f some Darwinian character in a few millennia were to look back at the evolution of the Storage and Data Management industry the key milestones in the development would be, not the emergence of new technologies per-se, but the convergence of these technologies. By analogy, a bats predecessors ability to emit a few squeaks is not really groundbreaking nor is an ability to detect sounds particularly noteworthy. The really pivotal moment for the bat was when he first converged these abilities for echo-location to effortlessly navigate dark caves. LeftHand Networks with their SAN/iQ product have converged computing and storage, more specifically iSCSI, Linux, industry standard x86 architecture servers and disk drive technology to produce a storage solution that is really ground breaking in its simplicity, flexibility, performance and reliability. It is also architecturally aesthetic. IT managers, techies and storage salespeople love it!
Heres how it works Take an industry standard x86 server and install SAN/iQ. What do you get? You get a single iSCSI storage node with a few Terabytes of capacity. That is, a chunk of storage accessed as block storage over iSCSI. Not much use yet, but get a standard IP switch and plug in one, two, three or more of the same and storage starts to come to life. Youve built an iSCSI Clustered SAN. It really is that simple. For redundancy in the SAN add a second IP switch as in the diagram below. SAN/iQ does not need an OS loaded on the server it includes a storage optimised build of Linux, though you never see this everything is controlled through a management console. What is this newly created iSCSI clustered SAN capable of? It may be presented back as a single pool of storage accessed via a single LUN or segmented into several LUNs. Every node contributes to every LUN. In fact every spindle and CPU contributes to every LUN meaning that performance is truly
scalable. Dynamic Cluster Expansion means that when a node is added it can become part of the cluster by simply clicking on the new node dragging it into the cluster. Capacity (and performance) can be added without down time! Also, when a node is added, existing data is distributed over the new node so that it immediately begins to participate in the
capacity, performance and reliability of the SAN. There is no limit to the number of nodes in a cluster, or on the number of clusters. What about Reliability? Each node can have RAID 0, 1, 5 (or 6 depending on the server) and multiple level arrays such as 10 or 50 for the appropriate compromise between performance and redundancy within each
SAN. Once the data has been redistributed, the new node contributes seamlessly to the
node. In addition Network RAID allows each piece of data to be replicated, so that 2 or even 3 copies

reside on separate nodes. In the example shown, a disk, a switch or even an entire node can fail without loss of data. With 3-way replication any two nodes may fail without data loss. SAN/iQ offers advanced snapshot capability. Snapshots are instantaneous and may be scheduled or performed manually. The snapshot may be mounted to any location permitting backup, restore or data mining without interfering with the original data set. For instance, mounting a snapshot of a Microsoft Exchange database and attaching it to the Exchange Recovery Group allows for single mailbox recovery or individual mail item recovery. The snapshot itself does not require a dedicated storage pool of preassigned storage. The only storage space required is the space necessary to maintain some tables and to store the live write changes to the volume which only needs to be large enough to accommodate the changes
anticipated between snapshots. If extra space is needed, the volume will automatically grow. There is no limit to the number of snapshots taken or preserved. The simplest recovery method is a snapshot
Copy, even across slow WAN links, because only changes are sent across the wire. Initial syncing of the data can be prohibitive over the WAN because a Terabyte of data could take a month or more to transfer, but LeftHand Networks have provided a
deployed. As the storage is consumed, more nodes may be added allowing Just-In-Time scalability. It is lack of this type of provisioning and dynamic cluster expansion on some storage solutions that forces IT managers to over-provision. Since storage cost is falling at about 10% per quarter these two features significantly reduce cost of ownership. Whats the advantage of using industry standard server hardware from say Dell, IBM or HP to build these storage nodes? The alternative is proprietary storage hardware from one of the large storage companies. Development and test cycles usually mean that the technology in these beasts is probably lagging whats available in off the shelf server hardware. Economies of scale probably mean that you will get significantly more power for your buck with standard hardware and finally, configuration and maintenance costs will probably come at a more competitive cost. Virtualisation, in many

