None of our units proved durable enough to use anywhere else but at home using headphones, connected through USB to the computer.

It seems pretty obvious that most of you giving bad ratings are probably just a bunch of computer illiterate people. I really love the player.

RD2780 Lyra AV FAQs: *** Connections ***
Q: What is the System Tray? The system tray refers to the task bar area on your PCs monitor, which typically resides in the lower right hand corner. Both the Lyra icon ( ) and the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon (Safely Remove Storage Device in some OSs) ( or ) will appear in the system tray when connected to your PC. Q: Do I need to turn on my Lyra AV Jukebox before I connect it to my computer? Yes. This will ensure the unit establishes a valid USB connection with the PC. Q: Why does USB Safe Mode appear on my Lyra AV Jukebox screen when connecting the device to the computer? When powering on the Lyra AV Jukebox after connecting the USB cable to your computer, it will enter USB Safe Mode. USB Safe Mode is only required / recommended when you are updating the system files or firmware downloaded from the www.rca.com/lyra-avdownloads or when the existing system files on the Lyra RD2780 have become corrupted and do not allow the device to boot up to normal operation. It is recommended that you power On the Lyra AV Jukebox device before connecting it to your USB cable for normal file transfer operations. Q: Why must I use the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon in the system tray before disconnecting the USB cable? Most Windows operating systems (98SE, Me and 2000) do not have the ability to quick disconnect a USB device without removing the USB connection via the system tray. To do this, move your mouse/pointer to the system tray and locate the icon ( or ) that displays safely remove storage device or Unplug or Eject Hardware when the pointer hovers over it. Click on that system tray icon and select the Lyra AV Jukebox player for safe removal. Q: Can I configure Windows XP for USB quick removal? Yes. Follow the steps below: Turn on your Lyra AV Jukebox and connect it to your computer via the USB cable. Right Click the My Computer icon on the Windows XP desktop or click Start from the main menu, and right click on the My Computer listing. Select Properties from the menu.
Click the Hardware tab, and then the Device Manager tab in the Device Manager field. Locate the Disk Drives field, and expand it by clicking on the + sign. Locate the Thomson RD2780 Player USB Device and right click it. Select Properties from the open window. From the Properties box, select the Policies tab. Select the Optimize for Quick Removal selection. Click OK. Close the Device Manager and the System Properties Windows. Your Windows XP operating system is now configured for safe quick removal of the RD2780. Q: How do I know which is the correct Lyra drive in My Computer on my PC? When you connect your Lyra AV Jukebox device to your computer, the computer will assign a drive letter to both the Lyra AV Jukeboxs internal hard drive and the Lyra AV Jukeboxs external Compact Flash port. Both drives will show up in My Computer or Windows Explorer as Removable Disk with a drive letter associated with it. Typically, the first new drive added is the Lyra AV Jukeboxs hard drive and the second is the Lyra AV Jukeboxs Compact Flash port. Q: Why cant I find the drive letters for the Lyra AV Jukebox when it is connected to my computer? The drive letter(s) associated with the Lyra AV Jukebox might be associated/assigned to a drive letter already in use by another hard drive, volume, or network drive. If you have properly installed the included USB drivers (Windows 98SE and Windows Me) and there are no conflicts within the Device Manager (See configuring Windows XP for USB quick removal), then you might need to remap the drive letter to a new drive letter not in use. Please see Windows help for more information on mapping drive letters.
*** File Management and Profiling ***
Q: How do I profile Audio Content? From your PC, with the Lyra AV Jukebox device connected, right click the Lyra icon ( ) from the system tray. From the Lyra Jukebox System Tray menu, select Profile Device Contents to start profiling and sorting contents. Note: If more than one Lyra AV Jukebox is connected to your computer, you will be prompted to select the corresponding drive you want to profile. Click Done when profiling is complete.
Note: Video and Photos content will appear in the Navigation menus based on the folder/file structures in the VIDEO and PHOTOS system folder. Profiling of Video and Photos content is not necessary. Q: When I drag and drop content to the subfolders on the PC, they dont show up in the associated folder on the Lyra. Why is this? If you didnt use MusicMatch to copy your mp3 audio files, you must run the Lyra profiler (go to the Lyra icon ( ) and select Profile Device Contents), so that the Lyra can recognize them. Video files MUST be stored in the Video subfolder off the root of the Lyra AV Jukebox device. Photo files MUST be stored in the Photos subfolder off the root of the Lyra AV Jukebox device. Q: Why should I profile my Audio content? Profiling the audio content on your Lyra AV Jukebox creates the necessary sorting categories (Artist, Album, Genre, etc. from id3 tags) so your Lyra AV Jukebox can understand it. Without profiling, the Lyra AV Jukebox will simply act as a mass storage device; any new audio content will NOT be displayed in audio mode. Q: Why doesnt the Lyra AV Jukebox automatically profile my Audio content? Unless audio is transferred through MusicMatch, using the software and plug-in supplied on the CD-ROM, the device is not capable of automatically profiling your audio. If you are transferring audio content via methods other than MusicMatch Jukebox, you must click the Lyra icon and choose the Profile Device Contents to profile your content. Q: When I move content from Files to another folder within the Lyra AV Jukebox, how do I know it was successful? An hourglass will be displayed on-screen. When the move is complete, the hourglass will disappear and the moved files will be highlighted on the display. The valid audio files will show up in the folder you moved them to. If audio files were moved, you will need to profile the audio contents. Q: Why doesnt my Lyra AV Jukebox recognize my Compact Flash Memory Card? Your Compact Flash Memory Card must first be formatted in Windows using FAT16 format. The default Windows XP format, FAT32, will not work at this time. When formatting your Compact Flash Memory Card, always select the option enabling FAT16.

