8 Paging key Paging is a useful way of nding lost handsets. 1 Press on the base. All handsets ring. 2 Press again to cancel the paging call or press any key on the handset to stop the paging call.
Standby mode If you do not press any button on the handset for 15 seconds the display will automatically return to standby. It will also return to standby when the handset is placed on the base or charger.
2.6 Menu navigation The basic steps of navigating through the menu and on-screen options. 1 From the standby screen, press. The main menu is opened. 2 Use the and keys to scroll through the menu. 3 Soft key options OK and BACK are displayed. Press to select OK and open a sub-menu or validate an option. Press to select BACK and go back to previous menu level, correct a character or cancel an action. 4 Press to return to standby.

Getting started

Always use the telephone line cord supplied with the unit. Otherwise you may not get a dial tone. Note In some countries the line adaptor may not be attached to the line cord. If this is the case, please connect the line cord to the line adaptor before plugging it into the line socket.
3.1 Position the base Place the base within reach of the telephone line and electricity sockets. Tip The position in which you place the base can have an effect on the range and performance of your product. Avoid placing the base too close to large metal objects such as ling cabinets, radiators or electrical appliances. This can impair the range and sound quality. Buildings with thick internal and external walls may impair transmission of signals to and from the base.
Plug the line cord and the power cable into the sockets at the back of the base.
Connect the base Warning Make sure you connect the power adaptor and telephone line cord correctly as incorrect connection could damage the product. 14
Plug the other ends of the line cord and power cable into the telephone socket and mains power socket.

4.1.3 Dial one-touch numbers 1 and Press and hold or until the number is displayed and dialled. If no number is stored, you hear a beep.
4.1.5 Call waiting If you have subscribed to Call Waiting service, the earpiece will emit a beep tone to inform you that there is a second incoming call. The number or name of the second caller will also be displayed if you have subscribed to Caller Line 17
Identication service (CLI). Please contact your network provider for more information on this service. To answer the second call, press.
4.1.6 Call from the call log 1 Press. The rst entry in the call log is displayed. 2 Scroll or to the entry you want. 3 Press to dial the number. Note You need to subscribe to your networks Caller Line Identication service to be able to see the callers number in the call log. See Call log on page 25 for more details.
Warning When the phone is ringing, avoid holding the earpiece too close to your ear as it may damage your hearing. Handsfree activation can suddenly increase the volume in the earpiece to a very high level. Make sure the handset is not too close to your ear. Tip If Auto pick-up mode is on (see page 32), simply lift up the handset from its base to answer the call. The default setting is off, in which case you will need to press to answer a call. Note An incoming call has priority over other events. Whenever there is an incoming call, other status in progress such as phone setting, menu navigation, etc. will be aborted. 4.1.8 Adjust volume 1 During a call, press or to adjust the earpiece or loudspeaker volume. The volume level is shown in the handset display.
4.1.7 Answer a call 1 The phone rings and ashes in the display. Press or press to answer the call via the loudspeaker.
4.1.9 Mute Mute the microphone so that you can talk to someone else in the room without your caller hearing you. 1 During a call, press. The microphone is muted. 2 Press again to turn the microphone back on.
4.3 Intercom This feature is only available when there are at least two registered handsets. It allows you to make internal calls, transfer external calls from one handset to another and use the conference option.
4.1.10 End a call 1 Press. The call duration is displayed on the handset screen for about 5 seconds. Tip If Auto hang-up mode is on (see page 32), simply replace the handset on the base to end the call. The default setting is on.
4.3.1 Call another handset 1 Press. If you have two handsets, the other handset is called automatically. If more than two handsets are registered to the base, their numbers are displayed, e.g. INT 2345*. Enter the number of the handset you want to call, or press to ring all handsets. 2 Press to hang up. Note If the handset does not belong to the SE240/SE245 range, this function may not be available.

The display shows the rst entry beginning with N. If required, scroll to the exact entry. Press to dial the entry displayed.
For instance to enter the name Paul. P Press once. A Press once. U Press twice. L Press three times. To enter a space, press. Press to delete a character or press and hold to delete all characters.
5.2 Store an entry 1 Press. PHONEBOOK is displayed. 2 Press. NEW ENTRY is displayed. 3 Press. ENTER NAME is displayed. 4 Enter a name and press 5 Enter a number. Press to save. 5 Press to return to standby. Note Cancel storing an entry by pressing at any time during the process.

