mastering the Spa track from the Raidillon de lEau Rouge to La Source, with two polepositions and two race wins, you could hardly say the Alps-born French driver had an easy time of it. A minor collision in race one left him under pressure from Matthieu Lahaye (Tech 1 Racing). In Sunday's race, he had to hold off Swiss driver Jonathan Hirschi at the start of the race, before grafting his way to victory. But it is often in difficult situations that the best come into their own. From that point of view, Rossi made the perfect start to the season!

Hopes of a win for the young driver, aged just 18, started to develop in qualifying when he took a fine pole position. On a track that was drying out rapidly, he chose just the right moment to put on slicks." On race day, in the rain, Charles Pic demonstrated total control. Championship leader Giedo Van der Garde (P1 Motorsport) was a threat early on, driving on Pics tail. However, Van der Garde played it safe towards the end of the race, preferring to settle for second place rather than to run any big risks on this treacherous circuit, where the slightest error can spell disaster. And so Charles Pic scooped his first win in Formula Renault 3.5 Series, ahead of Giedo Van der Garde and Fairuz Fauzy, the Malaysian making a remarkable comeback to the category. After receiving his trophy from Carlos Ghosn, Charles Pic still kept his feet on the ground, focusing on the season ahead. Its brilliant to have won at Monaco, but just because Ive won one race doesnt mean it will all start to happen. I have to be consistent and keep putting in the hours in order to win more races.

Quand Dieppe ouvre ses portes > Dieppe plant opens its doors
In response to increasing demand, Renault Sport is now offering its customers the option of collecting their new car straight from the production site. Muriel Borragan, Staff Sales Manager, has involved herself personally in the project. The Alpine plant at Dieppe is more than just a factory. It has a rich heritage and an iconic status that we want to share, she explains. We often had requests for plant visits. That was what gave us the idea of offering Renault Sport customers the option of on-site collection' in Dieppe. The first customers picked up their cars in November. Dozens have followed since then. As the word spreads, more and more people are taking advantage of this free optional-extra. On arrival, the happy customers are welcomed by factory personnel. Next, they are taken on a tour of the inner sanctum by Olivier Berthelot, Head of Communications at the plant: We show them our production facilities, and visitors can get a feeling of just how much passion and rigour goes into assembling our cars. They always seem impressed by the scale of human involvement here, as opposed to factories where most of the production is performed by robots. Then comes the delivery itself, as the keys are handed over to the customer by Roger Ringot, Plant Director. A swift run-through of the ins and outs of the car is then offered, before the customers make their way home behind the wheel of their brand new Renault Sport! Our customers often call to tell us that they have arrived home safely and to thank us again for their time at the factory. They come from all over France to see the site, adds Muriel Borragan. So far we have had nothing but positive feedback. Visiting the plant gives people a real insight into the passion that drives us. These experiences strengthen our relationship with our customers. It was as part of the on-site collection in Dieppe option that the 20,000th Mgane Renault Sport was presented to a delighted customer by Roger Ringot and Rmi Deconinck, Managing Director of Renault Sport Technologies.

How was your visit to the Dieppe site?
We arrived yesterday evening from Bordeaux. This morning we visited the factory, its fascinating. You see how the vehicles are assembled and all the organization that that requires. Everyone in the factory team was very friendly, it was a great experience.
Youll be driving away in the 20,000th Mgane Renault Sport, what does that mean to you? Ill never sell it! I chose the Mgane Renault Sport Luxe, but when I ordered it, I had no idea that it would be the 20,000th. Im a Renault Sport fanatic, Ive had Clios before, including a Clio Renault Sport 2.0 16v Ragnotti. I keep all my cars and Im hoping to start my own Renault Sport collection.
So youll remember this moment? "Yes, for a long time! Im proud and honoured to have come and collected my car like this. Its my first trip to Dieppe, and I hope Ill have the chance to come back. I was already a Renault Sport devotee before I came here, but now my passion has reached a whole new level."

