Although I am not an audio expert, I have setup (IMHO) a decent sounding Home Cinema system, using mainly Pioneer, VSX-AX5Ai-S (Amp), DV-668 (DVD). Excellent sound, good feature set Ease of use and setting up are as straight forward as it gets the (MCACC)function does a great job. A great piece of kit for those with deep pockets!! Excellent build, this beauty weights a good 20KG.

Sound Delay for perfect Audio/Video synchronicity.
(VSA-AX10i-S, VSX-AX5i-S, VSX-AX3) There is nothing worse than a soundtrack that is out of sync with the on-screen image. Some video display systems may add slight delays due to advanced video processing, leading to such audio/video synchronicity problems. Sound Delay solves this problem, allowing you to gently slow down the sound signal so that it matches the on-screen image precisely. The Sound Delay feature is so precise that you can delay the sound from 0.0 frames to 5.0 frames with 0.1 frame steps with VSX-AX5i-S and VSX-AX3, or in 5 ms steps from ms for the VSA-AX10i-S.

Audio Scaler.

(VSA-AX10i-S, VSX-AX5i-S, VSX-AX3) Pioneer has developed a new original DSP technology called Audio Scaler, that improves the sound quality of lower audio resolution sources (such as CD, MD or PC Audio) close to the level of DVD-Audio. Thanks to the built-in 192 kHz/24-bit D/A Converter, the signal can be converted to an analogue signal without losing any of the original recording quality. Hi-Bit conversion first enhances the low-level linear PCM signal quality to 24-bits, which results in less deterioration. At the same time, highsampling enlarges the frequency bandwith, resulting in a very wide sound stage which stays as close as possible to the original sound source. The final result is greatly improved sound quality.

VSX-D912-S NEW

A/V Receiver

100 W x 6 DIN

VSX-D912-S set-up microphone VSX-D912-S front panel open
This stylish A/V receiver reproduces the latest trends in cinematic surround sound. Behind the designer aluminium front panel highlighted with a blue LED, youll find a powerful 6-channel amplifier (100 W x 6) and the newly developed Pioneer original Digital Core Engine with the latest Motorola high-speed 150 MIPS 48-bit processing (double precision) DSP. Its ready for the latest surround sound formats, including quality DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES for a third surround sound back channel that flies overhead, and Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 for multi-channel sound from a variety of sound
sources. Accurate high fidelity sound reproduction has never been easier to set up thanks to the Automatic MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System) Set-up. It uses a microphone to monitor the sound environment and then adjusts speaker size, delay and channel level to match your living room acoustics. Operated by a highly intuitive remote control, this A/V receiver is topped off with functional extras like Phones Surround and a front optical digital input to connect a game console, portable DVD, MiniDisc or CD player directly to your sound system.

Easy and Precise Set-up with MCACC Set-up.
The MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System) Set-up is a user-friendly sound field adjustment system, which enables you to adjust acoustic conditions to match your living room environment like a mini sound stage in your own home. MCACC Set-up comes with either automatic or manual adjustment capability.

Automatic MCACC Set-up.

(VSX-D912, VSX-C501) The beauty of this system is that you can automatically adjust your home system just like professionals. The MCACC Set-up system uses a microphone to monitor the sound environment in the room from the listeners perspective. It determines the size and number of speakers, and channel level, as well as distance between the listener and the speakers.

Manual MCACC Set-up.

(VSX-D812, VSX-D712) The Manual MCACC Set-up does not have a microphone to act as a sensor. So, is it back to an all-manual set-up? Not quite. To help you fine-tune the channel level and channel delay, weve given special test tones to each connected speaker. Youll be delighted with the extremely precise settings achieved.
Auto MCACC Set-up FL display
Impressive surround sound, even with headphones or low volumes.
(VSX-D912, VSX-D812, VSX-D712, VSX-C501, VSX-C301, VSX-C100) We all want to hear amazing surround sound when watching our favourite video. But what about when you must keep the volume down? Put on your headphones and use the Phones Surround mode, and youll still get impressive overall surround sound. The soundstage is maintained, which gives the impression that the sound is coming from all around you. If you prefer to listen through the systems speakers and keep the sound turned down, try out Midnight Listening mode. It adjusts subwoofer, rear and centre speaker levels, while enhancing delay and compressing dynamic range, for greater enjoyment of cinema-like sound at low volume.