Archive market.
.demonstrates rapid growth
Throughout 2007 the market demand for archival storage has grown significantly. IT professionals are much better educated on archive strategies, and have a better picture of how good archive management can advance their business priorities. Carla Arend, a senior analyst with IDC, recently published the results of her research on the storage software market. It shows that the Archive & HSM storage software segment was the fastest growing in Europe for 2007 at over 30%. The IDC research confirms the market growth seen by vendors, and integrators. Plasmons own market experience suggests that there is no single reason behind this emerging trend, but a combination of factors responsible for archive market growth. Compliance Matures in Europe Weve heard a great deal about compliance in recent years. The influence of industry regulations has been more gradual in Europe than in the US. However, European regulations are now developing the teeth required to persuade organisations to take action, and recent European court cases have resulted in steep fines for non-compliance and poor data management. Archiving Arrives in the Data Centre Historically, digital archives were deployed at a departmental or project level. Today CIOs are pulling these distributed archives back into the data centre. This is partially due to increased concerns about compliance, but there is a broader trend for IT professionals to take on greater responsibility for corporate objectives; not just the operation of technology assets. This change in responsibility has raised the profile of archival storage, improved education and enabled greater funding for archive deployment. Cheap SATA Drives Hit the Wall Inexpensive, high capacity SATA disk drives have been with us for years. Many companies saw these drives as a panacea to take on the relentless demand for greater capacity. In the context of long-term archiving, SATA disk strategies have proven to be very expensive. Frequent system replacement, high backup overheads, and lack of data authenticity make them poorly suited for archiving. Companies now realise that they cant continue to add more SATA disks and are looking for intelligent archive strategies. Electricity Costs Rise Rapidly With the cost of electricity rising rapidly in Europe, reducing power consumption in the data centre is a real concern for CIOs. Since most archive data is retained for long periods of time and infrequently accessed, it is a logical place to begin when looking to cut energy usage. Well managed archive data can be moved off power-hungry disks onto alternative technologies, saving thousands every year in electricity bills, while reducing carbon footprint. Archive Solutions Meet the Challenge The sophistication of archive products has evolved, delivering
is more remarkable is that you can mix and match not only drives from different manufacturers, but different drive capacities as well. As with a standard RAID array, there will always be percentage of capacity that is forfeited to provide the redundancy that will allow all data to survive a hard drive failure (assuming there is a minimum of 2 drives). Regardless of whether Drobo is initially populated with 2, 3 or 4 drives, user information will be protected by ensuring that multiple points of access to the data are available across the total number of

drives using a combination of technologies that exist in standard RAID arrays. A fundamental difference is that all of this protection and the configuration of the storage pool is completely automated. Unlike a standard RAID array, Drobo does not base the usable capacity of the
system on the size of the smallest drive. Drobos method allows for much greater utilisation when using different sized drives, although there will still be usable capacity impact on the overall system. For example, a RAID 5 array populated with an 80GB, a 100GB, a 160GB and a 200GB drive, as shown in the diagram, will give a usable capacity of approximately 240GB whereas an identically populated Drobo will give 340GB of usable data whilst still offering the same level of redundancy as the RAID 5. Another positive aspect of this capacity management from Drobo is that there is minimal wastage of capacity over time. Any spare capacity from larger drives that cannot
be made available as usable disk space initially, is put in reserve for future expansion. So, when the user adds a third or fourth drive, or replaces existing drives with larger capacities, the reserved space is automatically reclaimed as usable capacity without reformatting, or indeed any configuration from the user. By automatically adapting to whatever changes a user makes to the capacity or number of drives installed in Drobo, users can upgrade capacity forever as long as they are replacing a smaller drive with a larger one. All of their data will still reside within Drobo and the migration of data to newly added/upgraded disks is completely automated. Data Robotics DataAware technology ensures that there is instant access to capacity when drives are added or upgraded and it also intelligently tracks where data resides on the disks. This is particularly relevant when recovering from a drive failure as only blocks containing real data will be rebuilt RAID arrays tend to rebuild the entire volume regardless of how little data is actually present.
cleaning cartridge. Less cartridge capacity. You have to buy more cartridges to back up the same amount of data. Lower transfer rates (ie. poorer performance) because the drive has to keep trying to re-write or re-read the same user data before it can successfully verify that the data is 100% accurate. Failed backup and restore operations because there are too many errors to correct. In the worst case, your data could be at risk. Lets do the sums Say the HP tape costs 23 and the other leading brand cost 20. On 150 tapes, buying the other leading brand would save you almost 450. But to get the same capacity from these cheaper tapes, you would need to buy another 200. Thats an extra 4,000! Whether its a comprehensive lab test, a real world test in extreme conditions, or a customers first hand experience, the fact is HP LTO-3 cartridges offer three times the performance and reliability, and twice the
capacity of other leading brands. Perhaps thats why 52% of the FTSE 250s use HP LTO media as their primary brand of Ultrium data cartridges. They understand that when it comes to quality, some tapes are definitely more equal than others.
Cheaper is not always better. Weve tried other brands of storage media and weve been disappointed in the reliability of some of the tape cartridges. Netbanks experience is that HPs technology actually does work better together. It provides superior quality and reliability across the entire disk and tape storage line. We are comfortable that HP tape media has a strong future for many years to come.