5.5 Enter a pause If your SE245 is connected to a switchboard, you may need to enter a pause in a stored number. This gives the switchboard time to get an outside line. A pause is normally stored after the switchboard access code (e.g. 9).
When storing a number, press and hold until the display shows P. Then continue storing the number.
5.7 Edit an entry 1 Press. 2 Scroll to the entry you want to edit and press. EDIT ENTRY is displayed. Press key again. 3 Edit the name and press to conrm. Use to delete characters. 4 Edit the number and press to conrm. 5 Press to return to standby.
5.6 View an entry 1 Press twice. 2 Scroll to LIST ENTRY and press. 3 Enter the rst letter of the name to search alphabetically then scroll or to the exact entry. 4 Press to display the number. 5 Press to return to standby.

5.10 One-touch keys The or keys have pre-stored phone numbers for one-touch dialling. Note The pre-stored numbers usually give you access to services offered by your network, but this depends on your country and network.You can set the one touch keys to dial numbers stored in your handset phonebook.

9.4.3 Dial a baby call number 1 When a baby call number has been stored and the baby call setting switched on, press any key (except ) on the keypad to dial the number. Note When baby call is switched on, you can still answer any incoming call as normal.
If you wish to register another manufacturers handset, the instructions may vary. In this case, please refer to the manufacturer of the additional handset. The Master PIN is required before you can register or unregister handsets. The default PIN is 0000.
9.5 Registration Up to 5 handsets can be registered to one base station. Additional handsets must be registered to the base before you can use them. Notes The instructions described below apply specically to your Philips SE245 handset.
9.5.1 Register a handset 1 At the base, press and hold for about 3 seconds. The base station emits a beep when it is ready to accept registration. Note The base is able to accept registration from a handset within 90 seconds. If is pressed, registration is cancelled. 2 At the handset, press and scroll to ADVANCED SET and press. 3 Scroll to REGISTRATION and press.
If necessary, scroll REGIST. BASE and press. Enter the number of the base on which you wish to register your handset. If you have only 1 base station, press. If you have 2 base stations, press or , etc. The display shows SEARCHING. When the handset registers with the base, it is assigned the next available handset number (shown in the handset display).

9.5.2 Select a base You can register your SE245 handset with up to 4 bases. Once registered, you can switch between bases, for example, bases at home and at work.
At the handset, press and scroll to ADVANCED SET and press.
9.5.3 Unregister a handset 1 At the handset, press and scroll to ADVANCED SET and press. 2 Scroll to UNREGISTER and press. 3 Enter the 4-digit master PIN and press. 4 Scroll or to the handset you want to unregister and press. UNREGISTERED is displayed on the handset screen.

9.6 PIN The 4-digit master PIN is used when registering or unregistering a handset and when changing some settings on your SE245. The default setting is 0000.You can change this PIN for more secuirty
Note Entries stored in the phonebook and new answering machine messages are retained.

9.8 Auto prex You can set the SE245 to detect a dialling number and replace it with another number.You can enter up to a 5 digit number to be detected and replace it with a number of up to 10 digits.
9.9 Country setting If you move to another country you can set your phone to be compatible with the network settings of that country. Note If you make a mistake during welcome mode country selection, you can also reset your country. Depending on your country, this option may be displayed as NOT AVAIL or your country may not be displayed.

10 Using your answering machine
Your SE245 answering machine records unanswered calls when it is activated. It can store up to 59 messages within the maximum recording time of 12 minutes. Each message can be up to 3 minutes long.Your personal outgoing messages can be up to 1 minute long.
Delete current message during message playback. Long press to delete all messages when TAM is in standby mode. Increase speaker volume during message playback. Decrease speaker volume during message playback.

10.3 Play messages 1 Press scroll to ANSW MACHINE and press. 2 PLAY is displayed. Press to play new messages. The display shows the number of new messages. If there are no new messages, all stored messages are played.

10.5 Record a memo You can record a memo which is stored on your answering machine and played back like a normal message.

10.6 Outgoing messages This is the message your callers hear on the answering machine. There are two pre-recorded outgoing messages, or you can record your own.

10.6.1 Answer & Record The caller can leave a message. The pre-recorded message is This is an answering machine, please leave your message after the tone.

Scroll or to display the message type you want : PERSONALISED to set your own recorded message or PREDEFINED for the prerecorded message. Press to conrm. If you select PERSONALIZED, see following paragraph.
10.6.3 Set answer mode Set your machine to Answer & Record or Answer Only.
10.6.4 Record, play or delete your own outgoing message Answer & Record invites your callers to leave a message. Answer Only lets callers hear your announcement but they cannot leave a message.
10.7 Answer machine settings 10.7.1 Ring delay Select the number of rings before your answering machine picks up the call. Choose from rings or Toll Saver. Note If Toll Saver is selected, then : If you have new messages your phone answers after 2 rings. If there are no new messages it will answer after 6 rings. So you have the option to hang up, saving the time and cost of a call. If the memory is full, it will answer after 10 rings in Answer Only mode.