Dialogue Enhancement.

Isnt it annoying when you miss some key dialogue during loud action scenes such as an explosion or gunfire? With Pioneers Dialogue Enhancement technology, you wont miss even the quietest whisper! The reason why dialogue often goes missing in action is because the dialogue sound is too soft or the background sound is too loud. The centre speaker, which mainly reproduces dialogue and vocals, is usually placed above or below the TV; this positioning often lessens the impact of the dialogue since the centre channel sound doesnt reach the listener at an ideal height compared to the left/right speakers. This new Dialogue Enhancement mode uses the left/right speakers in addition to the centre speaker for enhanced reproduction of the dialogue, and also creates the impression that the centre channel sound is coming directly from the TV. (Left and right speakers must be positioned at the same height as the TV, i.e. at ear level.) The function can also be switched on at any time you feel that the sound from the centre channel isnt clear.

Help me. Help me.

Conventional
Dialogue Enhancement mode
With Dialogue Enhancement mode, centre channel sounds appear to project from the TV, i.e. at ear level, for enhanced dialogue reproduction.

75 W x 5 RMS

RECUP PREVIEW

VSX-C301-S

Style and sound go hand-in-hand with this slim A/V receiver designed to match the DV-464 DVD-Video player. Not only is it powerful with 75 W x 5 RMS output, it includes processing support for Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II. For the movie buffs, there is the Dialogue Enhancement feature for enhanced centre channel listening. Convenient design is part of the package thanks to new features like the easy Room Set-up and Automatic Speaker Configuration. Just select your room size and preferred listening position (Forward, Middle, Back); the receiver automatically detects which speakers are present; the
sound output is then adjusted accordingly. Finally, with 4 Euro-SCART terminals (supporting RGB video throughput), you can easily integrate all your home entertainment devices, including your DVD-Video player, VCR or even a games console. Your living environment is about to come alive.

VSX-C301-K

Make the most of your home cinema system. Wide range of easy connections with 4 Euro-SCART terminals.
(VSX-C501, VSX-C301) Euro-SCART terminals make connecting a range of A/V components so simple. And you can be sure of top quality data transmission at the same time. The VSX-C501-S and VSX-C301 A/V receivers have 4 Euro-SCART terminals 2 in/out and 2 in. This allows for very easy, high-quality connections between the receiver and a range of other devices, such as a DVD player, DVD recorder, VCR, TV, set-top box, game console, etc., as shown in the illustration below. It makes recording between components a snap, such as from the set-top box to the DVD recorder or VCR. For the best picture quality playback, the Euro-SCART terminals can handle RGB video signals (3 in/1 out). (VSX-C501, VSX-C301) Here are two handy features that make it even easier for you to enjoy your home cinema system. Auto Input Select: Did you watch TV yesterday and want to pop in a DVD disc today? No need to switch the input to DVD. Your system will do it for you. The receiver automatically switches to the input that has just been turned on. This means you dont have to change the input on the receiver every time you want to use a different device. AV Direct: Via the SCART cable you connect your sources (DVD, VCR, etc.) to your A/V receiver, and then make a SCART connection to your TV. But sometimes you may not want the full effect of surround sound, and would prefer to listen through your TV speakers. In AV Direct mode, when you have a device connected to the receiver via the SCART cable, both audio and video signals are put through to the TV, as if your source and TV were directly connected.

DTS/DTS ES (DTS Extended Surround)
DTS 5.1-channel playback decoding technology has rapidly gained popularity thanks to its dynamic sound impact that flies at the listener from left, right and centre surround speakers. Open up the doors of digital home cinema and super surround sound with any Pioneer DVD-Video player and A/V amplifier/receiver which can handle DTS and DTS ES encoded digital audio data streams.

