When the name Pioneer is mentioned, most of us think of home cinema systems, electronics or plasma screens. Yet the brand is also one of the biggest manufacturers of speaker systems. They may often come bundled with a DVD player and amplifier, but theyre a popular choice as separates too. The S-V610 is about mid-way along Pioneers speaker range. It comprises a pair of distinctive floor-standing S-V610 fronts, S-F60 rears, an S-C60 centre and S-W110S-K subwoofer. The main speakers are stylish, with an alloy-backed curvy finish, and the subwoofer provides an elegant continuation. But the S-V610s are the real visual treat. With their hoop-like base and tall, svelte dimensions theyre like something from B&O without the price tag. The main speakers use the same 20mm dome high-frequency unit and 77mm cone bass units. These arent the most efficient of speakers however a claimed 85dB for the rear and 86dB for the fronts compared to the 89dB90dB efficient models commonly available. In practical terms this means the speakers will be quieter at any given point on an amplifiers volume knob than some more efficient designs. The sub is a 120W-powered model with a 220mm bass single unit designed to deliver bass from 30Hz-200Hz. In practice however it will more likely be used in the 30Hz-80Hz region, which gives a smoother-sounding connection between speaker and subwoofer. (a top-notch speaker system will make distant objects seem distant, whereas the S-V610 makes them simply smaller and quieter), but its still a solid performance.

Bass concerns

There is a limitation however, and its the subwoofer. This is hardly surprising to get a really good sub sound you need to spend something at least approaching the cost of the S-V610 system on a subwoofer alone. Its limitations become apparent with powerful bass events (the explosion at the start of Cold Mountain, for example) or more subtle moments where the bass underpins the rest of the sound (such as the final stand-off on horseback in the snow). In the former case, the sub is full of rumble but no real impact and room-shaking drive, in the latter it has to be set high or there is no underpinning and the sound comes almost entirely from the main speakers. The package still works together as a whole, though. Okay, systems from dedicated speaker brands will out-perform the Pioneer S-V610, but nothing else at this price looks this good. If you want cool floor-standers at a knockdown price, the Pioneers are well worth an audition.

DTS ES Discrete 6.1

DTS ES Discrete 6.1 is a true 6.1-channel format where an additional Surround Back audio channel is discretely encoded into the DTS bit stream offering enhanced spatialisation over the surround channels for complete 360-degree sound localisation and surround panoramas. This format is backwards compatible, since DTS 5.1 equipment simply ignores the DTS ES Discrete 6.1 Surround Back channel. For DTS ES Discrete 6.1 compatible decoders, a data flag tells the decoder that the bit stream contains an extra discrete Surround Back channel.

DTS ES Matrix 6.1

DTS 6.1 Extended Surround Matrix is where the additional Surround Back audio channel is matrixed into the rear left and right surround channels in the DTS data stream. A DTS ES or compatible decoder then extracts the Surround Back channel that is placed behind the listener and puts him/her right in the middle of the action.

DTS NEO:6

DTS NEO:6 modes apply conventional 2-channel signals to the high-precision digital matrix decoder and achieves 6.1-channel surround playback. High-precision input signal detection and matrix processing enable a full band reproduction for all 6.1 channels. It also improves the separation between the different channels to almost the same level as that of a digital discrete system. DTS NEO:6 Cinema Mode decodes with an emphasis on separation performance to achieve the same atmosphere with 2-channel sources recorded in conventional surround formats as it does with 6.1-channel sources. The original 2-channel signal is distributed into 6 channels thanks to the sophisticated DTS matrix technology. Meanwhile, the effect of the surround signal output from the centre and surround channels adds a natural sense of expansion to the sound field. In DTS NEO:6 Music Mode the front channel signals bypass the decoder and are played directly, so there is no loss of sound quality.