NOTE: FAT16 is displayed as FAT in the Windows 2000 and Windows XP format utility. Q: Can I copy/move files from the Lyra AV Jukebox to the Compact Flash Memory Card? Yes. To transfer content from the Lyra AV Jukebox device to the compact flash memory card, you must first connect the device, via the USB cable, to your computer. If youre using a PC, look for an additional Removable Disk drive under My Computer or Windows Explorer to locate the Compact Flash memory card. If youre using a Mac, look on your desktop for an additional drive. Then, by opening the Compact Flash Removable Disk folder and the Lyra AV Jukebox Folder, files can be drag and dropped to the Flash Card from the Lyra AV Jukebox device. Q: Why cant I to play Video or Audio files directly from the Compact Flash Memory Card? The Lyra AV Jukebox only allows jpeg (.jpg) photo content to be displayed from the Compact Flash Memory Card. Because of the memory and processing requirements, all other file types must be copied from the Compact Flash Memory Card to the device. Q: How do I transfer Audio or Video files from the Compact Flash Memory Card to my Lyra AV Jukebox? From the main menu of the Lyra AV Jukebox, highlight and select the Files option, then select the Compact Flash option. Press the right arrow to view the files on the Compact Flash memory card. Press the SELECT button once you have chosen the file you want to move. Select the Move To option to move the file to the appropriate directory and/or sub directory. Confirm the move by pressing SELECT a second time. Please keep in mind that files must be placed into their appropriate directories in order for the device to correctly play them. Audio files must be profiled, using the Lyra icon ( ) in the system tray, after moving them from the Compact Flash memory card to the Lyra AV Jukebox (for information on profiling your Lyra A/V Jukebox). Q: How do I know when transfers from my PC to the Lyra are complete? When data is being transferred to the device, the Lyra AV Jukebox screen will flash, Transfer in Progress. The application being used to transfer the data (Windows Explorer, My Computer, MusicMatch Jukebox, etc.) should also indicate the progress of the transfer. To verify a transfer, use Windows Explorer, My Computer, or your desktop (Mac users) to find the file transferred to the

device. Be sure the original and the transferred file are the same file size before you disconnect the device. NOTE: Do NOT disconnect the USB cable during data transfers! Q: Songs arent listed in any of the audio sort modes (Album, Genre, Title, Audio Files). The audio contents of the Lyra AV Jukebox havent been profiled (sorted) since the last file transfer. From the Lyra Jukebox System Tray Application on your PC, select the Profile Device Contents option to sort (profile) the audio contents of the hard drive. The icon in the system tray looks like this (for information on profiling your Lyra AV Jukebox). Q: Why doesnt the Lyra automatically recognize Video, Audio, and Photo content and assign them to the appropriate folders on the Lyra? Because of the massive storage capacity of the Lyra AV Jukebox, the device isnt capable of this. Video files MUST be stored in the Video sub folder of the Lyra AV Jukebox. Photo content must be stored in the Photos sub folder of the Lyra AV Jukebox. Note: Sub folders can be created under each of the three main folders to further sort and manage your files. Example; My summer vacation, graduation 2003, our first picnic, could be created under the Photos folder. This would allow you to locate and navigate specific folders much more quickly. Q: How do I create new folders? To create new folders on your Lyra AV Jukebox, connect the device to your computer and use a program such as Windows Explorer My Computer or the Mac desktop to create new folders on the device. Q: Video files added to the hard drive through Windows Explorer via drag and drops do not appear in Video navigation mode. Video content must be stored on the hard drive in the VIDEO system folder in order to be properly recognized and available for playback. Sub-folders may be created under the VIDEO system folder for easy navigation and organization of your video files. Q: Photo files added to the hard drive through Windows Explorer via drag and drop do not appear in Photos navigation mode. Photo content must be stored on the hard drive in the PHOTOS system folder in order to be properly recognized and available for playback. Sub-folders may
be created under the PHOTOS system folder for easy navigation and organization of your photo files. Q: Audio files added to the hard drive through Windows Explorer via drag and drops do not appear in Audio navigation sorting categories (Artist, Album, Genre, etc.). The audio content of the Lyra AV Jukebox hasnt been profiled. From the Lyra Jukebox System Tray Application on your PC, select the Profile Device Contents option to sort (profile) the contents of the hard drive (for information on profiling your Lyra AV Jukebox). Q: The Lyra Jukebox Profiler application icon tray. doesnt appear in the system

