| Satisfied with the unit except......... I purchased this unit as an open box set at Best Buy in 2001. The receiver was in perfect condition. Good Receiver The only problems I have noticed is poor stagiging in the rear speakers - lack of volume too. " A Potent Receiver" This receiver is stunning.... It has raw power.... It has 5 S video inputs/outputs. | |

Sound Enhancement
Dolby Digital Surround Sound - Available on DVD, Laserdisc *, satellite broadcasts. Digital Surround offers the ultimate experience in home theater surround with six discrete channels of digital CD sound. Discrete means that each channel carries its own sound and depending on what happens on screen each speaker plays its own unique role in providing the right sound. Front left, center and right join two surround speakers to reproduce highs, mid and bass frequencies in five full-range channels of surround. Bass rumble, explosions and low frequency effects you feel are delivered through a dedicated sixth, subwoofer channel. Dolby Digital (also known as AC-3 or Dolby 5.1) and MPEG Multichannel delivered the expanded sense of depth, localization and overall realism which was formerly only known from digital surround sound equipped movie cinemas. DTS - DTS surround sound is a cinema surround sound format that offers superior digital audio performance than other available surround sound formats. DTS is said to offer more clarity and definition especially for higher tones. The better sound auality is a direct result of the limited sound compression (3:1 instead of 11:1 for Dolby Digital) and the 20-bit resolution. DTS movie and music software is available on various DVD and CD titles. MPEG MultiChannel Sound - MPEG MultiChannel is an audio coding method for digital multichannel surround sound just as Dolby Digital (AC-3) is. Next to Dolby Digital, MPEG MultiChannel is the alternative coding format for DVD. With MPEG as the (exclusive) audio coding format for multi channel digital TV broadcasting in Europe, the Philips receiver guarantees compatibility for the near future - making its purchase a save investment. 500W surround power output: - The five, 3x100W (left, right, center) and 2x100W (rear), receiver amplifiers deliver 400 Watts of home theater power. The stereo output power of 100W per channel is specified at 6 Ohm, DIN, 1kHz and 0.7% total harmonic distortion (THD). The amplifiers have been designed with special attention to a short 'rise' and 'fall' time, so characteristic for the frequent and sudden drastic changes in dynamics of movie sound in general. Furthermore, the amplification reserves are designed such that they are more than sufficient to follow sudden needs for more sound pressure. Digital Sound Processing via Tetra CORE - The Philips Tetra Core sound processor is the successor to the DUET Core. The Tetra Core IC decodes Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG Multichannel surround sound. Its huge processing power of 100 MIPS (million infractions per second) and resolution of 24-bits assures the highest possible accuracy in digital audio processing. The Tetra Core accepts incoming digital signals with sampling frequencies of 32, 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz (the latter is used in DVD-Audio). Other characteristics are automatic source detection (Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG and PCM audio) with smooth (clicking free) switching. Lastly, the Tetra Core carries digital bass cross-over filters (for subwoofer signal) and 4th generation virtualizer algorithms for highly realistic virtual surround sound. Natural Surround - Natural Suuround creates a more realistic (natural) surround sound impression by creating phantom speakers in addition to the real speakers. These phantom speakers are created using psycho-acoutical sound encoding algorithms. Natural Surround gives the listener the impression of being surrounded by a 'wall of sound' and thus creates an even higher sense of realism. Natural Surround consists of in fact two features : multifront and multi-rear, which can be activated individually or simultaneously. In case of multi-front, phantom speakers are added to the front speakers. For multi-rear phantom speakers are added to the rear speakers. * Dolby Digital laserdisc use requires optional AC-3 RF demodulator.
3D Virtual Surround / Virtual Dolby Surround - A new Surround playback system that delivers amazingly rich and convincing surround sound from only the two or three front speakers. The ProLogic, MPEG, DTS or Dolby Digital surround channel is processed by a 'virtualizer' DSP to add surround effect from just the front speakers. 'Hall' feature - For use with non-surround sound sources in order to create a cinema effect through normal stereo with rear speaker sound. This 'simulated' surround provides an extra musical ('live') ambience to stereo sound. Screw terminals - For left, right and center speaker connection ensures a loss-less flow of electrical signals from the set to all main loudspeakers.