A la rencontre des futurs clients > In search of future customers

What is the best way of enjoying the handling qualities of Mgane F1 Team R26? How can you gauge the potential of Clio World Series by Renault or Laguna GT on a fast bend or when braking hard? By testing them on a track, of course! This observation was the starting point for Renault Sport Technologies to come up with the concept of the Renault Sport Test Centre. Seven tracks were visited in spring of this year, including Nogaro, Abbeville, Lohac and Paul Ricard HTTT. Supported by advice from driving instructors, almost 1,700 people have so far experienced the variety of the Renault Sport range in complete safety. In groups of 60, potential customers have a half day to test, assess and enjoy the entire Renault Sport line-up. "Clio F1 Team R27, Clio Renault Sport World Series by Renault, Mgane F1 Team R26, Mgane Renault Sport dCi and Laguna GT: all of our models are available to customers. They can switch from one to
another and compare the cars totally impartially", emphasizes Jrme Fauchet, the event organizer. Renault Sport Technologies has put together a team of six experienced instructors to support potential customers, managed by training and instructor management expert Dominique Depons. Two types of course are available: a performance course and technology course, whose purpose is to highlight the efficiency of the driver assistance systems. "The sessions start with a short and informal briefing", explains Dominique Depons. "Our aim is not to turn ordinary drivers into racing drivers. We just want to set out the basic principles of safety and give them advice that they can use on a day-to-day basis. Basically, we help them to enjoy driving as much as possible."

Cest pour cela que nous basons une part importante de notre stratgie sur les Centres dessais. Comment cette opration est-elle perue par le Rseau Renault ? Nous travaillons main dans la main puisque les stagiaires sont invits par les concessionnaires. Les Centres dessais participent au processus de vente des voitures, mais aussi limage de marque de Renault en gnral et Renault Sport en particulier. Nous mesurerons bientt limpact commercial, mais nous tirons dj un bilan trs positif de cette opration.

Laguna GT a fait lobjet dun trs gros travail en commun entre RST et lingnierie Renault. Le rsultat, cest une base de trs grande qualit, avec en plus un systme 4 RD dont les apports en confort et en scurit sont sensibles mme pour un conducteur non averti. Elle sadresse une clientle trs diverse, qui veut profiter de toutes les qualits de Laguna, look, qualit, quipements, un niveau encore suprieur. Un temps darrt, et il ajoute : La GT est une Laguna intense Laguna had already set the standard in its category for driving pleasure. Laguna GT raises the bar higher still, thanks to its four-wheel Active Drive chassis. Ever since cars were invented, manufacturers have been constantly faced with the same dilemma: emphasize comfort or handling. "You can obtain a very comfortable ride with very good road-holding", comments Frdric Lenindre, Ground Link Technology Engineering Centre Manager. "The tricky bit is adding the 'pleasure' part, which implies mobility, particularly when changing direction." Rear-wheel drive systems are better equipped to provide this kind of mobility, but they invariably do so at the expense of stability. Stability has long been one of the intrinsic features of all Renault cars. And New Laguna is no exception to
that rule, recognized as "best in class" in terms of stability. So, was Renault attempting the impossible? Not with the Active Drive chassis used for the first time on Laguna GT. Responsive and precise handling offer drivers complete control, setting new standards for driving pleasure. Journalists from the specialist press were unanimous in their praise for Laguna GT. The secret to Renault's success came down to use of 4WD, or "four-wheel drive". In the 1980s and 1990s, several Japanese manufacturers released four-wheel drive vehicles. Results were, however, less than conclusive. Technological progress has radically changed the systems. "Earlier systems were either mechanical or only partly computer-controlled", recalls Philippe Mrime, Dynamic Performance Tryout Manager. "On Laguna GT, a specific ECU is in constant communication with the ESP control unit. The wheels react according to the angle of the steering wheel and the speed at which it is turned. The wheel angles are managed in a genuinely dynamic fashion; the system 'reads' the driving style and road conditions." So, it's a real sports car, then? "No, a real GT," insists Frdric Lenindre. "RST and Renault's Engineering department worked very closely together on Laguna GT. The result is that we have a car with a very high-quality base, and also a 4WD system that offers significant benefits in terms of comfort and safety, perceptible even to uninitiated drivers. The car appeals to a very diverse set of customers, but they all want to enjoy Laguna's features, styling, quality and equipment at an even higher level." After a brief pause, he adds: "The GT is an intense Laguna"

