Bow Report

PSE Mossy Oak X

here are more brand-new bow models in the 2007 PSE lineup than in any previous year of the companys nearly four decades of operation. All by itself, that says a lot about PSEs current passion for the sport and drive to create exceptional new archery equipment. Nestled comfortably in the middle of all those new PSE bows is the PSE Mossy Oak X, an especially innovative new bow designed expressly for todays grassroots bowhunters. The new Mossy Oak X is the direct result of the design engineers at PSE sitting down with the avid bowhunters at Mossy Oak to create a brand-new hunting bow that would amaze everyone. The resultant Mossy Oak X is the type of new bow that will surprise and please a lot of bowhunters. Thats because while this new bow sports the sort of design, features and technology that one would expect with a premium bow, the new PSE Mossy Oak X carries a middle-of-the-road price tag. In other words, its an amazing amount of bow for the money. Last year, PSE introduced what it is now calling PSE X Technology. That distinctive bow technology is characterized by an unusually long and straight riser, ultra-short limbs and an oversized eccentric system. The racy split limbs on the new PSE Mossy Oak X are just nine inches The result is a remarkably compact in length and configured to bend past parallel at full draw. and rectangular-looking bow that is especially smooth to draw, easy to aim, forgiving to shoot and quiet and vibration-free. Its state-ofthe-art stuff. You can nd PSE X Technology on many of PSEs top-of-the-line bows for 2007. And, surprisingly, you can also nd it in the midpriced PSE Mossy Oak X. Everyone wants a forgiving bow, one that is especially easy to shoot well. The 2007 PSE Mossy Oak X is such a bow. Its a bow that points and shoots accurately with surprising ease. Much of that, I think, has to do with the bows riser geometry. The Mossy Oak X riser is amazingly straight. On the other hand, most of todays hunting bows feature risers that are strongly reexed (backset) to boost arrow speed. Such reexed risers, unfortunately, also tend to be more susceptible to grip torque, and that can mean that those bows are a bit trickier (less forgiving) to shoot. Such is not the The new PSE Mossy Oak X sports a warm, case with the 2007 PSE Mossy Oak X. Its wonderfully straight riser is barely reexed at all. In fact, I comfortable and classy hardwood grip.
measured the reex on the new Mossy Oak X at just one-fourth of an inch. What that means is that the new PSE Mossy Oak X is especially torqueresistant. I found that the Mossy Oak X aims like a dream and shoots with uncommon consistency. Thats a huge asset for any bowhunter. And for a bowhunter that doesnt have scads of time to practice, its a godsend. The new-for-2007 PSE Mossy Oak X is a surprising bow. Its packed with high-end features and state-of-the-art PSE X Technology. Yet its pleasing price tag puts it well within reach of the vast majority of todays bowhunters.

Features and Benefits

PSE X TECHNOLOGY
There are lots of ways to congure the geometry of a bow. PSE X Technology is distinctively different. It features an uncommonly long and straight riser mated with surprisingly short limbs and an oversized eccentric system. In the new PSE Mossy Oak X, the result is a trim and compact hunting bow with wonderful shooting characteristics. The Mossy Oak X is smooth to draw, easy to aim, forgiving to shoot and both quiet and shock-free. PSE X Technology works.

NRG-X CAM

The new Mossy Oak X is equipped with an NRG-X one-cam eccentric system that is reasonably fast and widely and easily adjustable. Oneinch draw-length adjustments are made with interchangeable modules, without the need for a bow press. Two screws hold the chosen module in place on the lower cam. Finer draw-length adjustments are also available. The string side of the NRG-X Cam has two string-end posts. The standard post is marked with a dot. By relaxing the bow in a bow press and switching the string-end to the post marked with a + symbol, you increase

forgiving of inconsistencies in bowhand torque. The end result is that the Mossy Oak X aims and shoots with uncommon forgiveness.

ULTRA-SHORT PARALLEL LIMBS
The light and airy split limbs on the new PSE Mossy Oak X are just nine inches in length, and they bend past parallel at full draw. To begin with, that ultra-short nature makes for a very durable bow limb. By bending past parallel at full draw, they also signicantly reduce shot vibration. What happens is the tip of the top limb rebounds upward at the moment of release, while the lower limb tip rebounds downward. Those two equal but opposite reactions tend to cancel out shot vibration.

HYPERSPLIT LIMB POCKETS

Draw length is easily adjusted on the new PSE Mossy Oak X by using interchangeable modules. The bows NGR-X Cam also features an adjustable draw stop to fine-tune the feel of the bows draw cycle.
the bows draw length by approximately inch. In addition, the NRG-X Cam features an adjustable draw stop. Loosen the silver fastening screw and rotate the draw stop within the designated slot to ne-tune the position of the bows stop. With the NRG-X Cam, anyone should be able to easily and precisely ne-tune the draw length on the new Mossy Oak X.
Archers dont care much about limb pockets, except that they hold the bows limbs to the riser securely, are neat and trim and they dont make noise. The innovative HyperSplit Limb Pockets on the Mossy Oak X are particularly small and dapper, create a secure limb mounting system, eliminate nearly all metal-tometal contact to reduce shot noise and pivot easily for draw-weight adjustment.

ONBOARD DAMPENERS

A quiet hunting bow is a very good thing. Proper geometry, parallel limbs and unique onboard dampeners all contribute to the quiet shooting nature of the Mossy Oak X. There are four limb dampeners located at the end of the limbs for maximum effect, a cable-guard dampener and two PSE String Chubs on the bowstring. The outcome is a wonderfully quiet bow.

