The speaker distance, trim level and tone are not uniform before adjustment. After adjustment, the system is automatically equalised.
Automatic Frequency Response Alignment.
Next, the system automatically calculates the frequency balance, essentially equalising the speakers for your room. The amplifier emits a series of timing pulses and frequency sweeps that are read by the microphone and sent to a 9-band* digital equaliser for final calibration of up to seven channels. There are two automatic settings that can be selected depending on your needs: All Channel and Front Align. In All Channel mode (flat curve), each speaker is set individually. This setting more closely represents the source material. The Front Align mode (front speaker curve) adjusts all speakers to match in timbre as closely as possible with the main front left and right speakers. With the VSA-AX10i-S, you can also manually set each speakers frequency balance and memorise it into two user memories Custom 1 and Custom 2. Now you can keep the original automatic EQ and easily compare it with your own preference.

Each channels frequency characteristics are adjusted for the actual listening environment (9 levels). All Channel mode flattens each divided range for all channels; Front Align mode synchronises other channels to the front speakers characteristics.
Precise Alignment for Speaker Setting.
The VSA-AX10i-S features an additional tool to calibrate the speakers physical position even more precisely a Reference Calibration Disc (included with the amplifier). This special DVD-Video disc contains two types of signals in DTS format: one for fine speaker distance adjustment and one for fine speaker angle adjustment. With fine speaker distance adjustment, you can set all your speakers distance to an accuracy of less than 1 cm by moving the speakers in turn so that the test tones emanate from precisely between them. The fine speaker angle adjustment uses a voice moving around the listening position in 30-degree steps like the hours on a clock face so the speaker angle can be adjusted to the ideal direction that the sound designer aimed for (ITU-R speaker setting standard used for multi-channel music monitoring). These two adjustments work perfectly with MCACC to present the best possible sound stage in your home.

The ultimate S/N ratio for DVD-Audio.
For the VSA-AX10i-S, Pioneer aimed for a 110 dB S/N ratio to faithfully reproduce the latest wide range audio formats. This was achieved via Pioneers volume control circuitry design Precision Gain Management Volume. This feature checks the gain in each amplification stage and selects the best combination of gain in each stage. For example, at regular volume level the gain for the variable amplifier stage is kept as low as possible; when the volume increases or decreases, the variable amplifier stage adjusts the signal as required. This fine management of volume ensures the best possible signal-to-noise ratio at all monitoring levels.

Efficient internal design for pure signal transmission.
(VSX-AX5i-S, VSX-AX3) Direct construction minimises the energy loop and separates analogue and digital signals, while the Transformer Isolator intercepts the magnetic energy of the transformer. A Digital Shielding Plate helps to avoid unwanted electrical noise and interference. The inside of the amplifier cabinet is divided into separate areas, lending higher rigidity to the chassis and allowing for more accurate sound and image output. A strong, rigid chassis that can easily support a heavy transformer is an important factor for clear, high fidelity sound. This is why thick steel plates are inserted under the transformers to absorb unwanted internal and external vibrations. The 3-D Space Frame construction reinforces the physical strength of amplifiers each frame ties up each block from various angles for stability.
Sound Delay for perfect Audio/Video synchronicity.
(VSA-AX10i-S, VSX-AX5i-S, VSX-AX3) There is nothing worse than a soundtrack that is out of sync with the on-screen image. Some video display systems may add slight delays due to advanced video processing, leading to such audio/video synchronicity problems. Sound Delay solves this problem, allowing you to gently slow down the sound signal so that it matches the on-screen image precisely. The Sound Delay feature is so precise that you can delay the sound from 0.0 frames to 5.0 frames with 0.1 frame steps with VSX-AX5i-S and VSX-AX3, or in 5 ms steps from ms for the VSA-AX10i-S.

Dialogue Enhancement.

Isnt it annoying when you miss some key dialogue during loud action scenes such as an explosion or gunfire? With Pioneers Dialogue Enhancement technology, you wont miss even the quietest whisper! The reason why dialogue often goes missing in action is because the dialogue sound is too soft or the background sound is too loud. The centre speaker, which mainly reproduces dialogue and vocals, is usually placed above or below the TV; this positioning often lessens the impact of the dialogue since the centre channel sound doesnt reach the listener at an ideal height compared to the left/right speakers. This new Dialogue Enhancement mode uses the left/right speakers in addition to the centre speaker for enhanced reproduction of the dialogue, and also creates the impression that the centre channel sound is coming directly from the TV. (Left and right speakers must be positioned at the same height as the TV, i.e. at ear level.) The function can also be switched on at any time you feel that the sound from the centre channel isnt clear.

PROFESSIONAL SOUND REPRODUCTION WITH ADVANCED MCACC (VSA-AX10Ai, VSX-AX4AVi, VSX-AX2AV)
With Pioneers Advanced Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC) an automatic sound field adjustment system created by Pioneer experts in cooperation with AIR Studios professional sound engineers you are able to precision-tune your home system to your living room just like a sound professional, with minimum effort. Using the included calibration microphone, the MCACC system monitors the sound environment and automatically adjusts various sound parameters. (See page 55 for more info.) Advanced MCACC also neutralises the effects of reverberation, caused by obstacles or imperfect room characteristics. With Pioneers patent-pending 3-D Calibration method, frequency and level readings are taken for each band at a series of time intervals. This enables even more accurate tonal measurement and calibration of the frequency balance. The sound is adjusted based on how we actually hear it. You can even visualise the room acoustics of your own room on your PC, and therefore make more accurate settings. All thats needed is to connect an RS-232C cable (not included) to your PC, and download software from the Pioneer website. You can also consult this site to get calibration results for the VSX-AX4AVi and the VSX-AX2AV. The VSA-AX10Ai also includes an automatic X-curve adjustment*, to ensure that the sound is perfectly matched to your room size. Our perception of the sound frequency changes depending on our distance from the source (high frequencies decrease more for larger rooms). X-curve compensates for this difference. Audio will be fine-tuned and personalised for your home heard exactly the way the recording engineers intended.

But some of the fine details are lost in the digital-to-analogue conversion, and vice versa during digital signal processing. Thanks to the i.LINK* Advanced Resolution Digital Audio Interface, all the original details are preserved. i.LINK supports device-todevice digital audio data transfers of all major compressed and uncompressed formats including operational commands. Only one digital cable is needed to connect the amplifier/receiver with any i.LINK-equipped audio source component for example a DVD-Audio/Video/SACD player to handle DVD-Audio and SACD discs (both multichannel and 2-channel), not to mention digital audio from DVD-Video and CD. By utilising i.LINKs 2-way communication between units, Pioneers PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System) is able to conform the speed of the DVD players signal transfer to the amplifier/receivers crystal clock speed.