Product reviews
The Plantronics CS70N reviewed by Paul Adamson - CMS Product Specialist What were your first impressions of the product? The CS70N is a neat looking product but I was not sure if a headset would improve my working day. In what environment did you use the product? I used it in the office as the headset to my desk phone. How did using the headset affect your working day? My initial interest using a headset came from the fact that I suffer from repetitive headaches and neck strain during my normal working day. I noticed an immediate improvement to these symptoms once I started using the headset. In short - it really did make a big difference. I hardly ever suffer from these symptoms any more. The CS70 is designed for use in the office environment. How do you feel it works with other office products that you use daily? Technology forms an integral part of life in the office and I think the CS70N complements the mobility my laptop and blackberry gives me. I can continue a phone call even as I walk to the printer to collect documents. It allows me freedom and also privacy when necessary. Other comments: I would not be without the headset now - the health benefits were just the start. The freedom to move around with both hands free was a benefit I hadnt really thought about but its great. I also found the noise cancelling feature made the sound very crisp. Having experienced the difference, I wouldnt change back to a handset for anything.
The Plantronics Pulsar 260 reviewed by John Flatley - CMS I.T. Support What were your first impressions of the product? I thought it looked pretty cool. It was something I had never seen before and it looked really modern and stylish! In what environment did you use the product? I used the Pulsar 260 as a hands free kit for my mobile phone as well as to listen to music. How did the Pulsar 260 affect your enjoyment of your music? Having both music and phone calls on a single device was a definite plus. The ear pieces and headset construction was of good quality and provided very good sound. I would definitely recommend it to my friends and colleagues. Are you aware of any similar products on the market? If so, how do you feel it competes with these other products? There are some similar products on the market and some have a single ear piece but I feel the added feature of having stereo sound and being able to listen to music and answer your phone on the same unit is a bonus. Other comments: Overall it works well, has good battery life and a modern design. I have a keen interest in music and so I appreciate good sound quality when I hear it.

Well, I have been at CMS now since September 2007 and I must say I have joined during exciting times both within CMS and the storage industry as a whole. Over the last few months there have been a number of announcements in the product range and introduction of technologies. De-Duplication De-Duplication can take the form of software or hardware de-duping but with the same goal- to fit more data within your backup solution. Take the first step with deduplication using the Quantum GoVault. Advanced Data Deduplication Increases Disk Retention for Backup Data The DXi-Series disk backup and replication appliances leverage Quantums patented data de-duplication technology to dramatically increase the role that disk can play in the protection of critical data. With DXiSeries solutions, users can retain 10 to 50 times more backup data on fast recovery disk than with conventional arrays. The results are faster, more reliable restores and a substantially increased number of data recovery points. DXi-Series appliances provide true enterprise backup speeds of up to 800GB per hour, allowing users to complete critical jobs during short backup windows.
PS, by the time you read this the Quantum standalone LTO 4 half height drives will have been released. The wait is finally over.

According to Frank Salmon, Group MD, We see more and more customers asking for solutions for which IP SANs are the natural choice. In this explosive growth area, LeftHand Networks really have taken centre stage. We are delighted to be able to offer their solution and we are immediately beginning a reseller partner recruitment program. We are already geared up to provide sales
and technical training to interested resellers in UK and Ireland. Whats more LeftHand Networks also announces a new storage appliance with great reseller margin. The NSM 2120 is the latest addition to the LeftHandbranded portfolio of next generation SAN platforms. Joining the recently announced NSM 4150 and NSM 2060, the highdensity NSM 2120 delivers space-efficient capacity in a highly available iSCSI SAN. With a price range of $22K - $32K and a capacity range of 1.8 to 9.0 TBs, the NSM 2120 addresses the market opportunity between the NSM 2060 and the NSM 4150.
From August October 2007, CMS Peripherals and Symantec have run an incentive for their resellers and the CMS sales floor to win a unique holiday to Lapland to visit Santa Claus. All resellers got individual targets and the winners were Barry Harber from Kelway, Kathleen Ann Ball from Viglen, David Hook from Cognitive, Mark Thompson from ATN Consultancy, Lance Williams from Softcat Ltd, Tarak Joshi from Insight and Eric Beyer from PC Ware Technologies. They were accompanied by Ed Dolman from Symantec, Lee Wilson, Ricky Patel, Aidan Sloyan and Julia Radtke from CMS. The group arrived in Lapland minus their luggage but the snow suits provided were a lifesaver. They are available in any colour as long as its blue.