Convenience
51-key Audio/Video Multi Brand Universal remote control - To operate all main receiver functions and Philips or any other mainstream branded CD player, tape deck, VCR, television, DVD player or Satellite receiver. The remote will operate your non-Philips equipment by simply entering a code from the instruction manual in the remote control. The remote has a clear ergonomically designed lay-out (see picture). 30 tuner presets with station name display - The available tuner presets can be randomly used to store AM and FM stations (30 in total). Each of the presets can be given a user defined name of up to 8 characters. (/01, /15)Giving the preset a name is as easy as 1-2-3 with the menu navigator. For RDS stations, station name, RDS clock and RDS text information is available (/00). RDS EON News & Traffic Announcement (TA) Many RDS capable radio stations are of the so called EON (Enhanced Other Network) type. These stations are able to detect news broadcasts and traffic announcements of other stations in the same 'network'. The receiver display indicates when the active station is EON-capable. When 'News' and/or 'Traffic Announcement' are activated by the user, the tuner will automatically switch to the correct station when a news bulletin or traffic announcement is broadcasted. Afterwards the tuner conveniently switches back to the original station. News and TA not only work in tuner mode; when the receiver is set to any of its other sources (e.g. CD, VCR, CDR, etc.) it switches to the tuner whenever there is a news or traffic bulletin. Whatever you're listening to, Philips keeps you informed on the most recent traffic and news affairs! (Note : although all EON stations offer 'TA', 'News' might not be widely available in every country). Set up Menu Navigator - The menu navigator rotary knob takes away many buttons from the set, thereby reducing complexity and enhancing usability of the set. The menu navigator is a menu-based user interface used for all kinds of initial set-up operations (speaker set-up, tuner installation etc.) Via icons in the display, the system conveniently guides the user to the next step in the receiver set-up. In normal mode, the menu rotary functions as tuner preset dial. Tuner sensitivity adjustment - The tuner sensitivity to pick up radio stations can be set to high and low. In case of low, only the 'strong' stations will be picked up during a search. When even some of the weaker stations are of interest, the 'low' option will pick up every station the tuner can possibly receive. Display brightness adjustment - Conveniently adjusts the brightness of the display in 3 steps. (/01, /15 only) 2 switched mains outlets - Allows to connect 2 other HiFi components. Switching the receiver to standby will automatically switch off the connected set. Standby power <2W - To help save energy consumption, the standby transformer of this set has been designed not to consumer more than 2 Watt in standby mode. Scart audio adapter - For easy connection between TV and VCR. (cable includes 'Cinema Link' connection) (/00)
96kHz capable - DVD Audio offers 96kHz sound quality. As the processor of the receiver (Tetra Core) is capable of handling 96kHz and processing it in 24-bits, a DVD Audio player can be digitally connected to the receiver whilst preserving the sound quality of DVD Audio. At the same time, the digital output will provide a signal that can be recorded on any digital recorder like CDR. Stereo Downmix - The digital output will automatically provide a stereo downmix in case a multichannel signal is detected at any of the digital input connectors. In that way digital audio recordings can be made from movie DVD's (e.g. Live concerts from music DVD's) Night mode - Establishes dynamic range compression of digital sound to reduce the volume differences between the loud and soft passages in source material with digital surround sound where sound level differences can be so dramatic. This feature is especially useful at night when you don't want to disturb the neighbors or wake up the kids! Digitals input and output - 4 digital inputs (2 coax, 2 optical) are foreseen to connect digital sound sources (e.g. DVD player, CD player and Digital TV). A digital output connection (coax) is foreseen to enable digital (CD) recordings from any of the digital inputs. Video Connections - 4 video input connections and 2 outputs (incl. monitor) are foreseen to hook up video sources. As these video inputs switch simultaneously with the audio inputs, correct picture with correct sound is guaranteed. Front A/V, Game Input - For quick and easy connection to e.g. a camcorder or video game. 6 Channel input (DVD Audio prepared) - Six input selectors at the back of the set allow to connect to any type of multichannel decorder. Be it DVD Audio or Super Audio CD. The 6 Channel input makes your system future proof! Cinema Link System Control Bus - When connected to a Philips TV with 'Cinema Link' (and even better, in addition a Philips VCR and or DVD player), the combination offers an interesting range of extra user benefits: One Touch Cinema - upon starting your e.g. DVD disc, the complete system will automatically switch to the correct source and sound mode. High Resolution OSD - the onscreen display of the television will feature the 'receiver' menu option. This option can be used for easier receiver set-up and receiver settings. Multiple Languages - depending on the languages offered by the TV (likely are Spanisch, French and English) the user can operate the set via the TV menu in his/her native language. TV as Center speaker allows to get rid of the separate center speaker and use all the speakers and amplifiers in the TV to function as center speaker (most large screen Philips TVs provide over 100W of output power). One Touch End - puts your complete home theater system into standby after some exciting hours of cinema enjoyment.