96/24 DTS Decoding

The latest audio format by DTS, the multi-platform DTS 96/24, was the first compressed surround format technology to support 96 kHz and 24-bit sound resolution and multichannel capabilities the best multi-channel audio format for DVD-Video. With its super low audio compression rate and compatibility, both DTS 96/24 and traditional DTS-encoded audio discs will sound rich and sophisticated, with sound quality almost as high as on 96 kHz, 24-bit master tapes in the studio. Backwards compatible with existing DTS decoders, the listener is also able to enjoy DTS 96/24 discs with receivers incorporating a standard DTS decoder.

Dolby Digital

The current surround sound quality decoding standard, Dolby Digital means movie theatre sound performance for a home cinema. The listener will be wrapped in surround sound by 5.1-channel audio sound compression technology. Depending on the speakers, the front left and right, centre, rear left and right speakers can span frequencies from 20 Hz 20 kHz and there is a dedicated subwoofer channel for additional low frequency sound effects. Extra features mean not only stunning soundtracks but also additional language tracks on one disc.

MP3 Playback Compatibility
Because MP3 files (recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW) occupy less space on a disc, it is possible to create CDs of compressed audio. A typical problem with this feature is navigating though the lengthy track listing. Pioneer has provided a solution, an on-screen navigation display. Since the DVD player/Home Cinema system/DVD recorder is normally connected to the TV, it is easy to make selections or programme the playback by utilising this easy-to-use navigation system while viewing the options on-screen.

Several Pioneer DVD recorders, DVD players and Home Cinema systems can play back WMA files recorded on CD-R/RW discs. WMA is a music compression format developed by the Microsoft Corporation. It uses the latest encoding technologies to compress an original audio track, minimising file sizes while maintaining good audio quality. WMA allows users to put more files of a certain sound quality on a CD, or to put the same number of files, but at a higher sound quality, compared with MP3.
Note: Some discs may not be playable due to different recording formats or physical conditions of the disc at the time of recording or playback. Please see the owners manual for further information. RW Compatibility

All Pioneer DVD players, DVD recorders and Home Cinema systems are RW compatible, which means they can play DVD-RW discs recorded in VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode), and of course DVD-R and DVD-RW discs recorded in Video Mode (DVD Video Mode).
Pioneer Original Surround Modes
Pioneer A/V receivers and Home Cinema systems offer a wide range of pre-defined easy-to-use Original Surround modes*, including Advanced Movie, Advanced Music, 5-/6-Channel Stereo, Expanded (Theatre), Virtual Surround Back, Phones Surround, Game and TV Surround mode. Advanced Movie reproduces a mid-sized movie theatre environment, while Advanced Music adds the acoustic feeling of a large concert hall. The 5-/6-Channel Stereo mode simulates the acoustic environment of a regular stereo while using all the speakers in the system to create rich Original Surround sound modes. For receivers with a 6-channel amplifier, 6-Channel Stereo mode is in effect when either one or two Surround Back speakers are used. If Surround Back speaker(s) are not available, 5-Channel Stereo mode will be in effect. Expanded (Theatre) adds more sound depth to Dolby Surround sources (videotapes, satellite broadcasts, etc.) for an overall effect that expands the sound, giving it a dynamic and broad element while allowing faithful reproduction of 5-channel speaker sound. Virtual Surround Back lets you experience 6.1 surround sound with a 5.1 speaker set-up. Just switch to Virtual Surround Back mode when playing sources with a surround channel, and the left and right rear satellite speakers will create a phantom sound source behind you. So it sounds as if there were a speaker there, involving you in the surround experience even more than before. Phones Surround reproduces an overall surround sound effect when using headphones. Game mode enhances the sound from video games. TV Surround produces surround sound even for mono or stereo TV sources. Many models also include several new sound modes. As sports broadcasts are often in mono, Sports mode boosts the sound to give the impression that the listener is at the sports stadium, in the middle of the action. Dialogue Enhancement reproduces enhanced centre channel reproduction during action sequences (see pages 32 and 49 for additional information).
