The Hybrid

o you see what I see? If you have a high-definition television (HDTV), the answer is undoubtedly an enthusiastic Yes. When viewing original HD programming, HDTV owners see a picture five times clearer than the picture seen by their analog friends. An HDTV picture is a picture without ghosts, snow or interference. It is a picture that compels you to tell others about it and have the neighbors over to see. Excitement about HDTV is contagious and once youve caught it, you want to spread it around. But do you also hear what I hear? If you only have an HDTV monitor or set, and not a 5.1 surround sound system, youre only hearing half of the story. And according to research from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) only half of HDTV households pair a surround sound system with the monitor. HDTV without the surround sound experience just isnt true HDTV. And an HDTV set owner without a 5.1 surround sound system is what I call an analog-HDTV hybrid. Certainly not all hybrids are a bad idea. Hybrid vehicles are an honorable engineering feat with real benefits to consumerslower fuel bills and high-occupancy-vehicle privileges for startersso its no wonder those who have one are hybrid car evangelists. But hybrid HDTV households do not share similar bragging rights for they represent an incongruous investment in this entertainment technology wonder. During the SuperBowl (which I know you enjoyed in all its HDTV glory sight and sound) various companies debuted their latest and greatest commercials at a cost of $2.3 million for each 30-second spot. Ranging from humorous to ridiculous, guess which one caught my full attention? The automobile manufacturers ad that used 25 seconds of silence to get noticed and the last 5 seconds to delivery the product

message. Startled by the silence, I looked up to see the screen. Without audio, video loses its full luster. And without 5.1 surround sound, HDTV loses its identity. In February, CBS simulcast The Grammy Awards in HDTV and this program, arguably above all others, demonstrates the hybrid anomaly. Without a 5.1 surround sound system, the shows essence is sapped out. The sounds, the bass, the musicthese make up the star-studded event. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) adopted definitions for standard definition television (SDTV), enhanced definition television (EDTV) and high-definition television (HDTV) and didnt stop with 480p, 720p, 1080i, etc. Yes, lines of resolution delineate categories for video, but look at the HDTV and EDTV definitions and notice how Dolby Digital sound capability elevates these above SDTV. Since the beginning, the industry has identified HDTV by surround sound and since Steamboat Willie American consumers have come to expect audio with their video. So, too, should you expect 5.1 digital surround sound with your HDTV programming and youll need a sound system to take advantage of it. Thats why in this issue of the HDTV Guide, we focus on 5.1 surround sound in the HDTV Programming chart to bring HDTV into proper context. Digital television (DTV) programming cannot be singularly defined by lines of resolution. Nor can it be weighed without consideration of its sound attributes. I encourage you to make your next vehicle a hybrid, but leave it at that. Because its not HDTV without 5.1 digital surround sound.

ven though Ive been in the audio industry for many years and am a long-time champion of 5.1 surround sound, I still have those occasional moments where Im amazed by what todays audio can do. And when it comes to HDTV, audio takes the cake. Whether its the roar of a crowd during the Super Bowl or the bigger than life sound made by the sweeping approach of a fighter jet in a blockbuster Hollywood movie, I still have those moments where I look around the room, completely awed by the experience of highquality audio. Reaction to multichannel sound is rarely tepid, even among adults. The exciting thing is that many of the same audio components used to provide a music-loving audience with the exciting multichannel experienceone that cannot be obtained from two-channel CDsalso delivers the intense 5.1 sound encoded in true HDTV transmissions. Coupled with crisp highdefinition images its no surprise America is asking for more HDTV programming with 5.1 sound. Indeed, multichannel audio is about ready to make the transition from plaything for well-heeled audio connoisseurs to broad-based consumer product. Sensibly enough the industry has committed money and manpower to lure new consumers to high-resolution music sources via what is being called universal DVD players, machines that can play both multi-channel Super Audio CDs (SACDs) and DVD-Audio discs. Both are capable of delivering 5.1-channel music that places you in the center of the action. And thanks to universal format compatibility, listeners no longer will have to choose between DVD-Audio or SACD when purchasing a player. But the industry has overlooked another important and robust market for high-quality 5.1 surround soundthe HDTV consumer. Every day more Americans turn on to the digital revolution buy purchasing HDTVs, clearly convinced that the transition from analog to digital does provide them with a sharper, more engaging entertainment experience. Yet without the proper audio components, theyre missing out on the full benefits of high-definition programming. It is up to us to share the message that high-definition doesnt mean just videoit means high-definition audio, too. Similar to HDTV, a myriad of choices abound in the marketplace, which can be both a blessing and a burden to the unsuspecting consumer. Having already maneuvered through a mountain of definitionsintegrated tuner, 1080i, 16:9 aspect ratio, digital cable-readywe risk turning off HDTV consumers by not including discussions of multichannel sound from the very beginning. For starters, consumers should know that multichannel systems intended primarily for enjoyment of home theater need to meet a somewhat different set of requirements than their hi-fi audio cousins. For example, although two speakers are typical for most hi-fi systems proper enjoyment of the home theater experience requires the addition of speakers and amplifiers for the surround channels. employs surround channels, such as those used for localized special effects, like fly-overs, will certainly convince even the biggest skeptic that multichannel sound completes the HD experience. But again, learning from the lessons of HDTV, presenting consumers with a range of optionsboth pricing and productis key to increased adoption rates. To get the full benefit of true high-definition programming, theres no doubt that consumers should consider additional surround speakers along with a subwoofer to round out the sound. However, purchasing more than two main speakers for many American consumers can be prohibitive for budgetary or cosmetic reasons. It is the industrys best interest to make consumers aware of all the other options, such as electronic components that feature bass management for the high-resolution multi-channel sound. Without bass management, smaller speakers are asked to reproduce bass they were not designed for, nor are capable of producing. The end result is a consumer who still doesnt revel in the quality audio accompanying the HD picture. Bass management allows users to configure the system so that deep bass is sent only to those speakers designed to handle it, reducing distortion and ensuring an optimized home theater experience. Still, all of the efforts we as an industry put forth to educate consumers about multichannel audio and the HDTV experience will be for naught unless broadcasters meet their end of the bargain by broadcasting true high-definition programming that includes 5.1 surround sound from a full-strength signal.