10.8 Remote access Remote access allows you to operate your answering machine and listen to your messages by calling your SE245 from another phone. The default setting is activated. Call your SE245. When you hear your outgoing message, press #. 2 Enter your 4 digit PIN. The default code is 0000. You hear a conrmation beep. Note Change this code for increased security, see PIN, on page 38. 3 After entering your PIN, as stated above, use the keypad to operate your SE245 answering machine : Play all messages 2 Play previous message 1 Play next message 3 Delete message playing 6 Switch answer machine on 7 Stop playback 8 Switch answer machine off 9

10.10 Memory full The memory is full if there is less than 15 seconds of recording time left or if the maximum total of 59 messages has been reached. If the memory becomes full while a caller is leaving a message, they will hear a beep and the call is ended.

11 Maintenance and replacement
11.1 Cleaning Simply clean the handset and base with a damp(not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never use household polish as this will damage the product. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static shock.

12 Technical data

Battery life and range Talk time and stand-by time When the battery is fully charged, the talk time of your SE245 is approximately 10 hours and the stand-by time is approximately 150 hours.
Battery type The batteries that are used on your SE245 are AAA NiMh 550mAh.
Low battery warning The battery level is shown in the top left of the handset display. When the battery level becomes low, you hear a beep once every minute (during a call) and the icon ashes. If the battery level becomes exceedingly low, the phone automatically switches off shortly after the alert. The approximate power levels of your battery are : Fully charged. Partially charged. Running low.
Out of range warning In ideal conditions the range of the phone is up to 50 metres indoors and 300 metres outdoors. When you are getting close to being out of range during a call, the handset gives a warning beep. If the handset moves outside this range, the handset gives and error beep, the call is lost and some other functions will not be available.You will hear an error beep if you try to use them, provided the error beep is switched on. When you come back in range of the base, the handset gives another beep.

Notes * The line adaptor may not be attached to the line cord. If this is the case, please connect the line cord to the line adaptor before plugging it into the line socket. If you have purchased a multipack you will have additional handsets, chargers, power adaptors and AAA rechargeable batteries. Warning Always use the cables and batteries supplied.

Connect

Tip Placing the base too close to large metal objects or electrical appliances can impair the range and sound quality. Thick walls may also impair transmission of signals to and from the base.

Position the base

Place the base within reach of the telephone line and power sockets.

Connect the cables

Plug into the sockets
Plug the line cord and power cable into the sockets at the back of the base.
Plug the other end of the cables into the wall sockets.

Install

Warning Leave the handset to charge for at least 24 hours before first use.

Install the batteries

Set up your phone
If the display shows the standby screen, your phone is ready to use. Or If the display shows WELCOME: you must select your country. Please see page 16 in the main user guide for more information. Insert the batteries and slide the battery door into place.
Press or to select your. country and press Display shows CONFIRM?. Press The screen language and other important settings are set for the country selected.

Charge handset

SE240 your phone is ready to use. SE245 your phone is ready to use. The answering machine is automatically set to On and ready to record messages.
Place the handset on the base to charge the batteries. The battery icon is displayed.

End a call Press.

Make a call Enter the phone number and press. Answer a call When the phone rings, press

Dial from the phonebook

Press , then scroll to the entry you want. to dial. Press or
Adjust earpiece volume During a call, press or Redial last number

Change the ringer volume and ringtone Press , scroll to PERSONAL SET and press. HANDSET TONE is displayed, press. RING VOLUME is displayed, press. Press or to adjust the ringer volume level and press to save the setting.
Scroll. Select press to RING MELODY and press or your ringtone and to save the setting. , PHONEBOOK is displayed.
Set date and time Press , scroll to CLOCK/. ALARM and press DATE & TIME is displayed. Press. Enter the date (DD/MM) and press. Enter the time (HH--MM) and press to confirm. Press to return to standby. To display the date & time in standby mode, make a long press on. SE245 only Switch the answering machine off and on Press at the base. Listen to your messages Press.Your new messages are played. Or Press and hold to hear all messages stored on your machine.

Troubleshooting

For more solutions, see the full FAQs section in the main guide. No dialling tone Check the connections. Unplug your phone then plug back in the mains power. Batteries are empty charge the batteries for at least 24 hours. You may be too far from the base move closer. Use the line cable provided. Poor sound quality Move closer to the base. Move the base at least one metre away from any electrical appliances. The icon is blinking Move closer to the base. Register the handset to the base. Caller Line Identification does not work Check your subscription with your network operator. No ring tone If the icon is displayed, the ringer is switched off. Increase the ringer volume.