These figures are backed up by Kurt Mollekens, New Mgane Trophy development driver for Renault Sport Technologies. New Mgane Trophy is much more playful than the previous version" explains Kurt Mollekens. "On different circuits, such as Nogaro, Dijon or the Paul Ricard, the car immediately handled with ease. Even in difficult track conditions it is fast and agile. The car responds well to changes in the setup, an element which is essential for a race car." Certain values are not changed : the rear mid-mounted 3.5-litre 24V V6 engine, the semi-automatic gearbox with steering wheel-mounted gearshift, all of the mechanical elements,
the tubular chassis have been kept. Thanks to a new intake manifold, the engine power has increased by 30bhp, rising to 360bhp. "The engine is powerful at any speed; you can really feel the increase in horsepower. It has obviously improved the vehicles performance, but also its driving pleasure." Kurt Mollekens continuesNew Mgane Trophy is still reliable, like the previous version. New Mgane Trophy is sold as a kit to be adapted on current cars. The modifications will be made at the Alpine plant in Dieppe. The kit will be sold at 38,000 euros, whilst a new complete vehicle will be sold at 138,000 euros. Cela a demand beaucoup defforts et de coordination, notamment entre le design, la conception et la ralisation, mais le rsultat est la hauteur. Dvoiler Nouvelle Mgane Trophy au Mondial de lAutomobile de Paris a t une

belle rcompense. Nous avons reu de nombreux messages de flicitations. Revenez sur toute la phase de conception de ce nouveau modle. Il vous a fallu moins dun an pour crer Nouvelle Mgane Trophy ? Nous avons eu le feu vert pour ce projet en dcembre 2007. De janvier mars, un processus Design classique avec mise en concurrence de designers a t lanc. La tche ntait pas simple : il fallait une voiture plus performante avec tout ce qui a fait le succs du modle prcdent. La principale problmatique tait de coller au design de Nouvelle Mgane Coup pour quen voyant Nouvelle Mgane Trophy, on pense immdiatement Nouvelle Mgane Coup ! partir de cette directive, nous avons men un dveloppement en troite collaboration entre le design et le calcul, grce la CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics). Il y a eu beaucoup dinteractions constructives entre les diffrents intervenants, une grande ractivit. La voiture a t prsente en octobre et le programme de dveloppement en piste a immdiatement suivi. Jean-Pascal, lets take a look at the genesis of this project. How do you see this achievement of having released both a normal and a competition car at the same time? Its the strength of the New Mgane Trophy. It required a lot of effort and coordination, particularly between the styling, design and the production phases, but the results more than meet expectations. It was great unveiling New Mgane Trophy at the Paris Motor Show. People were drawn to it and impressed by our achievement. We have received many congratulatory messages. Its a fantastic reward for our efforts.
Going back to the design phase of this new model, it took you less than a year to create New Mgane Trophy? We received the go-ahead for this project in December 2007. From January to March, a standard design process with a bidding process for designers was launched. It was not a simple task, we needed a higher performance car whilst at the same time retaining all the features which made the previous model so successful. The main problem was sticking to the style of New Mgane Coup. By seeing New Mgane Trophy, we want immediately associate it with New Mgane Coup! Based on this guiding principle, we developed close collaboration between the design and computation teams through CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). There was a lot of constructive interaction between the different participants and a high level of responsiveness.
We presented the car in October and then immediately started work on the track development programme.

