few of the more popular myths that surround Plasma TV technology.

MONITOR OUT

The Plasma TV set is a completely sealed unit requiring NO recharging or refilling of the Neon Xenon gas. Once the set has reached the end of its life it should be disposed of properly. The Neon Xenon gas is NOT lethal. The amount of gas used in a Plasma TV is barley enough to fill a thimble. So if for some reason the gas were to leak out, it will NOT harm you. If a plasma set is laid on its end, all the Plasma will NOT run to one side. Plasma TVs do NOT emit any type of harmful waves when turned on. A Plasma display is no more harmful to sit in front of than a regular TV.
Active Control Plus+ Active Control Plus+ is a unique, intelligent, and proactive control system, which continuously measures and analyzes the incoming signal 60 times per second to automatically adjust settings for optimal picture quality. Active Control Plus+ also uses a sensor to adjust for ambient room light, the room gets brighter, so does the picture.

Lifetime

Plasma TV sets are designed to last as long as a conventional television. With normal use, a Plasma TV set will last between eight to ten years.
Active Control Plus+ Mode Shown on 42FD9954
APAC (Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation) When black bars are present on screen (either on the sides or the top and bottom),APAC imperceptibly moves the picture up and down or back and forth helping to prevent the dreaded screen burn-in. Think of APAC as a screen saver for your television.

What makes Philips LCD TVs better than a PC TV?
Moving Video Performance. PC monitors are designed for static images. Having a bright and high contrast picture are important, but being able to process MOVING video is what separates LCD TV products from PC TV displays. At the heart of all Philips LCD TVs is a chipset that optimizes the signal for moving video by minimizing the response time and converting all signals to Progressive Scan. To further help the signal, a very high quality Digital Comb filter is employed to filter out the noise. All this ensures that the video performance in a Philips LCD TV is smooth and natural.
All of the Philips LCD TVs have two high quality stereo speakers with ample wattage to fill the room with sound. To further enhance the audio, all models of Philips LCD Flat TVs have a seven band Graphic Equalizer that allows the user to customize their listening experience.
Thin Size & Portability At two inches thick and eleven pounds for the 15-inch TV and three inches thick and 21 pounds for the 20-inch TV, installation locations that were never considered before like the kitchen or bathroom can be explored. These TVs include the beautifully designed arch table stand, too! High Brightness & Contrast ratio Because of the new installation locations and opportunities, having a bright, colorful picture is important. With these Philips LCD TVs, your images will look awesome in virtually any light situation. Check the included matrix on the back for more specific information. Wide Horizontal & Vertical viewing angle With one of the widest viewing angles for both Horizontal and Vertical viewing, these Philips LCD TVs let you freely move around the room without having to worry about losing image quality. Product Life Philips LCD TVs last up to 50,000 hours (15-17 years) with normal use of eight to ten hours per day. These Philips LCD TVs will be with you well into the future.
