BP2 Assessment of global oil and gas resources
Keynote Speakers: Dr. Donald Gautier, Geologist, US Geological Survey, USA Prof. Alexey Kontorovich, Director, Research Institute for Oil and Gas Geology, Russian Federation Dr. Yves Mathieu, International Expert on Oil and Gas Reserves, IFP, France Chair: Dr. Michael Naylor, VP Exploration Technical, Shell Exploration & Production, Netherlands One of the most challenging questions in our industry is the assessment of the oil and gas resources yet to be discovered. A global scale assessment project has been conducted under the auspices of the USGSs World Energy Project. In this session the main ndings and conclusions of this exercise will be discussed by representatives from various institutions involved in the study, including the quality (reservoir rock, reservoir/structural architecture, uid composition) of the hydrocarbons to be discovered, the technical and nancial challenges of future hydrocarbon provinces (including but not restricted to frontier areas) and the methodology of the assessment.

Round Tables
RT1 Chasing the 3rd trillion
Moderator: Mr. Khaled Buraik, Chief Petroleum Engineer, Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia Panellists: Mr. Ashok Belani, Chief Technology Ofcer, Schlumberger Mr. David Boone, President, Escavar Energy, Canada Mr. Donald Gautier, Geologist, US Geological Survey, USA Dr. Robert Skinner, Senior Vice President, Commercial and Business Development, StatoilHydro, Canada The world has roughly one trillion STB of oil reserves; another one trillion has already been produced. As the energy demand increases, our industry needs to nd and produce more oil. Both nding and producing the future reserves present unique challenges. The easy to nd oil is already discovered. Innovative technologies in Geophysics, drilling, production and enhanced oil recovery need to be developed and adapted if our industry is to meet this challenge. This session will focus on providing a vision for the E&P landscape leading to the discovery of the third trillion STB of oil reserves.
RT2 Reporting of reserves and resources
Moderator: Dr. Sigurd Heiberg, Project Manager, StatoilHydro and Chairperson, UNECE Ad Hoc Group of Experts on the Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology, Norway Panellists: Mr. William Cobb, William M. Cobb & Associates,2008 SPE President , USA Mr. Andrei V. Gaidamaka, Deputy Vice President and Director Strategic Development, Lukoil, Russia H.E. Yahya Shinawi, Director General, Eastern Province Branch of Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia Ms. Charlotte Grifths, Programme Ofcer, Sustainable Energy Division UN Economic, Commission for Europe, Switzerland Dr. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist, International Energy Agency, France Mr. Michael Lynch-Bell, Partner in Charge Global Energy, Ernst & Young, UK In the free-market environment one of the key performance indicators of the listed oil and gas companies for the investors is the quantity, replacement and growth of the proved reserve base. For the national governments and authorities, the resource base is equally crucial information for planning, dening national budgets, securing security of supply and establishing policies that stimulate investment and protect consumers. However, current codes to report reserves and resources lack a universal standard and, in many cases, were not updated to reect advances in technology. The lack of clear and universally accepted rules may lead to the reporting of reserve gures that are not directly comparable to each other, subject to discretionary interpretation and, as seen in the recent past, substantial revisions. One of the most damaging consequences of this is the loss of credibility in reserves reports and the market volatility associated with uncertainties in the reserves and resources base. The UNECE with the collaboration of the global professional associations in the Earth Sciences and with the IASB has been active since the late 1990s to develop a Common Code of Classication and Reporting. In this session high prole authorities and experts will discuss the latest achievements and progress on reserves and resources reporting.
RT3 Hydrocarbons in ultra deep reservoirs
Moderator: Mr. Paul Siegele, Vice President, Strategic Planning, Chevron North America, USA Panellists: Mr. Anatoliy Dmitrievsky, Director, Institute of Oil and Gas of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia Mr. Randall Miller, President Integrated Reservoir Solutions, Corelab, USA Mr. Dave Rainey, Vice President Gulf of Mexico Exploration, BP, USA Mr. ivind Reinertsen, President, StatoilHydro North America, USA Mr. Tony D. Vaughn, Vice President and General Manager, Gulf Division, Devon Energy, USA Mr. Tsutomu Matsuoka, General Manager, Mazda Research Center, Japan The need to satisfy the growing thirst of the world for hydrocarbons brings exploration to deeper and more difcult prospects. We are now drilling very deep wells onshore and offshore, and have discovered, to our surprise, producible reservoirs below previously assumed basements. Ultra deep reservoirs, ranging between 25,000 to 35,000 feet have tested porosities up to 20%. The panellists will discuss what conditions cause the preservation of porosity, inhibition of diagenetic cementation and depression of geothermal gradients thought to be responsible for this unique geological phenomenon. Can we predict them? Are there more hydrocarbons below our previous assumed economic basement?

Block 3: Natural Gas & Renewables
BP7 Role of renewables in the supply mix
Keynote Speakers: Mr. Alexandre Penna Rodrigues, Executive Manager of Energy Solutions, Petrobras Distribuidora, Brazil Mr. Xabier Viteri, Head of Renewable Energies Unit, Iberdrola, Spain Chair: Mr. Gord Lambert, VP Sustainable Development, Suncor Energy, Canada Energy supplies from renewable sources provide signicant environmental and supply diversity bene ts. However, the share of demand met by renewable energy sources remains small despite the rise in worldwide energy demand, rising energy prices and market development policies in many countries. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the contribution of renewables (hydro, wind, solar plus biomass and geothermal) to the energy supply mix in IEA countries is only about 5.5% as measured in 2001. Nevertheless, the growth rate in wind and solar energy supply has been in excess of 20% per year for more than 20 years, albeit starting from a low base. This best practice session will be provocative and present a range of views on the current and future contribution of renewable sources of energy and the challenges and opportunities that suppliers and society will face in realizing the full potential of this supply source.
BP8 Review of Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) technologies
Keynote Speakers: Mr. Lean Strauss, Group General Manager, Sasol, South Africa Dr. Jack Jacometti, VP Global GTL Development, Shell Gas & Power, Netherlands Chair: Mr. Mishal Jabor Al-Thani, Economic Research Assistant, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Conversion of Gas to Liquids (GTL) is slowly expanding as an alternative means to monetize gas resources while producing clean synthetic diesel oil. Syndiesel may have a more prominent role in the marketplace as it may be also produced from coal and biomass through similar processing routes. The paper will review the variety of currently constructed commercial plants, the future projects and the relevance of Syndiesel with regards to new diesel engine technologies.
BP9 Gas transportation challenges
Keynote Speakers: Dr. Pedro Mir, President, Medgaz and Vice President E&P, Cepsa, Spain Prof. Dr. Gennady Vasiliev, Head of Department, Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, Russia Chair: Ms. Rebecca B. Roberts, President, Chevron Pipeline Company, USA A variety of factors, including enhanced availability, regional distribution, pricing and environmental concerns have led to increased global trade in natural gas. LNG and pipeline have driven nations and companies to tie up capacity in ship building and sign-up contracts across boundaries for erection of transnational pipelines. A full discussion on transportation of gas requires perspectives on additional capacity creation in the carriers and large fund commitment on one hand, and contractual, legal and technical aspects of the two principal modes of transportation on the other. The comfort of the lending institutions, E&P companies, and a well developed international contractual regime to address all concerns is essential to monetize gas reservoirs and meet the demand for energy. In this session successful case histories for the two main gas transportation modes, LNG and pipeline, will be discussed to illustrate how gas transportation challenges have been dealt with.