Nouvelle Mgane Trophy : aussi belle quefficace. >New Mgane Trophy is as beautiful as it is efficient.
Nouvelle Mgane Trophy permet davoir une plage dutilisation du moteur plus large et plus agrable. Les composants internes du moteur nont pas t modifis pour limiter les cots. Le nouveau collecteur dadmission a permis de gagner 30 ch. Volontairement, nous avons utilis le moteur de la voiture de dveloppement qui avait dj plus de 3500 km au compteur. Nous avons effectu 2000 km dessais sans rencontrer le moindre problme. Sachant que la rvision dun
moteur est prvue tous les 5500 km, il tait intressant pour nous de tester notre moteur jusqu cette limite. Lobjectif est russi, la voiture est-elle plus efficace ? Nous avons gagn en trane arodynamique et pour la premire fois nous atteignons le rupteur fond de sixime, ce qui ntait pas le cas auparavant. La voiture est plus efficace, mais elle est galement trs bien finie. Le travail ralis par Tork Engineering est de trs bonne qualit avec un niveau de finition remarquable ncessaire avec un tel design. Nouvelle Mgane Trophy est aussi belle quefficace. chaque sortie, cette voiture attire les regards. Le programme de dveloppement est maintenant termin, place la production !
The initial aim was to validate all of the work carried out during the design phase by the design office. We were quickly able to measure the improvement in performance brought about by the new aerodynamic setup more precise, which is automatically reflected in the performance. We also worked really hard with the development drivers. Kurt Mollekens took part in all of the sessions. He shared the wheel of the New Mgane Trophy with Sbastien Philippe, Pedro Petiz and Laurent Hurgon. Feedback from these drivers enabled us to work on the handling of the car and the basic setup, whilst also making some enhancements. Is the increase in engine power also a key factor? The development made possible by Solution F paid off. The new intake system we developed for New Mgane Trophy gives a wider, better engine power band. The engines internal components were not changed to avoid incurring substantial costs. Thanks to the
new intake manifold, we have gained 30 bhp. We deliberately used the engine from the development car which had already clocked more than 3,500 kilometers. We performed 2,000 kilometers of tests without encountering any problems. Bearing in mind that an engine is serviced every 5,500 kilometers, it was a valuable exercise for us to test our engine to this limit. Was the objective was achieved? Is the car more efficient? We have improved its aerodynamic drag and for the first time we hit the rev limiter in sixth gear, which has never happened before. The car is more efficient and it also has a quality finish. Tork Engineering did a top quality job with a remarkable level of finish, necessary for this kind of a design. New Mgane Trophy is as beautiful as it is efficient. Its a really eye-catching car. Now the development programme is over, its time for production!

for his teammate. Clearly in control in these tricky conditions, Bottas took his fifth win of the season to claim the title. The next day, despite Ricciardo claiming his sixth win of the season, Bottas did enough, finishing fourth to claim the title at the end of a thrilling and highly competitive season.

A win for Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing) in the first race, combined with the consistency of Fabio Carbone and Esteban Guerrieri (Ultimate Signature) and a return to form for Miguel Molina (Prema Powerteam) meant the teams championship was once again wide open. Estoril was in the same vein. Carbone and Molina both claimed a win, while the Tech 1 Racing drivers Julien Jousse and Charles Pic notched up valuable points. More low-key, Giedo Van der Garde did what he had to do for the 2008 Drivers title. The meeting at Barcelona would be all important in the teams title as well as for coveted runner-up title in the drivers championship. The final swung in favour of Julien Jousse and Tech 1 Racing. Having finished five times on the podium, Jousse finally claimed victory. Finishing in fifth place the following day, the Frenchman was rewarded for his consistency with second place in the overall standings. And he had further cause for celebration when, despite victory for Esteban Guerrieri in the last race of the season, the Teams title was bestowed on Tech 1 Racing for the second year running. Simon Abadies team is the first to take the Formula Renault 3.5 Series title on two occasions.

Is F1 still your ultimate goal? "Absolutely! Ive just had a good season and this Formula Renault 3.5 Series title is going to open many doors in the future. Over the past few seasons, I have always been competitive with highs and lows, of course, because in motor sport, the pieces of the puzzle never seem to fit together perfectly! Les mthodes sont globalement proches de ce que je connaissais en Formula Renault 3.5 Series, mais tout est plus pouss et technologique.