You can restart Windows to auto-launch the application, or you can double-click or run the Lyra Jukebox executable file thats in the Lyra Jukebox sub-folder of the installation directory that was specified during the setup process (Example Directory: C:\Program Files\Thomson\LyraJukebox\LyraHDTrayApp\LyraHD2TrayApp.exe). If the problem persists, you might need to reinstall the Lyra AV Jukebox software Q: When using the Lyra AV Jukebox with my MAC, I can not delete my files. If the "Locked" flag is set on the file, you will not be able to delete your files. To check for this and change the flag, follow these steps: Open the Lyra AV Jukebox volume icon on the desktop. Navigate to the folder containing the files you wish to delete. Highlight one or all of the file(s) in the folder. Right-click on one of the highlighted file(s) to display the file information and select the Get Info menu item. From the Info dialog, clear (uncheck) the Locked item. (If multiple items are selected with mixed flags, the Locked checkbox may appear with a dash (-) character. You may have to click on the control several times to clear it). Close the Information dialog. Return back to the LyraAV volume on the desktop. The files are now unlocked and can be deleted.

*** Video ***

Q: What is an.avi file?
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave and has been defined by Microsoft. It is the most common format for Audio/Video data on the PC. The Lyra AV Jukebox plays.avi files that contain mpeg4-sp video and mp3 audio compression formats. Q: Why cant I transfer other Video file types from my PC to the Lyra? At this time, the Lyra AV Jukebox only plays.avi files that contain mpeg4-sp video and mp3 audio compression formats. Q: What are DivX 4/5 codecs and why are they important to me? The Lyra AV Jukebox plays back mpeg4-sp content created with the DIVX4/5 Codec. Please see the Video Compatibility Checklist for more details. Q: What is the Video Compatibility Checklist? If you create your own.avi files on your PC or Mac to playback on the Lyra AV Jukebox, use this chart: Video Resolution Type VGA QVGA Video Resolution (Lines) 640 x x 240 Maximum Video Bit Rate 1 Mbps 1.5 Mbps Maximum Audio Sampling Rate 32Khz 44.1Khz Maximum Audio Bit Rate 96Kbps 128Kbps
Q: Some.AVI video files do not play on my Lyra AV Jukebox. Make sure the video is encoded in MPEG4 and the audio is encoded in mp3 audio. The.AVI files may be encoded in audio/video formats that are not currently supported by the Lyra AV Jukebox device. File AUDIO PHOTOS VIDEO Supported File Formats Mp3 JPEG, JPG AVI Supported Video Codec Format MPEG4-SP

Q: My video picture doesnt fill up the entire LCD screen. The mathematical aspect ratio should be 4:3. If the video you recorded was created from the computer, for example, the video frame size should be set to
320 pixels (width) by 240 pixels (height). This will ensure optimal video playback on both the Lyra device LCD screen as well as on a regular 4:3 TV screen. Note: Changing to a 4:3 aspect ratio may change the original videos aspect ratio. Q: Why are my photos not filling up the entire LCD screen? The photo size should have a 4:3 aspect ratio such as 640 pixels (width) by 480 pixels (height) for optimal photo playback. Q: How do I stop content from playing on the Lyra AV Jukebox (where is the STOP button)? Use the Stop button (labeled On/Off) on the top of the Lyra AV Jukebox. Press and release the button quickly to stop playback. Q: When I record video with my Lyra AV Jukebox, why does it create.ASF files? The Lyra AV Jukebox has built in recording software, which creates a very specific video/audio format. For easy of playback of these files, the files are wrapped in an.asf extension. While these internally created files can be played back on both the Lyra AV Jukebox and by using Windows Media Player software, the format is not a fixed format. External sources of.asf files are not guaranteed to playback at all through the Lyra AV Jukebox. Q: What is the.ASF format? The Advanced Systems Format (ASF) is the file format used by Windows Media. Audio and/or Video content compressed with a wide variety of codecs can be stored in an ASF file and played back with the Windows Media Player software, streamed with Windows Media Services or optionally packaged with Windows Media Rights Manager. Q: What is the maximum recording time for a single video file I want to record on the Lyra AV Jukebox? The Lyra AV Jukebox allows Video recording sessions of up to approximately 9 hours in LP - Low mode, 7 hours in SP - Med mode and 5 hours in HQ - High mode.
