system alternates between producing a set number of pages of a copy job and a set number of pages of a print job, is a fifth option. When job order is set as the priority mode, jobs are handled on a first-in, first-out basis, which BLI technicians find to be the most efficient. When copy is the priority, a print job pauses to output a copy job and then resumes; similarly, when print is established as the priority, a copy job that is running will pause to allow output of a print job. The Interrupt hard key can be used to interrupt either a copy or a print job to program a copy job with access to all features. A print job is interrupted immediately, while copy jobs continue until the Start key is pressed, which is more efficient. Once the interrupt job is complete, the interrupted job automatically resumes.

Administrative Utilities

VERY GOOD
SmartDeviceMonitor allows configuring and monitoring of the unit and other Ricoh devices on the network from a client PC. The version for administrators also monitors other manufacturers devices on the network, but it provides more detailed information on Ricoh devices.
SmartDeviceMonitor provides real-time status information on the Aficio 3260C, including busy/idle, paper and toner levels and the current setup.
SmartDeviceMonitorAdministrator Version
E-mail alerts, although not sent to users upon copy or print job completion, are sent to the administrator or up to four key operators when an error occurs with the Aficio 3260C or consumables are depleted. Electronic meter reads that track the total number of copies, prints and scans printed are available through SmartDeviceMontior. The units embedded Web pageWeb Image Monitorenables administrators to monitor and manage the Aficio 3260C via a Web browser. Web Image Monitor allows users to view and manage files on the systems Document Server, plus manage user data in the units e-mail address book and scan-to-folder locations. The Web utility has a Printer Job History page that enables users to view print jobs that have been processed, as well as jobs in the queue. Ricoh makes plug-ins for HP Web Jetadmin available for its product line so administrators who already use this popular utility to manage their HP printers on the network can also use it to manage their Ricoh devices. Although DeskTopBinder Lite allows for direct printing of PDF files without having the application they were created in open, users must have the PostScript option enabled. Moreover, PDF Direct Print offers pop-up message for job status and error warnings. Ricohs @Remote, which enables automated meter readings, is available for this model but only with the Ricoh controller.

DeskTopBinder Lite, which comes bundled with the CD containing the scan driver, enables users to view, download and repurpose documents stored on the hard drive. Furthermore, files stored in the Document Server can be sent via e-mail. Up to five LDAP servers can be enabled, with users being able to search by name, fax number, e-mail address, company name and department name as long as this information exists in the mail server. In addition to directly selecting addresses from LDAP servers, addresses can be programmed at the control panel, which features a QWERTY keypad. It takes 18 keystrokes without a user name and password to perform a scanto-e-mail job to one destination using LDAP with a 300-dpi PDF file. Scanning to two destinations increases the number of keystrokes to 19. Users can set up a scan-to-e-mail favorites list. Although the unit does not generate an error when sending to an e-mail address that does not exist, a second job can be sent to an existing address even though the first job is held.
GlobalScan, which enables users to scan documents to a range of document management and other applications, e-mail addresses and network folders, is also available. This optional enterprise scan solution was highly rated by BLI in a Solutions Report and lets users save documents in various formats, including PDF, RTF, TIFF and Excel.
Image Quality Color Print/Copy Quality

VERY GOOD/GOOD

Color output printed by the Aficio 3260C was rated Very Good. Business graphics exhibited bright colors and received above average marks across the board save for only average consistency of coverage. Despite some graininess, photographic image output was also very good overall, with above average sharpness. In copy mode, color output was good overall. Business graphics had average sharpness and production of pastel shades, while background reproduction was below average (light backgrounds in BLIs test original were not visible on the copy). Although flesh tones were natural looking, photographic images were grainy. A range of color adjustments can be accessed via the control panel. Users can adjust color balance, primary and secondary colors and, for copy mode, sharp/soft, contrast and background density. Users also have access to 15 color presets.

Black Print/Copy Quality

Text printed by the unit was rated Very Good, as characters were dark, sharp and fully formed, with no evidence of toner overspray. In copy mode, text was good overall. BLI technicians cited average darkness, sharpness and smoothness of curves/lines/serifs, although characters were not always fully formed, with some breakup evident. Although line art in print mode was rated Good, with consistent line thickness and closely spaced fine lines remaining distinct, circles were not always fully formed. In addition, there was some evidence of stair-stepping of diagonal lines. Line art in copy mode was very good overall, earning above average marks across the board. In print mode, halftone pattern and halftone range were rated Good and Very Good, respectively. Halftones were produced from the 2 percent to 100
percent dot-fill levels, with distinct transitions between levels and average coverage within levels. Halftone pattern and halftone range in copy mode were both fair overall. Halftones were produced from the 29 percent (15 percent is the minimum coverage level on the original) to 100 percent dot-fill levels, with minimal transition between levels and below average coverage within levels. Solids in both modes were rated Good, as BLI technicians cited average darkness and consistency of coverage.
PRODUCTIVITY Color Print/Copy Productivity