LONG STRAIGHT RISER

The Mossy Oak Xs precisely machined aluminum riser is both remarkably long and straight. That means that there is relatively little reex (backset) to the riser. Because of that geometry, the PSE Mossy Oak X is especially

Bow Report

PSE Firestorm X

SE has been an innovator for decades, and continues in that role today. Last year, for example, the company introduced a revolutionary new bow conguration based on what it called X Technology. PSE X Technology combines ultra-short parallel limbs with a long and straight riser and oversized eccentrics to deliver a decidedly rectangularlooking bow that is distinctive, feels great and shoots even better. This year, PSE dramatically expanded its offering of X Technology bows. Included in that 2007 X offering are the extraordinarily-fast PSE X Force, the mid-priced PSE Mossy Oak X and the new short-and-sweet PSE Firestorm X. Weve already tested and written about the rst twothe PSE X Force in our June 2007 issue and the PSE Mossy Oak X in our May 2007 issue. Its now time we completed our 2007 X Technology review by running the PSE Firestorm X through its paces. The distinguishing characteristic of the 2007 PSE Firestorm X is its compact nature. The 2007 Firestorm The PSE Firestorm X has no less than nine different onboard noiseX measures just 29 inches from axle and vibration-dampening devices, including these flexible to axle. Thats ultra-short. I have to dampeners on the bows limb tips. admit that there was a time when I was less than excited about ultrashort bows. But in recent years, a number of manufacturers have developed extraordinary ultra-short bows that have seemingly shot as well as their longer counterparts. It didnt take many arrows at all to discover that PSEs new 29-inch Firestorm X was one of those bows. How do you make an ultra-short bow shoot well? You start by making it forgiving while fast. Most of This is the NGR-X Cam on the PSE Firestorm X. Its smooth, fast and todays short bows utilized radically conveniently adjustable for draw length and draw stop. reexed (backset) risers to boost arrow speed. The problem is that such congurations tend to be more susceptible to bowhand torque, and that makes them trickier and less forgiving to shoot. Enter PSE X Technology. X Technology utilizes a long and remarkably straight riser. The riser reex on the new PSE Firestorm X measures just
one-fourth of an inch. That makes this ultra-short bow seem to aim with uncanny ease and shoot with uncommon consistency. Piling onto this ultra-short bows shooting characteristics prole is an exceptionally forgiving grip and excellent arrow speed. Combined, that Firestorm X blend makes this short bow shoot very much like a longer bow. And yet it is truly an ultra-short bow, squeezing into ground blinds and tight treestands with ease. The entire time I tested the 2007 PSE Firestorm X, I had to constantly remind myself that this was an ultra-short 29-inch bow. It certainly didnt shoot like it. If you nd yourself leaning toward an ultra-short bow, it would be hard to do better than a PSE Firestorm X.

Features and Benefits

PSE X TECHNOLOGY
About the time that someone says that bows cant get better, they do. A good example is the X Technology introduced by PSE in 2006 and rolled into additional PSE bow models in 2007. PSE X Technology is more than just a distinctive talland-narrow rectangular shape. Its yet another better way to make a bow. By utilizing an unusually long and straight riser, it delivers uncommon forgiveness. By incorporating ultra-short parallel limbs, it provides an especially quiet and vibrationfree shot. By integrating oversize eccentrics, it is able to supply a wonderfully smooth draw along with excellent arrow speed. PSE X Technology is a radical, new and better way to make a bow, particularly a short bow.

SHORT AND LIGHT

The 2007 PSE Firestorm X is just 29 inches axle to axle, and it weighs a scant 3.7 pounds. There are plenty of serious bowhunting situations where such size and weight become a distinct advantage,

PSE B.E.S.T GRIP

After personally shooting, testing and writing about literally hundreds of different compound bows in just the last decade alone, I have become a connoisseur of bow grips. Some bow grips have clearly been designed by serious shooters to enhance forgiveness and accuracy. Others, unfortunately, seem mere afterthoughts. The 2007 Firestorm X utilizes PSEs exceptional torque-reducing B.E.S.T. Grip. Its slim, smooth and perfectly angled. Its very easy to put your hand into this grip exactly the same every time, and that makes it wonderfully accurate. Im not sure if it was a marketing specialist or one of the PSE engineers with a Starbucks in one hand that explained to me that B.E.S.T stood for Biomechanically Ergonomic Slim Throat. OK then. Between you and me, lets just say that this is one of the BEST grips ever offered on a compound bow.

The B.E.S.T grip on the 2007 PSE Firestorm X is wonderfully shaped to promote accuracy. Its also very comfortable.
just a few of which include hunting deer or antelope out of a ground blind, in a treestand, on a tough stalk, climbing a mountain, backpacking into a remote basin and waiting out a wild turkey. Your list might even be longer.

ADJUSTABLE NRG-X CAM

The 2007 PSE Firestorm X is equipped with PSEs new NRG-X one-cam system. Its a fast, forgiving and easy-to-tune system. Interchangeable modules are used to quickly and conveniently effect one-inch draw length adjustments. No bow press is needed for those adjustments. Two screws hold the chosen module in place on the lower cam. Finer draw-length adjustments can be made on the string side of the NRG-X Cam where there are two string-end posts. The
INTEGRATED VIBRATION DAMPENERS
Working in concert with the geometry of the PSE Firestorm X to reduce shot noise and vibration are no less than nine onboard dampening systems. There are four limb dampeners located at the end of the limbs for maximum effect, a cable-guard dampener, two PSE String Chubs on the bowstring and the HyperSplit Limb Pockets that eliminate nearly all metal-to-metal contact. Taken all together, the effect is a very quiet bow with very little shot vibration.
