Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES Discrete, DTS NEO:6 and Pro Logic II. Surround sound modes are plentiful, including Virtual Surround Back for an even more impressive sound experience without having to add more speakers, while the courteous Midnight Listening mode stands for clear sound even at low volumes.
VSX-AX3-K
Efficient internal design for pure signal transmission.
(VSX-AX5i-S, VSX-AX3) Direct construction minimises the energy loop and separates analogue and digital signals, while the Transformer Isolator intercepts the magnetic energy of the transformer. A Digital Shielding Plate helps to avoid unwanted electrical noise and interference. The inside of the amplifier cabinet is divided into separate areas, lending higher rigidity to the chassis and allowing for more accurate sound and image output. A strong, rigid chassis that can easily support a heavy transformer is an important factor for clear, high fidelity sound. This is why thick steel plates are inserted under the transformers to absorb unwanted internal and external vibrations. The 3-D Space Frame construction reinforces the physical strength of amplifiers each frame ties up each block from various angles for stability.
Sound Delay for perfect Audio/Video synchronicity.
(VSA-AX10i-S, VSX-AX5i-S, VSX-AX3) There is nothing worse than a soundtrack that is out of sync with the on-screen image. Some video display systems may add slight delays due to advanced video processing, leading to such audio/video synchronicity problems. Sound Delay solves this problem, allowing you to gently slow down the sound signal so that it matches the on-screen image precisely. The Sound Delay feature is so precise that you can delay the sound from 0.0 frames to 5.0 frames with 0.1 frame steps with VSX-AX5i-S and VSX-AX3, or in 5 ms steps from ms for the VSA-AX10i-S.
Audio Scaler.
(VSA-AX10i-S, VSX-AX5i-S, VSX-AX3) Pioneer has developed a new original DSP technology called Audio Scaler, that improves the sound quality of lower audio resolution sources (such as CD, MD or PC Audio) close to the level of DVD-Audio. Thanks to the built-in 192 kHz/24-bit D/A Converter, the signal can be converted to an analogue signal without losing any of the original recording quality. Hi-Bit conversion first enhances the low-level linear PCM signal quality to 24-bits, which results in less deterioration. At the same time, highsampling enlarges the frequency bandwith, resulting in a very wide sound stage which stays as close as possible to the original sound source. The final result is greatly improved sound quality.

Virtual Dolby Digital using SRS TruSurround
Switch on Virtual Surround to enjoy surround sound effects from just two speakers! When you play a Dolby Digital or Pro Logic encoded source, TruSurround technology from SRS produces a deep, realistic 3D Soundspace over just two speakers in a TV set or other stereo playback system. Efficient virtualising circuitry processes the surround channels derived by the multi-channel decoder, then mixes them back into the left and right channels. The result over two speakers is a bigger, more spacious, and more involving sound than regular stereo playback provides. SRS TruSurround is a process certified by Dolby Laboratories for Virtual Dolby Digital sound.

GLOSSARY
THX Surround EX/Dolby Digital EX
THX Surround EX/Dolby Digital EX is a joint development of Dolby Laboratories and the THX division of Lucasfilm Ltd. This phenomenal technology was first heard in George Lucas Star Wars: Episode I-The Phantom Menace. Now applied to home cinema, EX technology creates an extra Surround Back channel, which may have been added when the programme was mixed. By decoding the surround back channel from the left and right surround channels of 5.1 soundtracks, this additional surround back channel allows more detailed imaging behind the listener and brings more depth and better sound localisation than ever before, to give you the feel of 6.1 channels. THX Surround EX/Dolby Digital EX is compatible with Dolby Digital 5.1, so that a regular Dolby Digital decoder can decode EX signals as a normal 5.1 signal.
THX Ultra2 Processing And Certification
THX Ultra2 means exciting eight channel playback performances from any multi-channel programme over the widest possible seating area. Whereas original THX Ultra was intended for Dolby Pro Logic sources, THX Ultra2 is entirely adapted to recent high-quality digital formats such as DTS and Dolby Digital. A true breakthrough in home entertainment technology, THX Ultra2 ensures optimal multi-channel music and film pleasure. In addition to THX Cinema and THX Surround EX, THX Ultra2 technology includes two new modes featuring THX ASA (Advanced Speaker Array). THX Ultra2 Cinema allows non-Surround EX-encoded, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 material to be played on a seven-speaker configuration. For music playback, THX MusicMode can handle all types of music formats, whether it is 5.1-encoded music or high resolution DVDAudio and SACD multi-channel music recordings.
* See the feature charts on pages 76 and 80 for additional information on the surround modes available for each product.
Advanced Cinema & Advanced Concert
Pioneers exclusive DSP technology creates impressive movies and music experiences in two customised DSP modes: Advanced Cinema and Advanced Concert. Advanced Cinema enhances movie soundtracks and other audio/visual sources. Users can experiment with the six modes (Action, Musical, Drama, Sci-fi, Monofilm, 5-D/7-D Theater) to create six different types of acoustic environments. Advanced Concert transforms any living room into a variety of virtual sonic environments with two-channel or multichannel sources. Six modes are also available (Classical, Chamber, Jazz, Rock, Dance, 5-/6-/7-Channel Stereo).
Listening Modes
Pioneer A/V receivers and several Home Cinema systems offer several pre-defined, user-friendly listening modes* compatible with an array of A/V sources. To hear all the sound effects just as if you were sitting in the cinema, select one of the listening modes, such as Midnight Listening mode, Quiet mode, Natural and Bright. The Midnight Listening mode recreates all the thrills and nuances of the original soundtrack even at low volume. To smooth out any rough or sharp sounds, turn to Quiet mode, which cuts down the treble and bass in the sound signal. Natural mode flattens the total frequency output from a multi-channel source to make it suitable for small speakers. This allows the speakers to recreate realistic theatre-like surround sound. Bright mode does the same for 2-channel stereo sources so you get pure, clear sounds at all frequencies from the front speakers.
* See the feature charts on pages 76 and 81 for additional information on the listening modes available for each product.
Most FM stations use RDS to tell listeners the name of the radio station, the programme type (PTY) whether its news, sport, talk show, certain genres of music and other information. This information appears as text on the receiver display. RDS also allows the receiver to search automatically for a certain type of programme and there are about 30 different sorts to choose from. To make life even easier, the Enhanced Other Networks (EON) feature enables the receiver to automatically switch to another specified frequency if there is a traffic or news bulletin you particularly want to hear. Then when the bulletin finishes the tuner returns to the original station or function. This feature can only be used in areas where EON information is transmitted and if the station transmits PTY data.