DTS ES Discrete 6.1

DTS ES Discrete 6.1 is a true 6.1-channel format where an additional Surround Back audio channel is discretely encoded into the DTS bit stream offering enhanced spatialisation over the surround channels for complete 360-degree sound localisation and surround panoramas. This format is backwards compatible, since DTS 5.1 equipment simply ignores the DTS ES Discrete 6.1 Surround Back channel. For DTS ES Discrete 6.1 compatible decoders, a data flag tells the decoder that the bit stream contains an extra discrete Surround Back channel.

DTS ES Matrix 6.1

DTS 6.1 Extended Surround Matrix is where the additional Surround Back audio channel is matrixed into the rear left and right surround channels in the DTS data stream. A DTS ES or compatible decoder then extracts the Surround Back channel that is placed behind the listener and puts him/her right in the middle of the action.

DTS NEO:6

DTS NEO:6 modes apply conventional 2-channel signals to the high-precision digital matrix decoder and achieves 6.1-channel surround playback. High-precision input signal detection and matrix processing enable a full band reproduction for all 6.1 channels. It also improves the separation between the different channels to almost the same level as that of a digital discrete system. DTS NEO:6 Cinema Mode decodes with an emphasis on separation performance to achieve the same atmosphere with 2-channel sources recorded in conventional surround formats as it does with 6.1-channel sources. The original 2-channel signal is distributed into 6 channels thanks to the sophisticated DTS matrix technology. Meanwhile, the effect of the surround signal output from the centre and surround channels adds a natural sense of expansion to the sound field. In DTS NEO:6 Music Mode the front channel signals bypass the decoder and are played directly, so there is no loss of sound quality.

96/24 DTS Decoding

The latest audio format by DTS, the multi-platform DTS 96/24, was the first compressed surround format technology to support 96 kHz and 24-bit sound resolution and multichannel capabilities the best multi-channel audio format for DVD-Video. With its super low audio compression rate and compatibility, both DTS 96/24 and traditional DTS-encoded audio discs will sound rich and sophisticated, with sound quality almost as high as on 96 kHz, 24-bit master tapes in the studio. Backwards compatible with existing DTS decoders, the listener is also able to enjoy DTS 96/24 discs with receivers incorporating a standard DTS decoder.

Dolby Digital

The current surround sound quality decoding standard, Dolby Digital means movie theatre sound performance for a home cinema. The listener will be wrapped in surround sound by 5.1-channel audio sound compression technology. Depending on the speakers, the front left and right, centre, rear left and right speakers can span frequencies from 20 Hz 20 kHz and there is a dedicated subwoofer channel for additional low frequency sound effects. Extra features mean not only stunning soundtracks but also additional language tracks on one disc.

Dolby Pro Logic II

Dolby Pro Logic II reproduces multi-channel surround sound from a variety of sound sources, including 2-channel sources such as videotapes and CDs, so the listener can enjoy the thrill of 5.1-channel surround even from 2-channel sources. Pro Logic II uses matrix decoding to put the surround rear channels in stereo and cover the full frequency range during playback. There are two special effect modes. Dolby Pro Logic II Movie processing creates a dynamic sound that approaches full-fledged Dolby Digital bigtheatre acoustic quality. Dolby Pro Logic II Music processing upgrades 2-channel stereo CD output to the same surround sound ambience normally found with 5.1-encoded sources. Several Pioneer Home Cinema systems also feature three optional extended parameters in Dolby Pro Logic II Music mode, for additional adjustment: Centre Width Control, Dimension Control and Panorama Mode. See page 26 for additional information.
Virtual Dolby Digital using SRS TruSurround
Switch on Virtual Surround to enjoy surround sound effects from just two speakers! When you play a Dolby Digital or Pro Logic encoded source, TruSurround technology from SRS produces a deep, realistic 3D Soundspace over just two speakers in a TV set or other stereo playback system. Efficient virtualising circuitry processes the surround channels derived by the multi-channel decoder, then mixes them back into the left and right channels. The result over two speakers is a bigger, more spacious, and more involving sound than regular stereo playback provides. SRS TruSurround is a process certified by Dolby Laboratories for Virtual Dolby Digital sound.
