DigiTV: Positivo Informtica launches two models of digital TV decoder
Modern design, ease of use and affordable cost are the strong points of Positivo Informticas new set top boxes, which allow owners of analog TVs to receive digital open-channel transmissions with a high-quality picture Curitiba, November 21, 2007 Positivo Informtica, Brazils biggest computer manufacturer and leader in the educational technology segment, is already a fixture in thousands of Brazilian homes through its desktops and notebooks. It is now making its debut in the TV accessory market by launching a line of digital decoders. To begin with, there are two models, the DigiTV Positivo and the DigiTV HD Positivo, both of which will hit the shelves next week in So Paulo, where Brazils first high-definition digital transmissions will take place.
DigiTV Positivo Also known as set top boxes or converters, these devices allow conventional analog TVs to receive digital signals and are indispensable for anyone who wants to benefit from digitals high-quality picture without having to buy a new TV. The DigiTV Positivo allows anyone with a conventional cathode-tube TV to watch the open channels with DVD quality at an affordable cost, says Hlio Rotenberg, Positivo Informticas CEO. According to Rotenberg, even people who own HDTV Ready LCD or plasma sets will need a decoder, in this case one with an HDMI connection, which permits images with a resolution of up to 1,080 lines, known as Full HD. Until fully interactive digital TV enters the scene, a high-quality open-channel image is the great attraction. In other words, with a digital signal and a set top box, even old TVs will be free of ghosting, static and other forms of interference. For example, the DigiTV Positivo allows viewers to watch the open channels with the same quality as DVD or digital cable TV. Ideal for tube (CRT) TVs or LCD/Plasma sets without an HDMI port, i.e. the vast majority of TVs currently in use in Brazil, the DigiTV Positivo receives and decodes high-definition UHF signals via SBTVD (Brazilian Digital Television System). In other words, it receives digital signals and converts them so they can be viewed on conventional analog sets. The DigiTV HD Positivo is recommended for TVs with 720 or 1080 resolution which can receive highdefinition signals through an HDMI connection. Both models use full-seg technology, which allows highdefinition reception for any type or size of TV. In these cases, the unprecedented picture quality is up to 125% times better than DVD or digital cable. Simple to use and with an uncluttered design in neutral colors black and silver Positivos two set top boxes come with TV-type remote controls. The DigiTV Positivo includes an audio and video cable and costs R$ 499.00, while the DigiTV HD Positivo has an HDMI cable and costs R$ 699.00.
Both models need a UHF antenna, which is not included, have a one-year guarantee and can count on Positivos accredited technical assistance network. There are currently around 90 million TVs in Brazil, spread through around 51.8 million homes, 47.2 million (or 91.1%) of which can only receive the open channels, often with a poor-quality signal. In addition, according to an IBOPE survey, 26% of these homes have pay TV solely so they can watch the broadcast channels with a better quality picture. We believe that demand for a free high-quality signal will be enough in itself to fuel demand for set top boxes, which will be subsequently boosted by the differentiated interactive programming to be developed the countrys leading broadcast networks.