GOOD/VERY GOOD

When printing BLIs job stream, which replicates typical office use in a multi-user environment, from the PostScript driver, the Aficio 3260C had a competitive actual running speed when compared to business color models tested to date; its efficiency rate, however, was well below average. Because of the units high-rated engine speed, even though overall simplex and duplex print efficiency rates when printing multiple sets of a mixed black and color document in auto-color mode are well below average for business color models tested, actual tested running speeds are competitive in simplex mode and above average in duplex mode.
Similarly, although copy efficiency rates in all three modes were well below average, the Aficio 3260Cs actual tested running speed when producing multiple sets in 1:1 was competitive and above average in 1:2 and 2:2 modes. The unit not only had among the fastest actual tested running speed when printingfrom the PCL driverand copying booklets, but its efficiency rate was also above average in both modes. The PostScript driver does not support booklet printing. Actual tested running speed in full-color print mode is competitive. The Aficio 3260Cs first-copy time is competitive from both the platen and the document feeder.

Black Print/Copy Productivity
While the unit had a competitive efficiency rate when using the PostScript driver to print BLIs job stream, its actual tested running speed is among the highest for business color models tested to date.
Although the Aficio 3260C had a below average efficiency rate in simplex mode and a competitive efficiency rate in duplex mode when producing multiple sets, its actual tested running speeds in both modes were among the fastest in the group. The unit had competitive efficiency rates and among the fastest actual tested running speeds in 1:1, 1:2 and 2:2 copy modes for business color models tested to date. When printing and copying booklets, the Aficio 3260C had well above average actual tested running speeds for the group and competitive efficiency rates. First-copy times from both the platen and the document feeder are competitive.

EASE OF USE

GOOD The units control panel incorporates a 8-3/4" x 3-1/4" monochrome touchscreen display. Most of the features required for a typical copy job, such as quantity, duplex, paper selection, exposure and sort, are located on the first screen. The angle of the control panel cannot be tilted.
The contrast of the touch-screen display can be adjusted via a dial on the left side of the control panel. The control panel is customizable in that up to five frequently used functions that are not on the main screen can be moved to the main screen.
Ricoh Aficio 3260C Control Panel
There is no Help key, but the Aficio 3260C does have a Sample Copy hard key that enables users to print one set of a job to check it for correct production before releasing the entire job. Moreover, users can review the details of a specific job by pressing the Check Mode key on the touch-screen display. Separate hard keys for Job List (for copy jobs only), Copy, Document Server, Printer and Scanner are located on the control panels left side. Each of these keys has built-in LEDs that illuminate to show which function is currently in operation. Additionally, hard keys for Auto Color Selection, Full Color, Black & White, One Color and Two-Color enable users to easily toggle between the different copy modes available. Upon entry of the authorized password, a secure print job can be released while the unit is copying or printing, but the settings for the job cannot be altered. The User Tools/Counter hard key allows users to customize the unit to their desired settings for the copier, printer, scanner and Document Server. This key also enables users to change copy count display to count up or down and change function priority. The Aficio 3260Cs job queue is only for copy jobs; users can check the job queue for items such as number of originals, number of sets for copy jobs in queue, user name, total sets programmed and job number. Print jobs in queue must be viewed via SmartDeviceMonitor; if users want to delete their job, they must wait until it begins printing in order to delete it. There is no selection for 1:1 copying, which might be confusing if a user needs to make a single-sided copy after completing a double-sided copy job. Programming job build functionality is easy via Batch mode. Users can combine assorted sets of originalseach with different settingsinto one job. It takes five keystrokes to program a copy job consisting of two sets in 2:2 duplex mode with single-position stapling and reduction. Booklet copy creation was difficult as there are no graphical instructions to walk users through the process. However, if booklet mode is programmed as a default button on the control panel, it requires fewer clicks. Although there is no mechanical counter, two electronic meter counters are available from the control panel. With the basic counter, color and black copy and print totals are displayed. The more detailed counter is accessed from the Administrator Tools touch key within System Settings under the Tools/Counter hard key. Users select Display/Print Counter to view the color and black sent scan totals. Both counters can be printed. Users can pull the drawers open without having to press any buttons when loading paper. Furthermore, the length and width guides in the user-adjustable drawers slide to fit the size of paper being loaded.