Design
Harmonized Philips Home Cinema Components Design - The design of this component follows the design language of the Philips Harmonized Home Cinema design. Characteristics of this design language are stylish, simple, capable, powerful and rich. All Philips Home Cinema components and HiFi components will follow this design (e.g. VCR, CD Changer, DVD, etc). Display - Color and graphic/character size are defined such that visibility remains clear even at larger distances. Speaker icons are used to show the actual sound mode. Remote Control - The form of the remote control has proven very successful in usability test. The weight, shape and button follow the book in terms of ergonomic design, thereby offering maximum convenience.

Programming the universal remote control
You can identify the universal remote control by the inscription Multibrand/Universal. Once you have found and tested the codes for your various appliances, you may want to write them down here.
PHONO..
The universal remote control must be programmed to use the codes for your appliances of different brands. This is done by keying in a 4-digit code or by scanning the codes until the correct one is found. We recommend to using the 4-digit code. This method is faster and more reliable. The code scanning method should only be used if you cannot find the code for one of your appliances. The code table can be found at the end of the booklet.
TUNER.. CD.. CDR/TAPE.. TV.. VCR.. SAT.. DVD..
The buttons of the remote control must be used for programming, not the buttons of the receiver or other appliances. Programming with the 4-digit code 1 Keep the source button for the appliance which should be controlled and2 pressed for 3 seconds. 2 Key in the 4-digit code for the appliance (codetable at the end of the booklet). Notes: If more than 4 digits are entered, the remote control will recognize only the ones keyed in first. If you do not key in a code within 30 seconds the remote control will switch off the programming function without changing the code. To program a new appliance, simply overwrite the old code by entering a new one. Scanning the codetable 1 Switch on the appliance which should be controlled. 2 Keep the source button for the appliance which should be controlled and2 pressed for 3 seconds. 3 Press and release 2 again. y The remote control sends the codes for channel up or standby (depending on the selected source) for one brand after the other. 4 As soon as the appliance reacts switches to the next channel or to standby press 2 to confirm the code. y The identified code will be used. If the set does not react within 2 minutes, the code for this appliance is not stored in the remote control. The code of the remote control will remain unchanged. Note: When taking out the batteries of the remote control for more than 1 minute the codes must be reprogrammed.
Resetting the remote control 1 Keep one of the source buttons and 2 pressed for 3 seconds. 2 Key in the 3-digit code 981. y The remote control is now reset to all its original Philips codes.

DVD PLAYER
English System control bus, CINEMA LINK
If the receiver and your Philips TV (or even better in addition a Philips VCR or DVD player) with Cinemalink are connected with the CINEMA LINK system bus control, some extra system benefits are offered: Upon starting a source, the system will automatically switch to that input. You may control the system via the TV screen. Depending on the language of the TV, this can be done in your preferred language. The TV can function as the center speaker of your system, making a separate center speaker unnecessary. (The cable A has to be purchased separately.) By pressing the standby button on the remote control, you can switch the complete system to standby.

