What's New in PolaColor Insight Version 4 _______________________________________________ Thumbnails - You can view all the images from your filmstrip, slide, or APS (Advanced Photo System) carrier as thumbnails. This provides a fast, convenient method for selecting images to enhance or final-scan in a batch. You can also perform orientation operations, such as flipping and rotating, in the thumbnail view. To use this feature, you must have a SprintScan 4000 model scanner. Batch Scanning - Using the thumbnail views described above, you can improve efficiency and throughput by final-scanning multiple images from a filmstrip, slide, or APS carrier in a batch. You can apply corrections individually to each image or apply corrections to several images simultaneously
in the batch. Then you can leave the scanner unattended as it corrects, scans, and saves your selected images automatically. To use this feature, you must have a SprintScan 4000 model scanner. Histogram - This feature provides detailed statistical tonal information for the three RGB color channels and luminance. It also has simple tools for increasing, decreasing or shifting the tonal range to improve contrast, color balance, and other image characteristics. Additional Film Profiles - Profiles for additional Kodak, Fuji and Agfa films have been added to help improve the displayed preview image and reduce the amount of manual image correction required for these films. Adjustable Eyedroppers - You can define whitepoints and blackpoints that are not pure white or pure black to improve highlight and shadow detail in printed images. Binuscan ColorPro Compatibility - If you have Binuscan ColorPro version 5.0 or later installed on your computer, you can process your scanned images through the Binuscan program automatically. When you final-scan an image with the Binuscan option turned on, the Binuscan color processing operation of your choice is applied to the image as it is saved. To use this feature, you must have a SprintScan 4000 model scanner. ICM Compliance - PolaColor Insight now supports the use of monitor profiles created by third-party products, such as Adobe Photoshop 5.0 software. These additional monitor profiles now appear in the Display popup or list on the PolaColor Insight Preview tab. You can use these custom profiles instead of the profiles provided with PolaColor Insight. If you select your custom profile and open a scanned image in Photoshop with the same custom profile, the colors in the image will more closely match the colors seen in the PolaColor Insight preview.
Output Profiles - You can now select a profile to define the color space of the scanned image. If you wish, you can also embed this profile in the image file. This is important when working with some programs, such as Adobe Photoshop 5, that have true ICM compatibility for managing color among various scanners, displays and printers. _______________________________________________ 2. Known Issues _______________________________________________ Macintosh and Windows ===================== 12-bit scanning - The SprintScan 45 will allow the user to interpolate its resolution in 8-bit per channel mode to 4000 dpi. In 12-bit per channel mode, the user will be able to scan at the maximum native resolution of the scanner (2000 dpi) only. This affects the SprintScan 45 only. Windows ======= A small number of Windows 98 users have found that when scanning files larger than 18 MB and rotating the image, the following error may occur: UNABLE TO SAVE "FILE.TIF" BECAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT DISK SPACE To work around this situation: 1. In PolaColor Insight, make corrections to your image, as necessary. 2. Before you make the final scan, return to the Preview tab and select "No Rotation." 3. Return to the Scan tab and save the file as you normally do. 4. If you need to rotate the image, do it in your image editing program.

Adaptec Host Adapter Settings for Windows(tm) 95, 98, and NT 4.0 _______________________________________________ Adaptec 2940 and 3940 family host adapters have an option called SCSISelect. Consult your user's guide for instructions on how to access the SCSI device settings. For proper operation of your scanner, make the following changes to the settings: 1. Access the SCSI Device Settings page to view the settings for each SCSI ID number. 2. For the ID number to which your scanner is set, check the following settings and change them if necessary: Initiate Sync Negotiation - No Maximum Sync Transfer Rate - lowest speed Enable Disconnection (SprintScan 4000) - Yes Enable Disconnection (all other SprintScans) - No Initiate Wide Negotiation - No Send Start Unit Command - No BIOS Multiple LUN Support - No Include in BIOS Scan - Yes For Advanced Host Adapter Settings: "Plug-and-Play"SCAM Support - Disabled (If enabled, the computer will not boot while the scanner is connected.) 3. Save these settings and quit SCSISelect. If you are still having problems with SCSI communication, visit www.polaroid.com and click Customer Support. Recommended SCSI Host Adapter for new Blue and White G3 Macintosh computers _______________________________________________ Testing has shown that the Adaptec model AVA-2906
SCSI host adapter and the Power Domain 2930U SCSI host adapter (and Apple's equivalent low-cost Ultra SCSI card) will work with all SprintScan models. _______________________________________________ 5. Troubleshooting Green Tint in Thumbnail Images _______________________________________________ If your thumbnail scans have a green tint, it may be caused by sprocket holes in the scanned area. To solve this problem, realign the film in the film carrier so holes are out of the scanned area. If this is not possible, cover the sprocket holes with an opaque material before scanning. _______________________________________________ 6.