To adjust paper size, users must first unlock the locking mechanism in the back of the drawer, but it can be left in the open position thereafter. Users then squeeze the button in the front of the drawer to move the guides either in or out. The user-adjustable drawers are equipped with electronic paper sensors that automatically detect the size of paper loaded. The bypass tray recognizes that paper has been loaded but not the size of the paper. Some other devices that BLI has tested also do not detect paper size, but they do display a menu prompting users to select the correct paper size. Two dynamic graphics appear on the touch-screen display when a misfeed occurs. One graphic shows the location of the misfed paper with indicators; as misfeeds are removed, the indicators clear. The second graphic provides text-based information and illustrates the misfeed removal process to users in an easy-to-understand way. Toner replacement is simple and clean thanks to Ricohs new toner bag technology. Users just open the door, pull the drawer that houses each individual toner bag out and drop a new bag in. (The bags compress as toner is depleted and they can simply be thrown away once theyre empty or returned directly to Ricoh to be recycled.)

FEATURE SET

VERY GOOD The Aficio 3260Cs standard and non-upgradeable memory capacity of 1.38 GB is competitive when compared to business color models in this speed range tested to date. In addition, the capacity of its four 80-GB hard drives (320 GB total, shared between the copier and the printer) is tied with several other devices for the highest. The units standard and maximum paper capacities of 3,400 and 7,400 sheets, respectively, is among the highest in the competitive group. The Aficio 3260Cs bypass tray and reversing automatic document feeder (RADF) have a capacity of 100 sheets, which is competitive for business color models in this speed range tested to date. The unit can accommodate 14- to 34-lb. paper from its drawers and 15-lb. bond to 140-lb. index from its bypass tray. Ricoh offers three optional finishers for the Aficio 3260C. The first two can both handle up to 3,000 sheets in their shift trays250 in the proof trayand can staple in up to four positions; the difference is that one can staple up
to 100 sheets while the other can staple up to 50 sheets. The 2,000-sheet saddle-stitch finisher, which also has a 250-sheet proof tray, can staple up to 100 sheets in as many as five positions, as well as produce up to 60-page booklets and V-fold. An optional two-/three-hole-punch unit is available for all three finishers. Ricoh also offers two additional optional finishers for the unit: the GBC StreamPunch III, which can produce spiral-bound books, and the Plockmatica heavy-duty booklet finisher that can produce up to 120-page booklets and be equipped with an optional trimmer.

SECURITY FEATURES

NOT RATED
The Aficio 3260C offers several levels of authentication. Windows authentication is the most secure, as users names and passwords are authenticated against Windows directory service, Active Directory. LDAP authentication verifies users against an LDAP server in a Windows or Novell networked environment and before allowing them to send scanned documents from their personal e-mail accounts to other users directly from the device. User code authentication limits access to functions according to the user code. Basic authentication not only manages the units available functions but also limits access to stored files and to personal data in the address book. SMTP authentication and POP before SMTP are also supported.
When authentication is enabled, users must be logged in to scan to e-mail. The optional DataOverwriteSecurity System conforms to the National Security Agencys method for managing sensitive information and can automatically overwrite copy, print, scan and Document Server jobs up to nine times, which is more than any other security kit evaluated by BLI.

TONER YIELD

EXCELLENT The Aficio 3260Cs tested color toner yield for cyan is well above the average for the competitive group, while its yields for magenta and yellow are both above average. The units yield for black is also well above average; in fact, its the second highest tested to date.
FAIR The Aficio 3260C is priced higher than the average for comparably equipped business color models in this speed range tested to date. Supplies cost per page could not be calculated, as pricing is set by dealers and was not provided by Ricoh.

SUPPORTING TEST DATA

Test Environment
This product was tested in BLIs 10,000-square-foot test lab, in an environment monitored by a Honeywell Temp/RH chart recorder, which replicates typical office conditions.

Test Equipment

BLIs dedicated test network, consisting of Windows NT 4.0, 2000 and Microsoft Exchange servers, Windows 2000 and XP workstations, 10BaseT/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.

Test Duration

Products are tested for two months, one month of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume, with daily volumes divided evenly over the course of the test.

Test Procedures

The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLIs proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, including a BLI-developed variation of ASTMs 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation, color print quality is tested using the ANSI standard IT8 Color Test Target, which is read using the Minolta CM503I Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. In addition, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 428 Densitometer. GeorgiaPacific Spectrum DP 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 10 percent of which is recycled paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content. Image quality is tested using Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (95 brightness, 22-lb. bond).

Black mode: The unit completed the job stream using the PCL driver in 30.60 seconds, running at 37.3 ppm, which translates to an efficiency rate of 62.1%.
BLIs job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the printer as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the unit operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the unit.