English 15 Receiver menu
The receiver is equipped with a menu system. The menu is used for the setup of the receiver. The different menu options are related to each other in a logical way. Lets assume you have no center speaker connected, and therefore switched CENTER SPEAKR to NO. If you try to use VOL CENTER, a message will be scrolled that this is not possible (INSTALL CENTER SPEAKER). The menu always works the same way. Arrows in the display show you the possible moving directions. 1 Press SETUP MENU. y MENU, and * EFFECTS is displayed. You can exit the menu at any time by pressing SETUP MENU. 2 Turn X MENU NAVIGATOR until the desired option (or a value) is displayed. 3 Press NEXT 2 to choose the displayed option (or ENTER / OK to confirm a value). TV menu
If the receiver is connected to a Philips CINEMA LINK TV via the CINEMA LINK system control bus sockets (see CONNECTIONS), you may use the TV to set up the system. An option called RECEIVER will be added to the TV menu. If CINEMA LINK is on, adjustments on the receiver will be shown on the TV screen for a few seconds. Consult the instruction booklet of your TV on how to use the TV menu. The options offered may vary by TV model. Switching the connection Press CINEMA LINK to switch the connection between the receiver and the TV either on or off. y If the connection is switched on, CINEMA LINK ON is displayed. Note: We recommend switching CINEMA LINK off during recording. This avoids unwanted interruptions due to switching TV functions. If CINEMA LINK is switched on and the TV menu is active, TV MENU is displayed and the menu and sound functions on the receiver are locked.
SOURCE SELECTION
English SOURCE SELECTOR
When selecting a source by turning SOURCE SELECTOR, the audio and video inputs with the corresponding name are activated. The incoming signal is reproduced by all audio and if the source includes a video signal video outputs of the receiver. It is possible to reassign a source selection to other than these standard inputs. Source selected.Connectors used DVD.COAX 1 digital audio input and DVD IN video input PHONO.PHONO IN audio input TUNER.The tuner part of the receiver is used, all inputs are switched off. CD..CD IN audio input CDR/TAPE.CDR/TAPE IN audio input TV..TV IN audio input and no video input VCR.VCR IN audio input and VCR IN video input SAT.SAT IN audio input and SAT IN video input
Using one source selection for two or more appliances
You may assign more than one source to a source selection. This can be useful when products are connected one after the other in a chain. Example: A VCR is connected to the TV but only the TV is connected to the receiver. Both SOURCE SELECTOR settings, TV as well as VCR, have to use the TV input connectors. 1 Choose * SELECT INPUT from the menu and press NEXT 2. 2 Turn SOURCE SELECTOR to select the source which should be reassigned (e. g. VCR). y The name of the source is displayed and the light of the source flashes. 3 Turn X MENU NAVIGATOR to select the input connectors which should be used (e. g. VCR -> TV IN). 4 Press ENTER / OK to confirm your selection. y STORED is displayed briefly. 5 This source selection is now using the chosen audio input (e. g. VCR uses the TV IN input connectors, VCR <TV IN> is displayed briefly when switching to VCR).
6 CHANNEL / DVD INPUT selection
The 6 CHANNEL / DVD INPUT connectors can be assigned to any of the available sources (excluding TUNER and PHONO). The assignment can be done via the * SELECT INPUT option in the menu. See below for more details.
About 6 CHANNEL / DVD INPUT
The 6 CHANNEL / DVD INPUT can be used to connect a device with a built-in multichannel decoder (e.g. Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.) and 6-channel output connector, i. e. a high end DVD player. When using the 6 CHANNEL / DVD INPUT audio input, the receiver works as a multichannel amplifier. The source reproduces surround sound and sends it to the receiver divided into the necessary channels. Therefore the SURROUND ON/OFF, HALL and SURR. MODE button have no effect since the provided signal is already multichannel. From a source which is connected to the 6 CHANNEL / DVD INPUT audio input cannot be recorded.
Reassigning a source selection
If a source is selected with SOURCE SELECTOR the standard audio input is used. To change this, the source selection must be reassigned to another audio input. Example: Reassigning CD from the analogue CD IN audio input to the digital COAX 2 IN audio input. 1 Choose * SELECT INPUT from the menu and press NEXT 2. 2 Turn SOURCE SELECTOR to select the source which should be reassigned (e. g. CD). y The name of the source is displayed and the light of the source flashes. 3 Turn X MENU NAVIGATOR to select the input connectors which should be used (e. g. CD -> COAX2). 4 Press ENTER / OK to confirm your selection. y STORED is displayed briefly. 5 This source selection is now using the chosen audio input (e. g. CD uses the COAX 2 IN input connectors, COAX 2 lights when switching to CD).
PLAYBACK, RECORDING
Playing a source
1 Press POWER / STANDBY to switch on the receiver. 2 Turn SOURCE SELECTOR to select a source. y The name of the source is displayed. You can select the FRONT AV / GAME input by pressing FRONT AV (FR 975 only). 3 Start playback of the source as usual.
Recording from a source
If you wish to record from a source you must select it with SOURCE SELECTOR. The incoming signal is reproduced by all audio and if the source includes a video signal video outputs of the receiver. The sound settings do not affect the recording. 1 Turn SOURCE SELECTOR (or press FRONT AV FR 975 only) to select the source you want to record from. y The name of the source is displayed. 2 Prepare the desired recording appliance. It must be connected to one of the outputs of the receiver. 3 Start recording on the recording appliance. 4 Start the playback of the source as usual. Notes: The audio and video signal of VCR IN is not reproduced by VCR OUT. The same applies to the audio signal of CDR/TAPE IN to CDR/TAPE OUT. We recommend not to use the digital output COAX OUT of the receiver to record from an analogue source. Use the analogue output CDR/TAPE instead. From a source which is connected to the 6 CHANNEL / DVD INPUT audio input cannot be recorded.
Adjusting the sound
Turn VOLUME to adjust the volume. y VOLUME and the volume level between 0 and 50 is displayed. 1 Press BASS or TREBLE. y BASS or TREBLE and the actual value are displayed briefly. Then TURN VOLUME KNOB TO CHANGE is scrolled. 2 Turn VOLUME to adjust the bass or treble. y BASS or TREBLE and the actual value are displayed. Note: If VOLUME is not turned within 5 seconds or if any other control is used, the bass or treble adjustment is switched off. If a subwoofer is connected, press SUBW. ON/OFF to increase the bass performance. Note: In case of digital surround sound, a subwoofer signal will only be available when supported by the source material. Press LOUDNESS to switch loudness either on or off. y LOUDNESS is displayed if loudness is on.
Recording from the digital output
It is possible to connect a digital recorder to the digital output of the receiver. In this way, all signals coming from the digital inputs can be recorded directly on the connected audio recorder. The receiver will also convert all signals coming from the analogue inputs to the digital output. The receiver can be used to record digitally a multichannel surround sound audio signal (Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG) from, for example, DVD to CD-R. The receiver will convert the digital multichannel signal into a stereo signal without loss of relevant sound information. Notes: When recording a Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG signal, each track must be recorded individually. Digital recording is not possible when the digital source material is copy-protected.
Switching FM sensitivity
You can switch the tuner to a lower search sensitivity, to search only for stations with a strong signal (FM only). 1 Turn SOURCE SELECTOR to select the tuner. y TUNER is displayed. 2 Press SENS. on the receiver. y Either SENS HI or SENS LO is displayed for 5 seconds. Note: While searching for radio stations, the actual sensitivity is displayed. In this case, SENS LO means the tuner is only looking for radio stations with a strong signal.
Tuning to stored radio stations
1 Turn SOURCE SELECTOR to TUNER to select the tuner. y TUNER is displayed. 2 Turn TUNER PRESET X to select a preset radio station. y PRESET, the preset number and station are displayed.
Naming radio stations
It is possible to assign a name to any of the preset radio stations. RDS station names also can be overwritten. 1 Choose * TUNER from the menu and press NEXT 2. 2 Choose GIVE NAME and press NEXT 2. y A preset radio station is displayed. 3 Turn TUNER PRESET X to select the preset to be renamed. 4 Press ENTER / OK to confirm your selection. yThe existing name or ________ is displayed. 5 Turn TUNER PRESET X to select a letter and NEXT 2 or 1 PREV. to move to the next or previous position. 6 After you have entered the entire name, press ENTER / OK to confirm. y STORED is displayed and the name is stored. Note: If you want to use the transmitted RDS station name again, simply clear the given name.
Resorting stored radio stations
After programming radio stations, you might want to change their sequence. RESHUFFLE allows you to exchange the positions of presets. 1 Choose * TUNER from the menu and press NEXT 2. 2 Choose RESHUFFLE and press NEXT 2. y PRESET, a preset number and station are displayed. 3 Turn TUNER PRESET X to select a preset station. 4 Press ENTER / OK to confirm the selection. y The selected preset number SWAP <-> and a second preset number are displayed. 5 Turn TUNER PRESET X to select the other preset station. 6 Press ENTER / OK to confirm the exchange. y RESHUFFLED is displayed briefly and these two preset numbers are swapped.
